It's your classic 2005 f-150, with the big five four. You can see: she's a new york edition and a snowplow two of the best combinations ever needs a starter, and anybody that's done. One of these little fellas knows that that top starter bolt will make you lose your religion, no matter what it is. However, astro tools now makes a bit for removing the starter.
It's this one right here: it's the 18 inch long, shank, 498, pneumatic, chisel bit and big nasty, because when you're done trying to get to it, you just take the starter out.
Every 4.6 and 5.4 I've ever owned donated that top bolt to the mixed bolt bin. 2 was enough
Stop tellin everyone all the secrets we gotta make money off these jobs still
i say there i wasn’t asking your coming out of there right now or im getting the chisel 😂
Core Delete
Did one in 30 degree weather. I think it took few hours trying to figure out the right angle to stick my hand to get to all the bolts.
Knee slapper. Thanks for the grin.
When Eric puts on overalls, things get done……. Just Sayin'.
I don't think that starters going back for the core.
I want to see the video
Napa: "Sir, not only are you not getting your core back, we are now really not going to sponsor you"
😀 I love stuff like this. Thanks, Eric!
I just put an engine in one of those trucks and I hated every second of it. Everything was ridiculous and overkill and poorly designed
Damn!!!! That sucks!! I guess you ain't getting the core charge back?
That Ford isn't like all the rest? You have to use like 20 extensions and fish it through the suspension, to get to the top bolt..lol..On the upside, it didn't beat you!!
"Well what do ya want me to do, lady? Break it off?" Yes..
I hope that china made aftermarket starter last long enough to get it out your door that Kia Sedona starter comes to mind oh Astro tools make us some new politicians gas and diesel prices are killing us
I recall a similar arrangement on the old 390/428 FE Fords with a 3 bolt starter. I got those out with a 2' extension and 2 wobblies.
I just want to know if Nappa accepted that core….
Is it me or the top of the truck is touching the top of the lift?
Oh Jesus. Wtf.
I had to change the starter on my 2002 5.4 Triton Expedition in a parking garage when it left me stranded after my second day of work… That bolt is BRUTAL! I got it out, though.
Lost my religion years ago 😂😂😂
Ironic, working on a Ford Fusion myself; brake job. Those rear screw in calipers are a pain in the #$%&. I can't see a reason that Ford made them other than to give the middle finger to anyone that's not a dealership.
He aint getting that core deposit back
That's the best idea!!!
Lol. If it won't come off in one piece, it'll definitely come off in a lot of pieces!😂😂😂
Fantastic. My dad has one sitting with a dead starter which I will inevitably have to fix soon…
😂🤣🤣
Don't forget the magic words (four letter ones)!
well eric their goes the core refund!!! lol
I take it you don't have to worry about a core fee on the starter.
Step one…..
"Remove starter from bolt"
Works on crown vics too
Yeah my truck still doesn’t have that bolt installed 2 years after replacing the starter, I can verify it isn’t necessary…
It's gotta be an optical illusion but the top of that truck tools smashed against the roof
Hahhahaha “you’ll lose your religion “
Perfect!
I had to do one of these in a f350 and boy I had to leave half way getting it out get some lunch and come back to finish cause it was pissing me off lol
LOL!!
Literally just struggled through the top bolt last night on a 2008!
Even better than I expected. I can totally understand why there's no footage of the carnage. 8)
there goes that core
That was Awesome!
LOL! Best starter removal… EVER! lol
When I started out I would pop the belt and then compressor loose from the engine. Just to get to the top bolt on my grand marquis. Now I can get em without but I feel ya
Why do they do this to us? I changed the starter on an ‘87 Ford Ranger in a parking space, in the dark, by feel, at about 20 degf…..no problem! Your last video changing the alternator caused me emotional distress!
Is it just me or does it look like roof caved in?
Hmmmm that I feel is a bit overboard
So what does the new one look like? Did you use the magic silver paste on it.
Does Astro make a chisel bit for putting the starter back in?
Haha..love it.!!,
Haha! I've found myself in similar shoes.
Respect.
Recently I removed a blower motor with the help of a mini sledge after I found that the last screw had a stripped head.
Was coming off anyways lol
I have actually had luck getting the 2 easy bolts out and wedging a chisle between the trans and starter and cracking the top ear off of the starter. Have done it more than once when I did transmissions.
Well it would have been nice to know how you're going to put the new bolt in with the new starter.
John Deere tractors from the late '70s and '80s had an impossible starter bolt, and Snap-On made a special wrench to deal with it. I borrowed one from a mechanic friend, bought a cheap 9/16 open end wrench, and with the help of a torch I made my own.
Wtf thru the roof?
You still have to put the bolt back in.
When I saw "pneumatic chisel bit", I knew that starter no longer existed
I did one on a 2500 dodge with the Cummins, and I had to put the truck on the lift, position on socket with a 20in extension. Then I had to climb on top of lift so I could attach my ratchet and break loose the bolt. Not too difficult BUT the kicker is that I was joking around with my Buddy and said " imma use this 20in extension to remove that starter" as a joke and well, it ended up happening
🤣🤣🤣
Or smash the crap out of it with a hammer
Needed the bolt, broken starter was in the way. Was….
so you distroyed the starter housing?
Ah the old 3 valve 5.4 f150. Throw it away now to get ahead of a drained bank account!
Fuck yeah
Ones did 3 in one day
😆😅🤣😂😂😂
When all else fails, percussive maintenance?!
when you make the video for this one just leave the cussing in it and bleep them out, i always think a lot of bleeps is hilarious
I've done 4.6 with the top bolt use a swivel and extension 13mm socket and a rachet,40$ 60$ core destroyed
Man alive – that's rough! The rumour is that the most eligable bachelor in New York would'a had them bolts unscrewed in no time.
C4 will remove anything.
Question: Over the years, you must have seen each manufacturers attempts to modernize the Pickup Truck. Have the actually changed any of the running gear, or have they just added more and more complexity to the ancillaries and tried to kid us it is new?
6 inch extension, deep 3/8 10mm socket and a rachet is all thats needed to get that top bolt out.. you slip in from just in front of the starter before the motor mount i believe and slip the socket and extension towards the bolt and reach up with your other hand and guide the socket onto the bolt.. then rachet it out.. i usualy fish the socket and extension first and once on the bolt i put the rachet on the extension.
the key is you need an extension and socket combo that bring the extension to the back of the starter but not long enough to hit the motor mount making it impossible to get out.. the end of the extension should JUST be at the back of the starter motor case.
if the bolts stripped or rusted out.. DO WHATEVER NEEDS DONE TO GET IT OUT LOL
If you can't get to the bolt, make a way.
Color me slow. Took me a 2nd view to comprehend.
I tried to remove a starter in the same kind of truck in my friends driveway….it didn't happen, and I'm pretty good after 40+ years of wrenching. It was sent to a shop with a lift, and they also had a hard time…I will never own a Ford, LOL.
The 5.4 was so poorly designed that it started to rub off on all the bolt on parts around it, thus causing their designs to be compromised in the process 😂
What about the core?
It can't be stuck if it's a liquid! LOL, love this!
AWESOME.
I am lucky to not have had to do a starter on a Ford pickup. But know me I would have to go to confession. I hope I have not jinxed myself.
I think the nerves saved is well worth the core charge. Better yet, Sell them a new starter.
Do I hear that you are sayin' that busting up and then replacing a starter, that was probably past its "Best used by" date, is cheaper than sessions with a therapist?
Go ahead, send that starter back for the core.
still better than having the chance of a broken block where the starter mounts, Chevy
Did you return the core?
Honestly… when I watch your video's I understand that you have to keep a lot of your word's choice for the family friendly screw you over Algorithm that is youtube~ But that made me laugh.. cause you know what.. as you said in a lower comment you can only allow that rage to build for so long before you just gotta.. and at some point it goes beyond Asking your telling it.. lol Hope you have a decent weekend Mr.O
As a former NY municipal mechanic every day was an air chizzle day. I have removed many piece by piece with a torch.
ROFL
Can’t wait to see you put it back in with said chisel bit
LOVE IT… YAK YAK YAK ~~~~~
so much for starter core
It’s your classic crappy Ford that’s built with crack head engineers
Looks like an Ontario Ford LOL !
It will make you sing a certain R.E.M. song.
Haha. You are a trip.
I'm intrigued, tell me more.
ahora si te pasaste ese JAJAJAJA!!!😅🤣😂😂😂😂😅🤣😂😂😂
I think Astro needs a "NY Edition" tool line.
I did one of those once. You need two different extensions. Two different impact swivels the starter end with the built-in socket. You have to get on the bolt with a swivel swing the extension over away from the starter. Add another impact swivel connected to the second extension and put on a long ratchet. What you've effectively done is made an offset or a Z extension. You've helped me with some of your comments I'm giving you one back. Many years ago a friend of mine told me he was going to do a job on somebody's car and change the starter. He told me what kind of car and I laughed at him. I told him he would have trouble he didn't believe me he called me up whining he could not get to the starter bolt. I sent him to Sears. Remember that place… I sent him for impact swivels long extensions 12-16" I don't remember. And that offset brought the rear Ext. forward over at an angle and then forward over and straight again toward the front of the truck. If done correctly the ratchet and the rear extension are in line with the bolt head properly in line with the engine. After spending many hours the wrong way he did it my way and it worked out very well.
Perfect timing. Last night I was helping a guy I know that was changing a starter on an F250 5.4. It's a plow truck also and the core was rusted through a couple of spots on the solenoid.
I’ve never had enough trouble with that particular bolt to nessitate disturbing Thor .498 from his slumber…
Probably the best tool for any Ford.. just saying
