  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars someusername121 says:

You could have possibly gone rooting around for the connector past the clock spring and measure the resistance from there to the airbag end.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Patrick Reynolds says:

Ray, I have done repairs where intermittent issues I question my repair for months after. It's called moral compass and concern for your craftsmanship. Well done sir.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Maxx Michael says:

go and get replacement leads from fluke…. it's worth getting OEM parts from them

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Maxx Michael says:

do not work on it live… unplug battery and let sit for an hour… or … u will set off air bag

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Maxx Michael says:

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Fallert says:

When I'm returning screws back into plastic, I try to find the original threads the screw cut into the plastic. the screw goes in easier and doesn't cut new threads, weakening the hole. To find the old threads, insert the screw, and lightly turn the screw counter clockwise until you feel a click. You have found the old threads.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Forestiere says:

How did you know it was the steering wheel sensor? When mine came on it was the plug under the passenger seat how many sensors are there ? especially with the newer cars that have several different bags that deploy

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Philip Ershler says:

OMG! A repair executed by Ray without any brake cleaner. Is the car destined to fall apart?

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Clark Magnuson says:

Ray could MC a bar mitzvah

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars johnaclark1 says:

Wow. I don't lose sleep over leaving the battery hooked up when removing an airbag but I was taught never ever to use a meter to check resistance of an airbag. You're applying electricity to them with the meter. I'm sure it's not the right voltage to set them off but you don't know what it's going to do, especially if the resistance of out of spec. That was scary just watching.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lloyd Stone says:

Hey Ray! Love your videos! I've actually learned quite a bit from them. I'm actually currently enrolled in school to become a mechanic. Any advice for a newbie?

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Griffin says:

I read your title as WHEEELLL… OF…. FAILURE…. then I noticed it was off

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Anthony Lovato says:

So, aren't you supposed to disconnect the battery and wait 1/2 an hour before disconnecting the air bag? Also, was the scanner the reason why you were unable to see the data or was it just not available from Hyundai?

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Holt says:

I think it could be the sensor behind a bumper

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brad Martin says:

Wow, another Santa Fe with another bad clock spring, just like 6 months ago.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars nitrous07me says:

I think you got it ray 👍

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Hebert says:

Was anyone else getting nervous when Ray pointed the airbag at his crotch and started fiddling with the wires on the back? I wouldn't want that thing pointed at me at close range.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Felix Hernandez says:

Hey Ray what’s that connector pick called or model?

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Hedrick says:

I set an old air bag off in grill. Needless to say it blew the grill completely apart

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars South Main Auto Repair LLC says:

On your meter touch the leads together (and hold them together) then push the "relative delta" button and that will zero it out. It stores existing reading (a delta) and resets display to zero. Sets a relative reference point to measure against the next reading. It is the "REL Δ" button 👍🏼

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Adriano Di Piero says:

Nice work! But why didn't you remove the airbag fuse when taking it off?

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob Rexford says:

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matthew Lydon says:

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eldon Howard says:

    👍

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Smith says:

I was kinda nervous as you wiggled the airbag connectors… hoping to heck the bag inflator didn't detonate!

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars huzudra says:

Recall 11V472000: Air Bag Clockspring Replacement – 205,233
vehicles affected. This is probably one of them, the customer should
have been sent to the dealer but hopefully can submit for reimbursement.
You really need to start checking bulletins and recalls before quoting
    jobs.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ryan S says:

    Airbags who needs them lol

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars wheelmonkey00 says:

you should totally pull apart that ribbon cable module on the steering wheel

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Wyatt Rich says:

The cable going into the leads probably got bent too far, or too many times. That is one of the most common failure for those sort of probes. At least they're cheap to replace.

  51. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Milosz says:

I've become obsessed with looking at the steering wheel grip surfaces. Many down there are quite funky; but this Hyundai has a very nice cover on the wheel. I feel I have found my calling: STEERING WHEEL CRITIC

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Job38 Four says:

Can you stop the door open noise, very detracting during this critical steering wheel operation….

  53. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Hengeveld says:

Can always tell a great mechanic by the scars on his hands…and Ray has many as myself. (Too many "shop towel" bandages…it really is a "Hard knock life"… lol

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Quebec Dude says:

U looks to be a real good mecano. Don't give up.

  55. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dusty SidePanel says:

idc how safe one person or a million people say it is or not to disconnect an airbag with the battery still connected. im pulling the battery out of the loop everytime. it takes 2 seconds. i popped a pre tensioner once in my early days. never again

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mbc1994 says:

Ray probably knows what he is doing, but I will never dare to use sharp metal objects on airbag connections without disconnecting the battery. In my simple mind its almost like poking a IED wearing only wearing safety squint.

  57. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bernd M says:

Very interesting video. I'd never seen the inside of a modern airbag steering wheel. I was surprised you didn't check out the new part before reattaching the steering wheel covers.

  58. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Kirk says:

Hit the airbag with the Power Probe, like a real Meknik.. LOL

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Doug Williams says:

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars wire 360 says:

    That ground wire 😆

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ammanzi1 says:

Do you ever receive complaints from customers viewing their cars being repaired. Running their a/c at idle for extended amount of time I sure wouldn’t be happy.

  62. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Craig says:

Lots of miles from me to your shop Ray, I just had a bad experience with our '07 Vibe, half axle replaced, and I had to argue with the shop tech that the TransAxle seal Must be replaced!!! it was loosing 2 qts ATF every day, and he did not want to replace that seal? what an idiot. have you thought about moving to OkieLand?

  63. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin CinnamonToast says:

Pretty smart, putting the black tape over the warning light.

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Moefuggerr says:

My meter leads do that also when they get old. Leads replacement time soon.
You did not fire off the airbag to make sure it works. I had to say that.

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Roberts says:

Hi, Your fluke meter just needs to be recalibrated. Videos on line on how to do it, the 2 holes on top of the airbag connectors are for measuring the resistance. You have to turn the wheel back and forth to get proper resistance levels. The clock spring is like a TPS on most vehicles, it just wears in a few spots. Like most electronic parts, they are made cheap and cheap means they don't last. I do mark everything with a sharpie pen for realignment on parts, I'm do not like doing things twice. (Sex sure)
Thank You for keeping me updated on all that you do.

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Archer says:

Great video Ray defiantly learned something today

Oh by the way, Ray. you're NEVER wrong, you're only temporarily mistaken.

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars theeddorian says:

I used to have a '69 Mustang. The guy I bought it from had replaced the stock steering wheel with a "custom" one. On the way home, the steering wheel came off in my hands – on an interstate at about 70 mph. After a moment of screaming (metaphorically) panic, I succeeded in replacing the wheel on the splines, and pushing hard all the way home, kept were it belonged until I got home. Disassembling the parts, it turned out the previous owner had forgotten to put the retaining nut and washer back on. He was quite apologetic and brought them to me immediately after I screamed at him on the phone. Later I replaced that wheel with an original stock wheel and I was very careful to be sure the nut and washer were in place.

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dave Stern says:

What do you mean the part at the end is boring? Not to me! Thanks for your daily videos!

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ray O'Dell says:

What you have to do with intermittent faults is to clear the fault temporarily, put everything back together and as you clear your tools away say very loudly " THAT'S CURED THE FAULT, IT WON'T DO THAT AGAIN " then it will occur only this time you'll see what caused the fault to happened !!!!!

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Willem says:

Again a nice video Ray.. Just a nice DIY manual… I never worked with airbag in my mechanic time.. I am almost 70 years, and never to old to learn.. Thank you again and till the next video, grtz, Willem from the Netherlands..

  73. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kent Diego says:

I knew it was the clockspring before starting video. Had same thing with my Hyundai. The Foxwell SRS scanner provided realtime display of all resistances. When I turned wheel back and forth the resistance would shoot up.

  74. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Samuel Williams says:

    Love the troubleshooting.

  75. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alex Guolo says:

the meter needs to be calibrated thats all

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Proud Canadian says:

Laughing….."It's intermittent week for me. Can't I just do a brake job?" I'm still laughing. That's what happens when you're real good at your job, they give you the hard ones.

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mary Mulrooney says:

What are the burned areas in the metal circle around the column when everything was removed?

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Yves Crepeau says:

  83. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Kelly says:

Like working on an unexplored bomb.

  84. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don Bavol says:

Speaking of steering problems, did you see that Ford recalled for the loose bolt of death?

Two Ford models, the 2022 F-53 Motorhome Stripped Chassis and F-59 Commercial Stripped Chassis have issues with the steering wheel attachment bolt. The steering wheel attachment bolt may loosen and separate from the steering column, resulting in a loose or detached steering wheel.

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim Whit says:

Blame it on the connectiour 🤣🤣

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars WGwireless says:

It would be interesting if you sometimes (like this time) do an autopsy on the defective part, if the customers don't get them. Maybe an idea for a second channel, not to break the structure of this channel. If you have the knowledge to do it or try it, anyway. Maybe bring the bad unit home and set up an bigclive type of over head camera. Not to fix the parts, just take them apart looking for the fault, then bin it.

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Whipkick2 says:

Having worked on air cushions in other settings, I am surprised there isn't a safe lock or pin. So you can work on it

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Shawn says:

This is how it would play out with the techs at my last shop…

tech: "I need price and availability on a drivers air bag and a clock spring"
Hyundai parts dept: "air bag is 3 days out, but the clock spring is in stock"
tech to customer: "I diagnosed and found a faulty clockspring"

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nick's Random views says:

Hey Ray do another video with your Russian voice I found that to be highly entertaining 😂

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bd O says:

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jean-Francois Aubry says:

Im so disapointed…no phone call during this car balloon cable replacement procedure…the whole point to watching you is for the douh douh douh doh douh !

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Galen Vetterick says:

I never thought about the air bag hitting me as I had that happen years ago. I worry about the seatbelt that goes right across to where my pacemaker is now.☠️

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars rwbishop says:

For taking low resistance readings, you can short the leads together till a steady value is obtained, then press the "REL ∆" key on your meter… doing so will zero the display & take the lead resistance out of the equation. That's one of the main (but not only by any means) uses of that key… very handy! Look it up in the manual. Most, if not all, quality meters are equipped with a Delta key as standard.

(For those that don't know, in math & engineering, the Greek uppercase letter Delta "∆" is used to denote change… look it up!)

    Cool videos, Thanks!

… and someone is bound to ask, option/j results in the ∆ character on a Mac… I bet windows is similar.

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Andersen says:

If you can't figure out what it is, figure out what it isn't. Calculateous Eliminateous.

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tony says:

Awesome diagnosis. Impressive trouble shooting. You can null out the lead error with the REL Delta button.

  97. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars frankthespank says:

These KIA/Hyundai’s and their “clock spring’s”…. I replaced the clock spring in my Mom’s 2014 KIA Sorento already, I didn’t even know what the hell a clock spring was until then, lol But her cruise control buttons were intermittently working and then she got an airbag failure light, I scanned it with my scanner and she had a code for the clock spring. There was a recall on them but I guess not her specific car so the dealership told her to go pound sand… I replaced it with an aftermarket replacement, everything has worked since.

  98. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Than Oliver says:

JK wranglers are known to have clock spring issues if driven in a lot of dusty areas, which mine was not, but i do have the passenger airbag recall, has yet to be done because its not currently on the road.

  99. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Terrence Stiffler says:

I'am hooked on watching your videos.
