I have an 05 Scion xA with 272k on it. Same engine, 1NZ-FE. From what I've been told, these engines go through belts quite a lot. And my car has been no exception.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John LaCroix says:

WOW very interesting super kool ,1st class great info.,, AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ again great video I liked it a lot ,keep up the great work.

Itโ€™s actually on 07 Yaris and it does have electric power steering. Also one of the best cars Iโ€™ve ever owned. Now I have a matrix itโ€™s it great too.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Willem says:

To late, I already watched SMA's video…. LOL

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars aenoymotors says:

Nice to see another Yaris. They're my favorite cars. Damn near bulletproof… besides squealing belts, that is.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Cummings says:

If that was a new belt, and it was tight, then Iโ€™m going to go out on a limb and say there is something else is causing the grooves in the back of the belt, and itโ€™s probably one of the idler pulleys that needs replacing. I know Ray said the pulleys were ok, but letโ€™s see if it comes back for round two.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Z Ack says:

I got a squeak problem in my car but its the weirdest thing. Only happens when the wife is in the passenger seat with the windows rolled up.. it will randomly squeak then start smelling like burnt rubber and old tacos.. like theres a critter up under the hood that steps on the wrong spot.. my wife never hears it and says she thinks its my tires smelling like that.. and as a matter of fact i put the same tires on her car and hers does it too when i ride with her.. gotta be the cheap chinese rubber making the noises..

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheCyberMantis says:

Toyota Yaris is a great car. Easy to work on. Reliable. Great gas mileage!

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Conley says:

If your belt squeals after tightening or replacing and your sure the tension is correct, turn the key to the run position first, count to 3 and then start the car. Theory being that turning the key straight to start causes the ecm to signal the alternator into full charge. This causes the belt to squeal when it's cold. Turning the key to the on position before going to start lets the ecm read the battery charge state and signals the alternator to normal charge or freewheel status. I've suggested this to 2 different yaris owners. Both reported no more squealing belts.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David says:

How about those motor mounts when you rev the engine in park?

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Taylor says:

    seen it before ray

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars throttle bottle says:

on those cars, power-brake while sitting still with brakes anchored hard and turn the wheels back and forth. that makes extra high steering load current from the increased tire resistance, since the wheels cannot roll the slight amount they normally due to the brakes. just don't do it for a long period and cook something ๐Ÿ˜‹

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Nicholsonu says:

We all told you to reconnect the connector! Did you not hear us over workshop noise?

Hey Ray, like your vids find them very entertaining, sometimes I think shops do sometimes take advantage of people by charging them for things not done. By the way my dad lives in Inverness, how far is that from you, thanks for the great vids, Tom from Hawaii.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MikeP47 says:

I have the 2ZR engine, just the larger version of this one. I generally install the belt too tight since I don't have any kind of gauge and it squeaks a bit on startup, not as bad as this one though.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! anonymuswere says:

this is EXACTLY the squeal noise on my Montero Sport. looks like they never changed the belts when they changed the alternator. bet you anything that's been the problem with it since that last service.

SMA & Rain Man – Fun Channels

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Amzar Nacht says:

Grooves on the back of the belt means that whatever wheel it's going over with the flat side of the belt has a worn bearing or clutch. While it's cold it doesn't spin fast enough so the belt is dragging over it, squealing, until it warms up and rotates properly. The bearing could also be squealing until it heats up.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Silverton says:

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeffry Blackmon says:

I watched the SMA video that you referenced. That was a weird camshaft failure. Thanks for this video!

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don W says:

Another great video Ray…you never disappoint. I've never seen a new belt with those lines on the outside..weirdness. Glad the 2nd new belt fixed it. I checked out the video you mentioned of Erics…wow…you two are amazing and I wish you guys were closer to me:-) Thanks again Ray for the great video:-)

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bubba ray says:

Good a Dayco belt. I've always had the best luck with those. On my old v belt cars, I always used the old Dayco Top Cog belt. Some don't like them but they were always reliable for me.

Yesterday a Lexus, today a Toyota. Scotty Kilmer would be pulling his hair out by now.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Colin Page says:

I used to own a Yaris, the alternator tensioner was the worst! Way too much fine tuning to get the squeal to go away after installing a new belt. I found it would squeal if it was too loose, and if it was too tight.

what about that w ably pulley..

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matt Hunt says:

I just saw the video of Ray putting that alternator and belt on as well as a new battery before he posted this video. The belt had those marks on it when he installed it new.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Topher D says:

Whoever allegedly โ€œsold her a beltโ€ needs their bum kicked. They either reused the one she had, and charged her for a new one, or put a very cheap eBay belt on it for a 50% markup and it wore prematurely.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars fredy gump says:

My work truck made this noise. It turned out to be a pulley wasn't quite lined up. It started after the power steering pump was replaced. But before the fleet mechanic figured it out, the belt, pulley, tensioner, and AC compressor was replaced…..

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars G R says:

I just watched one of your videos created a year ago and I must say theyโ€™ve improved considerably Ray. Well done young man.

  63. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sam Driver says:

    Hey Ray,
My Father owns a 2007 Yaris and I seem to have to tighten the alternator on a yearly basis but the Dayco belt is holding up fine on it. I suspect it's a common occurrence for belt squeal on that model.

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Kennedy says:

    ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mark price says:

I'm curious why the new belt had the grooves worn into it ? Seems like maybe something was not aligned ? or something rubbing it ?

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Denver1976Man says:

The Toypta Echo and Yaris the alternators need tightened. a cpl times a year. Watch the vvt solenoid. I love those 1.5. Spiffy and good on gas. I drive mine more than anything. Even my Lexus. 2 door hatchback though, not like that one. Great cars.

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars gcraig0001 says:

An excellent example showing it takes more than a code reader and "what others have done", either from the tool or good old Google, to be a good technician/mechanic. There are way too many people in the auto service arena who do not fully understand the systems and how they work, and they tend to be the ones who just change parts and often fix nothing. Those are the people that give the industry a bad reputation. Btw, you will find people who operate the same way in other service fields, like HVAC for instance.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars johnaclark1 says:

This vintage of Toyota has a cold start belt squeal nearly always. In the morning, turn the key from OFF straight to START (without stopping in between) and the belt will squeal briefly. Now shut it off and then turn the key to ON, wait 2-3 seconds, and then start the engine. No squeal. Then shut it off and try the straight to ON again and you'll get a squeal. Stop in the START position for a couple seconds before cranking and it won't squeal. Explain that one. I've duplicated it on numerous Toyota vehicles (Camry, Corolla, Yaris, Matrix, etc.)

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph Platter says:

An honest as hell mechanic. Bravo sir.

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Donald Halls says:

Great video I watch you and SMA learn something new everyday quick question I haven't dived into it yet 2007 chevy cobalt dash cluster and radio work and then don't,? Any ideas car starts fine no trouble i say irs a bad ground or something. Any help or ideas will be appreciated

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SpectreOz says:

A bad idler pulley can cause nasty-squealy-noise as well, so much more fun (and cheaper) to replace the bearing instead of the whole assembly YMMV ๐Ÿ‘

  82. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tony Rice says:

I work for a diesel bus fleet and we also have repairs come in waves. 1 week thereโ€™s about 5 buses down for emissions and the next week would be all trans jobs. I thought it was only our fleet because all the buses share the same threshold on parts but I guess it happens everywhere also ๐Ÿ˜‚

I have a question is the speed monitor in the middle of the dashboard for back seat drivers?

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Tucker says:

Had a mazda 6. Kept breaking belts. After swapping 2 belts to have them break in about 200 miles, changed alternator and belt. Problem solved. Alternator felt good, but it was the culprit causing the problem. Real pain in the ass to swap out.

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kenny Man says:

I watched that episode from south main auto a few days ago.

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Peterson says:

Ive only seen a new belt look screwed up like that 1 time before. The mechanic put the belt on wrong . He had the inside of the smooth pulley against the inside of the belt and the grooved pulley against the outside of the belt and the ridges were cutting into the belt.

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars E-Nonymouse says:

Engine is moving around enough the engine mounts may be suspect.

    Any tips?

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bowhunters says:

Agree with others, broken engine or trans mount appeared to be on left (drivers) side.

  97. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jimmy S says:

That is excessive engine movement under brake torque. How much you want to bet the Hydraulic mount is toast?

  98. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars South Main Auto Repair LLC says:
