Everyone knows that if you spray brake cleaner on a long lost car peanut, it brings it right back to that "just picked" state.
Was just about to doze off and that fucking train horn hit. Not time-stamping it, I want somebody else to suffer as I did.
Hammer and chisel away worked for me. 👍
The clamp was in the factory installation position
Only you can have hoses installing themselves in the wrong place. Lol
We did this yesterday with a grand looser (land cruiser ) for the same reason. Way to check fuel pump 1 check electrical 2 check fuel level by putting a gallon / 5 litres in it then remove tank and we had to disconnect the drive shaft ( it had the grease nipple in the shaft joint.
Another great job done by You Tubes best Mechanic!! 👍🏼💯🧠🥳
That horn blast scared the crap outa me too haha.
Good Job, Ray! That was interesting and enjoyable to watch. I like how you leave everything in! Thank you!
You still fail at keeping fuel parts clean, i gotta say. Pressure blast the sand right into the fuel lines from the tank. Nice.
You really do make this kind of work so much fun, and yeah…..entertaining; all while actually showing us some knowledge….WHAT😱
If only mot teacher in school were like this, school would actually be fun, and not boring that wanna just fall asleep, lol.
✌🏻
When you was putting the gas tank back on I've never laughed as hard as I did when you was trying to get the hose in the other hose look like that gas tank was a b** to get on but you did a great job!!
Amazon has the tool
I really like the single cab trucks it’s a cool look , needs a bit of love and that truck would be sweet 👍
Diesel is hard to explode and doesn't have many fumes unless heated
Wow, what a pain to do!!
Those GM pump housing swell over time and then want to get stuck coming out.
Im laughing about the air chisel….. I was saying…. here it comes, here it comes…. ray is gonna use an air chisel….. here it comes…. bwahahahahahahahaha…….. I love it…. I wish I could like this video twice or even three times…. BTW…. I hate doing fuel tanks…. they are miserable….
I have used a big screwdriver myself. Using an air chisel would scare me not that it could spark a fire, but I could cut a hole in the top of the tank which would really suck. Now if I have to do something like this, I would use a brass punch instead because that won't make sparks when hit with a hammer. But I hate dropping fuel tank they are so big and dirty, though easy enough util you have to remove and replace all the connection….Good job.
its easier to plug in those 2 connectors to pump ehen tank is raised halfway up then plug it in then done all the way up
That bolt happened about the same time my phone hit my face, good timing, you actually hit me with the bolt, lmfao, love your videos man, you, rich, and SMA are by far my favorite auto repair channels
"It's bolted onto the…. HOOOOONNNNNKKKK…". Thought you were bleeping yourself out for a second Mr. Rainman… kinda surprised me too.
Get ready Ray the couch engineers are out there to tell you not to use the chisel to remove the ring, plus, who knows how many more things they find wrong with you. I would like to see them doing jobs day in and day out without making mistakes. Keep up what your doing, it's YOUR SHOW. Cheers
Don't feel bad Ray. I've done fuel pumps like that for years. It was the way I was taught to do it
You could, of course, to get around any fears of sparking, use an aluminium or brass drift instead of the chisel……
Scared you? I was laying in bed half a sleep. Now I have to change my sheets now. 😆
WITH A NET WORTH OF 4.23 MILLION DOLLARS RAY YOU SHOULD HAVE FIXED THE CAR NOT WITH THE BELT UPSIDE DOWN
I enjoy this show. I like to restore vintage Hondas and when I was able, work on my own cars/trucks. This is fun for me to watch and I wish I could still do it. Not anything close to your learning curve, but small stuff (before Google) I could do. Thanks buddy
You should be wearing some safety glasses when working under a crusty vehicle, just sayin.
Not to nitpick, but if one inspects the position of the power switch of the first jumper box, one may notice it was in the 0 position and not the | position…
As for gasoline….
I've worked on Fuel Dispensers (gas stations) for 30+ years. We hardly ever worry about sparks from a whickity whack device. BUT….
When the boss or OSHA is hanging around, we have BRASS tools. Brass or aluminum pipe wrenches…. Brass impact hammers, and brass chisels. very cool tools, non-sparking metals. … Like being in the bronze age. THAT will keep the REEEEEEEEEE OMG it's gonna blow up!!!! guys off your back. Get a brass hammer and impact transfer tool if it makes you feel better about sparks. It is a way cool tool to have and people will stop griping.
Fun fact, a cigarette is not hot enough to spark a fire unless it hits the ground and sparks…. for fun we old timers used to get the young techs and be smoking around a bucket of gas (for some reason 80% of fuel techs smoke.) and when they say, won't those cigarettes blow us up with all this gas around?, we would go… lets find out, and flick a lit butt into the bucket…..SSSSSSSSSSSSSS… out it goes.
Gas does not burn, only gas vapors burn. They must be mixed between 13 and 14% vapor to air to burn, at stoichiometric proportions. Any more vapor, no fire, any more air, no fire. just like inside an engine. Not only that, a cigarette burns at a lower temperature than the flash point of gas vapor.
With that being said, an empty tank is MUCH more dangerous than a full one. The more vapor in that confined space – the more dangerous it is. a FULL tank is not very dangerous at all except for spillage and the spill catching fire, because the liquid does not burn. Luckily – when a fuel pump goes out, people's first instinct is "its out of gas" and fill er up thinking the gauge failed. This is why 90% of the time when you have to change the fuel pump, the tank is full.
Lmao love the surprise 😂😂😂
He's in the zone…
Like the buthead voice if you no that I mean
I'm not a mechanic.. is easier to pay someone, but I was wondering why you didn't drain the fuel out of the tank when you had the pump out? Wouldn't it be easier to put the tank back into place if it was lighter and then add the fuel back in when your done?
Video reminds me of why I always just loosen the bed bolts, unplug the harness, and tip the bed. So much easier
I think that I will not do my tank. Leave it to the pro. !!!
Why do American cars have 29 cilinder 125 liter engines that produce 50 horse power while here in Europe we have 3 cilinder 1 liter engines that produce 125 horse power????
I always did truck fuel pumps by taking the bed off. Easier to deal with. Milk crate and holds the bed up then you're on top of the tank.
Every night my wife and I settle down for the night and turn on Rays latest video. We love it. Thanks Ray!
Please use a head mounted gopro. One handed operations are aggrivating to watch👎
My money is on Juan trolling with that blue fuel line becoming mysteriously connected 😉 Love the videos and a big G'DAY from Australia. 🙂
Was it just me or did it look like there was 2 holes drilled in the side of the gas tank
no fuel filter replacement?
I know everyone certainly has their own way they’re comfortable doing things, and who am I to tell another tech what to do, but as a professional tech you really shouldn’t be using meters to run circuit tests, especially when you’re pulling up 7.5 volt readings, you really need a load bearing test light
Usually the only time a chevy fuel pump goes,is after you fill the tank!
Needs the duct tape repair on the front seat plus headlight restoration
Love your work, but just 2 comments. Judging by the blueing on that chisel, it looks like its been on a grinder, that's a no no, you should sharpen a chisel with a file. When you blew the top of the tank for the second time, all the lines with open ends were facing you. hope no dirt was blown into them.
As soon as you said you weren't going to use the hammer and chisel to REMOVE the ring, I said to myself "this guy is going to piss them off and use his pneumatic chisel. " and sure as shit…
Good work sir! Sarasota only being a 1 hour 45 minute drive for me it might be worth bringing my vehicle up there. I had to replace the fuel pump for my 2009 Toyota Rav4 and I had a hard time with it due to a lift and the right tools
The air chisel is much safer than a hand chisel since the compressed air will blow the flame out should the gasoline ignite. Maybe sort of.
I come for the jokes and accents haha
fyi the hood is not taller on the HD's they just updated the front end in 2005 and put a taller hood and split grille
that's a nice blue honda shadow bike in the background
Chisel comedy. Just like clickage and gravity,
Thats one horny high pressure line.
And doing that all by feel??? Well, your wife has trained you well… OK coming clean. working on cars made pleasing the ladies second nature. I had rebuild an MGB and Volvo engines before I ever had to mess with the female of the species.
Ray i wish you were by me!
I thought the MI on the digital odometer meant Michigan…… Learning new stuff everyday!!!! lol
Curiosity, but why didn’t you drain the tank with suction or something before removing it, and then refill it when you installed the tank and had everything reconnected?
The whole time the tank was coming down, I was holding my breath. Thought for sure it was going to fall off the support.
non rusted out tank straps unheard of . was a mechanic up north for 7 years.
When putting the tank shield bolts in, we get to see the highest quality safety squints in existence. 🤣
I know what’s wrong with it, it’s out a gas
Some things were a lot easier in the old days. Fuel pump replacement open the hood, clamp the fuel line going back to the tank, disconnect the fuel line going to the carburetor, remove two bolts, then pull out the old pump. Then reverse the procedure to install the new pump. I've done it in 10 min.
For spark fears use brass punch and no sparky sparky, nice work
So many comments:
Great video. One of your best. Love the “make in clean spray bomb” taunting of your haters. The opening one with the gaggle of them made me Laugh out loud.
Having dropped my C2500 Burb tank for a pump replacement in a parking lot, I’ve decided draining the gas first is wise. Remember filling up every car by mine one time. 😂
On the ring, a large brass punch is what I used for the hold down ring. A useful add to your tools, or not.
Lastly, I’d like to poke the engineers eyes out that overlooked the addition of an access cover in a bed to make this job reasonable.
Ugh yur chubrole haz jaundice eyes. Must be an alcoholic. No wonder. I know what’s wrong with it it ain’t got no gas in it 🤣
A nerf football and some duct tape will fix that driver seat perfectly
Had a fuel pump die on work truck at almost the exact same miles. Same engine, different year.
Ray, love the videos! Just one thing, don’t burn Brake Clean. It produces toxic gas. Use carb clean. Keep safe and keep the videos coming.
Ray, I liked this video so I tappy tapped the like button.(as always) I appreciate all you do for the goodness of mankind!
I see you stick your finger in that inlet hose…..😆
Why not lift the bed of the truck instead of dropping the tank? That's how I did them in my Chevy tech days, when it was possible.
Seriously Ray, you either have three hands or you have a leprechaun assistant.
maybe its a magnum brand???
Seriously I don’t have an ounce of mechanical ability, but I absolutely love your videos! I wish I had your skill set.
The proper tool is a brass pin punch. The air chisel can also spark. A hardwood stick can also work. Two ratchet straps can be used to lower and raise the tank further than the tran… Transmission jack. Oops. I said tra..y. Will YouTube censor my comment?
That's probably why the pump failed in the first place. People constantly running it on no gas will do that. What people don't realize is the gas also cools the pump. Never go below a half tank if you can help it. You're gonna need the gas anyways so what's the difference except a $600 fuel pump replacement.
I still do not know why there is not a cut out on the bed to get to the pump…as far as bolts sticking up in the bed, you could use counter sunk screws to make it a little smoother.
Amazing you was able to unplug and re-plug those wire connectors on top of tank while tank was in place but your tank and fuel pump removal leave much to be desired!!!!!!!!!!
You being a smart ass is why I watch your videos.
I know some people will complain about hitting the gas tank with a hammer, but that method has worked for Jeremy Clarkson… probably too many times.
sometimes Ill just take out the box bolts on one side and loosen the other side and tilt the box up , all depending how rusty and crusty the unit is.
Great job Ray. I still think that the parents of the mechanical engineers really wasted their money on their son or daughter’s education. Either that or Timothy Leary was their instructor. Have a great weekend. PEACE
I love that you make brake clean the star of the video 🤣🤣🤣
Please use BRASS drift pins or chisel, better than being severely burned and scared, especially with any flammable fuel.
get a brass chesil
Just waiting for the owner of the pickup truck to see this video and figure out how his gas tank got a nice dent.
Good show-n-tell on basic troubleshooting. Thumbs up!!!!
The thing is Ray if you did sponsor tools etc.. We would know your honesty would hold fast.
I hope you compensated Juan for his injury.
my headphones ears lol
I'm sure someone has made this comment, but removing the bed is way easier than dropping the tank. It also eliminates the risk of spilling fuel.
Yeah I remember you on a previous job eatin that open box of cheezits in that old guys car…
I have a question for you.
I have a 1990 Ford F-150 with the dual fuel tanks in which the front fuel tank doesn’t pump fuel and the engine will shut down if you switch from the rear fuel tank to the front fuel tank while the engine is running. There’s no fuel pump whine with the front fuel pump whatsoever when the ignition key is turned on as is the case with the rear fuel pump which has the distinctive whining sound when the key switch is turned on.
My question about my front fuel pump is; Does Ford use the exact same style fuel pump as the GM style fuel pump that was replaced in the video.
I do know that with my 1990 4.9 engine that the fuel pump pressure has to be around 60 psi to work properly. So would my fuel pump replacement be similar to the fuel pump replaced in your video. From my memory, I think that with the dual tanks that were on the Ford trucks that there was a fuel pump in each fuel tank as well as the step up fuel pump located on the frame rail.
