Come along as I show you how to bypass the Passlock™ security system that GM used in their older pickups and cars. It is a really simple system similar to their older PASS-Key system. The majority of people around here don't want to fix them properly because they are rust buckets. Can't blame them I guess....

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ronald Johnson says:

Sure seems like an effective, quick fix, but why not eliminate the security lock completely? Expense?

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cheepchipsable says:

With the crimp and seal you probably have a lot of people who they don't work for and they get annoyed when everyone tells them how great they are. 😆
Could be the difference in brands.

Why do the mfrs install this crap ? Interlocks on this that & the other thing . The customer is paying for something they don't want !

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars imystery man says:

Is this pass lock system on all 06 silverado pickups or just the fancy versions?

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Buffington says:

(Thanks for teaching others how to fix it wrong)….. Later when the repair fails…. Mechanic says " Well you know if you had fixed this right the first time, you wouldn't be having this problem now". Customer, says " But you're the one who fixed it!" Mechanic says, " But you couldn't afford to have it fixed right!" Customer says, "So you fixed it WRONG?" Mechanic says, " That was all you could afford!"

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kenny Cunningham says:

I used to do something like this on the Cadillacs except if it were 3 olms I went to radio shack and got a 3 olm resistance and would cut and splice it in.

Crimp and seal connector. Good for interior applications. Engine bay, id say sodering wires or presoder connectors are better along with shrink seal.

If this guys getting tons of water insidr his car…..he's got bigger problems lol

Not the crimp and seal connectors again! I can’t believe you keep using those despite what all of us experts tell you. 😂. Keep doing you, Eric. Great job as always

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Riding With The Reid's says:

You my friend need to invest in HP Tuners. Yes, it costs a little $ up front, but for $100 you could have disabled the Passlock in about 5 minutes w/o cutting any wires or taking anything apart. Few strokes on the keyboard & presto. Goodbye Passlock.

Edit: I have the same Snap-On flush cuts and will agree, they are amazing. Until someone borrows them, drops them and the tip breaks off after smacking the concrete. And of course the only Snap-On guy in town up and left.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Lemaster says:

Actually these are the PASS KEY II from 2003 on down then GM changed it to PASS KEY III in 2004 on up and have 32 different resistors you can use and after 2004 no pellet notch was engraved in the key shaft relocated to the head of the key. The only thing by doing this if you have full coverage insurance and you car or truck gets stolen being that the security system was altered they can deny a insurance claim for tamerpeimg with OEM anti theft equipment.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 2491kridge says:

I’ve been using those crimp and seal butt connectors for years and have literally never had a single comeback with them, some people are just way to obsessed with wanting everyone to solder everything lol

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Julian says:

Good engineering there. Whenever I used a variable device like your resistor, when I got it set I would put a dab of fingernail polish on the screw and housing to hold it in place. If you ever need to adjust it again the nail polish breaks free easily.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars itsalltaken says:

D o you have a video on how to fix the tow/haul mode button on the same model years? I have an 03 sierra tow haul mode button stopped working. It only worked when I would tilt the wheel.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Roepke says:

“Robert is your mother’s brother!” 😂

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TechnicalLee says:

1.28kΩ seems out of the tolerance range, the closest would be a #5 key with a 1.13kΩ nominal resistance. Would it be better to set the variable resistor to 1.13kΩ in this case, or is the problem caused by the passlock reader going out of tolerance? Wouldn't it be easier to just measure the key with an ohmmeter and make the variable resistor the same value?

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gmtail says:

PATS2 was just a carryover from VATS. There was only 15 combinations of resistances needed, the only difference is the PATS2 resistor was built into the lock cylinder vs in the key. So all you have to do is read the resistance on the 2 signal wires, and replace it with the same value.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Douglas Kuhn says:

Next time you get a "PASS Loc" no crank, look at the 'Starting Procedure' in the owner's manual. I once had a 2001 Malibu that gave me problems and cost alot of money at Dealership to replace ignition switch. Fix lasted about 2 weeks and then 'No Crank' and "security" light struck again!!
I towed car home and eventually dove into problem. Owners Manual gives 'Code Relearn' procedure which I used. Never had another problem after that. Dealer screwed me!!

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Hancock says:

Also, anyone that moans about crimp connectors can go pound sand. Haven't they noticed what literally all the connections in the OEM wiring harness are made with? As long as they are decent quality and crimped properly there's no issue.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Paul Bush says:

I was just saying to myself “I wish Eric O would post another repair vid using crimp connectors” and low and behold! Very ASMR

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bone Daddy says:

Real men don’t use seam cutters, the use dull blades!

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Hancock says:

This was a very cheesy antitheft system that depended on sliding mechanical contacts in the ignition switch that were lubricated with grease. Of course when it's -30 degrees outside that grease could turn into a solid and block the contacts apart, causing a no-start. Had that on my '03 Saturn.

Of course they could have done something even worse with that part, like have the ignition switch potentially shut off while driving, disabling the airbags and killing people.. Oh wait, they did that too!

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Randy Robison says:

I wonder if you need a chip key after doing this trick? Thanks for sharing.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Devin Gray says:

I personally dislike scotch lock connectors use in the elements. Inside a dash I'm fine with it.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hammerjockey says:

Ive done it with blazers and s10s, no need to find the resistance etc, I simply cut the wires and connect them to themselves. Leave the key on for 45 minutes with the charger hooked up to follow the relearn procedure and you now have a 0 ohm key! Ive done this 6 or so times over the years

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars aniBlueRoseVamp says:

Can always rig up a floor starter switch. lol But god I always loved a good remote start switch, when working on car's and trucks.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eugene Polan says:

I figured that if you were presenting this method on the video it must have worked, but part of me was hoping something would go wrong, so I could say "Resistance is Futile!"

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bryan George says:

I had to do that to all three Grand Am's I have owned, but I also had a 97 Cavalier Z24 and no matter how hard I tried I could not get it to work.

  51. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Smith says:

my 1999 silverado had a problem with security light was the mother board had some bad solder joint had to have cluster rebuilt also low battery voltage could cause it as well

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob Barron says:

"Make it look like Best Buy's been here". That made me laugh.

  53. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Baughman says:

Love the crimp and seal connectors. Been working at a GM dealership for 30 years and haven’t had problems with them. The only problem is when the parts department buys cheap ones. It happened today installing a trailer brake controller, crimped the connector and the wire pulled out when I was testing it. SMH

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars D car21679 says:

I have a 2001 impala with the 3400. I had the same problem. Was also having issues with the a/c not working. It was an issue with the bcm having bad soldering. Replaced bcm, (had to get programmed at dealer) and all those problems were solved.

  55. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars julius liles says:

Locks and security systems only work on honest people. By the way plumbers know all about not being able to put a male inside a male, to bad the dingle berries in San Fran. don't know! 🐹

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Paul Laux says:

Definitely need to do this on my 04 impala. Won't start let in sit for 10 min starts right up

  57. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Terrence Carter says:

Very good video . Question 2k ohm resistor by pass would work on other cars or trucks too ?

  58. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SOVA Rides says:

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Infinite Velocity says:

or just don't buy a GM vehicle

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charles Kipp says:

I bought a 6.0 Silverado used for a winter vehicle a few years back, drove it home perfectly fine parked it changed all of the brakes and lines, and it never started again I spent hours upon hours researching looking for this fix and never found a good one I could follow to get the truck to start, and here you come years later and resolve it in 10 minutes. I love and hate this video all at the same time!

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fjord Driver says:

Still more secure than a 2020 Kia or Hyundai.

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ED YAGER says:

Hey I have the 2003 silverado and the security syatem light stays VERY DIM lite on the dash all the time even when the truck is off and key is out. Truck still starts and runs great. I had the cluster at united radio a bunch of years ago and it was off then..

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brad Silvestro says:

Would this work for an 03 Wrangler?

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fred Walker says:

Eric; some jobs you will never forget ! I have a few after 50 yrs. Here is one related to GM security ! I close the garage for 2 weeks every summer, +/- 4-5 summers age, I go in on Thursday,
. to do some paperwork.Been having “sticking “ ignition key on his 2001 Impala & no start. He puts it off! Now Towed in , his family want to go on their holiday Friday night! I check,,,needs ignition switch (in dash) No big deal, I call dealer, come pick up his key & bring to me Friday morning,,, I install,,,programme security,,,have a good holiday ! I said I would call the minute it’s done. No Prob ! Key comes @ noon,,install,,, put to programme with key, do some paperwork. Check in 10,,, no take ? Do again,, & again !? WTF Friday ! So I relearn again & stand & watch “security heartbeat relearn” Right in the middle of the hearbeat +/- 5 minutes, “ LOW WASHER” warning flashed,,,,,, disrupting relearn ! Put 2” of water in washers , relearn again,,,, bang,,, good ! That day ,,, I hate my job! What are the odds! 👍👍👍

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars neshobanakni says:

That yellow light was flashing. Why did you not start it one more time, to show that the new connections worked?

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Harn says:

You forgot the step where you test it right before you put the cover on so that you can definitively demonstrate that putting the cover on caused the fix to no longer work. It's a law of the universe.

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Disgruntled Egghead says:

This is all good given you already have the scanner and or meter, but hp tuners has gotten pretty cheap enough to be a reasonable replacement for what you just did. Plus you can do a ton of other things if you're brave/dumb enough.

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars nitrous07me says:

Wow 😂 but you still have to have a key to turn the tumblers anyway, I guess you could just Jamba screw driver and steal it

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jo300hn says:

    Should have soldered those wires.

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Galt1469 says:

You can't put the male into the male? Hmm. I saw people doing it in CA. Seriously, that was a great tip. Those things were pita

  73. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brad Wade says:

This GM security key issue resulted in the company I work for to stop buying GM cargo vans to the tune of 500 to 600 vehicles every year

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Norris says:

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Lenoir says:

I agree with the other comment the only time that I know of that this anti-theft crap stops a vehicle from being stolen or operating happened to me and my brother after we got gas one time and then his truck wouldn't run at all would not start nothing so I wish I would have known this trick back then but thank you very much love the video

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dave says:

Eric mentioned that he got the 0-5000ohm potentiometer with pigtail leads from Amazon. Was anyone able to find them? Is so, could you share a link?

  79. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alan Torrance says:

Connection by your press-connectors:- Why not are you not "tinning" the exposed copper with a little solder before clamping? That would protect the copper wire from oxidation and corrosion due to humidity ingress. Yes, it is another step in a convoluted process, but it is a stage that should not be omitted — REALLY! As an alternative, the two exposed ends should be twisted around each other mutually and soldered, and THEN, the heat shrink tube shrunk around them. This is an even better type of joint. Another form of joint is a mixture of soldering and compression:- a heat sleeve is put in reserve on one of the leads (usually the longer one), then your tool compression joint without a covering is put directly on the two soldered ends, then squeezed (if space allows and heat of soldering iron allows, the joint is soldered, then crimped, THEN the heat shrink tube is pulled over, and shrunk. Yes, a little of how to make a simple not-so-good job rather a bit more complicated, eh?

  82. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Leeper says:

I did this to my mom's car. It was so long ago that I got the resistor from RadioShack. And that was the very last time I ever set foot inside a RadioShack, because the sales clerk was more interested in spending 20 minutes to show some idiot how to use their phone than he was in spending 1 minute to ring up my purchase. That was a "Passlock" system I think, where the resistor is inside the lock cylinder and you just leave the key ON for 10 minutes for it to relearn the new resistor value.

Car thieves back in the day used to pull the fuse for OnStar. Couldn't track it. After that they bring an E.c.m. and an ignition cylinder with them. Open the vehicle, pop the hood. One guy plugs in the e.c.m. in and the other guy brings the key and cylinder. Dash lit up but travels. Nowadays you steal a Chevy truck and the transmission fails. Class action law suit
