Come along with Eric O at the SMA shop as he diagnoses and repairs this 2008 Chevy Malibu that has an engine light on with a P0463 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Voltage code and the customer also stated that the gas gauge does not work.

American car engineers suck at designing fuel pump replacements, Foriegn manufacturers have designed the system for easy replacement by installing an easy access cover on the floor of the car, usually under the passenger seat, or the trunk area, just remove the cover, disconnect the fuel lines, and wire harness, and remove, and install the pump from inside the car, it can be done in less than an hour, easy peasy.

Had the same P0463 code and a fuel gauge that read full or empty. It was the MAP sensor !!! just fyi….

It's not cheap and easy, hopefully those who watched see what a technician has to go through. Any small mistake, or plastic, or chincy wire end issue can mean you have to do it all over if you don't check it at each step. The fumes, the fuel, the dirt, etc.
It can be difficult to do at home and or alone.
Is it worth the money you save if you're a home do it yourselfer?
    Some would say yes.
Many would ask why there's no access plate in the cars floor.
It would have to be huge, and then there's fumes possibly, and fire danger. So GM doesn't do it that way.
Some of their cars, Delphi doesn't even sell separate parts and they call the whole thing a "module" so I read. Hopefully it's not on all models.
That was a lesson in patience, Eric O.
Recommend filter replacements to help the life of the pump if they're still external.
That helps them not labor while managing "sulfur content of fuel"
So, that's a factor in some states that gets pretty bad for needing replacement of the pumps on that kind of vehicle.
You probably know this, but I spent time researching for some GM repairs. Felt like offering what I learned
    Thanks for a good video.

Runs ok, but fuel gauge Just started acting crazy, again, after about 150-200 miles. Noticed it after a Hard Left turn ??? It reads either Full or Empty, PO 463 ??? Anyway, Thanks again.Guess I'll be crawlin under it.Seems like these old Chevys' are Haunted !!! Gonna start with checkin wires, if you got a better idea, would appreciate it any advice. the hose in the groove sound good, bit could this be a factory thing or this could be the second pump?

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dean Kay says:

A batch of high sulphur fuel will cause the silver plated contacts to turn into silver sulfate causing high resistance. There is a TSB on that one. They changed the metal alloy to a gold contact alloy if I remember right.
But is it always full when they go bad including pump. Just inspect inside of the pumps bucket to look for debris.
It requires the tanks flushed with super hot water and dried with a towel. I hate gas running down into your are pit. That is fun…and irritating!

I’m dealing with this exact same problem. As great as these drivetrains are, these Malibu’s share some weird and expensive problems. My power steering assist is defective too which was fixed once from a recall.

Where's your helper Josh when you need him , leave Mrs. O alone she shouldn't be helping you remove a gas tank , that's why you have paid help @ your shop .

Haven't you ever heard of a vacuum cleaner for the next time cleaning up all that dirt and dried up mud & salt on and around that gas tank .

We still love watching your videos the cracks us up how you moan and complain especially about removing that fuel pump with that hose connection that was the best part .

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jay L says:

I got a 06 Malibu 2.2L doing the same thing. I called a place for a quote and they said $250 so I’m thinking I’ll do it myself

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Smith says:

After you spray off all the dust it wouldn't hurt to take a spray bottle with some mineral oil or other lightweight oil and spray around the area of your about to open this will make any other loose materials stick to the surface. That way you won't be replacing the fuel pump next week because of a clogged filter. Because this wonderful design they have now the fuel pump in the tank the fuel cools the pump if the filter gets clogged the pump burns up. Yay so $0.25 filter will take out a $300 pump what a design what a design

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Smith says:

Let me see bailing wire and muffler something seems to be familiar about that. 1967 and a 1958 Chevy Bel Air oh yeah it's all coming back now. To be 16 years old again but the am radio worked really good LOL

That’s an awful lot of work just to add a sensor! I say let it be as long as it doesn’t hinder emissions testing

That dirty dusty fuel tank I would take it outside and blow it off with a hose before I remove the fuel pump.

My MIL has a 03 or 05 Malibu and while it does AMAZING on gas…$14 to fill up from E-F for a 5 hour drive 1 way and still had a little less then half a tank left and guess what? The fuel gage didn't work so had to keep up with it by how miles left on the tank when it was reset after filling up…still amazing on gas! Weirdly engineered car otherwise lol.
