I swear I hear that phone ringing in my sleep now lol.. I only recently started really watching your videos, auto repair will always be something that interests me, I just personally wouldn't want to do it full time, even though I did go to a trade school for it. Love the videos though, I hope the customer returns, id love to see the thing back working like it should!
Ray do you get all of the jobs for diagnostics on electrical issues. You are good at it
The problem is the tiny spider roaming around on the dashboard!
I have a PRHT MX-5 and the electric roof is 100% reliable,, I wonder if Toyota are using proprietary components or the same basic modules and motors that Mazda uses?
A big buildup….and no payoff. Too bad for all of us. Good diag tho Ray Ray
could be the gears that control it are bad.
i enjoy watching your diagnisis of car issues
Love the logic videos theyre always fun to watch and be a detective's sidekick
wanna install a cam in a procharged 2016 camaro? or some aftermarket drop in pistons and rods? hard job but im sure you could do it and would make for great content
Very technical and a very well laid out troubleshooting technique. Very well presented and explained as well.
Thanks for walking us through the entire procedure. As an avionics engineer and fellow gearhead, I enjoyed this video and how you presented your approach and methodology.
Thanks for doing such great work🤘🏽🤘🏽
Reminds me of an article I read years ago about an electrical wiring problem, it will take you five years to find it and five minutes to fix it!
Customer better hope it doesn't rain while they think it over lol
awe man
Have you tried using your scan tool to operate the windows and or roof?
The unit would use the increased current load to determine the windows/roof is up or down. or at the very least it will have current cutout to protect the motors from user error.
Yes, another shortie! I love them! Just a little bite of content while I'm waiting for my ride to show up or something 🙂
Click it, Click it good
..
Dang it, I hope we get to find out why it’s not working.
dude, my Pilot has a sunroof and i NEVER use it. i often forget its even there until someone else mentions it. why would i suddenly want a rectangular hole in the top of my car??? usually that's a huge problem that you get fixed as quickly as possible
The big headache with convertibles is you get burned in the sun, drenched in the rain, criminals love to cut them with knives for access and then you have major mechanical headaches when it goes wrong… apart from that, they're not too bad.
I've started to say "doo de doo de doo" every time our work phone rings and I have only you to blame. thanks a lot!!
He bemoans that is car has issues with so little miles. In modern cars mileage is secondary to time and more importantly time spent outdoors. My 2016 Chevy that is garage kept has almost 250,000 miles and other than typical wear items (battery, brakes, tires) has had zero issues and other than drivers seat and steering wheel wear looks new in the interior.
I like the new intro
Ok, Ray. I see in the background that none of the other mechanics/technicians have any tools? …or don’t have much. You look like the Master Tech everyone goes to for anything. Are the other techs doing ok with the hurricane?
I bought one of those several years ago. I passed it to my granddaughter who was in college, and then she gave it to her younger sister, who is a senior in high school. 260,000 miles, and still going strong.
What? But Toyotas don't break! They last a million miles without breaking! I love what you do for me Toyota.
Well; I like watching your videos, Ray; you’re inspiring and helpful to a hemiplegic stroke survivor; I’m trying hard to figure out how to rewire my brain so I can move my arm again; which I know has nothing to do with your repairs, but it’s great to listen to how you handle the stuff thrown at you. Good work! Appreciate your time in making your videos! God bless and have a great day!
Maybe you'll stop calling it a sunroof if it comes back!!
With no 'happy ending', I walk away frustrated.
Thank you Ray have a great day also 🔧
Anybody else's OCD triggered by Ray's highlighting??
OUTSTANDING ANALYSIS, RAY. YOU TAUGHT ME SOME STUFF I DID NOT KNOW
Very sharp car!
Ugh, the Toyota deserves better. Good car with low miles.
You had it until you switched to pink…
I did not enjoy this video because the customer has left us hanging! YOU still get a thumbs up, though.
Excellent break down of the top's system and troubleshooting. Big thumbs up!
Can you put just a little highlighter on the disposable floor mat ↘️↗️↖️⤴️🦶🦶
I have to wonder if you were in the Navy or USMC Ray. I was Avionics in a Harrier squadron, and your troubleshooting is very familiar.
Any codes????
thanks as always for the video
Love the new open…
Is it sad I knew that was a coyote mustang before you said Loud Noises? They all sound like total shit.
Why couldn’t the manufacture put modules like that in a place where you can easily access them. 🙄
"We can conclude the motors aren't bad" … respectfully disagree that's a given. I've had two cars now with power windows with "flat spots" on the motors. My Yukon would "click" like it was trying but it wouldn't go anywhere. The motor … I never did figure out how to get to … it was like between the door frame and the door exterior. The "fix" was to smack or kick the door, sometimes beat the crap out of it, to "jiggle" it off that flat spot, then it would work. shrug
Rainman we always love it when you get out the single line sheets. Thank you.
👍
Drinking game: Every time you say sunroof instead of convertible top, everyone has to drink.
Wow, nice intro!
Love you man. I learn a lot from your content and you inspire me to learn more and more about cars with each of your videos.
Hope this makes it to you and hope your day is going well brother
In a previous video you asked about getting rid of the word click when your tightening something down, my husband and I enjoy when you say it. We enjoy your video's keep up the awesome work
Most convertible owners leave shit in the trunk causing the top to not operate.
Great content as always.
And after ray stating he’ll stop calling it a convertible sunroof he titles the video 😂
I had a 2001 Solara. Put 220K miles on it before I sold it. One of the best cars I have ever owned. I would still have it if it didn't rust out.
Saw that Challenger that reved his engine. $5 is was a brother
Very nice. These are the videos you need to get back too. Stop the silly stuff. The in depth investigation makes for an engaging video. The other stuff you been playing with is not engaging and Im sure you losing people.
I can put a top on one but if one comes in not working I send them to the dealer,I do not want to get involved woth the electronics on the newer convertible tops. I will work on old school convertibles any time.
If it does come back: Beware, the rear windows may be an interrupt for the roof opening. If they won't respond to the call to lower a fraction of an inch prior to the roof opening routine it may stop the whole show. In other words: If the rear windows are not working the roof will not open because it requires the rear windows to lower slightly to allow the movement of the roof without damage.
Ray! Is it back to normal there post-Hurricane?
So the customer wants to "think about" find out why windows are stuck in the down position? Okay. It's his money but unless he parks it in a garage and only drives it on days with a zero chance of rain he could be delaying the repair until something else goes south- more electrical problems, ruined upholstery, etc.
My sedan has a sunroof, but I like to call it a convertible top.
Love your videos.. you rely on basic electrical diagnoses and common sense, rather than firing the parts cannon.. keep up the great videos, and attitude! You bring hope that mechanics can still be trusted..
Damn it, those cheap bastards! I hope it rains into the back seat. Thanks Brother for another great video!
My diagnostic conclusion is, it's NOT A FREEKEN SUNROOF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Car electrical is weird, I had a '93 Mustang convertible, a bad turn signal flasher was blowing the fuse for the top motor and a couple other things, took me a while to figure that out. Only noticed it when driving and I went over a bump and heard the flasher randomly click.
Do you have a power probe? If not you are missing out on one of the best diagnostic tools for automotive wiring!
Never seen or heard of these in Australia, we just get the bland poverty pack models !
Re: position and open/close sensing. A lot of systems will detect the resistance on the circuit when the motor is stopped/obstructed. The pop up headlights on my old trans am worked that way. There was no micro switch. This is why the nylon gears would eventually get stripped and you'd see a lot of T/As on the road with stuck open head lights. 😉
The guy canceled the work because you kept calling it a SUNROOF.
Love how you highlighted the diagram…made it easier to follow. I do something similar on crochet patterns so I can figure them out. Glad to see you getting back to "normal" routines!
RAY….you said "Sunroof" again at the end…LOL! Love the sound effect for Break Clean!! Great videos brother. You should throw in more sound effects….maybe a gravity sound? Just thinkin out loud…
your man a smart guy you done all the hard work located where the problem is no all he has to do is go to junk yard get second hand part put it in job done. When you get customers cars in to fix problems like wiring problem and ring them to tell them where the problem is you should have a fixed price and tell the customers if you put your car in to get fix they have to pay to get it fixed instead of you telling them where the problem is so they can fix it them slef smart ass
It lets sun in.
Moral of the story is don't buy a soft top
Power roof… just one more thing to go wrong. My wife has a Mercedes 560SL (1988) and the roof is manual. Just about 30 seconds to put it up or down.
Sadly that's probably the last on.
Ray you don't have to clarify yourself with the voice inserts from time to time, the people who will call you out for every little thing will always be pathetic and online.
Quick tip for organizing thoughts while trouble shooting with diagrams. Yellow highlighting the wires and components of interest is good. Once voltage is confirmed at a specific test point, use orange over the yellow for that specific test point. If a component tests good, mark it with green. And if both ends of a wire test correct overmark the yellow/orange with green. By using this colour stacking of highlighting, it becomes easier to keep track of where you've been and the results that were found.
You’re right, when the top is in position you take your finger off the switch
put parking brake to one click i know on most cars the ebrake has to be clicked at least one click for the ground. The all up all down usually do not get used till you go to put the top down so apply the ebrake and you will have the ground and they will work
Good job of troubleshooting down to the most likely failing Convertable Top Control Unit. Hope the owner doesn't get caught in the RAIN with his backseat windows down !
What a bummer I thought this was going to be a good video 😪
Yeah…you'd be good at operating and repairing rides at the amusement parks.
No, good day to you ray
Shinny new intro
Perhaps I am hallucinating, but on the page of many colors, I thought I saw one more circuit from the bottom switch headed downward with ( what appeared to be an inline fuse ). Do I need a new pair of glasses?
Just another poser who doesn't want to pony up for repairs. I hope you at least made a little money for all of the diagnostics you did.
Will there be a part 2 of the Dodge Challenger water damage? what happened?
Those darn electrons !
Could the windows be parked in there closed position and disconnected?
I cant remember how many times I have fixed electric window faults by just pressing the safety (child lock) button on the driver's door control switches.
Years back when I got married my wife had a minivan that she had for more than 10 years. Her father bought it for her after her 2nd kid was born. Anyway, it had dual sliders behind the regular doors up front. The drivers side (left) slider wouldn't slider? I read up on it and found out it was a problem with that make/model of minivan. My wife said it was a lock problem and that her and her dad tried everything and they couldn't fix it or get it open? I pulled it into the garage and took out the seats, pulled the interior panels off the door and sat there looking at its guts and googling repairs when I saw the problem. The fuel door was on the driver side and it had a safety mechanism that prevented the slider from opening when the fuel door was opened while getting gas , like if kids piled out of the van and causing the fuel door to break off or breaking the fuel pump nozzle off ? I put the panels back on and the seats back in it. Backed out of the garage..and im not BSing. I opened the fuel door and pulled the sensor out with pliers. Twisted the wires together and pushed it back in. I grabbed the door handle and it slid open like butter. Less than 90 mins solved 10 Years of Problem. side note: they are Mormons. No computers until shortly after 2012. No cellphones until I married my wife in 2011. So they couldn't google the problem and fix it themselves?
Sorry So Long..again…Mormons.
This looks so much like my 2008 Camry.
Except My sunroof buttons don't work, interior dashboard area are melted, ac vents are broken, Cruise control stopped working..
I gave it to a local mechanic and he broke the sunroof button, broke more of the ac vent grills.
I can't find the parts to it now. And Toyota is charging way too much for parts
Great video!
The Toyota Solara. The official car of retiring from the armed forces with a bird watching hobby dampened by your cronic road rage and disregard for red lights.
I've met some really mellow people who own these that drive like they're looking for a fight.
I think you may be mistaken as regards the feedback system for the control module. Mazda MX-5/Miatas with the power retractable hardtop have a similar setup and (as I understand it) the control module gets the roof position essentially by counting motor/mechanism revolutions rather than from microswitches etc. It seems quite likely that Toyota does something similar.
I'm in possession of a 2003 BMW 530i that hasn't been used in five years, the passenger front window made a terrible cracking sound when I tried it, it went down but refused to go all the way up, I replaced the regulator assembly and now it's good, however the rest of the windows didn't work then all of a sudden one by one they all started working, I could hear clicking but nothing, I advised the new owner to never ever attempt to open the sunroof, ever since his aunt whom he bought the car from has probably never opened it and it's better to leave well enough alone but just like the little girl who found the spinning wheel spindle so tempting to touch and when she couldn't stand it anymore and touched it and we all know how that story went, it's kind of like that, it's so tempting to want to try and open it. Sometimes it's better to leave well enough alone.
I'm always in awe of the breadth of knowledge required to work on modern cars. Being a mechanic is just not enough, you need to be an electrician, a machinist, and even know how to weld a little. Great detective work, Ray, and this is why I'd never own a convertible. The damn motors break all the time.
Ray is troll bait for some reason 🤣🤣🤣
