I'd never heard of prefilling oil filters till I started watching Ray. It's makes no sense to prefill as the pump does it without putting any undue strain on a component
😄
O
i worked as a gas jockey during the early 70's an that was the quickest way to sell oil , grab the dipstick as soon as the customer shut down , before the oil had a chance to drain down my coworkers sold so much oil that wasnt needed cause the customer had no idea to wait it to drain down . good vid
President Eden is pleased.
Great job. What about the air filter though!!!!???
That would suck bad if you worked at a quickly oil change place and had to swap that filter on a car that just came off the highway.
Hey buck, are you watching?
It look like you had a extra lug nut on the floor by your hoist
Air filter??
I really like your attention to detail.
That leads to better car maintenence which improves safety for everyone and proper maintenence is cheaper long term than destroying things by skipping "unnecessary (but really necessary) repairs" until the dash warning lights come on.
wait till u find out audis have hydraulic filled engine mounts with sensors in them, that make the car go into limp mode when they blow 🙂
The oil cap shows it needs 5W30.
Very impressive how well you do your job while holding a friggin camera the whole time. Good view on the camera almost all the time and still efficiently gettin r dun.
Very irritating to listen to your incessant chatter about every single thing you are looking for,… finding & touching,…what you are going to do to it, and all your doodle, doodle doodle B.S. give it a rest,… will you???
Logic check – if the oil was a bit low @ 5 quart and you added another that's fine. But the logic of needing to compensate for what would needed to fill the oil filter does not correlate with the earlier stated comment about not needing to prefill an oil filter because this one sits at an angle that drains into the sump and therefore is empty when the engine is not running. In most vehicles I would agree with needing to add enough to fill the filter, but not in this particular application. Not saying that the 5 quarts was enough, it needed 6, but I am saying the empty oil filter was not a factor in this case.
Ray got the floor mat oriented correctly and aligned the "710" fill cap correctly, but my OCD level is higher than his because I was disturbed by the oil filter capacity paradox he missed despite having made seemingly contradictory statements on the topic. I enjoy him, his deezle truck, and his excellent videos which are both entertaining and educational. I also feel that he would want to know if he makes a misstep in any of his presentations.
I'm surprised Buick has not gone the way of Olds and Pontiac and all the others.
If you fill the filter and wait to install it, it will absorb most of the oil… I do this all the time on everything.
what happens if u put to much oil in and didn't check for correct oil capacity?
Yes those mounts are EXPENSIVE
Ray I'm curious if you are college educated. I hope you say no because, though I was a prof for more years that I care to admit, I love finding examples of people who have great lives and make great contributions to us all in the trades. It ought to be a path more travelled. Regardless, bless you for seeking excellence and competence and consideration of others in all you do. Those are the best human qualities – whether backed by formal education or not.
I'm sure u over looked a access cover for said oil filter…… gm can't be that stupid. to not put one on that car 😎
that's a gm design for u… make it real hard to work on
Oh another GFY oil filter
in-claw-vey
How these engines design an oil filter to b put there is beyond me.
You have Car Quest filters? How old are they? Advance bought them out years ago.
My 1995 Taurus had them. They were called hydraulic engine mounts.
You handle those nuts like a pro.
dont forget all the nuts, need them,,
You're suppose to pre-fill the filter then tilt the car so that you can screw on the filter without spilling.
So where does your shop purchase cases of brake cleaner! Hope you get a great discount!!
Well I'm assuming they didn't get the extended warranty. And lack of oil changes could lead to timming chain failure. Ya, I hate inverted filtes.
Enpour
Those liquid mounts have been around for years , had them on my pos Ford Focus 2005,,took them off , cleaned them out , filled them with Polly rubber waited for them to set ,put them back on the next day , no more problems, look on utube they show you how to do it,,
What a problematic car… engine is junk, trans is junk and gm can't design bump stops to last over 50k miles.
I have a 2009 Acadia awd and paid to have the timing chains, tensioners, oil pump, water pump, ect. done while the engine was dropped. After I had trans issues and ended up replacing the tcm and replacing the radiator (integrated trans cooler likes to clog and causes even more problems).
If they come back see if you can check the breather on the back of the engine on the drivers side, they usually completely clog with gunk… and there is no pcv valve. Also see if they'll do a transmission fluid service, that might actually prolong that terrible design. I found that mine was overfilled by a couple quarts when I bought it and it was black as night.
Mine has almost 190k miles now and is still running great, just takes some preventative maintenance to get you there.
Air in tires?😅
I really need to invest in brake cleaner stock.
Ray it’s obvious that you don’t pay for the brake clean you waste. Generally enjoy your videos..but damn dude lighten up on the complete waste of brake cleaner..it’s more than played out in your videos and seems childish and cringy. Use it when needed but the complete obvious waste and just spraying until the can is empty just to do it is frankly ridiculous and juvenile.
I don't miss my Traverse (same as the Enclave) and that awful oil filter location. Maybe my Pilot isn't so great since it dribbles on the control arm, but it's not right next to the exhaust.
Whenever you bounce tires you either need to go "Boiing, Boing, Boing" or insert the equivalent sound effect!
The engineer that put the filter in that engine location should be castrated!
You are such a nut with the spraying of the brake clean! gives me a chuckle every time.
When you were bouncing those tires around I was waiting for the “Sweet Georgia Brown” music to start. 🙂🏀
Leave it to GM to put the oil filter in a dumb spot.
Hey everyone – sending this note to those who don't have Jesus, yet.
We are in what the Bible calls the "end times," and I'm sure you see the signs all around us.
Please – believe in our Lord Jesus Christ today. He died on the cross to cover our sins so that we
may be saved, and to avoid the judgment that is coming. When you believe in him, and accept His gift of salvation, you will be saved.
Our time is so, so short. I am praying for you all.
Ephesian 2:8; John 3: 16-18; 1 Corinthians 15: 1-4; Romans 10: 9-10
I’ve done my wife’s Acadia so many times I go in there with it still hot and rarely get burned pulling the filter.
Full synthetic Mobil One every change and so far so good.
One of these days you are going to do the long range pouring of oil and sneeze sending it everywhere.
Sorry for swaying, I think I had too much to drink last night. ,😜🇦🇺
I specifically remember writing in a friend's car which was one of those Buick enclaves and he said the motor mounts were bad.
Thes Buick engineers dont care about where they put maintenance parts. SMH
What cameras do you use?
I had a 99 Tercel had the oil filter located in much the same spot.
Hey Ray, curious about something. I see you use brake clean on pretty much anything. On my can it states you should avoid it touching plastic and stuff like that. Are you using a special kind or that non-clorinated stuff?
An American trying to sound intelligent; hilarious…
Don't like aftermarket oil filters. Use the OEM please.
ok my pet peve BRAKE CLEANER is just that BRAKE SYSTEM CLEANER so ALL you idiots quit using it for spills NOT what it is meant for!!
My Ford contour V6 had the exhaust pipe 1/2 inch from the drain plug. Couldn't use a socket, had to use box end wrench. The filter would unscrew part way and run into the radiator.
The fans make it sound like it is pouring down rain ouside~
Is the oil pump in the engine block on the 3.6 V-6. The old 3.8 litre (231 cubic inch) V-6 had that problem. You needed a kit to replace it out of the block. It clogged easily. If you didn't get it work on, it would many times end up with a broken connecting rod, cooking the engine. When I was selling auto parts, my suppliers would not touch a 3.8 V-6 with a 10 foot pole!
Hey Ray, Could the motor oil spillage on the mount dgrade the seals and cause early failure? Also, is it possible the residue you saw on the mount was from previous oil changes and the mount is acutally ok?
If I ever need brain surgery, I'm having Ray do it.
That old version 3.6 is doomed if they don't change oil every 4k
Yep. My mom has an equinox with the 3.0. Same oil filter design🥴
That oil filter reminds me of the old GM quad 4 engine. Same stupid replacement problem.
whaaaaaa? He used a funnel… lol.
not a real good idea to run that engine down to zero%
Hi there Ray, cuestión, when changing oil does putting the key in the on position, would that fill the filter with oil??
I saw on one video you had Knipex pliers – how are they?
Surprised the crank seal wasn't leaking, that engine eats them.
The One Armed mechanic
wow not a single doodley doo today
On my '04 Chevy Trailblazer with the 4.2 I6 engine, the oil filter is vertical along the passenger side of the block. I always pre-fill the filter. On my '99 Plymouth Grand Voyager with the 3.8 V6 it is horizontal on the front of the block. I do not pre-fill that filter. So my philosophy is I pre-fill when I can, and I don't when I can't, and I don't worry about it either way.
Ending transmission now.
He must have stock in brake cleaner
I was always told the only oil that needs to be in the filter before you install it is on the O-ring so that its easier to remove the next time and it makes for a better seal. As for the placement of that filter…. WTF GM? I swear GM does some things right where you just sit back and say… OK, I like where this is going, and then they go and do stuff like this where you just facepalm.
I worked for company that made those engine mounts. Did you know that the Camaro had 5 different engine mounts? On the ZL1 it has active mounts where a diaphragm pushed on the glycol in the mount when you hit the race/track setting making the mount super stiff. In normal mode it will allow the mount to control all NVH.
Ray have you ever dealt with a 3.0L Buick Lacrosse? More specifically the transmission not shifting?
♥️🧰🔧
@Rainmam
An old trick I use to change those filters without spilling a drop.
Shove a 0.5L disposable plastic cup over the filter, grab de cup firmly for its last turns and no oil will be spilled.
Lol Ray. I think you do the washer fluid spillage on purpose to make my ocd flare up. Take care man, and enjoying the videos!
sad thing is Ray mentioned the sticker.. last 3 times i went to get a oil change the guy forgot to sticker me. Ray remembered its important!
You don't have to worry about oil leaks, IF you don't put any oil in the engine to begin with !
Loved this video. Ray is so humorous as he's doing good work.
Gumption…
Using that oil life monitor will not help engine longevity.
Remember the torque value for all Volkswagens is “gut und tight”. Don’t block me!! 😂😔
Ray, you are like my morning cup of coffee.. I love watching you.. Keep up the great work.. 👍
You look as if you don’t have your shit together with the shirt tucked in and no belt. 😅 not trying to be a ass but get a belt 😂 keep up the good videos!
I've "pre-filled" many of horizontal oil filters when changing oil on my cars. I just add enough to soak the paper filter and have just a little oil inside, so it won't dump out.
Why would anyone design a car that was so hard to change the oil and filter?
How does the generic oil supply, work in all brands of vehicles, impossible. Each maker has their own specs, besides Weight all pertains to emissions, mpg etc…VW on mine must have 502/504 all oils do not meet that spec, just like GM Porsche, Ford, all oils, do not meet their model year specs…got to read the manual and oil lables
The oil filter is ridiculous seriously are engineers on drugs when they design these vehicles
VW 2.0T Golf R 2019 and in all my previous and current VW's have filter right on top, and I use vacuum to suck out oil, no climbing under neath, the vac gets every last drop. And it doesn't use the resource wasting, waste producing metal can filters, just replace the cartridge element, less waste, with even more filter capacity, Mahle, Bosch,Mann
I assume you have pads on those uprights for the lift? Otherwise how do you keep from denting and scratching the hell out of the door?
I loath filter placement like that. Then I see my dad's '70 Mach I has the thing in a stupid easy to reach location.
FYI those are Lisle 50750 Oil Filter Pliers
Going to 0% oil life is not a good idea on a 3.6L GM engine. Tell them to keep doing that if they want timing chain issues.
On my tundra you have to take the skid plate off. Why do manufacturers design them like that? I had an old blazer, 94 I think, that had a factory relocate kit for the oil filter and it was a 10 second job. and thats a pos gm
Yeah the 3.6 litler VVT from Gm are annoying to change out, the majority of 3.6 litler V6's are 6 quarts of 5w30
