Instead of a $50 part and an hour's labor, was $10 and two hours of labor, but at least they saved money on the parts!

the c clamp would have done it without the socket ! (maybe) after watching it go in, change that to, c clamp and flat washer in place of socket. (possibly)

Judging by the condition of that engine bay and the vehicle apparently this person does not believe in regular maintenance, I live on a fixed income therefore after paying bills budgeting to do car repairs can be tight sometimes, but I always manage to keep all the little tidbits in my vehicle replaced air filter PCV valve oil changes whatever stuff I can do instead aside the money for the mechanical work for the harder stuff I get times are tough and we all got to do what we got to do to make ends meet but geez that's a little rough looking

Try a bit on lubrication next time spit works great.
I just squeezed mine in with the channel-lock pliers directly… completely disregarding the instructions telling me to use a C-clamp and a socket. It worked great. Same Dorman 14057 kit and the same van (well, 2000 Pontiac Montana rebadged version).
I actually did read the instructions first though and the socket is supposed to go on the round back of the cable end. It isn’t about matching the diameter of the bushing. It’s about turning that domed surface into a flat one so the clamp doesn’t slip off.
After trying to install one of those dorman kits for a customer i gave up and told him to replace the whole shifter cable 😂

Ray, what percentage of the difficulty in all your repair jobs is due to the INACCESSIBILITY of parts? My guess is 70%
Watching this caused much merriment 😁. Also three things came to mind, first if you are going to use a clamp, use a ball joint clamp because it doesn't have a wiggly end and hold the clamp in a vise. Third, your dealing with a grommet; soak in hot water, fold and insert using a pocket pry tool if necessary.

I would like to see you use a bolt or screw and washers to put in the insert.
I've done that repair with a flat washer and channel locks with soap and water lube…
You could have changed the transmission faster.
Lubrication would have fixed the issue of insertion fast. Heck dishwashing liquid would work and no residue and no lube on shifter ball will cause it to ware out again in short order
