Nevertheless your welding skills and luck are both far better than mine.
its going to rust out in a year
I love your videos but that was just sad
Alot of hybrids use 410 stainless witch is magnetic
That was painful, but you got 'er done! I've done things like this and would have gone to my scrap pile and found a piece of 3/8 rod and welded to the clamp and made a whole new hanger (before putting it on the pipe). 10 minutes tops.
Kinda good Shade Tree job.
Just a Reminder, there are many types of Bolt On Exhaust Hanger fitments, that are available…
for not having shield gas those welds are decent enough
Wow, you weren't kidding when you said you don't know how to weld. But listen, you did a good job for what was needed. I am sure that frankenstein contraption will last long enough for the catalytic thieving bastards to come around and then they can just put a new one on.
Going back and forth on if I want to pursue a mechanic career, the dealership I work at offers school for it. At the same time there’s better jobs.
Just take a couple of your off days and practice, but you absolutely can weld sst to mild steel and it normally comes out real pretty but fit makes a big difference
you are one of the most honest mechanics I have ever met….they are few and far between…
Hey still a better welder than a lot "tool restoration" content creators!
FYI next time grind it clean then clean each time you hit it with flux wire. Flux is just like stick it leaves behind slag. I went to school for welding learning all 3 tig, mig and stick. And the finished product looks like an M16 Front Sight.
I actually weld for a living on industrial equiptment. My biggest ree was you welding with no glove and short sleeves. 😂 got many burns that way. Nice job though. It aint gotta always be pretty but it needs to work and it needs to be strong and you checked those boxes
Glad you were able to make the repair, but any competent muffler shop could have welded that factory bracket back on in 10 mins or less. Personally I would rather have a shop tell me if something would be better handled by someone else than to cobble something together that took way longer than it should have and frankly does not work as well.
Why did I pay 19.99 for something that was 9.99? Thanks commission earned. Smh
Hey there are YouTube videos on how to weld the right way you go check some of the out 😂
That was very cool of you to help the customer save money sir. Very cool 😎
A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain’t.
If I had this problem on my own car, I’d probably run some stainless steel zip ties around the exhaust to the hanger and call it a day 😂
You gotta get that metal clean before you start and between passes, chipping hammer and wire brush, learn it, live it, love it ! Thanks again for the awesome vidgeya!
Cleaning the metal before welding would give you a much nicer weld!
That was such a ghetto repair. It worked tho.
Well done!
You've done the shade tree mechanics proud. The paint was a nice luxury.
you left the booger up there on purpose lmao
It works but…….
you should cleaned the old wield first then it should wielded right together !
Prius 🤮
Sorry Ray, really should have been sent to a welder that could weld stainless. It worked, good on you but future fixers will wonder what the hell happened. First video I ever cringed at. But I will continue to watch your channel, never miss a video.
There's holes in that bracket, clearly made for baling wire. (Or a wire coat hanger)
Like the metal music during the cutting. Try slipknot or tool next time. Just add name if band and disclaimer line abd you should be fine to use the music.
Step away from the saws-all and welders….. everyone has their strengths and weaknesses …. we now know Rays Kryptonite…😄
What a silly design why didn't they use a U clamp on the exhaust to the hanger bracket I bet any rust will go to the that area and rot it
does it look fine? no. it works? yes… well done
It's hideous! I like it.
On the next hold my beer watch this weld 😆
Yes. I enjoyed this video of ingenuity and rays of bright light.
I hope you are happy, Ray! Mr. Melnick, my 11th grade welding and fabrication teacher tragically took his own life while watching this video! Expect a visit from the authorities! 🤣😂🤣
Rainman Ray the fabricator! 5 stars review, I would have tried to hose clamp it somehow but that would have failed pretty quick.
WOW, THAT MUFFLER BRACKET ADVENTURE SHOWS YOU HAVE IMPRESSIVE MANUFACTURING SKILLS. Therefore the state of California would insist that you purchase a special manufacturing license to go along with your permissions and fees for working on car repairs in general…. Yay Florida?
J ray use gloves at lest were that wedding ring is..one spark and mate, you have barbiqued finger…look you try good on you…
would have broke again if you didnt add the second bolt for triangulation nice job
Well I think you are better at welding than you are at fixing cars, ya kinda suck at both 🙂 just kidding great idea, I think I would of just used an old style hanger.
Was that a crack I saw on the rocker panel?
Nice save. Reduced their cost to minimum
that is ss ya need 304 wire with argon mix with co2, we call you the Dober now
No comment on the welding, but for me, anytme I have the wiper arm away from glass and doing shit, I have a folded up packing blanket under ther in case the bare arm, and all it's potential anger, slaps against the glass without the blade to make the outburst meaningless
It may be ugly but it will hold
I am a welder and that is typ 430 magnetic stainless steel. its way cheaper than normal stainless. it lasts way longer than steel. typ 304 is normal stainless and typ 316 is marine grade.
Ray if it works it ain't stupid
I'm pretty sure there are a couple of stainless steel alloys that are still magnetic, I'm no expert though.
A wise man called Scott (Vehcor) once said, An angle grinder and some paint make me the welder that I ain't. Unless you are someone like Isaac (IC Weld) you do what works for the customer and gives them the best ROI and that you did. 👍👍
You Can weld stainless with a tig 🤣
Nice Camera shot while welding, Dope!!!
I won't comment on your welding, as I'm not much better. I will say, you should clean the parts you weld first. The welds are stronger on shiny bare metal.
How can one send you stuff? I want to send you a can of weld-thru zinc primer for when you weld a bracket back on an exhaust again, it'll protect it from rusting from areas you didn't weld over like the backside of the bracket and a surge protector- you're probably not running a high voltage welder like a 220v or even 180v (I use a 140v) but still it's good to be safe, especially on customers vehicles.
I'm no welder at all, so I might have continued something more hardware oriented like the U bolt, but whatever works.
Sometimes good enough, is good enough. Thanks for sharing!
Ray. I love how you're a perfectionist when you fix cars. You're not messy and half A$$, like some mechanics!
Absolutely awesome repair!
Adapt & Overcome.
And you did.
Great to see the career long wire brush again 🙂 Love seeing good old tools still in use.
Ray, where the hell is my welding mask?? 🤔
Improvise, adapt, and overcome comes to mind.
As a fellow booger welder, just clean stuff and you’ll amaze yourself
😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Proud of that caveman welding and ingenuity
sorry ray i ment to say my son has a mink
A nice solution but a coat hanger and some wire cutters and pliers I would have backed it out, Before your 28 minute video I have never commented on any of your but I have to comment on this one come on right too long 30 minutes you're killing me 😆 🤣 JK I will continue to watch your channel Signing out & powering down
ray i could not have done it any better my has a mink with gas and does it way better but me i am not good at all.😅
Ray, I noticed you didn’t have any welding gloves. So come clean with us. You didn’t have a welding helmet either, did you?
From watching your technique I could see you using the cup of your torch to lean against your work in an effort to hold your aim as you fired off the welder and made numerous small puddles rather than a continuous bead. Makes me think you couldn’t even see the weld puddle. What say you? 🙂
This is one that should have gone to a muffler shop.
personally would have turned the ubolt the other way but ive done worse.
I had a car where the subframe had rusted thru in the bolt holes . My machanic wanted $1000 for a new sub frame, but the welder down the road could welded it back in position for $95. It is good to have an economical man on the job.
I'm late happy weekend my friends
The grinding should have been done before the weld was attempted, solder/weld you are better off with 2 clean pieces of metal.
Dear God that was ugly and truly painful to watch
I'm a Gorilla welder myself ugly but strong.
For Flux core you don't need the shield cup on the gun without gas hooked to it makes it easier to get in tough places and saves you a buck or two not using them.
Thanks for sharing.
hanger strap would of worked. it is pliable, yet strong, lol.
Man I would just took a rod and bent it and used clamp to hold it on lol I like your way better
Ray it the bird who was flying over you backwards while you welding.
Just to agree with your self-assessment…your weld did look like a Mud Dobber Convention…
He said he “wants to reach around”, “hit it from the back”, “oooh that’s tight”…Ray I thought this was a family friendly channel….??? 😂😂
Man you need to weld that starter on that POS nasty old Ford f-150 the world needs. I need it that. All you need is a tree and old chain.
closest I seen you get to Rube Goldberg status.
Silicone the rubber bushing please!
That exhaust system is more than likely made out of grade 403 stainless steel (UNS S40300), one of its physical properties is being magnetic another is that it has good corrosion resistance. The problem with welding that material is that you get loss of chromium where it is welded, hence the corrosion around the areas that have been welded unlike every where else that is devoid of any corrosion.
Ugly? Check (But, it's under the car so who cares?!)
Extremely functional? Check
Keep ~30 lbs. out of a landfill or going to China as scrap? Check
Saved the customer a pile o' money? Check
What's not to like? 👍
So… you can buy clamp on exhaust hangers for pretty cheap. About the same price as that exhaust clamp you welded to
If there is a will. There is a way. Good Job!!!!!!!
Hey,whatever works best for you is ok in my book. I use the titanium easy flux welder from harbour freight. Makes really good welds, even on sheet metal.
there should be more mecemacs like you , instaid of these replacement hacks ive worked with in the past . great vid
That’s why I’m afraid to take my car to the shop they cannot complete a sample test they try to fix something they Broke the only good thing is left on the car game over
Good for you saving the customer some money . I don't have a welder , but have made some stout hangers out of muffler clamps . You are a good guy Ray .
Ray, Try more wire feed. Too slow makes you arc too long and overheat the metal.
