Come along with Eric O. when he steps out side of his comfort zone in this multi part series and has a look at this 2005 GMC 4500 with the LLY Duramax Diesel that is having some sort of issue with the FICM and the injectors and a code P1229. Time to learn something!

I hate diesels
Though I don't have all this equipment to test the way you have, this video has given me a huge amount of insight on what's going on in the system. Very helpful.
Love your thought process and thorough troubleshooting abilities
Eric, I really respect you for your honesty ! The ability to think out load reminds me soooo much like me ! My partner thinks I am nuts ! I talk to myself when I like you venture into ; How to say , I don’t work on this stuff enough & I need to hear my own voice ( my helper ) venture into stuff I can fix , but need undisturbed time to do so ? Your will to fix every challenge that comes in ! I won’t say no, until I look, with my own voice to get to the bottom. You are right, the control module is “pooched” .. Have a great day !
Why wouldn't you verify the control side wire from the injector connection to the FICM with a simple continuity test? Using an ohm meter? Same with the power side. Wouldn't this verify the wires were good?
What are you doing working on a diesel?
20 amps ! Will Knock u on your asz even though low voltage…the duty cycle for the pulse should be short
If you think this is over engineering, wait until EV becomes the norm?
At this point I’d just pull the 3 injector out and put into injector 5 and see if the diagnostics then says injector 5 circuit malfunction. ( then you’ll know it’s the injector that’s at fault
I suspect that power only goes to the injector when the engine is running because if power is constantly going too the injector then it would be throwing fuel in when it’s not needed
Wow it feels like when I watch your videos that your just talking to me which is awesome ( no homo ) 😂
took my 97 Ranger w/3.0 in to a quick oil change "place" book says 4.5 quarts they over filled, I said just oil and filter only they tried to sell me an air filter on the way home engine light came on, found hose to intake not connected (AIR FILTER CHECK) then I found the oil over full this all in one day. If you find a good mechanic keep him/ her. I have owned this 97 since New and the only reason it is still running is the people allowed to maintain it.Good job
to put all this effort to diagnose this problem on a job you really didn't want makes this job even harder . i hope the guy who owns this truck watches this video and sees how hard you worked. i wish i had the intelligence to deal with electronics. amazing work ethic!
i work on electric and gas golf carts oh boy i worked on a 48v golf cart i was curious what would happen if i used my test light KABOOM 🤣
Variety is the spice of life !
Use a pair of vice grips for a certain ground .
Wow! What a nice intro!
I have looked through the WHOLE YouTube and found a wave form that finally proves that's Diesel and gad direct injection have almost the same concept. I wish that you put more videos like this Eric. There's a lot of diesel heads that will love more of this info
Back to your brake video, I don't have a torch, I use pb blaster, is there anything better?
Runs on Bananas, had me rolling
Looking under that hood, the "special tool" must be a person. 😃
High voltage, you dodged a bullet and checked that box. Nice detective work on breaking down the individuals and comparatives. Excited to see what happens with next FICM. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
In trying to follow what your doing. Did you or what were the results of testing the one side side common through the joint? (0.1/0.1 ohm?) Then the other side common through that joint?
How you give power to a circuit, I mean power out of your probe tip, seems like you could somehow use that power probe to fire that injector when called for from the control circuit.
Eric it does not mean 12v when it says special. 12v ac or 50v DC. Strange.
Looks like inductive spike due to failed filtering in the ficm? dry or popped capacitor maybe on the output to injector coil.
If you use your Power Probe you would be assured of a good ground. Love the Power Probe.
I've been a back yard mechanic since I was young I've worked in shops doing timing chains on Hondas Toyota I've done brakes and front end wk also worked on big trucks and had a good time doing it all now at 65 its a lot harder to get things done of course with arthritis and back problems from being bent over vehicles all day I get to enjoy watching a master at work love your video's and how you diagnose things great job 👍
very very good information glad you shared
So glad I found this video it help alot I have a dead druamax that was working wonderfully and power to both sides of the injector causing it to bypass thanks great info.
This would be so easy to fix then just run it through a second time and 'discover it'. I'm glad you don't do that and you give it us warts and all along with your thought process. Great video.
Kevin Berg; Jay's Mobile Mechanic service, 2015_Rubicnn, Mark Stuckey, Kain Om remarks impressive. However, at this point, isolate the power and control line….check continuity thoroughly. If no issues found then I think replace the #3 injector with new FICM because the no. 3 injector most likely caused the blown FICM. I don't think a resistance check is the way to go on these big diesels to varify injector integrity…..use it sure; just don't depend on it. Also, I believe you can replace a logic board inside the FICM box and you don't need to program it. The board has to be for that model and year. Get numbers off old board to match up best way to go. Eric did a fine job; yet, 50 amps ain't nothing to disrepect…………play it safe; check for continuity, resistance, compare other injector results and then throw parts at it to prevent damage to engine and yourself.
For a second there I thought you totally missed infinity and beyond, but you recovered 👍
So is it the ECM OR AN INJECTOR #3
40 volts isn't scary. At around 60-70 volts you'll start to feel it
Good solid diagnosis, your parts cannon would be very dusty
Keywords "up too"
Maybe get some videos that are recent this is 5 yrs old man
Jamming out to the crazy intro music. Love the drums. But also here for the main man Eric. Always enjoy your videos. 👍
Like a CARdiologist using an EKG machine to diagnose what's wrong with the heart of his patient…lol
Isuzu sucks
what kind of scanner is that
Maybe he needed a program on his scanner so he could run a cylinder cut out test but idk what hes talking about. You can unplug each injector to test the injectors while its running. He just couldnt figure it out so lets see how you finish this job im excited to see you tackle it!
Ill stick with the pre 90s mechanic fuel injection pump one wire
WAITING ON PART 2
You should have brought your brother into this video, he is the one who works on the tractor trailers if I am correct.
How can that be that large but suck like a minivan to get to anything?!?
That's not a very big engine for that big truck but whatever did you ever make a video when they put red fuel which is for off-road in one of those hahaha something about an optical eye inside the pump
GM Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM)(LLY). Before replacing a FICM for an injector related fault code check and make sure there is not a injector or injector related circut fault. The FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module) controls the electrical impulses that control the fuel injectors. The fuel injector ignition voltage circuit is Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) , between 20 volts at idle to approximately 93 volts in order to compensate for increased engine load and RPM. The fuel injector control module energizes each fuel injector by grounding the command circuit between the fuel injector control module and the fuel injector. The fuel injector control module monitors the status of the ignition voltage circuits and the fuel injector command circuits.
