In this video I have a look at a customers GMC Envoy XL with the big 4.2 that came in with a complaint of, "MIL on and hard to start after it is warmed up."
A quick test drive leads us right to the answer. It's looking like a fuel delivery issue but we need to drop the tank and run a few more checks.
-Enjoy!

If you live in new york your gonna have a mouse nest in your motor lol. I lived in niagara falls for 15yrs and olean for 2 years and once a month i was clearing out a mouse nest and in the winter its 2 or 3 nests lol. Little bastards reak havoc on your wires lol.
just finished a 03 3/4 ton gm 6.0 with a partial plugged fuel filter fuel pressure test was ok (60) ,fuel trims long trim -3 and was getting 6.5mpg. low power and lack of performance. Replaced partial plugged fuel filter and power came back ,mpg back to 11 Took me awhile to think it through
Good jobs
Customers that are willing to buy oem parts and Open to just fix it are the best customers to have they let you be the tech and explain in order to find the problem I will have to potentially tear this apart do it is what they say are the best customers the want you to diagnose and fix there problem not question you every 5 seconds and it's nice good Video Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
What happened to……Josh?
if the customer is too broke or cheap to fix the wheel bearings, he likely didnt hire a professional shop to try and fix his fuel sending unit,.,. he may have been monkeying with it himself, or hired some ass clown to do it for a case of beer.. when u have to drag information out, and they have no reciepts from the "other" shop, no interest in getting warranty on parts supposedly already installed. or for labor charged that was misdiagnosed. , they are likely blowing smoke up your arse..
โDonโt be weirdโโฆ.and that folks is why guys need to get married!
e 85 vehicle ? If aomeone had that plenum bx off …theres a breather hose on the underside ….that doesnt get reattached
I'll be waiting for Part 2 Of the Perils of Pralines
theres probably a pinhole in the rubber tubing that goes from the fuel pump to the assembly inside the tank.. also the rubber hose in there can swell and come partially loose. OR maybe they put the wrong fuel pump in . I know the older chevys run around 9 to 12 psi. maybe you can try dead heading the fuel pump and see if the pressure will build.
trying to get the truth out of people is like pulling teeth.,,. sometimes your better off just staying focused on your troubleshooting procedure and just follow it to the culprit.
Hey Eric. How you like that thinkdiag scantool? I have the thinkdiag fully bidirectional dongle style scanner they sell and use it everyday at work. Amazed at what It can do for the price point. Thought about investing in one of their units like your using here. Just wondering your thoughts of it
Hey Eric, don't be weird. ๐
It wouldn't be a video of it didn't have a mouse nest๐
You're using a ThinkTool. That's pretty cool. Why the new scantool?
So Mrs O is thinking perhaps she will walk out and you and the new guy will be naked, looking into an engine bay discussing fuel pressure. It's okay, lots of women married to mechanics have crazy thoughts like that, according to Modern Mechanic trade journal.
Chevy Thunder!
ok one question what scanner were you using today and why? ok two questions? lol
For us dummies, whatโs OEM data again?
Those things are slow, but I'm counting roughly 14 seconds from a near stop to 60ish with your foot glued to the floor. Shouldn't be THAT slow. But hey… at least it's getting better fuel economy.
Now that is covering you're bases.
Looks like we got ourselves an Envoy.
Don't be normal!
Did you say โmeeer?โ Boy? ๐น๐น
Does the wife have a Massachusetts plate on the wall?
Does Napa pay you to have that big sign on your building? Not a sponsor
That's the way it always happens. Fuel pump goes out with a full tank. Did it twice with my own truck. Wasn't fun on the ground with a floor jack.
Wow I can hear those wheel bearings on your test drive. Man those are bad!
Phil needs to introduce himself in his boxers and clear the field for some quality videos.
Stay weird, Eric, stay weird.
Mrs. O's deadpan delivery on the locker room was perfect!๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
I don't think I ever had a dead fuel pump show up that didn't have a full tank of gas on it.
GMC = Gotta Mechanic Coming
Hiya Eric
I love it when you taking a vehicle for a test ride. I enjoy the scenery in and around your beautiful little town.
i wonder if while the fuel level sensor was being fiddled with if they broke the plastic on the pump or cracked the lines?
I use Lucas fuel clean… haven't had fuel problems for 10 years. A little in every fill up motorcycle & car.
How do you guys like that Thinktool scanner?
Awesome Eric O. Appreciate the videos buddy ๐
Shoot it with an Atlas
I'm going to buying a new/newer diagnostic unit, and I'd like to know which model of Snap-on you are using here, please.
Shouldn't the Fuel Pump be putting out 50-60 psi ?
Funny I use cake pans in my shop too.
Iโd love to see the video on the pump replacement. Iโve got one of those and would love to see how you do it.
Never fails; need a fuel pump; fuel tank is full
Donโt forget the wheel bearingโs
Love your channel! Love
The way you troubleshoot and
Simplify electrical issues!
Could the fuel injectorโs
Be suspect? Please keep
The great videos coming.
โTemperatures are just right outside ๐โ, โimmediately starts revving engineโ
Thatโs my guy right there
Why is it anytime it's a fuel pump problem. They just filled the tank up.
Again a very good video
I need closure!
Seeing the boss lady in your videos ads the icing on the cake of a sweet video already I just sit in amazement at all your tools….. Thanks for another great video Mr o
I want to see the follow upโฆ I need closureโฆ thanks Eric I always learn something from your videosโฆ..
You don't need to run further tests, "It's filled to the tippy top" means absolutely the pump is bad. They NEVER fail when the tank is conveniently almost empty.
what's up with NY cars and their complimentary mice nest per car and bad wheel bearings on every car
It's weird how much I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Ha ha ha …new guy thinks you are talking to yourself…oh and by the way we are watching too…ha ha ha thanks Eric & Mrs. O that was fun!
Iโm surprised that engines running with 20psi
Plugged converter my guess. Best keep an Eye on those or you will need to change your exhaust manifold. Also can cause issues with A/C, until new cat was put on.
Maybe the rubber hose that the motor connects to the lid leaking in the tank bleeding pressure?
great video Eric…if i was Phil i would be honored to be a part of the SMA team. Never let your life's path be sidetracked by a stone in the road …you're doing what you were meant to do. And you do it so well …like i said i am sure Phil is honored to be in a shop that stands tall on the Web .
Those brownies will taste like gas now.
I'm tired of seeing scan tools I want to see more mechanical work
Thank you Misses O. That was good
Smart move Mr. O on rolling down the window.. I used to valet cars on a ski resort and got myself locked out twice on one of those, good thing the resort had AAA
I don't quite understand fuel trims, so every time you make a video with fuel trim data I'm particularly interested……….also, what did you hear/feel to instantly know that the wheel bearings were bad?……Thanks for another great video.
That first full throttle snap sounded very interesting. Never heard a 4.2 L6 sound quite like that. Nevermind the sawmill wheel bearing. Lol
Beautiful looking PRNY cornfields!
Damn….. You beat out Rainman today. Ray is MIA. This customer has obviously gone full Amazon Chineesium on this fuel pump, and has finally brought it to somebody who knows what they're doing. Greetings from Lake City ๐๐ด๐บ๐ธ
Eric,
Great video and diagnosis/explanation – thank you! You are amazing. I'll say it again: if you had worked for NASA in 1970 Jim Lovell would have been the fifth man to walk on the moon…and be a totally obscure figure today. ๐
SMA#1
Paul (in MA)
That's what I was suspecting is the fuel pump based on the way it started/long crank and you indicated the o2 still read lean under full throttle, also you tested thru your scan tool the fuel tank psi, I've done wheel bearings on these GMC envoy 4.2 and Trailbalzers and even though it's a straight 4ward job those hub bearings are in their tight, tighter than most others I've found, Nice Video!
Fix for the wheel bearingsโฆ. Just turn the radio volume knob to the right, many turns to the right ๐ณ
Good stuff.
Man! Beautiful part of the country you live and work! AND A DOLLAR GENERAL?!? Far out!
Thanks Great video! You can look at the amperage spike when the pump turns on to give you an idea if the power and ground is good. If it spikes to around 20 amps you know it can carry a decent load.
Answer: It was the Tooth Fairy Mechanic that came in the middle of the night, without the owner permission.
for a vehicle that age, its about time for a new pump……..they usually dont last much longer.
What scanner is that?
I thought Mrs O had come to retrieve her baking tray.
Lol can hear the bearings on cameraโฆ..I live when the customer says โI donโt hear the noise you are talking aboutโ or my personal favorite of all time โI donโt pay attention to anything while Iโm drivingโ ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฏ๐คฏ๐ค๐ค
Wouldn't your scan tool show you the fuel pressure without having to attach the fuel pressure gage?
Another top tip segment on how codes are never straight forward .. love this channel . Australia
I had an envoy that after idling for a few minutes, it would shut off like you turned the key off, almost like it was on a idle timer. It would start right back up and always ran great otherwise. BTW, there is a fuel pressure port underneath by the filter.
Vehicle needs a detail.
Thankfully wheel bearings are easy to replace on these. Literally 15 minutes each side
Couldn't you run wires directly to the fuel pump as a check?
Phil Phil whoโs Phil ?
Punxatomi Phil ?
– ๐ ๐ ๐ง – ๐ โค๐ค๐
I always look forward to the cameo appearances by Mrs. O.
I had a similar situation on my 1998 chevy pickupโฆthe ground strap from starter to frame was rotted ..big time power drop to the fuel pump and tail lightsโฆ
God damn, the door chime is loud as fuck. GM must hate it's customers.
Everything I got right here! I've got a 2002 trailblazer with 330,000 on it. These engines are beasts. No oil burning or leaks. Still getting 18 mpg. Change oil every 5,000 and use Lucas fuel treatment consistently. Live in rust belt and frame cracked from rust. I'm gonna weld it up and keep driving.
No worries. Weird is the new normal. ๐ค
Mrs โOโโฆโฆ โDonโt be weird!โ Great advise to receive from your wife. ๐ lol
Boy, was she pissed you stole her cake pan…again! ๐
Man! those wheel bearings are so bad I thought you had it in low gear for a second there!
Whenever you have to drop a tank, it's always full! SMH
Thanks for teaching me 2 things in this video! About the o2 sensor should peg to about 1000mv during wot and that being that it went to 0 it was a fuel delivery problem. And the other thing was about an amp per 10psi for the fuel pump. You are one of the reasons why i continute to learn in this career. I may be 100% trained by GM but i still have a lot to learn!
Mrs O wants her pan back.
I used to do a lot of fuel pumps with full tanks. I used to use a lift and a transmission jack under the tank. Funny thing is the companies I worked for never ever had any of us pull a transmission, but those had really expensive ($1,400 to $2,000) high transmission jacks for use with vehicle lifts. The only full tanks that were hard were the 40 gal strange conformal designed tanks, which were really long for pick-up trucks or cargo vans.
