Motor Repair
Ray, have you ever considered using walnut shell blasting with a vacuum hose attached for medium removal like they use on Toyotas and Mercedes Benz vehicles?. Worth looking into it. Cheers You channel is AWESOME!
Dropped in with no gas 🙂 gotta love it.
I am surprised that a 5 year old engine needs such work, including the replacement of the manifold. After watching you and Wes and Eric O, I wonder what vehicles have the least high maintenance requirements. Thus far, my 08 E150 Ford van and my 15 Jeep Renegade have not required much work except for a fried starter on the Jeep 3 years back. I enjoy all your videos. Be safe.
As an aspiring mechanic that feels like he found his perfect job type I can ensure you that this is not boring at all. I have seen a lot of your videos now and I'm ahead in class and I feel like I can thank you for a big part of that. Than you for your videos!
Hey Ray try this trick out grab a paper towel and shove it in a socket with a bolt then tear the paper towel and the bolt should stay in the socket give it a try
This one time at band clamp…
Love the videos, sort of stuck on an issue iam working on a 05 mustang v6 the current problem is that the car shifts are rough and the overdrive button flashes thought you could help thanks have a blessed day
Great work Ray
Lots of Techron……….. Hyundai is pronounced Hunday. Just so you know.
No did not click off, why did the carbon build up so much on this car?
If we had more thorough and honest mechanics like you there would be no concern if the customer is being scammed or taken advantage of.
Electronic intake runners are a pain But hey they give us more work to feed our family's right @Rainman Ray's Repairs
Engine GDI need catch can
Yep avoid opening Cooling system is always a must there is always a mess or loss of coolant somewhere most likely on US is were the coolant goes lol @Rainman Ray's Repairs
Lucky it was not one of the catch on fire models .LOL
I want to open that plenum up to see what went wrong in there.
How much do the battery powered ratchets cost ? I've been thinking about getting some. I've just started working on cars again after recovering from a recent surgery
Thought they came with a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty?
Sorry to tell you the bad news, but you will DEFINITELY get this car back in the future. It will have the ' famous ' Hyundai/Kia Theta Engine bottom end knock which will require a new short block or remanufactured engine !!! That is if it doesn't catch on fire first !!! 😆😆😁 TOTAL PIECE OF 💩
200000 miles on my GDI Accent, seafoam in the intake every 10k keeps this problem away.
I love/hate direct injection 💉 for this reason!
So you have to remove the intake manifold to replace the starter on that thing? Correct me if I'm wrong please, but that just dont make any sense.
Doo Dee Dooooo 🎶🎶🎵🎵
With all the carbon build-up, the throttle body looked very clean.
Ray why is it that a GDI engine fouls the intake valves , but a diesel engine does not????????????
LOL….you're gonna have to replace the engine now that it has the ability to generate enough power to blow itself up.
In all seriousness, didn't seem like an overly complicated repair, which I'm sure you appreciated. On to the next one!
Great job bud
How could this have been prevented?
What piece crap 2017 2 .4 sonata Omg my 2010 Sonata burn rubber off front tires on take off goes s to show you 2017 is (Junk.).
How can anyone forget that steering wheel!
Nothing quite like the satisfaction when you step on the accelerator and find that it actually goes. Score one for the good guys.
Thanks again Ray. The tank out of gas reminds me when I fix printers that are out of paper and when I ask for additional paper, I am given 5 sheets. What is wrong with some people?
The question is why would a 5 year old car have that much carbon buildup? 🤔
I own a Hyundai Santa Fe, 231000 miles, and have had no problems with it except, plugs, coils, fuel level sender, fuel pump later, brakes all the way around and back, alternader , and until I learned from you an emission code, I then took your advice and quit over the filling tank, and nada light. Thanks again Ray for an entertaining informative video, looking forward to more.
This dude is blessed with socket gravity, I swear every time I drop something it’s unreachable without having to remove something that’s completely unrelated to the job.
enjoyed the video Ray, wish you would have shown how you were testing that knock sensor. I think you should make another section to your channel where you show off more of your diagnostic methods and techniques.
Another great video!! Ray, Is this a common problem with this particular engine? Or , is it just using poor quality fuel to blame? I have never seen an engine with that much carbon buildup inside an intake manifold or cylinder head. So, in your opinion, what could cause carbon to build to this level?
did a carbon clean on my A4 2.0 with cleaner and wire brushes and picks, wish i would of got the walnut blast kit, gets so much better results, great videos .!!
Good video, nasty looking steering wheel 😆
Think I will stick with Hondas and Toyotas. I am allergic to Hyundai and Kia! Great video by the way:P People think they are saving money buying Kia and Hyundai, but by the time everything is said in done they spent more long term than they would have had they baught a Honda or Toyota. They might be a little higher, but in the long run you have less headache and spend less in the long term.
The carbon build up for a 2017 car makes me think the injectors are spraying too rich, wonder if hyundai provides a recall/free repair via some engine and fuel remapping
Oh wow. That’s the nasty car with layers of dirt. Crazy
Hey Ray, there was this one time, at “band clamp” ….. 😂🔧🔨
This is why I ditched my Sonata for a port injected Corolla with no trace of GDI
Those cars are little liberal s*** buggies
I didn’t realize H.G. W𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 was involved in your repair business.
I had to clean my 08 Mini do to excessive carbon but Mini recommends Walnut blasting. Since it's like a $2000 dollar service charge I bought the media and a blaster from Harbor Freight and did it myself for a couple hundred. Was easy.
I believe the knock sensor is a recall or reprogram
I have a 2017 Hyundai Sonata with over 130k miles. The only problems I had so far was the electric steering kept locking up and the trunk latch would latch.
I just figured it out, I know you are based out of Florida as you have stated that before, but I know the exact roads you are driving on, you are a local to me (I have lived in the area my whole life). Might stop by and have you do a Post Purchase Inspection on a vehicle I am thinking of buying. No its not from a buy here pay here, its from a traditional stealership that I am in heavy negotiations with.
I put 2 engines in kias this week 🤦♂️
On the intake runner control if the electric solenoid coil functions and the vacuum valve receives and sends vacuum where it supposed to, i found that using an intake valve cleaner sprayed into a vacuum hose Upstream of the intake manifold per the cleaners instruction can free up the butterfly. I am in Phoenix and the plastic was not warped rather it had carbon on it. I used CRC intake valve cleaner for GDI engines and saved the $500 part and the additional $500 of labor and it has worked for eight months now.
I had a Chevy Lemona that had the same symptoms and the catalyzer was clogged.
What a crappy design 😢
What idiot customer brings in a car with a fuel tank that’s bone dry.
Eric for pres Ray Vp
The CRC intake valve cleaner is fantastic. Flood the ports. Let it sit for 30-60min. The carob melts off or is brushed off. I love this cleaner.
That's what happens when you never "feed her the onions!", as Derek, at vicegrip garage, would say.
Ray could u do a top engine clean like snap on use to sale to clean the butterfly s do u think that might start it back to working
Ew, people need to clean their vehicles more often. I also believe that all automakers, if they're going to use GDI, use multi-port injection with it also. I know Toyota does, so carbon won't build up on the valves.
God! Clean that damn steering wheel! I wouldn't even drive that damn thing.
Hey Ray, what's the best/most reliable Hyundai engine since 2015?
I remember this car!
Who could forget that steering wheel, UGH! 😂😂
I use the dremel with scotch buff wheels and throttle body cleaner
Ray- when you get to 70 you’ll understand boreing- great video for a Boreing 70 year old/ thanks
You got it, Hyundai rhymes with Sunday!
Was the intake not worth cleaning? Or did I miss something?
Looks like job for Seafoam. I've used a couple of bottles on a used N54 BMW (DI twin turbo) that I bought and it completely cleaned up all carbon from the intake valves, so I now use it every 15,000 miles on all my vehicles to keep them clean and running well – without ever touching my socket set. I Can't recommend this product enough.
Was I the only one yelling "Ray the starter…." No?
I'm glad he took the time to clean the carbon deposits (I have to do it in my 220K mile Sonata). I wish he would have checked operation of the pcv valve, it's a cheap part that usually needs to be replaced.
Just curious. But have you ever forgot to something during the put back together? There is always so much to put back.
i feel like every hyundai i see has the low gas light on.
Don't loose that ….oops did make me laugh but you kept hold another great vid cheers Ray. And you got the yellow marks to match up to great install
SONATA GOOD CAR! 😂😂
This would have been the perfect candidate for a walnut blast, or Seafoam soaking at the very minimum
Wow! Nice editing! What you do is NOT BORING WE WANT ALL YOUR SO-CALLED BORING CONTENT!
Perfect first car for your high school kid.
using music with a good tempo in the fast forward bits was a nice. too many videos by others use head banging distorted crap that's annoying
bugs me there was a small hose clamp not clamped on the air intake hose by the airbox
but i always enjoy your videos nice work.
How annoying is it when the car is dropped off with no gas?
I've noticed that many steering wheels of your incoming cars are super nasty looking. I don't work on cars, but I've not seen groaty steering wheels on any cars I've been in or driven here in the Frozen North (Chicago) I've seen some very high mileage rides up here – 1987 Camry with 250k for example – the old cars are clapped out but the steering wheels don't look like those I see in your videos. What causes this Southern steering wheel rot syndrome? Is it from an accumulation of coconut-smelling sunblock that gets smeared on the wheel from Floridian hands?
Thanks for the video, always enjoy watching!
Why would you take your car in for service with the low fuel light on? I’ll bet with all that carbon they buy the very cheapest gas they can every tome they buy their $5.00 worth.
I’m curious. Hyundai has a 10y, 100k drivetrain warranty. And if you get the update on the engine recall for the knock sensor, it increases to lifetime. So why isn’t the knock sensor and intake issue covered under warranty?
Another great troubleshooting episode.
Keep up the great work 👍
I saw the cleaning of the valves, but what was the reason to replace the intake manifold? We had a Hyundai GDI engine go out on us while on the freeway… could feel it failing fast (rod knock), and it was covered under a recall. But wonder about the GDI's on this engine…. is it a common issue?
Aren't EGR's wonderfull? 👎
Must a direct injection only motor. I like ones that have manifold injection also. Mine has both. Keeps them valves clean.
I bet there was a knock sensor range performance DTC. That will set the flashing check engine light and the misfire codes. replacing the intake and vcm is only going to prolong the inevitable. there is a software update that goes along with the knock sensor, but odds are its going to need an engine sooner than later because the rod bearings are smoked. just some friendly advice.
Gross car, inside and out.
I stayed the whole video 👏🏾👍🏾🙋🏾♂️ smoking my blunt.. ☺️.
Now Past 35 mph…avoid school zones. √great work done.
forgot that pcv hose clamp xP
Thank you very very much to all automotive engineers out there, 'cause every mechanic enjoys going through all that plumbing and connector stuff just to get a car with an attitude afterwards. You guys really make our freaking days shinier.
Everything is unservicable these days. Mechanics are becoming parts fitters.
Like watching paint dry…….zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I think those intake port should be walnut blasted.
I believe you’re one of the most devoted YouTubers I’ve seen. I know making and editing videos to upload daily isn’t a simple task. God bless Bro
Love how customers drop cars off on empty lol
Wow you paid a hefty shipping on that cast iron part. Bit off topic…does the magnet tool share the same tool drawer with "The Claw"?
