We have talked about making your own test lights (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-L_fw7xn19k) to use for substituted loads but how about when we are dealing with airbag circuits? What can you use to substitute an airbag or pretensioner or in this case a collapsible steering column device? AES Wave UTest Kit makes it easy with their resistor set and terminating device like I show in this video. -Enjoy!

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars D N says:

@South Main Auto Repair LLC . Eric where do you get the specs? Is it in the Service Information on ShopkeyPro or somewhere else? Have a couple I need to check but want the proper resistance.

    Thanks! Dale

Just got my kit, Thanks for the info!

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GNX157 says:

I have not identified a need for that kit but I know if I had one I'd feel a lot better.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Timo Wallin says:

oxidation on connectors of airback stuff is 96% reason for our ligth to come on here in Finland if the car has not bean bumbed that that i see.
1% is non airbag sytem fault(communication,battery,etc..). 1% is self made problems. Another 1% is bad airbacg module and last 1% part is from junk yard(ask why and you made my day).
And so the last comment is cold!
Make sure there is no pinfitment issue and if i may add use silicon greese to it live longer lifebefore you but it back.
Reason why i see 0% of airbag failing is as it would mean comeback to the maker of the hole line of cars like Toyota did with some cars if im not mistakeing…

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Devin Struchen says:

Thanks for your help and getting me to think about a problem I've been having. I just wish I had a kit like this to check the problem out. But I made a temporary 1 to do the job. Found out it's a bad sensor and not a bad wire like I thought. Thanks again and I enjoy the YouTube videos.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Todd Kelley says:

Learned another one, tks again Eric! If you run into one (you probably will) can you do a video in the 2011 and up F150 epas steering rack fail, ford says they just replace the entire rack, 1500 bucks whoa!

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Defender Mender says:

Hey Eric do you think AES Wave would give you one of their Uscopes to test out? I'm sure a lot of DIYers that watch might be interested as its affordable?

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars carl brandon says:

nice.i have not seen those . I have the kent moore J whatecer number for Gm and another tool for Chrysler. great ifo video. by the way I am only 2 minutes into your video. anyway back to the show. hope you have a great week.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Garth Mounce says:

Can you do a scanner run down? Review what you have and pros and cons to each?

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Salvadore Bertolone says:

Could you check the other side of the circuit with an inline resistor to clamp the current so it doesnt trip the bag? Im not sure a dmm runs enough voltage on a resistance test to trip it, but obviously the computer is running its own ohm test probably by a small voltage bias. Im not sure im brave enough to try this.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Van Time says:

could you check the resistance of the charge? to verify if it is bad?

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robinson's Motorcycle and Auto Entertainment Zone says:

    Yep love that kit

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scott B says:

I'm glad I haven't had an airbag problem thus far. I probably would have checked the circuit for an open. Boom. I am about to buy an Autel MS906BT as I continue my semi-retirement dive into learning auto repair just cause it's fun and I'd rather spend money on tools then repairs. I want to stick with an authorized USA dealer. I've bought from AES Wave before. Do you suggest anyone else? Automotive Equipment Specialists is cheaper but sounds like once you buy it from them it's between you and Autel. Thanks.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bighappy says:

He likely replaced the column due to an Air bag issue. which in turn, created yet another air bag issue. 😀

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kellys Peppers says:

That AES Wave kit is very nice, good to have test leads that you can trust and is a time saver. I have spend a lot of time rigging up test leads only to find they are lying to me.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marshall Heartley says:

I know that the amount of resistors that come with it probably won’t exactly equal to what you need but I think that you can use that adapter to test and see if the old GM anti theft in the column is giving someone fits as well. Not sure of the technical name for it but its where GM uses the resistor pack in the key to disable or enable the vehicle.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nick the car guy says:

I wonder if he pulled this steering column from a vehicle with a airbag deployed.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars wrr2112 says:

Less diagnostic, more hand tools, air tools, brakes, engine R&R, etc.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mr B says:

Nice vid for aes wave .
They do market some nice stuff
this terminal test kit comes from several brands from same oem .
I got a drawer organiser full of resistors and potentiometers for substituting sensors or faking signal values .
These terminal kits make job faster/safer but the diy guys can get by easily for small change and bit of ingenuity with solder iron and heat shrink .

This poor guy fitted a junk used column, least easy diag for u 🙂

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars * Justme * says:

How is the garden doing?? Please please update please.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris says:

The steering columns usually have to be replaced in these cars because there was a recall that affected cop cars and a bushing between the steering shaft falling apart in salt water areas, but they affect all cars regardless. I have an 07 CV that I bought brand new and had to replace the column because the steering shaft bushing failed (it's green, you can see it if you look under the column), and my car is in Arizona.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars throttle bottle says:

I wonder if he got an "underwater"/"flood" vehicle, very likely why it would be off in resistance, moisture ingress

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars throttle bottle says:

low ohm resistors, by the looks probably 1% tolerance. standard values for those working with low values daily. you should be able to order online from many places from cut reels or such.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars throttle bottle says:

airbag simulator BAH, use a real one and make sure your face is close by :))

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars FrugalPrepper's Garage & Garden says:

The steering column isn't junk. It just needs a resistor installed! 😉

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Big Dog50001 Automotive says:

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Cunningham says:

Excellent tip about a little known diagnostic procedure/tool

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheManny1952 says:

Mr. Oh, so in conclusion when you say the column is junk that means the explosive device has been detonated or will not detonate thus it Necessitates a new column are you soon it is not repairable in the field. I like the task it. Thanks

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Fischer says:

Needs another column? Can't just change a sensor? That's crazy. Love your videos and admire your knowledge and the family man you are. Great work as always and thanks so very much for sharing with everybody.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dwayne sullivan says:

AES believe has a decaded resistance box, could that be used you could actually dail in the correct resistance or do you have to have a specific resistor, Awesome video thanks for the info

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Christopher Kassner says:

I use that kit a lot. Hands down one of the best. Money well spent.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars S & A Auto Repair says:

There's an unmonetized(don't know if that's a word) value in using tools that are enjoyable to use. Doesn't matter if you make or buy them. It encourages and inspires to learn. I find myself looking for a reason to use that exact kit even when it's not necessary. You could have figured a way to just insert a resistor straight into the connector, but where's the excitement in that? Great job sharing as always my friend. Each One, Teach One!

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stuart Wright says:

Great info as always, Mr O.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Billy Yoder says:

Thank you Eric. Good job. No aes discount code offer? Tried entering SMA#1 and it wouldn't take it. 🖒

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Serafin Silva says:

Hey. You've been at this for quite awhile now. How about a blooper reel? You must have some.
