In this video I bring you along as I block off the leaking rear A/C lines on a 2005 Cadillac Escalade. It is a kit I bought off Amazon and it fit and functioned perfectly.

Anotehr simple and awesome video. This is what I consider the practical reality of owning cars in the rust belt. it's not so much always repairing everything as much as making it livable for the next couple of years until the salt gets the job finished.
EO what did you do with the rear line connections?
๐
hey Eric do you fill a report every time you use the AC machine on a car? because we dont but got told by a friend that we do have to fill up a report.
Should you have taped off the unused lines to keep debris out?
The rear A/C lines on my Sienna were leaking, but rather than block them off, I repaired them with a repair kit from Dorman (yeah, I know: eww, Dorman. They're actually really nice and work great). Cost about $50 per kit, easy to install, and the rear A/C is still functional.
Excellent video as always Eric.
I like how everyone says they was a tech for 40 years everyone wish they were as good as Eric O he is the best you would not be watching if you were that good
That's a sweet kit right there now, does that company offer a block off for them lines that are disconnected so debris doesn't just pour in them? Ya know like save what components that would still be salvageable in the rear ac. Unless all from the front to rear is all junk then who cares. Just curious Mr O
why does he need working A/C in his winter beater? our winter beater hasn't had A/C in years.
Between you and Ray… OMG, y'all need to get together
In my suburban I ended up buying all the parts from a pickup and swapped it over lol
Great video I did not know you could close AC lines off like that. What happened to other AC lines? Did you just leave them hanging loose? I take it these two lines have nothing to do with the Transmission or colleant? Awesome video thumbs up. Stay well & safe everyone.
Blast it with dry nitrogen and check for leaks. Only time that has ever let me down is with a compressor seal. And it naturally removes moisture so its a good test before the final vacuum.. And if ya want to go over the top you can get a hydrogen tracer in the bottle. But the hydrogen leak sensors are $$$$, However they really work.
Best auto channel on the tube since Scotty shut up…!
I have been working on vehicles since I was 14 years old and looking at your videos , I have learn more then every. Keep it up
They don't have a drier Eric or not worth doing because it's a beater?!
Great job ๐.
Block off kits ??? Well, I've learned something new today !!! Will wonders never cease !!!!! You've been holding out on us Eric !!!!! This is a good thing to know !!!! I'll make a mental note of that for future use !!!!! Never a dull moment at SMA !!!!!!
Auto Cooling Solutions is a business associated with my repair shop. Small world.
Good job blowing cold again
Wow never knew you could block off the back side of a AC system like that unreal unreal at a Cadillac has that kind of problems love the video
YouTube. Gotta love it. You hover over the thumbnail for this video before playing it, and it scrolls subtitles of what is allegedly being said. "Welcome back to the self-made auction channel…". WTF? ๐
You come down south to like Louisiana Alabama or Georgia or Florida you going to be wishing that back unit was working just saying
you left those rear line open to get full of dirt?
Surprised you didn't say "Whaddaya want me to do, block 'em off?" lol
Awesome
โ This is your classicโ overly used clichรฉ!! Learn a new one Eric
Dude, you have been On Fire. Much appreciation for all the great content!!
If anyone else on this channel can advise me on the cheapest scan tool I could buy to reprogram a new key on 2018 ram 1500 .. I need to buy a scan tool because also I got to fix new transmission in my wifesford focus dreaded dps6 transmission.. so will be a relearn after messing with it .. many thanks to yโall
Hi Iโve been trying to message you several messages.. could you please advise me on what scan tool / cheapest one . That will program me a spare key on my 2018 dodge 1500 ??? Many thanks โฆ maybe do you have to call Keith lol ๐๐๐ค thanks
Your audio is low. 3rd video with this problem. Maybe it's our I86 link but your audio is low.
You make everything look easy
Thanks Eric
Shame the hard lines cost so much and rubber hose replacement kit runs $350 to lose the rear AC use. Guess the kids can sweat.
it appears the little nut and washer for the high pressure side block off goes on the end of the bolt where it passes through the fitting. They are probably not necessary (because that area is threaded as you mentioned) but it's nice they included them in the kit.
Are we ever going to see the overalls again
Shade tree mechanic can maybe do this ac job.
Iโm a little confused. Not super mechanically inclined. What is it exactly this kit does? Will the AC not work anymore?
Nice kit and job , thanks
That went well. Thanks
Believe me it help to read the reviews. I know people that donโt.
you are a hacker I don't have air conditioning unit in my car get off my private page with you too they do not have the permission and they were worn๐ฃ๏ธ๐ฏ๐ โน๏ธ๐๐ช๐๐งโ๐ป๐งโโ๏ธ๐ต๏ธ๐ฎ๐บ๐ณ๐บ๐ธ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆโจ๐โจ๐โจโ๏ธโจ๐ช๐
โโฆitโs got the leatha.โ
Heyโฆ douchemobile today.
The shop I worked at manufactured barbed fitting. On those trucks we'd solder on fittings and run reduced barrier hose back to the expansion valve
I always look forward to a new SMA video!!! By far my favorite, along with project farm.
Hard to believe how many worry warts in here about the rear lines that aren't to be used again. I have a hard time readin the comments when most are just nit pickers. You all come in here to see an experienced mechanic do great work, and an awesome gift of gab I must say, and yet so many question the trivial things that would drive most to drink. I guess maybe it is just a way to feel included. Ok, done bitchin, feel much better… TGIF
Surprised this is a 2005 and a winter beater and isn't in the crusher already. I'm guessing it's days are already numbered.
I noticed the stud snd bolt provided were rather long- was there enough to maybe include the old line, thus the new piece acting as a clog in the line. All lines closed off and no open lines to pick up contamination.
I probably would've put a li'l spot of refrigerant oil on the new seals, otherwise it's all good.
just got one from them to block off a Frieghtliner sleeper
I have made one by cutting the pipe and pinching it off and aluminum brazing it. It was a cheap fix for a vehicle that I wasn't keeping long.
South Main Auto.. Nice job, but you already knew that Eric. Thanks for sharing it..
Never trusted an electronic leak detector. If you read the manual that comes with a Matco leak detector it has a list of chemicals that might trigger it and basically if you are in the vicinity of a car it might be triggered. Seriously, it is a list of like 50 things that can all be found in a car.
Hot๐ฅตwe need that a/c bro๐ฅถ
That's funny. "We will check that by doing this" works every time.
That's a nice option if you dont care about the rear air. Couple questions, why not replace the orrifice tube or check it for debris? Since the rotted out rear lines were connected to the system then there is good chance that there is debris trapped in the orrifice tube right? Second question, how do you know how much oil to add to the charge? Presumably there is some unknown amount of oil stuck in the rear lines/txv/evaporator. Lastly, to anyone who might try to DIY this, remember to only add the refrigerant charge called out for a GMT800 without rear air, otherwise you'll be adding WAY too much. Might be confusing if you try to search for r134a charge amount using "caddillac" or "escalade" since I think every single trim had rear air.
Nice
I have a 2012 Caravan where the rear A/C went FUBAR so I made the mistake of taking it to my Dodge dealer. They told me what the problem was so I said block it off. "We can't do that." So $2300 later I was cool again. The rear A/C on Caravans seems to be a common problem and is why the dealer keeps new units on the shelf.
Why not just fix the rear ac ? I'm not being ugly I'm just curious
surprised it didnt rust away
too bad the studs weren't longer could of piggy backed the lines to the rear .
Yes! Another video from SMAR! Oh happy day. Butโฆ..only 8 minutes.๐
All these years I never knew such a thing existed. Now I know.
Was there another kit to block the rear lines so trash doesnโt get in them?
Great video but… Amazon reviews are not to be trusted.
Good ole Kendra & Natalie makin an apperance
Great Job ๐ Eric. Thank you for tip on whatโs good on Amazon. There is a lot of junk on Amazon too
As long as the a/c was discharged wouldnโt it have been cheap preventive maintenance to replace the Schraeder valves?
Eric thanks for helping my friend from Maine with her Honda Accord, she said you were awesome.
You have to watch which cap goes in the high and low. On the low side the Schrader valve sits up higher (not all of these trucks/SUVs), and if you put a high pressure side cap on the low, it'll touch the Schrader valve and create a slow leak. Since the replacement caps all touch the low side Schrader, we have to leave it uncapped.
I like those, we usually use the press on block off caps from FMS. I've used the dorman compression fittings and they do work good but the line needs to be clean or they leak. usually when i block them off i use the caps on the one side and then i crush the other side and roll it up. we both know that once its blocked off that owner isn't going back.
Gota loved Amazon for odd parts, called my local auto parts store for some and they
didnโt know what I was talking aboutโฆ๐ค
that's cool
ANOTHER C O O L SMA VIDEO๐
You could block off my front AC, but never the rear. My wife's dog rides back there. ๐
Escalade huh? If he can't afford to fix it right, he shouldn't own it.
Mr.O Cool video.
You donโt need to block off or seal those lines that you removed? Will they not be subject to contamination while left open like that?
You better tail then about secure the lines. just saying
Pretty cool option for those that are looking to maximize the life out of there vehicles reasonably and still have some functionality like AC that works. Another great video Eric
Eric thank you!
Seems like a thin.say 1/8 inch thick piecs of stainless to sammich between the lines would work better. That way you'd be able to reattach the lines and not have to worry about the end floppin around and getting full of crud…..
For some reason your video's do not play on CHromecast with Google TV.
Another Cool video Eric ๐๐ฆ๐ฆ, top job there ๐
Could have put the nut on the backside for extra protection. Looked like plenty of thread.
Thanks for sharing.
Reeeeeee. You didnt replace the schrader valves.
Should pressure test b4 evacuation. If you have a leak you suck non condensables into system. Use N2 and refrigerant for elevated pressure.
How to secure remaining lines??
Ya gonna leave the floppy bits you disconnected to flop?
If you added a Rear Block Off, isn't that called a "Butt Plug"? (Dirty Dad Joke) =P
Lol. Your transitions to the comments are getting funnier. You kind of lagged a little like you weren't sure if you really wanted to say it that way but you did. I quietly chuckled.
Pretty slick
Eric o
Nice solution. Next time you get a chance, block off and tape the rear line(s) so that they do not get contaminants in them. That way, they can be used again if desired.
Thanks for the video Eric. Excellent views. Eric, just wondering, did you have formal training or are you self taught? My dad had an auto repair shop back in the 50s & 60s. He had no formal training but was a very good mechanic and everyone in the surrounding area brought their cars, trucks, and tractors to him to repair. I am 75 now and a lot of what I learned about repairing and maintaining vehicles back then has stuck with me. I was in high school back then and worked in my dad's shop until he sold it when I graduated. Cars are so complex now and you have to be an electrician as well as a mechanic to work on them. You amaze me with your electrical diagnostics and I learn from watching your videos, as well as Rainman Ray. Love both of you guys. ๐๐๐
Same company that I got the replacement rear AC lines for my Town and Country from, no complaints. Everyone commenting about not blocking off the rear lines, they are no good and it is his winter beater, so I doubt he cares if the rear gets ruined or not.
