Customer Customer States Mechanic Fails Engine Transmission Gas Diesel off road race 4x4 street car daily driver scam dealership dealer technician how to

Hello everybody! good day to you and welcome back! I Guarantee this is going to be a very short video I'm uh, actually making this one to answer some comments that I saw on the last uh video about my fuel injector install on that Lb7 uh 2003, 2004 Silverado 2500 uh folks were wanting me to explain uh, injector balance rates in a little bit more detail and uh I don't have that truck here anymore. It left this morning but I can uh I can pull up balance rates on the 07 Silverado this one is a uh LBZ Urama Max it's the updated version from the uh, the ones that we had seen earlier I'll show you guys what's going on popping iny hood and I'll show you the difference in injector design and uh, that way I can ease some people's minds on the pain of uh, those injectors that are placed underneath of the valve covers. Let me get into this unit right here. Let's see.

Let's see. Let's see if I can see what I'm trying to see. Yeah, it's going to be tough, but it's in there. Just pass my catapillar engine fuel filter.

Let's find one of those lines. Okay, so right here we can see the injector common rail one Outlet Two Three fourth one's right there. We can see all of our individual injector feed lines and getting some illuminators down in there going to follow. Oh, it's so tough See, there's too much stuff in the way.

Little bit of light on the subject here. Yeah, this is too crowded on this side. Let's go over to the other side. Maybe I can see what we're trying to see here.

Okay, very similar situation. We've got the injector tubes coming in feeding fuel to the fuel injectors and there's one of the units right there. See that fuel injector right there in the center? This guy, let me point right at it. that thing right there now that does pass through the valve cover? Similar to the design of the Lb7, but the difference is is that return line? See that little blue Mark right there? That's the fuel return line for uh, these style of injectors.

Now these ones are able to be replaced without removing the valve cover. All you do is just unbolt the injector from its hold down clamp, disconnect that little electrical connector right there, disconnect that return line, and then usually those injectors will pop right out in a very similar fashion to what we saw on that earlier model Lb7, and again, this is the LBZ 2000 I think they made him and 06 and early production 07 I I think I'll have to double check, but a quick Google search. Uh, you guys will be able to beat me to it. here.

here's another view of another fuel injector right there. past that little electrical line, you can see her right there hanging out. Yep, so these ones do pass through. There's the uh, the fuel line connector for it.

and again got the return line connector and then the electrical connector. so those do pass through the valve cover, but they're nowhere near as a labor intensive to replace as uh, the Lb7 version. So let me hop in here and we're going to fire this thing up and I'm going to show you guys what balance rates are designed to do. beginning engine starting sequence now.
Beautiful! So this particular truck, this is my personal 2007 with 234,000 814 miles on the odometer. I Purchased this truck in I think 2016 with 18,000 on it. So I definitely put some time on here. now.

these injectors in this truck uh, they should have probably been replaced at about the 150,000 Mark and I've never done it I've also never pulled up balance rates on this thing to see see what they look like cuz I mean you can see she's pretty smooth right? The only thing I do get and I do believe I might need some fuel injectors in this at some point. Point uh number one based on mileage cuz these have gone twice as far as they should have. uh ABS light came on again. Anyway, what I'm going to do is I've got this feature enabled on this truck.

it's called a high Idle. You see, this engine was uh also used in some of the Uh 4500 and 5500 medium duty truck platforms and a lot of those Vehicles they needed a a high idle feature to run hydraulic pumps or uh additional accessories. So uh, the ECM on this engine is capable of a high idle function, but the 3500 and the 2500 trucks never received that capability. And uh, through the use of a uh, a power button right here I've been able to enable that high idle function here.

Let's shut her back down. Watch the tack real quick, hit the button, she goes up. Now there's three stages. A high idle on this truck.

There's stage one. We just enabled stage two right there there. see the idle and then this one. We're going to stage three.

see that that's too much. We don't need that one, so we're going to back her down there. We go now. in stage one: high idle I Can feel a little bit of a shutter and I'm thinking it might be injector related.

Yeah, I Feel it right here as well. So we've got higher RPM and low load. Therefore, I believe I may have have an injector issue. So what we're here to do is like I said I'm going to explain balance rates a little bit and uh, I'm also going to kind of preliminarily diagnose uh, potentially fuel injectors that may need to be replaced on on this Durmax right here.

So going, go ahead and pull this vehicle up on the scan tool and uh, we're going to pull up balance rates for uh for these injectors and then we can talk about a little bit. So we're looking for Silverado This is a K Silverado So it's got the K designation. K was the four-wheel drive chassis and the C was the rear wheel drive chassis. I Know that seems self-explanatory when we're reading it right here.

but uh, a lot of folks don't realize that you can have a C truck or a K truck. Your title will tell you that, and the VIN number will tell you that and this is a K Silverado I I Think it's inconsequential for the engine, but uh, other features within the scan tool depend on that. And again, that's there's our earlier production and then the LBZ. That's the late production right there.
So we're going to go 66 Duramax Turbo Diesel Vin number. Yep, see the K right there in the VIN indicating four-wheel drive. Let's go ahead and select. and I'm going to go into our fuel menus under engine automatic transmission.

Does it have AC Let's see, we're going for data engine data and I Believe balance rates work in data 2 on the last truck. So we'll check engine data 2. So we have engine speed here. We've got calculated fuel rate that's uh, in cubic millimet, there's a glare.

We got a fuel pressure pit, actual fuel pressure and then desired fuel pressure. Uh, these two pids here can be used to diagnose a pump issue. For example, the ECM is looking for 35 megap pascals of fuel I Think that's MPA me pascals and the actual is is close to it. If we're Desiring something higher and we don't get it, we may have some kind of fuel delivery problem.

Yep Looks like my pump's doing just fine. Fuel temp is 104 and fuel rail pressure regulator command 40% I'm not sure what that one's about Anyway, balance rates Here we go in Cubic: Mill That's how we measure fuel. What balance rates are going to do is basically it's an ECM correction to maintain a smooth idle. So if you've got one injector that's under fueling or one that's over fueling as a characteristic of its physical flow rate, not what the ECM commands and how much fuel is requested, but just its physical ability to flow fuel properly.

If those, uh, if an engine has, um, a misfire or it has uh A variation in idle speed, the ECM will correct that by using the balance rate feature. So if we take a look, cylinders 1, 2 and 3 it's pulling away 3 mm cubed at idle, 3 mm cubed at idle. Now cylinder 3 that's adding 3 mm cubed Cylinder 4 That one's balanced out at around zero or we just switch to negative 1. Cylinder 5-1 cylinder 61 and look at here.

Cylinder 7: that one's at a six. Now the ideal way to do this is foot on the brake engine at operating temperature so we're close and the vehicle should be in gear and that's going to give us the most accurate balance rate assessment. trying to get this scanner out of the Sun So once we switched into uh, the vehicle being in gear, we can see there's quite a huge spread on these. Got five here here and -3 here so that's almost 8 mm cubed between the highest and the lowest.

Uh I Would uh, suggest that if this was a customer's vehicle that we replace these injectors in this unit? That's actually more than I expected to find. But if we were to take this vehicle and give it a little bit of throttle, I'm still on the brake with my left foot. If we give this a little bit of throttle, watch what the balance rates do. idling up, idling up there we go: 0 000000000000 0 So the balance rates are not a fuel correction that is an engine idle speed feature designed to maintain a consistent and smooth engine idle.
If it didn't have that feature, this thing would be all it would be shaking around because we've got quite an excessive spread here. So similar and actually worse case than the Uh Lb7 that I worked on. Uh, this truck needs injectors as well. That's not always a clear indicator that there's an injector issue because we don't know if we have a cylinder with like low compression or we've got some uh intake valves that are all gummed up, a broken ring.

Uh, cracked piston? You know there's a lot of things that can affect engine speed at idle, but the most common way to initially diagnose that is is by using your balance rates. It lets you know what the ECM is doing to try to maintain that smooth idle in the vehicle. So seeing how this is my vehicle and I know that I've never put injectors in this and I know that they've never been replaced because I've done a a A VIN number warranty check on it and uh, I've done all the service on this thing for well over 120 something thousand miles6 whatever. Uh, math.

But I'm aware that these injectors have never been replaced by me and I've owned this vehicle throughout the service term of one particular set. Again, I've had it over 100,000 and it had 100,000 on it when I got it and they were the originals. Uh, when I purchased this thing. So I've got 234,50 180,000 something like that and that's sort of stretching it so kind of based on that.

Uh, and based on the fact that we know it's never been replaced and the CP3 pump has never shown us any problems. Uh, I would hypothesize that the injectors are showing a bit of wear at their ball valves, or perhaps there's some clogging at the little ports where the fuel is supposed to spray out and atomize. And let's put this into high definition mode here and get some Zoom action going. And if we look real close, we can see where the fuel holes are in the end of that nozzle.

right there, you can see them poking through the carbon and then moving over here to this new unit, we can see one hole right there. I think the light's just catching it perfectly. But yeah, even even in high def mode and some zooms, we can barely make out where those holes are. So uh, simply based on that um, this thing is actually due for a set of injectors at some point.

uh what? I want to do? and I'm kind of going to have to put that off for a while cuz uh, this truck has sort of been a uh, it's a custom project and it's a restoration project so to speak. So what I wouldn't want to do is just toss in a factory set and call it good because with the age and mileage on this, I would like to put a CP3 pump in it as well if I put a pump in it I would like to add an electronic lift pump similar to the one that we saw in the that white. Silverado So if I'm going to do an electric pump and I'm going to do a lift pump, obviously I'm going to have to do the set of injectors. but I would like to have a a higher-end type of injector uh, maybe even one that's designed for a little bit higher flow rate and again, me being me.
If I'm going to do a pump and a pump and injectors, then I should probably toss a turbo in it at the same time because you know we're over 200,000 and I know that this turbo has a an oil leak at one of the seals uh, a couple hurricanes ago I had used this truck as a um, a power supply to run some inverters overnight. I just kind of hooked them up with jumper cords and ran extension cables and everything. But then I ran the thing at idle all night and the following day I went to drive the truck and it was just rolling uh white smoke out of the tailpipe as I tried to drive. So when exhaust gas temps went up and it heated up those exhaust pipe, the exhaust pipes, all of the oil that had leaked out of the turbo and collected in the exhaust, it tried to boil out of it and it turned into this super rich white smoke.

I I thought I broke the thing ising all night but uh, it was just it. turned out it was a leak. So if I'm going to go in here and put in all that effort to put in injectors I Got to do a pump I Want to do an upgraded pump and doing all that I want to go ahead and put the uh, put a turbo in it as well. So it'll be a major Uh mechanical and fuel system restoration project on this when that comes around.

So uh, I can live with these right now. It has not shown me any problems. Uh, again, it didn't fail the way that the Uh previous Duramax had failed. Where the return fuel return through.

You know. Remember for the the small little black connectors on there, there's a pressure side coming in and there's a return side coming out and that is there. so fuel can continue to flow through those injectors to help keep them cool. Cuz you got to understand we're running 20, 25, sometimes 30, 35,000 PSI in those fuel rails from the highpressure injection pumps.

And when you compress something and pressurize it, you create friction within its molecular structure and that friction creates Heat So the enemy of mechanical components is heat, so we have to run fuel through it to help cool it off. And that's also why a lot of these diesel trucks have a fuel cooler. As the fuel returns back to the tank, let me climb down here underneath and I'll show you the fuel cooler assembly that's not cool. Okay, so there's our uh, there's our tank right there right here in front of the tank.

We've got this little miniature radiator and that's just fuel coming in and fuel going out and this act as a cooler for the fuel that goes back into the tank. And that's fuel that has become heated up after having passed through the fuel injectors. So in a nutshell, that is what balance rates are for. That's the purpose of them.
It's a good diagnostic tool if you can understand the system and if you can eliminate all other options, you can hypothesize that a vehicle should have fuel injectors replaced uh, kind of based on those Balance rates. Now you won't notice that again at higher Uh idle or higher RPM under load. because now the ECM is just relying on injector pulse to deliver quantities of fuel based on loud noises based on throttle, uh, and load and things of that nature. So hope that helps.

Uh I Hope my explanation was understandable and uh, you guys have a better idea on uh, on what injectors and fuel injection and diesel fuel injection in particular Uh is all about. So guys, let me know what you think about this. The comment section down below I'm going to go and close this one out. told you it was going to be a short video and uh, it's not going to be an hour and a half this time.

Please don't forget to tap that like button while you're down there commenting and most importantly, have yourselves a fantastic day. See you guys later! End of short video and today into fuel injector explanation into transmission. Wait wait wait oncore I Just thought of something cool I'm going to go ahead and just check out balance rates on this truck too. Why not? That's what we're doing.

Let's do some comparing and contrasting. Hey Mr Dave are you here? I think I can start this truck. We were doing front end work on it. Yeah, this is another older one.

uh, similar to that white one we just worked on except this one's the 3500 and it's a douly. This is the one that everybody thought that I broke the or wrecked my truck cuz they saw this thing in the parking lot earlier and this one's not mine as you guys can clearly see Mr Dave sir, Hello May I Run this vehicle Yeah, is that good to go? Okay, just want to make sure I don't want to start it and blow it up. No oil in it or whatever. Yeah, let's hop in this unit real quick.

Beginning engine restocking sequence: Yeah, this is another Lb7 similar to the one. uh, almost exactly like the one we just worked on. So let me back out of this menu and pull up the next uh, next set here. Yeah, we're looking at 07 Silverado we want uh I think this is an ' 04 maybe wrong memory shot.

This one's a 2002 66 lb7 four-wheel drive. Uh, it's also a K truck with 26,6 162 mil. Oh no 666 666 the mar of the Beast Naughty Naughty Jungle of love I hate it it when they do that. No, it's cursed anyway.

26 56,600 some change. Uh yeah, let's I've got powertrain pulling up. Let's go Aliceon 5speed Yep. Uh Federal Emissions this 2022 I Think it's an F450 that there's no DPF on the truck I Think it's not right.

It's not right. It's not right. It's not right Engine data Engine data: 2 if I Recall twice. Yep.

now this one may be a little skewed because it's not up to Temp and uh, that's a part of how we need to, uh to check balance rates, but we might get a uh, a good preliminary measurement here. Okay, so I've got 1 through eight pulled up. Let's put her in gear and see what she does, Put on the brake. she's in drive and taking a look.
2.2.5 1.6 -3 Yeah, these are. They're okay. they're close. but I guarantee being an Lb7 at 256,000 Somebody has put fuel injectors in this one at least once.

That's a guarantee on this one. It was probably done uh, under warranty way back when when it was built. Let's go take a look at the valve covers real fast. I Know half of you guys are going.

didn't you say you weren't going to make this a super long video? I I did and I'm not. but you know in the sake of being thorough couldn't hurt. Oh yeah, look at there got the tell tail red RTV sealant on that upper cover. Yeah, so somebody has put a set of injectors in this.

Uh, Once Upon a Time So this is not the original set I could I'd bet money on that one, but that doesn't mean that. uh, that's not loose. Yeah, that doesn't mean that there isn't a little bit of wear on these units, but uh, it's nowhere near as bad as it could be. This one's got a new thickum.

Okay, before we go off on some crazy, stupid long tangent again: I'm going to go see you guys later. Thanks for watching and have a great day! Goodbye.

All this talk of lift pumps and fuel coolers and injector replacement has me convinced more than ever that I do not want a diesel in my life. I understand that people who need it, need it—but if you don't, you don't. I am definitely one of the "don'ts". If there is ever a time that changes, I will make sure that taking off the valve covers isn't part of injector replacement. Thanks Ray!

When the time comes to do your injectors, I'd suggest looking into the metal return line fittings. They tend to be somewhat difficult to get in, and are super easy to break. Personally, I like the return design of the LB7 and L5P… more robust connections.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @JRNelson78 says:

It may not be from injector. It`s not always from it. You must check for compression first. And if injectors are at -(minus) rates, they are OK! And that cylinder is OK too, because it needs to be "slowed down" for some reason. The problematic cylinders are those with positive numbers, because they must be "fastered up". One more thing, all the numbers in sum, must make 0, or super close to 0. So, my suggestion is to check that cylinder with 7 on it or all the "positive" cylinders, i saw 3 on another. Others are OK. Yes, the injector is still a suspect, but i`m just saying, that it`s not always from it.

DO you sniff your stick? You should. Most all vehicles these days use direct injection
meaning the injectors are under the valve cover. If the injector O ring was to fail, and
they do, ALL THE TIME, raw fuel will spray onto the valve springs, drain down into the
pan, mix with your oil, thin it and eventually will thin the oil to the point where it will
loose most of its lubricity and engine parts will fail. SO every time you check you
oil, sniff the oil on the stick for fuel. ALSO, sniff your transmission stick too sniffing
    for burnt ATF.

One addition to your explanation that is very important especially on the LB7s is that you need to be looking at the main fuel rate while checking balance rates. If main fuel rate is low then that can point to fuel injectors leaking past ball and seat. Fuel in the oil isvery common on the LB7s or hazing at idle.

Ray, your tangents teach many of quite a lot about late model vehicles. I personally don't mind taking those road trips with you.

I know diesel engines have their purpose, but I am glad I don't have one. I am happy with my vortecs.

Do I sense some Diesel Logic units incoming?

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @Bowhunters6go8xz6x says:

Ray, do you use any kind of injector cleaner on your truck on a regular basis, if not would adding some make a difference in readings after driving it?

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @tomblobasjamescarymccollum1740 says:

Nasty Nate along with Sesame Street was one of my kid's most frequently viewed televised broadcasts. Thank you Ray🎉

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @MarzNet256 says:

The injector balance is by done by increasing or decreasing pulse width to the injectors. The data could also be shown in ms not just cubic mm..

Ray, when you decide to retire from being an auto mechanic, you would be a great shop teacher at a local high school or community college. Thanks for all the great explanations.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @dereks.6783 says:

Sounds like Ray is coming home from the field trip with a set of Diesel Logic injectors for the DirtyMax. Hey, they'll definitely get an honest, thorough review if they're in your daily driver. Can't wait for the series. Best mechanic channel on You Tube.

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @peterkelly250 says:

Thanks for the information. Would the injector clean fluid improve this situation or is this all snake oil.

did i see a forgotten socket down in there ?

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @cengeb says:

And that concludes today's diesel tech lesson 1. What is next, i learned stuff, really interesting professor Ray. DIESEL forever, still after over 100 years, nothing beats a diesel for all it does. Diesel delivers EV's which is really funny

  53. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @cengeb says:

Who makes the injectors on this one? time for another trip?

Ray very interesting that you use "the diesel pot cast" clip in this video! He's covered some very interesting and informative topics, one of the best was with Vinny Himes (Leadfoot Diesel) in reference to shops working on modified trucks with the EPA monitoring so closely, but it was explained that if the mods are being done or repaired during whatever work is being done that there is harm, foul or penality for working on those vehicles. It's just recommended that you record and document that's how the vehicle arrived. Great job explaining the idle balance, needed an old musce car idling with a heavy cam to show that even on gas vehicles the idle being rough doesn't mean that the engine doesn't run well. The ole rough choppy sounds all out of wack idle of non computer engines.
    By the way no such critter as a VIN number;
VIN is the abbreviation for Vehicle Identification Number , so saying VIN number is saying , vehicle identification number number!!

I am laughing a bit…. I saw the fuel radiator for the pickup…. (to cool the fuel from being hot) … Currently its minus 6 F here in Idaho Falls Idaho…. We generally dont have to cool fuel…. We are just the opposite…. He heat it and add fuel additives to ensure flow and gelling….

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @imfloridano5448 says:

Ray yank those injectors out and take them with you to that factory walkthrough you have been invited to and have them recondition them.

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @alexandermckay8594 says:

Wow. That's going to cost you about $7k in parts alone for that upgrade!

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @imfloridano5448 says:

I've worked on military diesels in 5 tons, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, HMMWV'S, and others. But I have not grasped wat you are discussing here in this video until you broke it down. We didn't have scan tools to test for the vehicles problems. This lecture really helps me understand the many other functions of the scan tool which really helps with trouble shooting.

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @davejaelynefeetham4593 says:

Do we need to worry about similar problems with the injectors on gasoline engines. I know you can get fuel injection cleaning products but should they be replaced after a certain mileage?

Incorrect, DPF is on all diesels in 🇬🇧 UK and Europe🇪🇺 on EURO 6 engines, so after 2014, if tampered with or deleted major fines and in some cases jail I believe. I drive Semi trucks and diesel car, my car is 2010 focus so don’t have DPF.

DPF is the biggest pain, on a truck (semi, or as we call them HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicles)) the exhaust has 2 sensors that can cost up to £1700 to change

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @madhatter2012 says:

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @paulocarvalho6480 says:

This is how to explain to non mechanics how parts work and what they're designed for. Simple, concise explanation. When you get to do the work on your truck, please show us everything. Have yourself a great day Ray, Lauren and Dave.

  79. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @xsiveone says:

Did I miss the seat restoration video on your truck?

  80. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @abitoffcenter383 says:

Here's a suggestion for you Ray. If Diesel Logic really stands behind their products. They shouldn't have any problems with giving you a set on injectors to run and give a true evaluation of. Let the cards fall where they may. You know, put their money where their mouth is sort of thing.

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @not-a-raccoon says:

You always say that your channel is an entertainment channel vs a How To channel.. buuuuuut.. i personally find more value and gain more knowledge in the real world vlog format vs the sanitized, exited perfect world How To videos that jump cut to the finished project, skipping over the whole struggle to get there.
