”Intro Music by Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio”
Thanks to Jesse for making the intro and graphic for us to enjoy!!!

We've got a 2008 Honda CRV Let's key it on real quick. Approximately 9,286 mil on the odometer. Came in with a check engine light. Uh, there was some other issues that were uh uh, addressed on this car earlier.

I wasn't working on this one. Dave had this one, but uh, it had a P0171 System lean code. Now what that means is that there was more air entering the engine than what the engine's monitoring system picked up. There are mass airflow sensors on the intake stream in these vehicles.

There she is right there. That's our mass airflow sensor right there. Uh, what this thing does is the ECM will send some current into that and it will heat up a little element inside of the sensor body and as air cools it off as it passes over, it will change the resistance on that circuit and then the computer can use that resistance measurement to hypothesize how much air is coming in. Well, what had happened was is there was more air coming in than uh, what? The uh the engine had recognized.

Now, that's usually caused by a vacuum leak on the engine Somewhere you get, uh, you'll get a leak here. or leak behind the throttle body at a gasket intake manifold leaks. uh PCV System leaks. Hose leaks.

Things of that nature. Uh, we had plugged the smoke machine into this vehicle and found that there were no leaks on the intake system anywhere. Now, one of the primary and most popular ways to connect the smoke machine is through the vacuum Supply tube that goes to the brake booster. So when you pump, pump your smoke into that vacuum line, you cut out uh I don't know about 90 95% of all the system that uh sees ambient air or sees engine vacuum.

but or you test uh, that 99 or 95% of the system but you cut out One critical component and that is the brake booster. The brake booster is the assistance method to uh have a softer and easier to push brake pedal uh from the user or operator. So what'll happen is this thing bolts the firewall right here. The brake lever attaches right here and so when you push that brake lever, it actuates on this Rod that Rod protrudes through, sticks out, and then pushes on the plunger on the back of the master cylinder.

Now the way it provides assistance is there is a spring-loaded diaphragm inside of this unit when you apply vacuum to it, It natur wants to pull this direction, but again, it's springloaded so it only really actuates when you apply pressure. Well, we uh, we couldn't find any vacuum leaks so we decided to pull this unit out right here. and we're going to vacuum test this real quick to see if this guy is, uh, the problem causing our our lean system condition. So watch this, we'll grab the smoke producing machine.

This is effectively a very large and expensive vaporizer. You know, like those things that the uh, the kids are sucking on these days? Uh, it's kind of like that that, except it's not cherry flavored. Uh, there's basically a uh a solution inside similar to baby oil. and when you power this unit up, it will heat up the element inside.
It will vaporize that oil and then cause that oil to come out of the machine as a thick, rich white smoke. So let's go ahead. loud noises. Let's go ahead and power some uh, some air up to this.

Hit the little button there red button vaporizing in action. Let's go ahead and turn it up here. Get some flow. There's our little flow meter.

We'll fire it all the way up and any second. Now there it is. There's our smoke. So watch this.

Going to go ahead and plug that in to the booster. I'll cap it off with my thumb right here. Look at there? You guys see that right? Let's move this some so we can see a little bit better. It's coming out right there through that stud.

See that smoke coming out? Yeah, right there. Now you can see it. This thing has rusted out and cracked right around this area here and it is leaking through that stud. Super difficult to find.

Dave Found it with the smoke machine. That's a diagnosis. We're going to go ahead and get one ordered. Slap it in and that will solve the engine's running lean condition.

Bet you never thought that a faulty Brake Part would cause an engine / drivability problem. but there it is. Proofs in the pudding. Diagnosis complete in a short video.

See you guys later.

My dad had a brake servo (thats what we call them in the UK) fail on his old Austin Maxi in the 1970's. This was before computer controlled engine, so no fault code. But the effect of the extra air was to increase the engine speed. So he was slowing for a red light, hit the brakes and the engine started to speed up (car was an auto). He got a hell of a fright and he had to finish the journey using the hand brake.

I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 4.7l Magnum that started misfiring out of nowhere yesterday. Got it home and plugged the code reader in, and it gave me the P0171 code, Fuel Trim Lean. I looked and listened all over for a vacuum leak, didn't find anything and since the misfiring only lasted a couple minutes out of a 30 minute drive, I thought maybe it was a glitch in the Matrix. Drove it to the bank and gas station, then came home and parked it for the night. Got up this morning to go to work, and no start. Cranks fine, but it's not firing at all. I got out whacked the gas tank a few times with a plastic deadblow and it fired right up. Dead fuel pump with almost no warning.

Long story short, if you get a P0171 code and your car suddenly refuses to start, a good place to begin is at the fuel pump.

Happens all the time up here in western Pennsylvania. Rust issues here are outrageous. Why can someone come up with all the high tech BS new vehicles and EV's have but it's impossible to keep metal from rusting ?

I'm old school enough I've never worked on a engine with any electronics at all. Electromechanical was the thing, if even that. So no codes to guess about. Either the thing ran or it didn't, and if it ran decently that was often good enough. I have to say it's inspiring to see that the darned electronical hogwash actually helps technicians to get things working, and it even improves on "good enough" standards. Last I looked even slightly at one it was all brand specific. You needed a computer from the car brand and those were only sold to licensed technicians and only at ridiculous prices.

When I was a kid there was a neighbor who worked on some French car brand in his garage. They sent him the really sick cars that the brand garages had missed fixing at least three times, and he would diagnose and most of the time have it fixed in a couple of days. Those he couldn't repair were basically ready for the scrapyard. This was before the computer was considered cheap and reliable enough to use in ordinary cars. So it was all experience and being stubborn enough to actually find all the weird problems only by hand and feel. I know technicians still has this ability, but modern cars are more advanced, has a lot of tech added that no one had thought of back then. Things such as catalysators or the fuel tank evap that keeps gasses from the tank in check. So having a computer tell you all these details really helps.

The old fashioned way to check that is by clamping off the hose to the booster with pinching jaws vice grip with the engine running. You can also pull the hose off at the booster and block off the hose with your thumb. Often you can smell the burning brake fluid in the exhaust.
