Lets have a look and see why the heck the front CV axle is falling out of this 2000 Dodge Dakota when the customer supposedly just paid $700 to have it fixed! Ends up it is an easy fix !

Do the driver side and passenger side on the Dakota take the same axel? Same length, size?
I almost ran into this on my truck that axle is a half year pre 9/00 build it is 1 5/16 "C" clip groove. Post 9/00 it's 1/"2.. fact check me but I believe that's what I was told.
Thanks for the great video! It is very helpful in keeping my 2001 Dodge Durango 4X4 on the road!
Thanks again!
Noises are really difficult to diagnose. I never got good at it. I am like 1 for 189 on noise diagnosis..
Oh for the record I thought I would pass this along. You do not have to take the wheel hub loose or even mess with it to get these out. You take the upper ball joint loose with a 21mm wrench and swing it out. The CV stub shaft slides out of the axle and then you drop it down and slide it back out the bottom.
Hey what impact was that again? I work at a diesel shop and that would be handy…have all the snapon stuff available but there are a lot of tools that I don't like of snapons….I'm always after a better tool…
Great video. Like how you show how to remove intact axle-
I called for a quote for this same thing and they quoted me 725
just had my daughters 2016 4/4 patriot drivers side cv axle replaced her mechanic had to reorder it 3 times as he found out there are 4 different axles for that yr…. from Orileys,,,,
Eric, Honesty is not easy to find anymore! I wish we had mechanics like you in my area.
Great video, now I have added another verification to my checklist for drive axle replacements.
Why do you prefer reman CV shaft vs new ones! And how would you compare Cardone vs Napa both new and reman? Do you prefer Napa to other stores? Thanks. Sorry for such a long question.
Looks like the wrong cv axle wad installed on the location of the snap ring or c clip Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
ya I believe the cut off date for those was 9/2000 I had 2 2001 Dakota's ran into same problem as 1 was built before and one after . I noticed the front carrier moved in the beginning of your video a bit I actually had a bolt break in one and it dropped down and it made one axle separate while I was driving I replaced it and it happened again when I noticed it was missing
When I bought my 2011 ram. The same damn thing! When I seen that I tried to engage snap ring and couldn't. A year later I had tor replace inner shaft
question – when i removed the pass side cv , i had to hammer the inner off the shaft. but the hole thing came out . instead of just popping off the whole thing slid out of the front end. is that normal and after i get it off the shaft(axle) can i just slide it back in? please help im desperate..
I replaced a CV axle on my mini van one time and the snap ring was to small and it kept popping out every time I turn the wheel. LOL soo i take it back to ORiely and get another with right size snap ring.
This great, I am learning !
I went through this same situation with repair shops. I didn't have time then to make repairs myself. I am now having to repair the repair of the repair ….I will not turn your stomach with what they did the first time. I will be replacing my CV axles myself, and lower control arms, shocks, diff. axle seals, and gear lube change. This video is a great help as I now know what to expect, and how to avoid getting the wrong parts. Thanks!
CV shaft not broker that how they come apart there was no clamp on the dust boot
I bought that impact cause of you thanks a million!!
I know it's not Paul Harvey's 'The Rest of the Story' but I sure hope that vehicle owner got some or all of his money back from that shop. He was truly shafted at $700.
Old video but… looking at the "wrong" parts, the CV doesn't have the taper to mate with the O ring, and neither does the respective horizontal shaft have a groove for it- Or maybe I'm going blind. Also if the two were mismatched the other way around, the CV would lock "just on the lips" and possibly ruin the splines on both parts because they don't mate all the way.
…if the snap ring is INSIDE- how do you get the shaft out?!
Boy that truck is a rust bucket…
👍23+ yrs industrial refrigeration guy here & I've used Aero-Kroil since I was wet behind the ears. Expensive & none better but ya can't forget to add the cost to your misc charges to customer.
I really appreciate the way you show how to do the things. You are a great mechanic and thank you for the tips you gave. 🙂
Good Job! Hollywood needs more people like you. Thanks
Did you change the brake pads on the driver's side?
I’ve always used pb blaster. Works on everything.
So y that overpriced shop didn't change shoes??
I wish there was some mechanics in my area like you you can't trust any of them around where I'm at they're all out to get you for money
I saw the trees and houses and knew you were a fellow upstate new Yorker lol
Eric, I sure wish that you would consider moving to Oklahoma we could really use a or even some really good Auto mechanics and shop's because what we have can't seem to work on anything right and when they do they rip you off
Napa junk
My last mechanic would have done something somewhere else on the car, and then had me come back to get the real problem fixed.
That was a really good video. That's s good man.
I am hooked on this channel
You need to give the customer all the information. Then he could take them to small claims court and recoup his 700 dollars. Like all of it for malpractice and causing damage. They really need to pay Eric O. Makes us look bad if justice is not achieved.
what is the part that the hub connects into? @south main auto repair
Hi, l learned from 3 observations
1)Glad to see i am not the only one trying to fit a trouble light to stay in position..lol
2) l haven't seen a hitch hiker since the 1970's,when l used to do it…lol
3) please wear something from the brake dust…you are the most honest ,common sense, informative mechanic around..take care ,we love your vids.
Auto parts stores will only know half of everything😂👍
Geez, that guy got robbed by the other shop
Jaja
I like the intro of the break cleaner part
that front shock looks like rust is holding it together. on that front drive, a little investigation certainly paid-off in this instance. good job. customer should be happy now.
Shock s are about ready to rust out
I hope NAPA has watched enough of your videos and become a sponsor by now. It is often easier to fix a problem than to completely understand the cause. Great work.
