First off let me apologize for the crappy audio in the second half of the video 🙁 I thought it was still worth showing though because the product actually seemed to work really well. It is the 697-024 Jeep Wrangler 2018-05 Manual Transmission Shift Tower from Dorman. It fit good and the best part is it worked great. -Enjoy!

Dorman is luck of the draw. Most time you draw crap. Sometimes you get lucky.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Ventura says:

I wonder if Dorman makes a better intake system to replace the stupid design of the Focus airbox. It takes a tubular filter that never fits unless you slam your foot on it just to make it one eighth shorter.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daddyoh says:

Well, maybe Dorman is finally listening to your comments about the crappy aftermarket parts they make and sell.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daddyoh says:

Short video 11.34 min long. Must have been an afterthought.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brad Silvestro says:

Need to find a TJ to replace the cam sensor. i still dont know if i timed it right

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ChillCosmos says:

I have a Dorman coolant overflow tank that replaced the rotted swiss cheese OEM tank in my 03 Envoy

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dan's Learning Curve says:

    Respect!

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rob Peters says:

I was hoping you would have put a straight edge against the bottom of the shifter to see if it was indeed flat and to make sure all the corner were going to seal completely using the gasket it came with. The anaerobic sealant is great and makes up for tiny imperfection in the mating area where the gasket can only do so much.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dr bichat says:

I owned a Chrysler product once, I am not surprised Dorman is better than OEM

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Watchman999 says:

Dorman doesn't have all day to make something better. They have to make money on their products too. This is so obviously just sloppy and lazy engineering by Dodge that they should be class-actioned. And one of the less good after market product manufacturers knocks it out of the park? Shame…..shaaaame…..shaaaaaaaame….to quote Princess Bride. Great content Mr. O.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bruce Meinsen says:

Hmmm… there's no small amount of engineering that goes into making that part. Dorman is no doubt one of the few aftermarket companies able to manufacture such a part and do it profitably ($450) while offering a replacement that's better than OEM. Well done, Dorman. Credit where it is due.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jack Jack says:

    Show us the engine!!!!

    Dorman: the wings of failure

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jam Ram says:

Melling is also a great aftermarket parts provider. Their engine oil pumps for Ford 4.6 and 5.3 engines are a vast improvement over Ford OE pumps.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars EMERSON GRALIA says:

It’s not that bad doing it from the inside.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nathan Beach says:

Had one a couple of years ago that would pop out of 3rd and 4th. Witch there was a tsb for the syncro witch we did, and lasted about 3 months and came back. Did some research and end up putting a B&M shifter in it and ended up fixing it.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tim Winters says:

As an old-school gasket user, I can attest to years of excellent seals as long as the gasket is reasonably thin and is coated, top and bottom, with bearing grease—never dry and never cork.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jesse Murray says:

Dorman is garbage and I avoid using that brand if possible.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Chiodetti says:

This is my first time hearing something positive about Dorman. This Jeep must have had a hard life. New engine, trans shifter, clutch…….

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J. M. says:

Somehow my experiences with Dorman were all positive, from a $1800 hybrid battery to control arms, blend door actuators, nuts and bolts.

$450 for that dorman part!!?? Lol crazy…$800 at advanced auto!!

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars yambo59 says:

A Dorman part that WORKS-? Im surprised Eric wasnt elaborating on the subject after all the weak Dorman products hes dealt with. Nice call on nixing the gasket Eric, one comment said they had leaks with the gasket so yeah good call-!! experience and a reliable gut feeling can be very valuable in preventing future headaches.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bub Dawg's What do you think? says:

Your buddy Scotty Kilmer is a Big Ol’ fan of Dorman Products.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dave Osbun says:

A great Dorman product. I guess this makes number two (after the fuel line repair kit). This makes Dorman’s batting average .063……they’re getting hot now!

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J Alton says:

    Great video as always.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Shane Anderson says:

Gasket covered both sides in Aviation Gasket Goo . It will never leak again

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J-TIZZO says:

I can't believe Dorman built anything that works. I was gonna tell you about the audio, but you already know….

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Shane Anderson says:

Don’t forget to grease up all the gates inside the shifter .

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ClockWatcher says:

First gear it's alright (faster faster)

Second gear I lean right (faster faster)

Third gear ) hang on tight (faster faster)

    Faster it's alright

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sam Squires says:

The world must be ending if SMA is praising and recommending Dorman Products.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Wood says:

    It is a Jeep thing!

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stephen Cooney says:

Eric, you have just made a change from your getting to be normal videos. However you mentioned that the engine was out, And being dealt with, Why did you not show us some of that? Don't know why we have to watch endless broken wire type jobs. But I still like the channel.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bulkchart 32 says:

interesting. i always thought jumping out of gear was caused by a worn trans.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Bourque says:

As a trans tech, I will always advocate against anarobic sealant. Granted I'm a little drunk at the time of this posting, but I have found that on envoy front differential's and shit like that, the anarobic sealant will crack and leak eventually. I always use GMS silicone based sealant.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David D'Amico says:

Nice work Eric, you do awesome work..

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scott Marshall says:

I miss the old Halomar sealer. It was my goto for split crankcases ala Chainsaws. ATVs, motorcycles and snow machines. Good for Transfer cases etc, even some intakes. I was told it was discontinued as it had something nasty in it. The new stuff seems to work ok, but cures slower and seems less tolerant of imperfect surfaces and a little oil (assy lube) creepage. It also is a lot more expensive (no shock there I guess).
Glad to see Dorman maybe getting back in the game, 30 years ago, when they were "Motormite" they had pretty good stuff no one else made.
I just put a Dorman GM corporate 10 bolt cover on my 99 Tahoe, and It was OK but needed some threadseal on the plug. Not a deal breaker for the price.
Maybe they are actually getting that their reputation has gone bad in the last few years.
Thanks Mr O for another good tip and supporting video!

Are you sure that rans isn't missing some mount somewhere that thing shakes a lot.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Daugharty says:

Eric never thought I would have hey time when you would say Dorman products are good units never thought it would happen hey for only proves they can improve if they want to improve

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kent Adams says:

What's better than a Chrysler transmission? A Dorman part in a Chrysler transmission! That's setting up a competition of what will break first…….

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ken from Silverdale says:

Poor, almost non existent audio at the end!!!

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Gagnon/ RoadBox Service says:

Yay doorman is too bad to nine out of 10 parts are hit or miss but I used a brake lines I don’t think they make them excellent sets when you get them

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Antonio Claudio Michael says:

I'm impressed Dorman made a better part on this one Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mavic Aerials says:

Must be the first Dorman "anything" that actually works!

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Lavigne says:

Nice to see you finally get a jeep in the shop. Brand new engine? Or rebuild? Great video!

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J. Mark Krzystofiak says:

Musta contracted with whoever was making the fix it part for Stelantis?

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richie Smith says:

  51. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Last Name says:

Is this a parody video? This title seems like fake news

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Harrison Katzz says:

DORMAN made a part that works ? Amazing!

  53. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Earl Ribaudo says:

Nice video, but when are we going to see some engine rebuilds and other things? But really enjoy all your videos.

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Onisixx says:

Be careful talking nice about them, they may offer you a sponsorship 😉

  55. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jim Hayes says:

Nice thing about the old Jeep CJ's..something like that you'd just cut a bigger hole in the floor to get at it lol.

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Yukon Cornelius says:

Never had issue with my 16 year old nissan popping out of gear… other stuff sure, but always stays in gear. lol. nice fix.

  57. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Paul1958R says:

    Eric,
Great video! You are an honorable man – you criticize bad products where due and you praise good products where due. Thank you.

  58. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nuts n Proud says:

OMG something from Dorman actually works?

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars excavatoree says:

People ask me if OEM parts are the best or if aftermarket parts are the best. The answer is, in my opinion, that it depends on the part. Some aftermarket parts are better, or at least as good for less or equal money, and some are garbage you shouldn't purchase. You have to do your homework for every part to learn what's best. There's no rule.

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gordon Willoughby says:

Dorman actually made a replacement part that fit and worked better than oem.

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ganesh Narayan says:

Mr.O you and Mr Dorman are friends now.

  62. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charles Bondy says:

Eric – What was the failure point on the engine and probable cause?

  63. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stash Oski says:

    👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sebastien Lemay says:

Interesting video! I'm now driving an EV, and not going back to gas, but this made me nostalgic of my manual transmission car. Fun to shift gears.

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kelli Smith says:

I have had good luck with some of dorman products, for tge most part they usually improve the anomolies

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John h Palmer says:

I wish something like this was available for the 1992 Ford Ranger with the Mazda sourced 5Spd manuals as in 2009, the shifter bushings crapped out and reverse, 4th and 5th gear gates were way off to the right and 1st through 3rd weren't all that much better, but I WAS able to shift the thing alright. Got it repaired by going to the dealer for the bushings, was not able to find them anywhere else if I recall and only had enough to get most of the parts, got it done, but 1st and 2nd 2nd were still stiff at times, same with reverse, but worked fine otherwise, until 2012 when I had Midas clean the idle air control valve, just so I could safely drive it down the freeway to dealer where I was trading it in for another used car (my 2003 Mazda Protege 5 that I still drive) and when I went to pick it up at Midas, the shifter had gone out, again. Again, got it to the dealer OK and got my grand out of it to go towards the cost of the Mazder.

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thomas Jefferson says:

Dorman gets a lot of cheese for being Chineseism, but i was in the auto retail biz for over 30 years and they have been pretty good at finding and developing problem issues.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Ziegmond says:

Look a millenial ant-theft device repair video.

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bowhunters says:

Some Doorman parts are made in the USA and some are made in China but they get pretty good ratings from lots of mechanics, they may not be as good as (brand name OEM like Motorcraft or AC Delco) but much better than most off name Chinese made parts !

  70. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jim F says:

    I sure do miss shifting.

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mark Roper says:

Good video! Local cops must think you are weird!! Have a great weekend!!

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ian Morris says:

Loved the Fallout "Please Stand By" screen 🙂

  73. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ken Chilton says:

Wow. Dorman. Who woulda thought? Now I have seen everything.

  74. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Taylor says:

Please stand by 🤑 Thanks Eric again 😁

  75. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rick Charb says:

    Well, there's your problem lady…. It's a JEEP!
Good on Dorman for getting right what FCA engineers designed poorly.
Moral of the story…stay far away from buying these newer Jeep products.

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars watajob says:

That's amazing! No. Not that Dorman made a good part. That a 14 y/o vehicle is not crusty enough to deserve a new engine in your neck of the woods… 😁

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars LabRat Knatz says:

IIRC Dorman makes the aluminum alloy thermostat housing for my Dad's '05 Dakota (factory is polymer)
Seems Dorman has 'a thing' for fixing Mopar's poor decisions.

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jason Kleinman says:

Even a broken clock is right twice a day

  79. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ThacMan says:

Topping FCA crap isn't that hard.

  80. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars R theprizeisright says:

I had a ford probe idr the year it would pop out of 5th all the time on highway, although the guy I bought it fro told me it was the synchronizer. I drove it 2 years like that it was ok.

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MRrwmac says:

Eric, I’m sure a lot of jeep Wrangler owners are gonna be thankful for this video!

  82. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars R theprizeisright says:

Mr. O, obviously your the expert here. I'm a novice mechanic, my saying is: "I'll try most things that don't need a lift on the outside of the engine, but to the inside is where I stop." When you do the gasket in liquid form like that, I always go around the bolt holes. I noticed you and a lot of folks going around the inside, and not including, the bolt holes. Which way, is truly correct? I can't be the only 1 with this question. Ball park, on what the motor swap costs nowadays? I know and want to respect your privacy, of work pricing, but I'm just interested in case I have to. Great video though, thanks for all you and Mrs. O do for us DIY'ers.

  83. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars yelorsirhc says:

Not sure what's up in the last few videos but your audio is super quiet

  84. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars john desaavedra says:

Amazing that all 4 holes lined up. No rat-tail file for this Dorman part!

  85. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars john desaavedra says:

I've driven Jeeps. They don't hit slight little bumps.

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! Craig Goodwin says:

You would think Parts Manufactures would be more in tune to building a "better than original" replacement part since the "original" part has failed in some fashion or another. Eric, nice to see this worked out so well. Thanks for Sharing!

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 717weston says:

    New Dorman part worth more
    Then the jeep

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ring and Run says:

There is something (positive) about the feel and sound of a fastener breaking free after years of being under resistance and tension.
Sure beats the sound and feel of the shameful thing breaking off, which is similar, but nowhere near as satisfying.

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve C says:

Now why can't all Dorman parts be like this instead of the junk they normally put out?

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Geng says:

    Dorman… NOT A SPONSOR !!! Lol

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gizmo42Rodeo says:

Chrysler products are so bad Dorman parts are an upgrade.

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars krasht1 says:

Those V6 engines are crap ! I have replaced several !

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Willie Delgado says:

Sealant that's fluid will seal all imperfections on flanges opposed to solid gaskets.

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff DeWitt says:

Something funny is going on with Dorman. My Mustang had the dreaded swollen lug nut problem and the only replacements I could find (aside from OEM), were Dorman. They are single piece, not the really stupid double piece OEM type, and work just great.

How stupid do you have to be to screw up the design for a LUG NUT!?!

  95. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars griff Hall says:

    What failed on the engine?

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Ellenbaum says:

    dorman fixed it LOL

  97. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars burt bacarach says:

I've noticed you've been saying "trust me" quite a bit lately Mr O.Are you running for office?

On another note-a godd Dorman part??MASS HYSTERIA,CATS AND DOGS LIVING TOGETHER!THE END
    IS NIGH!

  98. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gunga Dinn says:

With Dorman, every once in a while, the blind squirrel finds a nut.

Dorman, one little step above the parts that were marked Help. You know the guys that sell clips and brackets and fasteners that people are too lazy to get from the stealership.

  99. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jerry Daily says:

I agree,to many gears. I still like a four speed like my old sixty Chevy. Three forty eight.
