It's time to replace the rear wiper motor in the back of this customers '17 Buick Envision. Had to hold back the swearing a bit in this video but I managed. GM China was really proud of the clips holding this baby together let me tell ya!

We do a little Explorer with a plastic tool here. See if we can get in here somewhere you can get one clip to go. You're good to go here. Come on baby.
Got to be close. We can see. Okay, there's one clip right there. right next to a clip.
Let me get another tool here if we can get the if you can get the clips to go. Usually it's a piece of cake, but there we go. There's one. They're not a standard clip.
It looks like they use that same same metal Garbage they used on the front door. That's no fun. Let me hold this open. get my metal tool back out there, see if I can get one started on this side.
Perhaps there's a couple going. Get my finger stuck? Yeah, man, these are old school metal. Clips Uh, these things going to be a pisser. They're usually really Stout but they.
these are the kind that have a tendency to to stick and not want to come out of the door. There's one there. Go mother a pearl. Now let's keep working our way forward.
We're probably going to have to take off the upper and the lower trim as an assembly and then separate them. Is going to be my assumption. A they're Wick and tight. Give back my finger, come down over that latch.
Yeah, there's snug boy. It's got enough pressure up on it. They're going to want to go back in. There's one right there we can see them.
Usually we're good. Okay, there's another one way in here to leave that Pride open like that. see if we can reach in and get it? there is that was that one. That one's free.
Kind of keep moving across here. I Don't imagine that that is separate. Wow. this is really terrible.
That's the problem. I hear the ones over there clicking back in. There's so much pressure from the other ones pulling up on it. I might have to get some more plastic tools.
Keep them wedged in here. there's that one. I Know it sounds pretty terrible on camera. probably.
Ah gosh dang it, that's WWI in there. Boy oh boy. Now let me get some other plastic prying devices. Boy man, what a freaking crap.
Design This Wow so 90% of the time pulling trim panels on General Motors isn't too terrible this thing is Monster Trying to get these clips. Well that one fell out. What a freaking disaster. All right, those ones all stayed in.
this one fell out. Me: uh, get the one off the floor here. it dropped so that's what they are. They're that metal style clip.
Pop that in here. I'll just save I'll show you how these clip back in. but these things are a monster to get out in comparison to. like your regular standard plastic.
Clips See I mean you can see how hard they come out of the body. often times s these little metal Clips Will you know bend around. They'll get caught behind the metal and they're just a huge pain as you can see the clips here go in this way up here and then into the panel sideway so it makes them almost not quite impossible. but very difficult to remove.
And the way this thing's designed this upper panel, it's very difficult to. uh, just get it to release n that's one of my ready tools. I Hate doing it, but it's how you got to do it folks. we'll get it down. We'll separate the other part of that top. PA For assembly. These things are great. Okay, there's a bunch of them in the middle.
Wow, a freaking disaster. I'll get this unhooked here. the top half. Yeah, so this is you know they're all across here and this little guy.
and if you do have some that pop out and go flying, they've got a little alignment tab, line them up and stick them in. so piece of cake. but yeah yeah, what a monster getting these things out like I Say you can see how this one goes in this direction. Well, these go that direction so you know you tell me idiots.
Now we're going to have to get a long cying tool to try to get in the middle cuz there's some across here in the middle too. So we'll come in with a Long Dong here. Now we got it down a little bit. see if we can't reach way inside here.
There's one. Get some of these across the edge here. there's two. Boy, they come about halfway and they just stick.
Let's see. I'm not so sure I can reach that other one we might have to use like a real long pry bar or something. Let me see if I can get it inside. Oh yeah, there's one way way in the middle.
that piece of crap. General Motors from China Yes, there's those ones. They didn't want it falling off. I'll tell you that there's that one.
We got to be careful cuz there's the electrical connector here. we don't want it to just fall actually. I'm going to reach in I'm going to unhook the electrical connector from the button at least I thought I was there. Okay, so just in case this thing hits the floor.
Oh man, these suckers. what a bunch of a-holes There's two more by this latch right here, but they're not your standard. they're the actual really crappy metal ones. They have about a 0% chance of coming out.
uh, without breaking the freaking plastic. Wow. I knew these cars were crap, but I didn't realize they were this crappy. I'm going to try.
There may be some casualties here, folks. they're they're hidden up in here. Pretty good. Oh, got that one.
Look at me. Go! I'm going to see if I can see the other one from the other side. I'll show you what this looks like when we get it off. Come on freak hole.
No, this one's carrying the freaking plastic. It's wedged up in the body. mother effer stupid asses. So there's your electrical connector.
These are those two I was telling you about. but this this one started to tear away I start pulling the metal thing off. but yeah, these these style Clips are probably the worst in all of human history. They quit using them back in the ' 80s and '90s must be General M Found a need to bring them back.
Um yeah, so that's what things look like we're just coming to get after a lot of pissing and moaning going on here. Um, here's your connector to get it unhooked. There's just a little squeeze tab here. I Just squeeze that with my thumb. unplug it. But yeah, what a joke, huh? Freaking junk. Oh, it's got cavity wax in it. Look at that.
That can't be Factory There's no way they spent the extra money on that. Uh, use appropriate trim tool to release the lift gate lower trim finish panel into liftgate. Upper trim finish panel from the lift gate. inner panel is one assembly.
Uh, separate the upper and lower. That's all they tell you and then they show you the position of all the you know Clips on the inside. But what a Fring Mother Lover Those things are Huh? So here's the wiper arm. You can see it's lost.
Its spring has nothing to do with why the motor doesn't work, but see if I can get the trim cover to pop off here. just pulled off. so yeah, pull them off the bottom. They've got some little Loops in there.
It's got a a hook retainer here, so in on the arm, slide it down, click it on. I Bought a new one just in case we broke this one, but we didn't but the arm is seized up. I do have a new arm and I also have a new wiper blade so you can spend some time trying to get these freed up. They do have plastic bushing bushings in them.
They are aluminium. You get them freed up. It usually doesn't last very long. Well, I mean the new one doesn't last very long anyway.
So we're going to put new one on. Let's get this nut off here. 13 mil Zippy Zpp off I Doubt we're going to be able to just give it a little tug, but we are. There's what you get for having doubt.
Mr O I Don't know if this rubber is part through the windshield. It probably is, so we'll quit meddling with that. Let's lift the gate back open here. Oh look at that fancy I think book times 6 or8 80% of that's probably getting the panel off.
We'll unplug it. We'll grab our Ug Dua gun switch over to the 10 mil. Take that stuff off. take that one out.
Is there nut on the outside of the glass? Nope, there's not. Oh I Thought the shaft was going to be all seized up, but usually on. uh, not on these in particular. but rear wiper arms.
Usually it's all corroded but this little guy would barely move across the window then just kind of conk out. So there's that. We got a brand new one here. You can tell it's genuine.
General Motors Made in America Apple Pie baseball. You can tell that by the writing on it. Just kidding, it's not made in USA America I Only buy GM cuz I'm American Think again dude, there ain't nothing American about GM Let me look on the outside I Want to make sure that rubber's coming through here how it should be? Yes sir, it's coming through just nice there's that. Let me get a.
let's give it a handy here. There we go. There's that. we'll it in. We'll go turn it on, make sure it works. Looks like it's working. Oh where is our arm here? It is genuine. GM I Left the motor on intermittent.
Really got her package up. Quite nice here. we're going to take the wiper blade. was on a infinite back order never to be made again from General Motors So we got an aftermarket blade.
I Usually don't like aftermarket rear wiper blades, they rarely fit nice. but this was just a standard FR of the mill style. We got a new nut that holds this on cuz I Thought the old one would be degraded, but they sent me a quantity of five. I don't know if I paid for five or paid for one, but we're going to steal one out of here.
Cut the bag nicely, send the other ones back. they've already got blue Loctite installed. Park position is over here. We'll wait for it to cycle.
You got to work quick. Let cycle L back up see if we're close. Oh fancy, let's go up. just a just a whisker.
There we go. Whisker now. We got some liquid on there. Oh look at that wiping job it does.
She's a performer. What a performer. It didn't work and now it does. Like a like a charm works like a charm.
Springy Now to then to push a little harder. Okay, that's on. we're good. Let's spend the next 30 minutes putting the cover back on.
If I'm looking at it correctly, we can stick the lower half on now. I Went ahead and popped out our little handle there now that we can see it I Believe man I Don't want wrong cuz I don't want to pull this thing off twice. That would really stink I believe that we can, uh, put this on safely and then stick the upper half on I Want to get these two clips here in first okay and then get a couple of these other ones. They go on way easier than they come out, so we're just going to leave that kind of lightly.
I Haven't gone through and whacked in the middle yet. This should be able to click on in that fashion. So it's got the little donger here. We've gone ahead put all the other Clips in it.
any of them that have falling out, that one goes that way. Remember, have to give this one a little assistance pushing that clip up all the way cuz you got to kind of squeeze it in the heck was that? oh little piece of a metal clip here is all rusty. It's the metal clip on the end of the openers. Half of it fell off cuz it's all rotted.
Make sure we got them on we did so you can see how easy they go on. and if you're the guy in the assembly line, that's your job to stick that on. I Mean you could probably do 7,000 a day is. and I would think that would be more important from a manfacturing standpoint then it would be serviceability.
You know, a long term. I Don't think manufacturers often care much about that. It's just how fast can we build them, how cheap can we build them, and how many can we make in a day? I Believe that's manufacturing 101 there. that's in there now. this little guy. In case you're wondering, you've got one of the infamous metal Clips there. Of course your connector goes in this way, so these are your permanent tabs so it's going to go in and then click in like that. so if you're up here trying to pry out.
I Did have a little bit of a spell getting the little metal clip out there, but I did it. You know once the gate was removed, clipped in, there's that torque down factory specs? Okay, there's that. Oh, that's it. We get some stuff WIP our might prints off it.
un enhance. That's that's it, folks. wiper, motor, arm cover Blade The whole deal it drew blood. We're not super happy about that, but that's okay.
We've shed lots of blood for cars and uh, but yeah, those, uh, those metal. Clips In case you didn't get the gist, those things just piss me off, man. I Hate seeing those clips cuz we haven't seen them in like 20 years and now they're back. All of a sudden awful and the power just went out.
And that's awful too because Josh has a car in the lift so maybe we'll get to go home early. No guess not. Lights are back on. that's handy.
Anyways, folks, if your PO is not out, why don't you go in. That comment section questions Comments concerns the insty the Facebook you know where to find us and just remember viewers. If I can do it, you can do it. Thanks for watching.
Hey the power just went out. Did you notice? Yeah. Oh okay. We're just making sure you're okay.
Yeah, making sure I'm okay. Okay, you didn't come check to see if we were okay I can hear you out there screaming # Survivor.
Erics got "That Great GM Feeling…by using genuine SAIC-GM parts!"
And… the sad part is that the flat rate on removing that rear inside trim panel is probably .1 hours or 6 minutes.
😜
GM goes from 1 extreme to the next. Oftentimes they don't use enough clips ( of any sort) and then they design something like this…Eric did a good job not breaking things!
Dont often see visible frustration here. It took some mother #$@$+ son of a @#$&#$ god #+$@ GM bull$&@# f#@&$# clips!
GM isn't America and Apple pie, more like Chinese takeout.
“During a recent inventory auditors discovered a forgotten stockpile of 3 million obsolete clips. For the sake of GM Sstock value on Wall Street a decision was made to use up the clips as part of a cost reduction program. Hence, that ain’t a bug, that’s a feature!…” 🤣
If this car is the same one with all the air bag sensors bad it must be a piece of junk! Good video..
Power here in the lovely NB is out along with 20,000 others. What fun.
GM American made 😂🤣😂
In my 40 years in the business, if it draws blood, 10% up charge! LOL!
Nice job! Most of the effort is in just getting the plastic removed to get access to the motor. On the car I bought last summer the rear wiper is hidden up under the rear spoiler at the top of the window. It should help slow down the corrosion BUT it will probably be much worse to replace. I imagine that to get the blade removed you would have to remove the rear spoiler as well as the plastic trim from the inside.
👍👍
Oh the days gone by with screws to panels.
Quality plastic:
There's an oxymoron if I ever heard one!
😂
They went through alot of those fasteners to clip that cheap piece of junk plastic in place.
I have a back-up, natural gas, electric generator. My computer is hooked to an Uninterruptible Power Supply, which is a large lead-acid battery, and prevents the computer from shutting down. The generator company fires it up every Saturday, warms it to running temp, and checks the output. I have had continuous power for years now. It is lovely.
Im starting to think this Buick Envision is your personal project car. LS1 in the future?
So a simple access panel would make this a ten minute job with one hand behind your back and one eye closed 😂😂😂
Is it really that big of a concern about seeing a few well placed and colored screws?
Upholstery clips and trim clips are evidence that Auto manufacturers are equal opportunity employers. Rainbow engineers love that stuff.
Seeing how these one-way clips make service a real mess, I was shocked to see holes in the frame of my Tacoma alighning with the A/C compressor bolts so it can easily be unbolted from the fenderwell. What a difference!
Omg, why didn’t they just use screws to attach those panels.
I would have gone wrench throwing mad. Mrs. O would have had to medicate me… lol
the shoulder shrug cplained it all.🙂
Last year, I was at a buick dealership getting my 21 enclave serviced (made in Michigan). I was considering an Envision for my wife. The dealership website showed to have one in stock, but it wasn't there. The sales rep tracked the vehicle. The tracking showed the vehicle leaving China, going through the Panama Canal up to Charleston SC. From there, loaded on a truck for delivery.
I looked at the sales rep and politely said No Thank You.
What a pain in the ass!.
Designed to be bloody annoying.
Friend asked me to install new seat belt for a rear seat on a 2009 Accord. I looked at it and it appears I need to disassemble the entire interior of the car to get to it. Not looking forward to it.
Buick built with chinesuim 💩engineering
Perhaps a trip to Wilberts and get a new hatch 😂
ByuuICK😂
Only thing made in America is Taxes and Tyrants! 😮❤👍🏻
Is there anything better than a cup of coffee and a video from Mr O. In the morning?
Great video, keep up the good work.
The power ⚡️is on here to leave you a comment.
I feel your pain and frustration.
At GM china, customer service is job # 0
So it seems that changing the whole hatch out would be easier than getting the trim off.
😮geezuz,,could you imagine doing all this, and putting trim back on ,only to realize you forgot to plug in connector 😂😊🎉😂❤
It would of been easier to of cut a hole in the boot door from the outside replaced the motor replace the metal bit of filler and paint job done 😅
I have asked a few auto workers if they knew how to work on the vehicles they have assembled every one said no. I was kinda shocked but how they explained it. It made sense they only put one piece on and not told what it does for the most part. Your videos are the best.
Jeezzz thought I was going to have to put down a pig mat to catch all the tears coming from this video
Blood sweat and tears!!!!!
This is more nerve wracking than watching you dive into the guts of an engine. Thanks for posting. Steve
Years ago I read about the battles between dealership associations and manufacturers over the issue of serviceability, and it wasn't the way I thought it was. Dealers were getting upset that many of the manufacturing decisions that were being made were making it too easy to repair things. That's a problem for dealers, because dealers make much more money from service after the sale than they do from the sale itself. That's why dealer service areas are often fancier often than the sales floor, offering luxury waiting rooms with coffee bars, etc. But, if you can pop a new rear wiper motor in zippy-zappy, you can't bill as much as if you have to do a bunch of surgery to get to it. Also, if you make it too easy, the DIY guys are more likely to fix it themselves, and all of this is lost dealer profit. On the other hand, dealers make nothing after their costs for warranty repairs, so dealers wanted typical warranty items to be really easy to fix. So basically there is a constant war going on between the dealers' bean counters, the manufacturers' bean counters, and the engineers, all with competing needs and motives. The article I read suggested that there were major players among the dealers who make side deals with manufacturers over this sort of stuff, resulting in some things that are designed to take a while to repair so owners won't want to do the job themselves and dealers can charge a lot of money for, such as heater cores, HVAC vent motors, evap systems. There was a time when only dealers were able to deal with tire pressure monitor systems, and I imagine that made them a ton of money.
I've always been concerned of breaking plastics in the cold or cooler Temps, but Eric here went for it seemingly without concern for that. Great video great content first time I ve seen Eric get mad, lol
Gloves, aka bitch mittens. Almost necessary popping panels unless you wanna cut yo shit up
If you don't draw blood you did it wrong. Lol
Commenters: New cars are junk they’re all made of plastic
Same commenters: Why the $@&! did they use metal??
"I'm not a body guy". That's funny. Nice horror video. 😊
if it simply had about 6 or 8 screws you would already have it off
You have to go through all of that trouble to also change some of the non LED bulbs… What a joke!
Best mechanic in the east/for sure one of THE best of the best anywhere. Love ya Eric O !! I would haved loved to seen you do the right thing and spray a quick shot of glass cleaner on the window and giving her a wipe before instakllng new wiper. GM and those clips,,,,,,,,deep state!
Ah yes….the big 2.0
I usually put some petroleum jelly on clips when I put them back together just in case I need them off again. I'm surprised the wiper arm came off..I had to cut mine off..copper grease time.
Remember the Buick Rendezvous? (The good looking cousin of the Pontiac Ass Tick) There was a recall on them to install a stiffening plate inside the tailgate. I think it was to help prevent the tailgate from flexing and popping open or some bullshit like that. You had to drill several holes and rivet it in place. I think the job paid .3 The panel was 1 piece, and had the metal clips that attached directly to tabs on the panel Needless to say, a lot of them got replaced to the point that they were on backorder for a while.
Eric, in this case “if I can do it”, I’ll let you do it rather than me.
Insane. GM from China. 🙄
Taking that piece off a 2021 Tahoe, pulled on one corner and whole thing fell down on my head…🤷♂️
No spec on the wiper pressure on the glass? On the airliners we used a fish scale to check wiper pressure so they don’t lift off the window at 200+ mph!
We took my wife's car to O'Reilly's to get a new wiper on the back and 5 guys go outside to do it, then the manager comes running out and says stop! He says we don't change these out because the back window could break. So he says go to this place down the road and they will change it. We drive down to this place but they were closed. Drove home and I got out a small screwdriver and changed it. No big deal. I took off the back my wife's equinox plastic and it was a pain in the butt, too!
Those plastic pieces are giving me an anxiety attack 😂😂
A guy just wants to get a big tire spoon and go to town.
Pro tip: A giant metal hole saw from the other side can make wiper motor replacement a breeze… 😂
When Harbor junk has sales, I bought 10 of the cheap thin door stops. They work well for wedging that stuff open and keeping them from snapping back in.
Watching you work on GM products just reinforces the decision I made nearly 40 years ago to never, ever, ever buy another GM product again in my lifetime. So far, so good.
Hey…. Where do you get that white windshield lubricant??
(used to live in Buffalo). 😂😂😂
Ugh, plastic, no matter how careful I am, when those are like 8 years old, the plastic is going to break taking that apart.
"Mother Effort!" The restraint here is your largest skill on this repair😂
I'm surprised that the PRNY hasn't made you buy a $20,000 back up generator.
The quality of auto parts has gone to garbage. I remember back in the day when parts would last longer than the vehicle. Today it’s more about profits than quality.
It's a Houdini mechanical fastener that doesn't need Loctite… A recall on anything behind a panel with these clips would explode a bean counters computer! The return to supplier label must have fell off the crate in the parts warehouse!
That's the struggle we enjoy.
This is the first time I recall hearing music in a video.
The thing I hate most as a DIYer is the rip off prices charged by stealerships for replacement parts that are bought through them.
Man…the frustration you were experiencing pulling those clips off.
Serenity Now.
LOL…I wonder if this was billed as "Flat Rate"?
this is 6 days old or a year and six days keep up the good work mr O THANKS FOR THE VIDS REALLY ENJOY THEM
The only thing American about GM are the bailouts.
That is truly stupid. Worse than birthing a cow!
Another new tool that I never knew existed but now desperately need 😮
Buick Envision is manufactured in China, so no surprise. We bail GM out and they have their garbage made in China. Should be a law against it.
Car would be better built by the Daewoos rather than the CCP ChiComs. Shame on GM. They probably take orders for it on TikTok.
Let's be honest, it's not just GM. How many things are built in the US with all USA sourced components? Not much. We did this to ourselves when we decided we weren't willing to pay 2-5 times more for USA made stuff vs. offshore. Especially true for young people today. Most don't care about where stuff is made, or the fact that we are financing countries that hate the USA.
Yep! I hate the Jesus clips
Sometimes a Youtube vid like this is way better than any other resource on how to get these things apart. I wonder if one day soon, the trim will be considered "one-time use".
Great vid, but the ad-libbing when the power tripped at the end was a class act by Eric 😉
My old 2014 Chrysler Town & Country had those metal clips, I only had to deal with them once thankfully. The Pentatick engine failed before I had to replace any more interior parts.
The engineer of the metal GM trim clips was either an A.) disgruntled employee trying to stick it to the man or B.) a mouth breather apprentice
I was on the edge of my seat prying with you lol
All this work for one of the most useless features! (sorry). I’ve driven an SUV for 20 years and turned my rear wiper on 4 or 5 times by accident, and maybe once on purpose. Wash your car and use side mirrors! (Not to mention it looks stupid with a rear wiper swishing dirt back and forth, or running continuously in rain for no discernible advantage. And no I don’t have an equally unnecessary backup camera.) (/rant)
When I saw this video pop up I’d never have imagined half of it would be removing the stupid trim panel 😂
I hate trim clips with a vengeance. For the trunk lid which is hidden 99% of the time I'd much prefer it was attached with e.g. recessed torx head screws.
half the video was removing one piece of plastic lol
Spent more video time just getting in the panel to work then installing the new parts and adjusting the wiper. I can't disagree with you about those clips. All about assembly speed and no thought about future servicing.
Let me ask you Mr O. A job which should of taken you 20-30 min now takes you 30 min just to remove a panel. Does that job pay more in service data or is it the same because of a retar… engineer.
had to repair the washer nozzle on the hatch of my 05 crv, took less than 2 minutes to have the broken part in my hand, no tools to get the plastics off, small pic to get the nozzle out. This crv still has not squeaks or rattles.
What Eric does here is help the diy guy to NOT destroy an expensive piece of plastic while at the same time, justifies the existence of the honest, family driven business. (not to mention the time saved by not searching for tools thrown in frustration)
Eric, I'm going to bring my Buick Envision, I E, "pos" for you to replace the rear wiper motor. I'm only 16 hours west of the PNY, it'll be a road trip, lol.
plastic trim should just have a few small bolts instead of fragile clips, everything would be far easier.
Shouldn’t this be titled – “Swearing at Buicks” ?
Chinese engineering at its finest
Why people buy GM products?
The struggle is real.
