Obviously this was one of Rays shining moment videos. The "meh, don't bother to start by hand" was a hey you get two shots at each rotor and even if you cross thread one 1) they're not used to hold anything together and 2) he's going to replace at least 2 of them anyway.

Why don't you just hold his hand and whisper encouragements in his ear too? Guy can't do it and his mistakes can kill someone else.

    Hi Ray,
For most of my 50 years working on my cars I never bothered to get the rotors cut when I changed brake pad and never had difficulty with noises. But I realize at this point it's far better for to take your advice and either have the rotors resurfaced or get new ones to get the best braking and pad wear in from the start. Nice of you to break the rotors free from the wheel hubs for the do it your-selfer. Thanks for your video.

I have a RAV4 also, when I did my 4 corner brake job I replaced the rotors, the pads and the clips. I used a bolt to free up each rotor before I removed them like Ray demonstrated in the video! 😉

Simple brake job I thought -but I watched knowing I'd learn something. Sure enough, hole in the rotor to bust it loose. Awesome!

You sir are a wonderful human being.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alan Reeves says:

Why do you go above and beyond on the Rav 4 by loosening the brake discs using more time than you're being paid for but question why or if customers should put their own spare wheel away after a tyre change which , after all, should automatically be included in the cost of the tyre ( at least it is here in the UK ).

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John T says:

    Well done Ray. Kudos!
As far as slamming the DIYer . . . sometimes you don't know what you don't know. With luck, he learned from this. I'm always picking up something watching Ray's videos. If that bolt hole is present in all rotors, I sure didn't know about that trick.

If he didn’t even notice those rotors being trash, I seriously don’t think he should be doing any work on his own brakes. Seriously. No shame on the owner. Not everyone knows how to do brakes. It’s fine. That’s why there are mechanics. Took a couple times of doing my own breaks when I was newer to driving before I stopped paying a shop to just look them over after the fact to be sure I did it right.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J Mabs509 says:

Yikes, I wouldn't even spray PB blaster given customer is going to drive it back home. liability lawsuit just waiting to happen. No need for it anyways in your state. Here in Northern rust belt we get rusted shut roters off without much trouble unless it's 20 years old and never got a break job done, in that case 10 lb sledge hitting from the back side does the trick

Fun fact lift the hood on 80% of toyotas and the first 4 bolts on the front by the latch are 12 mm that's the same size as those threads on the rotors

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim Adams says:

Groovy job ya did there. 👍

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph Falcone says:

Mechanics don't like when people want to do it themselves because they dont make money that way then there is you oh let me free the rotors to make it easier for him. I love it. Your boss might not like it much ? I wonder. Is he as good a guy as you are?

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TacoBag charlie says:

100% once he has an issue he cant tackle like a trans issue or something he is going to be finding you.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff B says:

I started doing work on my own cars about 10 years ago because I was tired of mechanics breaking my shit so if he can do it himself more power to him it's really not hard to change rotors and pads but yeah after 10 years of working on Toyota's im pretty sure I can fix just about anything I even have an engine lift and rebuilt a 2az (And it ran after lol)

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff B says:

I got these oriellys pads and spring shims for the rear on my IS350 and they were not bent correctly. Apparently they weren't formed to oem specifications and they rubbed through on the rotor causing all kinds of noise. So just because they make noise doesn't mean that the guy installed them wrong

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eduardo Garcia says:

    You’re a good man !

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sprnklrmn says:

Most of us who grow up poor learn how to do these things as children out of necessity. We never went to mechanics bc we couldn’t afford to. I do all of my maintenance and more in depth things. I’m still no professional, but I try to do a professional job to the best of my ability. And if I get in over my head I ask for help or I research before I seriously Jack something up.

Glad to see you help the fella out. Not all of us have a father or a role model to teach us these things. Some men just don’t know or never have the urge to work on cars themselves. It’s good to learn new things and encourage each other to do so. Too many “pros” want to bash DIYers. Of course some deserve it, but not this guy.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Russell Smith says:

You sir have earned a subscriber good honest and helpful mechanic. 👍

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars austrianemotionalman says:

So, the tires are already down, the brake discs cost the same buying them in a parts shop or in the repair shop, the only thing to extra pay would be the min. 1 hour changing the discs. In my country about 50 bucks. I do not really understand the costumer.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars R I says:

Man, I applaud You! I make almost all my car's jobs myself and have a real bunch of tools that cut out that kind of crap happening to me, but yes, a common man, with the knowledge but not the appropiate tooling, will benefit of that kind of help you threw onto him! A great mechanic, anda a superb guy, too!

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Anthony Pilkjaer says:

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Big Picture Thinking says:

It’s strange to me that the guy had the wherewithal to successfully change the pads but didn’t take notice of the obvious damage on the front rotors. The glazing I can understand…..but those front rotors……

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Batdragon 71 says:

An honest mechanic is getting harder to find, but a helpful one is like a unicorn. If you believe in it then you are going to get to heaven one day.
Plus, who the heck has given a thumbs down to this????? I think that if you are going to vote down you have to put a comment as to why.
