The difference between the 1997 Econoline van and this 2004 model is striking. And what is striking is how poorly maintained this one is. The only time my ride looked that bad is when I was delivering newspapers for a living, and the wrapping and wires would accumulate in the back seat. If a service person came to my home/business in this rattletrap, I wouldn't let him/her in. The people with the '97 can were trying, but parts were short. (I also think their mechanic was screwing them, doing the least they could get by with.) These people don't even try. If I had a business van I depended on, it would never go below a quarter tank of gas. Like I said, I would be reluctant to do business with these people.

$800-$1000 for replacing an ECM, who can afford to fix the other issues

About a decade ago my Saturn sedan needed a new ECM because the mass airflow damper rusted shut, causing a over-voltage or over-current on the sensor or damper control that fed back into the ECM and killed it.
I was able to use a junkyard ECM, but it had to be data-reset at the dealership, as my mechanic did not have the ability to reset it.
Only now, watching part one of this series, did I learn that it was about the VIN being programmed in, not anything to do with the performance of the car.

I like the fact that they didn't bury ecm. Normally it is not promised how well it will work.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Martin Naylor says:

Should be law for workshops that the mechanics will not work on a filthy vehicle.
Why should a mechanic get the dreaded lurgie because of you. You have some courage getting into that vehicle. Suggest a hazmat suit and breathing apparatus in-future👍.
    You have a great day👍🇬🇷

if you had the ford diagnostic software and the VCM you could program the ECM without having to call the hotline

So Ray! Why do you say the injector was cause for the ECU driver failure?: When you said the injectors resistance checked out higher than normal.
Surely that would normally reduce the current going through the ECU driver? v/r=i right? So therefore the 12.2 volt supply and normal injector resistance 16ohm impedance i think? That would give 0.76 amps, if it was 18 ohms then 0.67 amps at the ecu. Well with in a standard mosfets 1 amp capacity.

So I don't get how the injector would be cause in the matter of the ecu failure?
Does Ford use a current controller prior to the driver mosfet in the ECU or something?

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars numberyellow says:

Whatever business they have, i wouldn't hire them, under any circumstances. You can tell a lot about the level of professionalism, and work ethic a company has, by the way they maintain their vehicle fleet.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steven Leach says:

"dupe-t-doos" Now, I am doing – "dupe-t-doos" every time my phone rings. I am doomed.

10 TO 1 THERE wasn't anything wrong with the first ecm it was changed out for nothing

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jerry says:

Ray, I'm sure the injector did not take out the ECU! As the injector resistance goes up the ECU driver current goes down therefore the ECU driver has a less demand on it. As a EE who worked on a team that developed the great grandparent of today's ECU (early 90's ). Back then, they were designed to last a million miles. That meant they could survive a harsh and extreme mistreatment environment. ECU driver shorts opens and electrostatic discharge protection were design into the system. I think a fault at manufacturing finally killed the ECU. We call it the Apollo 13 sindrome .

Now that coils and #7 injector are diagnosed bad, hopefully van owner will go to junkyard and get cheap replacement parts. That van is ancient and not worth pouring good money after bad.

I wonder if specialised ECU repair of Oakland park FL could fix that ECU – they do european mostly tho. I know a lot of Toyotas have leaky caps in them breaking the unit
