Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3 4.8 and 6.2 intake system. High flow air filter and hardware are being installed on the engine. Not all intake systems are created equal. Get a quality performance intake to wake up your engine for more horsepower.

A filter like this ruined my truck's engine. Never again. I'll stick with stock airbox & filter.

In years long past I tried many boy racer gadgets – flex fans, advance kits, different air boxes. Threw away many parts that would be valuable today. There are some things the factory gets right. BUT – one good way to get a bit more responsiveness is get rid of your 195 or hotter thermostat and go with a 160 or 180. Computerized cars actually like this. Also any intake that pulls cooler air from outside the engine room is going to help. The pretty Chineseum thing your customer brought, as you know, is just a shiny boy racer gadget to impress his dullard friends.

Always follow up a cool air intake install with a tune completed at a tuner shop. Simply installing a cool air intake won’t gain you much except for better throttle response and a more throaty exhaust sound.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @joshuaraffensperger3592 says:

Do they give you more hp? Not really. Do they give you better gas mileage? Not really. What do they do? Increase throttle response and make your exhaust sound more throaty.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @joshuaraffensperger3592 says:

Great way to improve/increase throttle response.

Ok kids, old timer here. Don't do this stuff. The engineers that originally designed the vehicle knew exactly what they were doing.
    You're welcome.

The problem isn’t the oiled air filters, it’s the person servicing them. You know the old saying if an inch is good a yard must be better, right? The people over oil them (especially when they spray the downstream side) and then it gets sucked into the air stream. I’ve never had an issue with oiled air filters. Been running the since I got my first car almost 40 yrs ago.

@Ray, keep up the great content! The kids love watching them with me, and it’s inspiring my one son to consider the work for a future career. Although I believe we are under valued and some shops try to take advantage of us, it’s still an honest living..

    2 more hp. Gains! 🤣

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @acr4715 says:

Those aftermarket parts are counterproductive. They will actually decrease hp.

That's a ram air intake, not a cold air intake. Unless I'm mistaken, cold air intakes have to travel below the engine before it reaches the manifold, to not let the air go through a tube pre-heated by being in the top of the engine bay.

Well, that's what I heard years ago.

Metal is bad. It heats up. It's called cold air for a reason

I had a K&N air filter. As mentioned it was contaminating the MAF so I took it off

Back in the day I ordered an air raid intake for my C1500 with the 4.3l V6 and it was night and day different! I could actually spin the tires on purpose!

A tube is a tube volume is volume.
Now a now a filter is a different story. But honestly, today the cold air intakes are really just a gimmick and waste of money. The OEM's have engineered the intakes on vehicles these days to perform just as well, or better than an aftermarket intake tube. The only difference will probably be sound…

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @jeffschnee1167 says:

Just cut off the plastic muffler, plug the hole, and get additional throaty sound. Just turned cold air intake into lukewarm.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @bobmigarski283 says:

My favorite type of cold air intake are the ones that go right above the exhaust(usually on Hondas) then they act like my pos stock impala wouldn't take them to gap city.

I always wonder when little boys will grow up and use a pretty much optimally designed unit without trying to make it noisier or 1/2 horsepower more powerful. When I was a teenager I used to remove baffles and the like, but then I matured and also learned most of the mods either do very little or actually make thing worse, although because it makes more noise you think it's more powerful.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @danielgoetz7821 says:

I like a throaty intake as well. 😊

Just as I tell people all the time . To get more air . It has to filter less. No other way . Especially on forced inducted engines. Some areas dirt is the size of rock. But here in SE Texas it is cake powder. From 99-2015 I’ve replaced over 25 engines because of these so called cold air intake rechargeable filters.
Just last week I checked a customers filter unit? And when I took it off. Pushed a white rag into the intake tube and pulled out covered with dirt. He said he always serviced it. Held the filter to the sunlight and it was like looking at stars with light coming through.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @zillatattoo says:

I seen a video years ago. this guy did all kind of positioning and testing. basically had to blow cold air into a fender well intake, he got 2 more hp. Fenders sure but those hot ass engine bay "cold" air intakes, no. Its already designed and programmed (factory) for certain parameters and performance.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @bgood2u says:

    Dynos prove these are junk.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @mattbrown5511 says:

Unless you have a way to evacuate the hot air from the engine compartment, all air filter boxes are going to let hot air into the intake.

I am currently taking one off a Jeep I recently bought. Lets too much dirt through, and as Rainman says, it superheats the air (BAD) going into the manifold.
