Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he shows how to track down, diagnose and repair the infamous check engine light on this 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan that has a code P0404 "Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Range/Performance" stored in it. Sure you could slap an EGR valve on it but let's be 100% certain!

You are making this so complicated it is basically useless. I do not have a DRB tool so this is not helpful

Do you know what a P1682 code on a 2002 Caravan 2.4l would be? I've been trying to figure it out, but I'm no mechanic. Can you help me so I don't go spending any more money? I drove from Alabama to Connecticut with no problems, but can't drive in town without it shutting down.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim Wilson says:

Had code P0404 on my 05 Ram last year and replaced the EGR with an aftermarket EGR that I bought at Oโ€™Reillyโ€™s. Here I am a year later with the same P0404 code. It had 89k miles last year when I replaced it and it now has 98k miles. So yeah, go with OEM when it comes to the EGR valve on a Dodge/Chrysler vehicle.

Might you recommend a cost effective bi-directional scan tool for 2010 and 2011 G. Caravan?

What would be the cause that your EGR valve is not getting any power? Also have code po404

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andrew Quintero says:

What is that air power tool you used to remove the bottom bolts?

4 years later, wonder how long that BWD lasted. Mine lasted a total of 13 months, no luck finding the receipt and it was not in their system, $85 smackers down the crapper. Go Mohair only, got 7 yrs out of it

Thank you for this video, our '05 T&C (3.3L) hit 212k a few days ago, and surprised me with a double-whammy of stuck-closed throttle and P0405 on the way home tonight. Just a few days after I popped the radiator in my Camry (340k) and figured I'd fix the exhaust system while waiting for the radiator to come in… And snapped two of the 3 studs at the manifold flange, so the radiator arrived before the new exhaust manifold that I now had to order. And a few weeks before that, my '01 4Runner punched a shock right through the shock mount. MERRY FREAKIN' CHRISTMAS TO ME, 2020 can't end soon enough!
(And yes, I just ordered a MOPAR EGR valve for the van, because I prefer to make repairs ONCE.)

And you're right about BWD. In a matter of three months, I went through 7 – SEVEN – BWD mass airflow sensors. Some of them lasted a few days, some a week or two… Bought Delco and drove that car another 80k until the intake manifold gaskets blew at 238k.
And my '88 Cutlass Ciera? Oil pressure gauge sending unit, from BWD, lasted four days before it made my gauge do some crazy pinwheel actions, and I pulled the plug on it. BWD Park-Neutral switch? Dead on Arrival – no backup lights unless I went from Neutral to Reverse – never from Park to Reverse. Sometimes the backup lights would flicker if I shifted to L1. BWD Coolant Temperature Sensor? Well, I fixed that issue with always running Open Loop for a few months, before that failed too. Before I could fix it again, a drunk driver totaled me out.

My 09 3.8 T & C sets a P0404 every time Mama drives it because she treats the gas pedal like a kick drum. She never uses cruise control.
Whenever I drive it this P0404 code never sets ?
Not sure whether to investigate the EGR or not ? I just clear this code & drive on.

I have an 05 town and country trying to buy an egr they say there are two different egr valve and they look the same and only the dealer can tell me which I have any other way to tell ?

Thanks. Between you, scanner danner, wells, go tech, fordtechmakuloco, and that russian guy with the adhd (haha), I have learned a ton. Recently I got a hantech scope. I have learned to graph with our snap on solus and save the files to a pc desktop for study at home. I got a killer ford explorer with the same symptoms as a taurus you worked on that I can't figure out. I am not even sure if its a misfire, an engine airflow problem, or maybe even a transmission problem. EEEk. On the Caravan we have in our shop now, I did all of what you have done here and everything was good, so I put in an egr valve. It did not respond so I cleaned the old one and re plugged it in and it did respond at least some. Its a made in china part bad right out of the box is what it is. You buy two egg rolls and you buy two egr's. My usual google search would be something like "tps repair south main auto". In the last month I nailed three correct diags for pcm replacement. I got a buick enclave or whatever it is to work on tomorrow and it has a key code p3055 and a no communication with ecm u0100 and I bet I know what "direction", as you say, to go. Description of operation first and code setting criteria second. I learned this from you. Thank you sir.

Idk if I'll get a response but I have a 2000 Dodge Grand caravan. Where everyone sees the cgr valve is I see a coolant resavware…. Now I know I can be slow sometimes. But pleas tell me I can do this and not have to take it to my machanic….. I literally can't even see the EGR valve! ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ And this van has bin taken care of really good…. This is my second car in one year…. She needs love and I can't afford a toe.

Where do you get those wiring diagrams for the EGR? They're not in the Haynes manual! So, that's brake cleaner where you scraped off the gasket residue? I guess throttle body or or carburetor cleaner would also do?

On my 2006 Dodge Caravan I change my EGR and it was ok for awhile and code came back, so put in a factory EGR. And that lasted for two weeks brought to a shop like yours and he said it was a block exhaust system that was making the EGR. Act up,found the. Blockage in the cat replace it been good ever since.

This guy is the best. Totally the best. Definity worthy to subscribe, bar none. How can a person test the solenoid without a scanner, bench test etc?

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Blue Ocean says:

How can a person bench test that EGR valve 2005 town and country? Can a person supply 12 volts directly to the solenoid wire (6) and ground (4) to the body? Would that cause the valve to open, just to check to see if the valve opens or not? I am wondering how could I bench test it?

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars andy Depot says:

on a 2010 dodge grand carevan the egr valve is on the back drivers side of the engine

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Guzman says:

I replaced the EGR valve like 7 months ago. The same p0404 code came back again today. What would you do in that case?

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars trublue2319 says:

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marty Stevens says:

Isn't there some kind of cleaner that the car owner can put in the tank to clean the EGR while driving?

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marty Stevens says:

On a Dodge Caravan, remove the top cover and unstick the valve. Bend the tabs over on the top. File down some of the bracket on the back of the alternator bracket to make it easier to remove the EGR bolts later.

Wow, that's a piddly little EGR valve! I drive a 1.5L turbodiesel and the EGR is way bigger and beefier.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GraeMatterz says:

I have a 2005 Pacifica that is throwing a p0404 that the dealer's mechanic can't fix (I just bought this car and the last time their 3rd party mechanic tried to work on it, they had it for 3 weeks and called me to come get it as they can't fix it and are refusing to work on it anymore as the dealer isn't paying them after multiple misdiagnosed "fixes", including replacing the cat). One quirky symptom is that the code will sometimes clear when I gas up the tank. I got it to clear one time just by taking the cap off and putting it back on again. The clear on fillup only works when the system is cold. Someone mentioned to me about a similar problem in Nissans that requires dropping the tank to fix. Also, this Pacifica has the problem of the saddlebag gas tank going from half full to empty (something about a crossover pump or hose not working or plugged so it's not transferring gas to the pick up on the "top" half of the tank). Does this sound familiar?

Nice job ! I need to do mine now. I think I'll take it to my local independent auto repair shop with the oem part of they can get it. Keep the videos coming.

I did the key cycle trick on the Town and Country 2010 and there were no codes but the money light was on.. last code before cleared was when I change the EGR myself it was the same for 04 code
