I have an 05 Scion xA with 272k on it. Same engine, 1NZ-FE. From what I've been told, these engines go through belts quite a lot. And my car has been no exception.
Itโs actually on 07 Yaris and it does have electric power steering. Also one of the best cars Iโve ever owned. Now I have a matrix itโs it great too.
If that was a new belt, and it was tight, then Iโm going to go out on a limb and say there is something else is causing the grooves in the back of the belt, and itโs probably one of the idler pulleys that needs replacing. I know Ray said the pulleys were ok, but letโs see if it comes back for round two.
I got a squeak problem in my car but its the weirdest thing. Only happens when the wife is in the passenger seat with the windows rolled up.. it will randomly squeak then start smelling like burnt rubber and old tacos.. like theres a critter up under the hood that steps on the wrong spot.. my wife never hears it and says she thinks its my tires smelling like that.. and as a matter of fact i put the same tires on her car and hers does it too when i ride with her.. gotta be the cheap chinese rubber making the noises..
If your belt squeals after tightening or replacing and your sure the tension is correct, turn the key to the run position first, count to 3 and then start the car. Theory being that turning the key straight to start causes the ecm to signal the alternator into full charge. This causes the belt to squeal when it's cold. Turning the key to the on position before going to start lets the ecm read the battery charge state and signals the alternator to normal charge or freewheel status. I've suggested this to 2 different yaris owners. Both reported no more squealing belts.
on those cars, power-brake while sitting still with brakes anchored hard and turn the wheels back and forth. that makes extra high steering load current from the increased tire resistance, since the wheels cannot roll the slight amount they normally due to the brakes. just don't do it for a long period and cook something ๐
Hey Ray, like your vids find them very entertaining, sometimes I think shops do sometimes take advantage of people by charging them for things not done. By the way my dad lives in Inverness, how far is that from you, thanks for the great vids, Tom from Hawaii.
South Main did a nice job. Good tech as well. Smart beats algorithm every day. Unfortunatelyl, as time passes, these creep into all fields including Medicine!!! Thank goodness for smart people. Yes, I am an intellectual bigot!!! LOL!!! Kudos!!!
I have the 2ZR engine, just the larger version of this one. I generally install the belt too tight since I don't have any kind of gauge and it squeaks a bit on startup, not as bad as this one though.
this is EXACTLY the squeal noise on my Montero Sport. looks like they never changed the belts when they changed the alternator. bet you anything that's been the problem with it since that last service.
Grooves on the back of the belt means that whatever wheel it's going over with the flat side of the belt has a worn bearing or clutch. While it's cold it doesn't spin fast enough so the belt is dragging over it, squealing, until it warms up and rotates properly. The bearing could also be squealing until it heats up.
Really enjoy your content ,I can't fix a thing however its interesting to see how you can fix almost most things on cars .keep up the Great work ๐๐๐
I worked in IT as a hardware technician for 15 years. I can confirm that "things come in waves". One week it's be laser printers doing one thing, the next week monitors, then disk drives, then…
Another great video Ray…you never disappoint. I've never seen a new belt with those lines on the outside..weirdness. Glad the 2nd new belt fixed it. I checked out the video you mentioned of Erics…wow…you two are amazing and I wish you guys were closer to me:-) Thanks again Ray for the great video:-)
Good a Dayco belt. I've always had the best luck with those. On my old v belt cars, I always used the old Dayco Top Cog belt. Some don't like them but they were always reliable for me.
I used to own a Yaris, the alternator tensioner was the worst! Way too much fine tuning to get the squeal to go away after installing a new belt. I found it would squeal if it was too loose, and if it was too tight.
oh ray, that south main auto guy is blind. I watched a another video putting on mufflers on a camaro and put a pipe on wrong. You gotta watch and advise. rotflmao.. No i will not go there.
I just saw the video of Ray putting that alternator and belt on as well as a new battery before he posted this video. The belt had those marks on it when he installed it new.
Whoever allegedly โsold her a beltโ needs their bum kicked. They either reused the one she had, and charged her for a new one, or put a very cheap eBay belt on it for a 50% markup and it wore prematurely.
My work truck made this noise. It turned out to be a pulley wasn't quite lined up. It started after the power steering pump was replaced. But before the fleet mechanic figured it out, the belt, pulley, tensioner, and AC compressor was replaced…..
Ray, thanks for taking the time to say hello the other day. Being a teacher, I know how you feel when a few people/comments can ruin your day, but trust me, way more people enjoy what you do for them. Thanks again, Matt
Hey Ray, My Father owns a 2007 Yaris and I seem to have to tighten the alternator on a yearly basis but the Dayco belt is holding up fine on it. I suspect it's a common occurrence for belt squeal on that model.
The Toypta Echo and Yaris the alternators need tightened. a cpl times a year. Watch the vvt solenoid. I love those 1.5. Spiffy and good on gas. I drive mine more than anything. Even my Lexus. 2 door hatchback though, not like that one. Great cars.
An excellent example showing it takes more than a code reader and "what others have done", either from the tool or good old Google, to be a good technician/mechanic. There are way too many people in the auto service arena who do not fully understand the systems and how they work, and they tend to be the ones who just change parts and often fix nothing. Those are the people that give the industry a bad reputation. Btw, you will find people who operate the same way in other service fields, like HVAC for instance.
This vintage of Toyota has a cold start belt squeal nearly always. In the morning, turn the key from OFF straight to START (without stopping in between) and the belt will squeal briefly. Now shut it off and then turn the key to ON, wait 2-3 seconds, and then start the engine. No squeal. Then shut it off and try the straight to ON again and you'll get a squeal. Stop in the START position for a couple seconds before cranking and it won't squeal. Explain that one. I've duplicated it on numerous Toyota vehicles (Camry, Corolla, Yaris, Matrix, etc.)
I watched that video I am subscribed to your channel and to his I enjoy watching you both. If both you and him could collaborate together and do a video together I would like to see both of you working on something together that would definitely be great.
Ray,good to put out the ok for Eric ! Super thing a ma jing guy, gets r done +++ Ivan,,, he is smart enough to fly Apollo 13,,,,, just give him 10 minutes ! He Could have been an Astronaught !! Ivโe learned a ton from u guys, still help me out! Still running my garage in Salt Ladden Ontario !
Ray : like Ivโe said,,, 45 years running & still running my garage in Ontario,,, for the โ life of meโ I noticed the same,, brake line replacement for 3 weeks, then radiators , no more brake lines, then water pumps 2-3 months on & on !? Never could figure ?
Great video I watch you and SMA learn something new everyday quick question I haven't dived into it yet 2007 chevy cobalt dash cluster and radio work and then don't,? Any ideas car starts fine no trouble i say irs a bad ground or something. Any help or ideas will be appreciated
A bad idler pulley can cause nasty-squealy-noise as well, so much more fun (and cheaper) to replace the bearing instead of the whole assembly YMMV ๐
Watched Eric's vid yesterday! Ray, Eric and Ivan are my go to US car repair vids I watch every night, im in the UK! LM Auto Repairs in the UK is awesome! All you guys fascinate me at how easy you make it look, love it.
I work for a diesel bus fleet and we also have repairs come in waves. 1 week thereโs about 5 buses down for emissions and the next week would be all trans jobs. I thought it was only our fleet because all the buses share the same threshold on parts but I guess it happens everywhere also ๐
Saw the broken cam shaft on an Audi at VAG, interesting channel, i would never own an AUDI BMW or Merc, all the recent ones have the timing chain setup in the back of the engine. :/
Had a mazda 6. Kept breaking belts. After swapping 2 belts to have them break in about 200 miles, changed alternator and belt. Problem solved. Alternator felt good, but it was the culprit causing the problem. Real pain in the ass to swap out.
Ive only seen a new belt look screwed up like that 1 time before. The mechanic put the belt on wrong . He had the inside of the smooth pulley against the inside of the belt and the grooved pulley against the outside of the belt and the ridges were cutting into the belt.
I had a transmission cooler line squirt transmission fluid all over my front cover and now my newish belt squeaks. Got it down with soapy water, but had to throw baby powder on it to stop it completely. Any tips?

Nice to see another Yaris. They're my favorite cars. Damn near bulletproof… besides squealing belts, that is.

Toyota Yaris is a great car. Easy to work on. Reliable. Great gas mileage!

How about those motor mounts when you rev the engine in park?
seen it before ray

I would watch Eric's video except I clicked on it within 20 minutes of him uploading it lol

In video description.. "Service date.." should be "Service data…"
Thanks Ray, long time watcher, great content.
You see that engine moving while you switch gears jebus
Happy Father's Day Ray man!!!

I just watched one of your videos created a year ago and I must say theyโve improved considerably Ray. Well done young man.
Full speed ahead in a Yaris? Really? 1.5 liters of fury!
Pine Hollow is on another level. That man is a Wizard.. he practices the dark arts of diagnostics for real.
Sweet little car! And those 1.5 are absolutely bulletproof with basic maintenance only.
A 1.5 Liter engine, in Australia it would be a 1.5 Litre engine ๐
You are sly sir! I am the jerk here and you both know what I am talking about. ๐
You are sly sir.
I'm the jerk in this case. ๐

2 things we can count on in our industry, accurate mechanical belt adjustments and Google….Ok, that might not be completely true.
it have been the flux capacitor making the noise too. ๐
The moment you closed the hood I was like โuhhh sensor?!โ
Been there saw that video already, funny how the best out there attract similar minds. Love your videos Ray
So Ray, ya made the roller skate a bit less squeaky !
No plan survives first contact intact.
Yes ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
car needs some new engine mounts imo
excessive movement of the engine
Thanks for the recommendation but I've been following Eric for about 3 years now. He is also a great mechanic

I'm curious why the new belt had the grooves worn into it ? Seems like maybe something was not aligned ? or something rubbing it ?

Agree with others, broken engine or trans mount appeared to be on left (drivers) side.
That is excessive engine movement under brake torque. How much you want to bet the Hydraulic mount is toast?
