Come along as I show you how to bypass the Passlock™ security system that GM used in their older pickups and cars. It is a really simple system similar to their older PASS-Key system. The majority of people around here don't want to fix them properly because they are rust buckets. Can't blame them I guess....

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ronald Johnson says:

Sure seems like an effective, quick fix, but why not eliminate the security lock completely? Expense?

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cheepchipsable says:

With the crimp and seal you probably have a lot of people who they don't work for and they get annoyed when everyone tells them how great they are. 😆
Could be the difference in brands.

Why do the mfrs install this crap ? Interlocks on this that & the other thing . The customer is paying for something they don't want !

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars imystery man says:

Is this pass lock system on all 06 silverado pickups or just the fancy versions?

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Buffington says:

(Thanks for teaching others how to fix it wrong)….. Later when the repair fails…. Mechanic says " Well you know if you had fixed this right the first time, you wouldn't be having this problem now". Customer, says " But you're the one who fixed it!" Mechanic says, " But you couldn't afford to have it fixed right!" Customer says, "So you fixed it WRONG?" Mechanic says, " That was all you could afford!"

I used to do something like this on the Cadillacs except if it were 3 olms I went to radio shack and got a 3 olm resistance and would cut and splice it in.

Crimp and seal connector. Good for interior applications. Engine bay, id say sodering wires or presoder connectors are better along with shrink seal.

If this guys getting tons of water insidr his car…..he's got bigger problems lol

Heat shrinkable butt connectors are the shit my guy!

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob Coats says:

Not the crimp and seal connectors again! I can’t believe you keep using those despite what all of us experts tell you. 😂. Keep doing you, Eric. Great job as always

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Riding With The Reid's says:

You my friend need to invest in HP Tuners. Yes, it costs a little $ up front, but for $100 you could have disabled the Passlock in about 5 minutes w/o cutting any wires or taking anything apart. Few strokes on the keyboard & presto. Goodbye Passlock.

Edit: I have the same Snap-On flush cuts and will agree, they are amazing. Until someone borrows them, drops them and the tip breaks off after smacking the concrete. And of course the only Snap-On guy in town up and left.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Lemaster says:

Actually these are the PASS KEY II from 2003 on down then GM changed it to PASS KEY III in 2004 on up and have 32 different resistors you can use and after 2004 no pellet notch was engraved in the key shaft relocated to the head of the key. The only thing by doing this if you have full coverage insurance and you car or truck gets stolen being that the security system was altered they can deny a insurance claim for tamerpeimg with OEM anti theft equipment.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 2491kridge says:

I’ve been using those crimp and seal butt connectors for years and have literally never had a single comeback with them, some people are just way to obsessed with wanting everyone to solder everything lol

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Julian says:

Good engineering there. Whenever I used a variable device like your resistor, when I got it set I would put a dab of fingernail polish on the screw and housing to hold it in place. If you ever need to adjust it again the nail polish breaks free easily.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars itsalltaken says:

D o you have a video on how to fix the tow/haul mode button on the same model years? I have an 03 sierra tow haul mode button stopped working. It only worked when I would tilt the wheel.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ian Oliveira says:

Crimp and shrink are great, the regular non sealed suck anything but scotch locks

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Drives11 says:

people only hate on crimps / solder when they don't know how to do it right.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Roepke says:

“Robert is your mother’s brother!” 😂

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TechnicalLee says:

1.28kΩ seems out of the tolerance range, the closest would be a #5 key with a 1.13kΩ nominal resistance. Would it be better to set the variable resistor to 1.13kΩ in this case, or is the problem caused by the passlock reader going out of tolerance? Wouldn't it be easier to just measure the key with an ohmmeter and make the variable resistor the same value?

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gmtail says:

PATS2 was just a carryover from VATS. There was only 15 combinations of resistances needed, the only difference is the PATS2 resistor was built into the lock cylinder vs in the key. So all you have to do is read the resistance on the 2 signal wires, and replace it with the same value.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Douglas Kuhn says:

Next time you get a "PASS Loc" no crank, look at the 'Starting Procedure' in the owner's manual. I once had a 2001 Malibu that gave me problems and cost alot of money at Dealership to replace ignition switch. Fix lasted about 2 weeks and then 'No Crank' and "security" light struck again!!
I towed car home and eventually dove into problem. Owners Manual gives 'Code Relearn' procedure which I used. Never had another problem after that. Dealer screwed me!!

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Hancock says:

Also, anyone that moans about crimp connectors can go pound sand. Haven't they noticed what literally all the connections in the OEM wiring harness are made with? As long as they are decent quality and crimped properly there's no issue.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Paul Bush says:

I was just saying to myself “I wish Eric O would post another repair vid using crimp connectors” and low and behold! Very ASMR

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Hancock says:

This was a very cheesy antitheft system that depended on sliding mechanical contacts in the ignition switch that were lubricated with grease. Of course when it's -30 degrees outside that grease could turn into a solid and block the contacts apart, causing a no-start. Had that on my '03 Saturn.

Of course they could have done something even worse with that part, like have the ignition switch potentially shut off while driving, disabling the airbags and killing people.. Oh wait, they did that too!

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Randy Robison says:

I wonder if you need a chip key after doing this trick? Thanks for sharing.

I personally dislike scotch lock connectors use in the elements. Inside a dash I'm fine with it.
