Very interesting. I always wondered how an A/C compressor worked. Thanks Ray!

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Carr says:

do you have a link for those snap ring plieres?

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars hsvenforcer says:

Dont you mean REEEEEEEEEEEEEbuild kit? Those half ball bearings…..check balls to stop back flow?

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Servedio says:

Interesting, never saw the inside of a compressor before.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Odd Obi says:

A part of me was hoping you were going to hit all that with break clean just to make it shiny.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John says:

Love stuff like this where you can see what caused a component to fail rather than just saying "it failed"

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ronnie Maeker says:

    "Just add freon…"
    "No…don't add any oil…it's fine…"

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cool Breeze Outdoors WV says:

Now put it back together and make it work. lol

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Abel Kraaij says:

Couldnt it be from a privious compressor?

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jean Meslier says:

I bought my last (as in never again) Ford in 1980. I had a 1980 T-bird with a piston (single piston, I think) type compressor. These compressors were like what you see on older air compressors. It hammered. Sounded like a rod was about to go. Service manager told me that October would fix it. Ford had no fix and no concern.
We used to change the clutch or clutch bearings, even on these small rotary compressors.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Hylton says:

    That was fun Thx~!

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 916commons says:

Lol. You have a Viper engine in there Ray

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ben Budd says:

Well the black is a mix of the oil and aluminum dust that is Nasty in its own

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bruce Storey says:

    No brake clean?

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Corn Digger says:

Thank you Ray….. I've never seen the inside of one of those either. Interesting 🤔

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Grosser says:

It's a long time since I enjoyed a video as much as this one. I have spent most of my life fixing things and it is so relaxing to watch someone professionally destroying something. I love how you talk to stuff and tell it "you will come off" .I have done that for many years and thought that I was the only crazy one. There is something very therapeutic about wrecking something. Thanks a million Ray. Cheers from Australia, Robert.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dartfreak75 says:

Its fun taking stuff apart when you know that you don't have to put it back together

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Philip Ershler says:

Oh, come on now. Tell the front counter you need a compressor rebuild kit with over sized pistons. Send the cylinder body to the machine shop and have the cylinders bored out and honed. Then put the hole thing back together and put it in your next job as a rebuilt compressor with a minus 30 day warranty!

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars The Quick Brown Fox says:

And now I am off to watch a Pakistani guy rebuild a compressor for a Ford F-150 while sitting in the dirt with tools from 1922.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jon Sonnenschein says:

I never knew how one of those compressors was designed. Cool.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars pete d says:

Great example of why replacing only the compressor Clutch is seldom cost effective.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sarah Hernandez says:

Wow good to see that done cheers Ray 🍻

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Buffalo Merkis says:

Looks like the worn away material has ground to extreme fine dust and mixed with the oil in the system. Grey/black nasty stuff.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tony Strollo says:

Ray, now that I watched all your videos on this Ford truck, and been a Refrigeration mechanic for 47 years, I have a better picture of what's going on. You said the ECM shows a shorted temperature sensor, What really caused the very low air temperature is The AC system has a pressure switch that cycles the compressor. The pressure control cuts the compressor off at 27 to 29 PSIG and cuts back in at about 35 to 37 PSIG This will give you a evaporation temperature of 34 degrees and a 10 degree split you should have air temperature of 45 degrees. As far as the black specks in the compressor, The compressor failed because of liquid flood back, because of the failed pressure control, there was raw liquid flooding the compressor and causing oil wash off, and the reed valves, and the cylinder walls lacked oil, and the raw liquid causing wear on the tops of the pistons and cylinder walls. Also moisture i the system, causing a acid to form ( Moisture, heat, and oil will form hydrochloric acid. I have a feeling that truck will be back, if so, look for the pressure control and replace that, that will solve the problem. Good luck, and that was great job you did.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dan's Learning Curve says:

Did the same thing to the compressor off of my '00 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Clutch coil suddenly designed to demand too many amps. Looked into just replacing the clutch, but it either wasn't available or too much. Used compressor for the save. Mind you, this was after replacing the evaporator, an O-ring on the high side on the compressor, and, the high side hose off of the compressor. Now, I have a beater with a heater and AC!
Took a perfectly good compressor apart just to see how it was made. No video. However, I do have a few interesting ones on my channel.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mirko1891 says:

afaik they call it a "tumble plate" … at least that's what my translation would be from the part doing very much the same on a helicopter's rotor 😀

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sullidave says:

I'm now amazed that so many ac compressors continue to work on old cars. Seems like there are a lot of possible points of failure.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Kemp says:

Ray, you answered your question. The black goo is aluminum particles. (black death) From piston and cylinder wear.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Vose says:

Looks like the FS-10 on my 1986 F350 using a 1996 AC system. Ford went from the two cylinder Tecumseh or York to an FS-6 that looked like a mini GM A-6 and finally to an FS-10. At least it wasn't a scroll compressor. My 1994 Taurus wore out an FS-6 and it locked up on me.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jay Wolf Elite Ammunition says:

What is the country of origin of the compressor ?

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars trailjunkey says:

Love your videos keep up the good work!

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Macluvin65 says:

Now clean, rebuild and put it back together houdini. I'll wait.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars arska638 says:

Where is all the compressor oil? Just a tiny amount of oil with metal filing junk dumped in it. No wonder it went bad…

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ford Senior Master 1968 says:

The correct term is "Swash Plate", not helical crankshaft thing.
Most A/C compressors for the past 45+ years have been of a "Swash Plate" design.
    Patrick (Ford Senior Master Technician)

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phillip Polk says:

    it's called a "Swash Plate"

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phillip Polk says:

next time watch a video of someone who knows how to remove the hub and then properly remove the pulley and bearing assembly, there is no reason to show how little you know all in one video !

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Bullen says:

My favorite part: even the smallest hesitation to come apart: Air Hammer Time!

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Henry Bucki says:

flood back on compressor. i still think cabin air filter is stopped up

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andrew Voigt says:

would make a really nice steam motor with a little re-working

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Ellis says:

What was causing the new system to over perform?

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Adam Collins says:

A swashplate style pump, we use them on commercial aircraft for hydraulic engine driven pumps, last a lot longer than that one though lol

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mike vantol says:

that helical thing is called a swash plate

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JackoTJK says:

The plate that drives the pistons is called a "Swash Plate" In a variable pump the angle is adjusted to increase or decrease the lift of the piston

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Badger Pa says:

Mayne a little to much water in the system for the teflon rings to take and once they gave up the ghost the piston was beat. Awesome disassembly video. Stay safe and healthy Ray.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars daemonhat says:

leave it on the healing bench, it'll work itself out

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank Thomas says:

I`d be willing to bet if you disect the dryer you will find it destroyed. The black material looks like what is inside the dryer.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Billy Smith says:

Between the aluminum body of the pump, the face of the pump pistons and their seals, to creat a seal for the pump with the arms moving,

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Timothy Strees says:

I like doing and seeing things like this. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
