I had a bad radiator leak and failed to maintain water volume and caused the lifters to fail. So I took the engine apart and in the process decided to change out the cam and gears. I lined up the cam 180 degrees off and had to replace both heads. It cost me over $1000 in parts to fix.
Why does that sprocket not have a keyway, spline, or bolts? Is there even a timing mark on there? The only person at fault here is the idiot who designs this ford junk.
Ford ecoboost engines are a pain to work with. As a Ford Focus ST MK3 owner, I can attest to that. You either need special tools specific for this engine to time it up once the tension is removed from the chain or you gotta try and stop anything from moving while you do what you need to do as some of the parts don't have key ways to pin them dead still.
Jigsaw and some 1/2 inch thick board can get you a useable jig though…even if it's bodge it stops things moving.
I hope your apprentice knows how fortunate he is to be trained by you. Not only the technical portion of your profession, but the ethics of doing the right thing even when it hurts. I commend you for portraying scriptural lessons in business.
Why am I not surprised to see yet ANOTHER idiotically engineered Ford engine? There was a time when Fords were absolutely fine. 2000 and older Fords are generally pretty good… Certainly no worse than anything else. Somewhere along the line Ford must have decided to hire the dumbest f'ing engineers on the planet because they have been pure shit for the past 2 decades. They screwed up spark plugs TWICE on the Triton V8 as well as a few other issues with that engine. The 6.0 and 6.4 powerstroke diesels are garbage. The Ford Escapes have cylinder block failure consistently and as early as 10K miles. And now one of their geniuses came up with another one of Ford's better ideas and chose to NOT have a keyway in the crankshaft and timing gear to index the valve timing? This idiocy can be the result of only to things. Either Ford did this on purpose to discourage people from taking their piles of shit anywhere besides the dealership for service, or likening the engineer's mental acuity to a box of rocks is an insult to a box of rocks. Ridiculous B.S. like this is exactly why I'll never own a Ford newer than 2000, and to be honest, there's no reason to own one newer than 1980 at this point because a '66 or '76 Ford truck is MUCH better looking than a '96 Ford anything. I don't see Ford getting any better because there are legions of fools who will buy them no matter how bad Ford makes them, and judging by the past 20 years, there's no floor.

I once R & R'd engine timing gears in a Pontiac V-8 in 1975. The OEM's were made of plastic and wore down but no engine damage occurred. I replaced them with metal ones and the Chilton's reference manual showed the timing marks lining together in the middle. Mission accoumphlished and the Pontiac ran great. About a month later, another Pontiac came in (it was a model year newer than the previous one). It too required R & R of the worn plastic timing gears. Did the same procedure as the first Pontiac except this time the car wouldn't start and only backfired. After thinking about this problem for several hours while scratching most of my body parts, I returned to the Chilton's manual and looked up the procedure for this newer Pontiac V-8. Turned out that Pontiac made a design change and the timing gear marks were to be installed at opposite ends and not together. Who would have thunk! Henceforth, I checked Chilton's whenever I worked on a vehicle I was unfamilar with.
50 yrs ago, when I was apprenticing in my grandfather's garage, I was given the task of a simple sparkplug change. An insulator broke, and the terminal fell down inside the plug hole. Not knowing the catastrophe this would cause, I went about my business. Only when I started the car did I get the scolding of a lifetime. That little piece of metal seized up the engine and my grandfather had to pay out for a rebuild
Hard to believe something as important as that is held on by interference fit. When these engines get old and wear it will slip and as an interference design destruction will result. Built in obsolescence. That should be keyed at a minimum Ray.

Ford and Mazda don't use a keyed crank gear or balancer. Valve spring pressure on the cam can effectively turn the camshafts when the balancer is removed without even touching the crank.
Never buy or own a damned Ffffffffford. Anyone remember how you had to reach across the steering wheel to hold the gear shift lever in park so you could start the car? That took them years to fix. Bought a new 87 T-Bird once, my wife was the bookkeeper at the Ford dealership otherwise she'd would have been driving a chevy to work, after a few years I decided to replaced the belts and hoses. My buddy owned a NAPA store so I went to him for my parts. He said the heater hose was a dealer item only. So i go to the dealer and they tell me the FoMoCo parts system said "improvise". Ford didn't offer a heater hose with two 90* bends two inches apart! The power window motor went out, had to drill a hole in the door where the factory had dimpled the metal to get a socket to a nut on a stud….this was the official Ford procedure. Once i reinstalled the door panel half the hole was exposed. The AC compressor went out for the second time just out of warranty. Ford knew the system was crap and devised an entire new kit, the dealer would sell it to me at cost, $1000, I said hell no. The kit included every thing, brackets, belts, compressor, condenser and dryer….They really made some shitty cars in those days
When you mention a timing cover leak first thing I though was CRANK pully! they don't Key them on a lot of cranks now its insane and they can slip! why the hell they cant put a key in there…

No key way , is floating crank, needs to be all locked up before removal of harmonic balancer
