HARD PASS ON THIS VEHICLE. I’d say please come pick your butchered vehicle up that thing is nothing but a headache and a never ending problem. Not sure who had the truck first but they shouldn’t be allowed to touch tools anymore.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars riven eva says:

Oh wow what a mess! Sometimes the heads just have to come off to fix broken exhaust manifold bolts, and this is one of those times. Good call on avoiding getting yourself into a situation that you’d likely regret later trying to extract those bolts with the engine in the car.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars gordinistanopolis says:

They could be drilled out then Helicoiled but motor would def have to be out to do that so big job and big expense ! Is the truck worth it ? especially as to get a roadworthy all the rust needs to be repaired as well

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars realcygnus says:

Virtually ALL battery packs(& not just for power tools either) just use standard/dime per dozen/off the shelf cells. Its all about those damn proprietary form factors. Its one of the BIGGEST scams of all times. If you're lucky, in the charger itself there could be a trim pot/cap that adjusts the low voltage activate threshold, its unlikely though. Otherwise you'd really have to know what you're doing. But most importantly, ALL rechargeable batteries only have a limited number of charge/discharge cycles, its just the chemistry/physics involved. & since you're not just an occasional user of your power tools, that is probably all you need to know. But at that absurd price I'd try a few things 1st myself too. Perhaps even 3D printing the damn case(compatible) myself, which is ALL you're really paying for. If it wasn't for the lawsuit happy nature of our society, I'm sure people would be doing exactly that as a side biz. Shhhh don't tell China. 🤪

Kinda how you kick start Milwaukee 18v batteries that won't charge. Just jump one battery to the other for 15 mins, then charge as normal. Works like a charm!

Good call passing on that rabbit hole.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bam6972 says:

ive fixed these batteries before. theres one dead 18650 cell .. ive put in a used good 18650 cell and all is good for over a year
each cell is 3.7 volts and 4.2 fully charged. there is 4 cells in one pack

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars robin casias says:

Those snap on batteries run both 7v and 14v tools, 4 total 18650 batteries inside, creating two separate 7v circuits, the board in the actual tool is what decides if it's using those batteries as 2s2p for 7v or 2s2s for 14v. Anyways all that to say it's possible to save that battery but is time is limited, the ones I have saved so far usually only stay good for a handful of charge and discharge cycles.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chance Roessler says:

Don’t short lithium batteries to other batteries directly. You can cause the good battery to fail. If lithium batteries are low voltage there is likely a bad cell or cells. Lithium batteries can pass enough current to fry good cells. Take the pack apart and you will have o replace those bad cells better to just get a new battery pack.

You know, if you put those dead batteries in a microwave with a clock and set the clock back and then turn on the microwave, you will go back in time three seconds.
Of course the batteries will explode but that would have happened three seconds after so you should be ok.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars deelkar says:

As someone with Hands-on Lithium recovery experience, please do not connect cells of different charge level in parallel. if you have a deep-discharged cell try to use a current limited power supply (like a good lab power supply) and trickle-charge the bad lithium battery to above the cut-off Voltage of the brand charger.
But even if you succeed, by deep-discharging your lithium battery you will very likely have permanently damaged it. To what extent remains to be seen.

That happened to my 1994 Chevy K1500 5.7 trying to replace the exhaust manifolds. Ended up pulling the engine out, drilling out 5 broken bolts, heli-coiling 2 holes, replacing front and rear crank seals, all of the freeze plugs, replacing heater connection and cutting the bad connections off the oil cooler lines and doing the flare fix on them and now my 220,000 mile engine doesn't leak or burn oil or leak coolant. Runs like a champ…now waiting for it to blow up…ha ha…

Ray, if those are LIPO batteries, they have electronics in the battery that monitor the cells, & if those electronics decide the battery is dead, it won't let it be charged, even if you replace the dead cells. As I found from swapping out dead cells in one of my laptop batteries.

Definitely a good call in the Excursion! That would have pointed the finger right at you!

Though I do hope ya explained to the customer what does need to be done… Probably cheaper just to get a new crate engine from Ford!

Edit: now that I thought about it, I have to wonder if there are battery hacks out there so you can revive/rebuild those packs, I remember seeing it done for Ryobi and a slew of Dyson vacuums.

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars PandaMan says:

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steven Johannesman says:

Ray, its likely the bms is in the charger and that the charger wants to see the voltages for all the battery cells before charging. Web search for linking bms for a wiring diagram. Also a dead cell is likely

  62. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Moefuggerr says:

Lost in never never land….I have done that with a regular current limited variable power supply. To get the voltage up enough for a charger to work with it. The battery did not last much longer before it died real good.

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roger B says:

There is a trick for drilling out below surface broken studs that's perfect for this situation. You need a self-centering bit guide made for drilling door hinge screw holes in doors. Replace the wood cutting drill bit with a good metal cutting bit. The guide will hold the bit in place (centered) as you drill – preventing damage to the tapped hole.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tig3rj says:

On the battery,..If the voltage is to low, the built in circuit will not charge them..Lithium if go below 3v will not charge in most cases… The range is 4.2 to 3volts per cell..To odds are one cell is below that threshold..

The other + and – could be for the balancing of the cells. You are better off using a Bench Top Powersupply to try and charge them… Now there is a little trick you can do with a car battery…but you could them kill it..but if it is dead and going to toss it..try it.. 82. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RyeOnHam says:

Having taken out tens of thousands of 'stuck' bolts, those are savable, but access might be an issue. I used dental burrs and patience to GRIND a hole down the center and then step it up a bit with a drill bit so I can get an easy-out on it. Heating up the aluminum block from the side and then they usually pop out, especially after a few hammer blows. Probably 90% effective. The other times you'll have to drill the fastener out now that you've got a centered hole. I've had a few over the years where you just have to dental bur the living daylights out of the fastener.

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Xlaxsauce says:

When you're dealing with a battery like that you can bring them back by trickle charging them. Like have such a low current it'd take a 10x longer to charge than normal. It is also more energy efficient.
