She was clearly trying to run a scam, I mean who'd drive their car to the mechanic and expect it to be ready within 15 minutes. Just tell her the scan tool can tell you how long a code has been active, then she'll back down and never return.
I would think that your company would be very grateful to you as you had video proof that the engine management light was on when you first got in the vehicle. A good argument for making a visual recording of the condition of the vehicle before getting in it / working on it.
Why do people go to a mechanic shop and then say they have to leave for an appointment? If I have a mechanic appointment, that is my whole day for appointments. SMH
It’s such a good thing you record most of your repairs incase you’re ever brought to court you have everything documented before you even pull it into the shop
Ray you can’t leave us hanging like that it’s like watching a movie and then at the very end they leave you with no explanation tell me what was the final outcome please. Yes yes I know I’m one of those nagging people that wants to know everything I’m a nosy person so tell me what wound up happening?✝️✝️✝️
I am a retired master tech with 30 years experience and owned my own shop. I had a customer come in one time with a 2000 S10 with over 100k on it 4.3 V6 with all the original ignition components still in place. He declined to have the plugs changed but wanted everything else changed. I did as he requested and even had my son in law vacuum out the truck and clean his windows,he was a heavy smoker. He came back in 1 week later carrying a paper bag which he proceeded to dump out on my counter and demanded a full refund saying that I only changed 5 of his plugs. I pulled a copy of his receipt and pointed out that he had declined to have said plugs changed and that there was no charge for the plugs or the labor. He even asked why I took it upon myself to vacuum it out and clean the windows . Needless to say he was kindly invited to leave and not come bac k . Unfortunately you will have customers like that. It's not you Ray it is some people. Enjoy your videos and keep up the good work. And don't forget to have a great day!!
Once was accused of swapping "good tyre's" for bald tyre's even when I pointed them out to the customer, luckily the wheel studs were rusted up proving the wheels hadn't been off. Told customer never to return.
The quality ofhonesty seems to be dissapearing rapidly. It seems in some circles , a thing to brag about when a " fast one " is pulled on hard working mechanics that have the exeptional quality of being honest
I think we all experience this daily. Stupid people exist, they have children (lots of them), and they vote. If that doesn't give you a shiver, not much will. I work at an eye doctor's office. People come in to have me adjust the fit of their glasses (too loose). I tighten them a little, the patient screams that I over-tightened them and am trying to harm them. So, I loosened the glasses right back like they were… "Thank you, this is what I wanted you to do the first time, you should listen better." Wow…
My grand Cherokee used to break the blend doors all the time that would result in the passenger side always being stuck in the cold position. Replaced with all metal gears and never had the issue again.
Not automotive, but computers. I had an older gentleman, who brought his computer to be upgraded to Win 95 (yeah, this was long ago). Shortly after taking it home, he was back in, complaining that he had double icons on his screen. Checked it and yes, there were copies of the original icons. So cleaned it up, gave it back to him. He was back the next day, same problem. Checked everything, cleaned them up, kept it a day checking it off and on, and it was fine so gave it back to him. Next day, he was back with the same problem. So I sat down with him and had him show me what was happening when they came up. So I watched as he opened his explorer window and proceeded to double click every executable file in the windows system folder, including one executable that Windows included with the upgrade to copy program icons from Win 3.11 program groups to the new Win 95 desktop. It was buried in the system folder, so I guess Microsoft didn't see any need to delete it after the upgrade. I tried to explain to him what the program did and that it was only meant to be run once during the initial upgrade, but he wasn't having it. He got this idea that it did something else entirely and nothing I told him would change his mind. I flat out told him to not click on it anymore, and to not go into the windows folder, but that did no good. It finally got to the point that the owner told him not to click that program and that we wouldn't be spending any more time on it for that problem he was creating. He called angry a few more times about all the icons on his screen and that we never fixed his computer.
i will wear a body cam if any customer ever did that to me! i think what they did was they were looking for a freebie diagnosis or 2! if someone ever does this to me, i would not give them any information unless charged, period!
I insist that the customer leave their car until it is done. If they are that inpatient, I would rather not work on the car. there are many more fish in the pond.
This happened to friend's shop. He put a new AC compressor in it and 2 weeks later, the engine blew because it had no oil. Rear main seal disintegrated. Customer took him to court and unfortunately won. He had to pay another shop to install a used engine in the customer's vehicle…
When ever I take my car to service, I go there and park so that the car service CCTV or the main door (security) can film or see what I do; I open the hood and clearly take some video of the engine and the cockpit while the car is running. Also same with other parts of interior (don't forget the trunk) and under the car. Then I park my car and leave it to service. Never, and I emphasize word never, has I have any problem with service costs or anything else.
Yeah, it would surprise me if they didn't know the check engine light was on. Most drivers know when that's on and I hope she's not trying to pull a fast one on you.
At least you have the video to prove the CEL was on before you started any work! Wonder if they will bring it back for the work it needs or go somewhere else now…
Give me a brake, lol, "You worked on my headlights and now my kids' teeth are crooked!!!" Wth!? Lol, I understand believe me. You doing great Ray, and you are recording your work on video so yeah, CYOA is the usual SoP, (Standard Operational Procedures).
It becomes a very slow burn when you show documentation that the Check Engine lite was on prior to putting it in the garage. Customer: Stating there's a problem on something that doesn't have an issue. Then claim during service, you inadvertently did something to the engine so you would fix it. Typical scam to get free car repair service done. I would gladly show them the footage and then call the sheriff based on fraud. Just watch how fast they run when they see the cuff's coming out.
Your channel has quickly become one of my favorites! Thank you for the great content and I’m always looking forward to seeing what you have for us next.
In the auto body industry we call that " ever since "….. You know my electric antenna doesn't work ever since you put a front bumper on my car… Here we go another ever since issue
It seems to be a trades thing, I'm a blue collar worker of another trade and will get one of these "customers" seeming monthly. It seems we are their servants (we kind of are) doing their bidding without so much as a respectful bit of appreciation for spilling our sweat for their comfort.
Woe your aircon gassing procedures are relaxed there. In australia we can't regas a system with a known leak (the schrader valves) we also can't gas a system without pressure testing
She is only trying to get free repairs 🤣
As a tow truck driver I get the. You scratched my car, or and bent something. I do pictures before, during and after.

Be glad you video taped it. Not that it matters to certain difficult people.
Why do people go to a mechanic shop and then say they have to leave for an appointment? If I have a mechanic appointment, that is my whole day for appointments. SMH
Show her the video and tell her she’s full of shit!
What a great time to have a video as an independent witness here—what was the resolution between shop and customer?
It’s such a good thing you record most of your repairs incase you’re ever brought to court you have everything documented before you even pull it into the shop

I hope you only put in the amount that came out. As soon as you said she didn't have time I suspected she was trying to get a free recharge

Rainman you need a small periscope. Debo

jeep oh=trouble, IMHO.
Classic scammers , wanting shit for free . But guess what , YOU have it on video

Ahh the "ever since ya" card again.
Ever since you put that tail light bulb in my brakes squeal…lol

Retail is like that sometimes… especially with 🤡 World customers.
Use your video to prove it.
It sucks that mechanics should wear body cams these days
I like to do a quick check of the vehicle before the customer leaves it. For this exact reason.
Video evidence defeats the scammer.
But, wait a second, the checkenginelight was on, when you drowe it in the shop, or ?
At least you have the video to prove the CEL was on before you started any work! Wonder if they will bring it back for the work it needs or go somewhere else now…
Yep. Saw the light before I started anything.
So I opened the hood and checked to see if it had an engine.
Have a nice day.
When it comes to people or Dogs, I’ll take Dogs any day.

Gravity
I knew her well

Good thing you recorded
customers like that should be permanently banned from the business, especially when they accuse you of doing something to their car.

Air box
Why did she bring it in if she didn't have time?
Same thing happened to me when i was a motorcycle mech in my 20's. I am now 78.
