As requested by the viewers we get a closer look at the broken valve in the 2009 Ford Escape 2.5 that we diagnosed in a previous video. Some viewers commented that they could see the broken piece in the cylinder and on top of the piston. Time to find out if they were seeing things! -Enjoy!

Cut chain and cam cover. But Mrs. Jones I saved you an hour of billable time.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Russell Moncrieff says:

Good job on the quick teardown and follow though on the root cause of the misfire. Plan "C" was funny. Typical overworked little engine to many heat cycles on the valves without adequate cool down perhaps one can only guess. The line I saw on #4 exhaust ex valve might have been carbon line but it looked like more than a shadow or carbon. It does however lead me to wonder about the L4 vs V6 each has their flaws.

I thought I saw a similar crack started on number 4 cylinder exhaust valve face

A new head on these is $800.00 US… A used engine is $650.00 US… Takes me 7 hours to change the engine….

If you change the head with that keyless crank..It takes 5 hours. If you know what the hell you're doing. As you do it wrong. You will be buying a new head again….

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nick Gooday says:

Another Quality Video… Very interesting head removal, I have the same engine in my 2014 Ford Mondeo. And you used a scrap engine as a teaching tool for all of us to see. I would have used it to teach my daughters how an engine works.. and get them to strip it down.
Keep up the good work mate.

If you just hadn't scratched the little light…can't you order a new lens? A magnet would have caught the broken valve parts. What was the cylinders' compression readings? Just five bolts holding that engine on.

no one has anything bad to say. thats so cool. so the problem was she needed a new piston? or a chunk of that thing was missing?Because the car started up. What would have happened if she just kept driving it like that? Couldn't she have just used the money she spent on a new engine to put a down payment on a new car?You made the right choice but did she?

wonder………did anything drop in when changing the plugs…..or….was the plug change sooooo ignored did a piece of plug fall in adhering to valve.

It's scary to think what this world would be like if not for the few car doctors who truly care, and are conscientious, (maybe perfectionist) and motivated to make the extra effort, bc for most of us, our livelihood and survival depends on a vehicle.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stan Haney says:

What could have caused that value to crack like that?

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Automotivated says:

I believe they saw the valve notch on the piston. I thought it was a chunk of valve at first but realized it wasnโ€™t the right shape. It was kind of a trick to the eye for a second though! You put out some good footage Dr. Obachocka! Haha. As always!

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Donald Moy says:

That 4 valves per cylinder would have made a nice engine for an early Lotus Elan or Europa.

Eric, need to get ahold of you. Love your videos, gots lots of info when working on cars. Got a few questions on a certain veichles. One of them is a 2004 f150 5.4L 3v engine. No signal ground driver from all COP's. Checked wiring on all the grounds and positive 12v for the COPs,a all good Changed PCM. Same problem. Need to know if you have any pointers and if you could help me out on this one?

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Finch says:

I don't believe that a part of the valve broke off, looks more like it just burnt out to me.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Native 99 says:

Thatโ€™s a good quote!! 1200 used engine replace! I had a dealership quote my 1,300.00 to tear into my engine to find out why it was misfiring. My fren told me I could buy a used engine for that price and drop it in. But I ended tearing into my engine myself and fixed the misfire a stuck valve was the problem. The rocker was off I put it back on and sprayed ol wd and rotated the crank and the valve became un seized and my truck is running goot!

Eric, how do you go about balancing work demands and family time. As stated this couple only has this car, a miss on a motor thats going to be replaced isn't a large issue. At what point do you say hey this is family time and the customer can use the vehicle as is until we can replace the said part or get a rental? I ask as I don't know work life balance.
