We've got a 2008 Honda CRV Let's key it on real quick. Approximately 9,286 mil on the odometer. Came in with a check engine light. Uh, there was some other issues that were uh uh, addressed on this car earlier.
I wasn't working on this one. Dave had this one, but uh, it had a P0171 System lean code. Now what that means is that there was more air entering the engine than what the engine's monitoring system picked up. There are mass airflow sensors on the intake stream in these vehicles.
There she is right there. That's our mass airflow sensor right there. Uh, what this thing does is the ECM will send some current into that and it will heat up a little element inside of the sensor body and as air cools it off as it passes over, it will change the resistance on that circuit and then the computer can use that resistance measurement to hypothesize how much air is coming in. Well, what had happened was is there was more air coming in than uh, what? The uh the engine had recognized.
Now, that's usually caused by a vacuum leak on the engine Somewhere you get, uh, you'll get a leak here. or leak behind the throttle body at a gasket intake manifold leaks. uh PCV System leaks. Hose leaks.
Things of that nature. Uh, we had plugged the smoke machine into this vehicle and found that there were no leaks on the intake system anywhere. Now, one of the primary and most popular ways to connect the smoke machine is through the vacuum Supply tube that goes to the brake booster. So when you pump, pump your smoke into that vacuum line, you cut out uh I don't know about 90 95% of all the system that uh sees ambient air or sees engine vacuum.
but or you test uh, that 99 or 95% of the system but you cut out One critical component and that is the brake booster. The brake booster is the assistance method to uh have a softer and easier to push brake pedal uh from the user or operator. So what'll happen is this thing bolts the firewall right here. The brake lever attaches right here and so when you push that brake lever, it actuates on this Rod that Rod protrudes through, sticks out, and then pushes on the plunger on the back of the master cylinder.
Now the way it provides assistance is there is a spring-loaded diaphragm inside of this unit when you apply vacuum to it, It natur wants to pull this direction, but again, it's springloaded so it only really actuates when you apply pressure. Well, we uh, we couldn't find any vacuum leaks so we decided to pull this unit out right here. and we're going to vacuum test this real quick to see if this guy is, uh, the problem causing our our lean system condition. So watch this, we'll grab the smoke producing machine.
This is effectively a very large and expensive vaporizer. You know, like those things that the uh, the kids are sucking on these days? Uh, it's kind of like that that, except it's not cherry flavored. Uh, there's basically a uh a solution inside similar to baby oil. and when you power this unit up, it will heat up the element inside. It will vaporize that oil and then cause that oil to come out of the machine as a thick, rich white smoke. So let's go ahead. loud noises. Let's go ahead and power some uh, some air up to this.
Hit the little button there red button vaporizing in action. Let's go ahead and turn it up here. Get some flow. There's our little flow meter.
We'll fire it all the way up and any second. Now there it is. There's our smoke. So watch this.
Going to go ahead and plug that in to the booster. I'll cap it off with my thumb right here. Look at there? You guys see that right? Let's move this some so we can see a little bit better. It's coming out right there through that stud.
See that smoke coming out? Yeah, right there. Now you can see it. This thing has rusted out and cracked right around this area here and it is leaking through that stud. Super difficult to find.
Dave Found it with the smoke machine. That's a diagnosis. We're going to go ahead and get one ordered. Slap it in and that will solve the engine's running lean condition.
Bet you never thought that a faulty Brake Part would cause an engine / drivability problem. but there it is. Proofs in the pudding. Diagnosis complete in a short video.
See you guys later.
My dad had a brake servo (thats what we call them in the UK) fail on his old Austin Maxi in the 1970's. This was before computer controlled engine, so no fault code. But the effect of the extra air was to increase the engine speed. So he was slowing for a red light, hit the brakes and the engine started to speed up (car was an auto). He got a hell of a fright and he had to finish the journey using the hand brake.
I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 4.7l Magnum that started misfiring out of nowhere yesterday. Got it home and plugged the code reader in, and it gave me the P0171 code, Fuel Trim Lean. I looked and listened all over for a vacuum leak, didn't find anything and since the misfiring only lasted a couple minutes out of a 30 minute drive, I thought maybe it was a glitch in the Matrix. Drove it to the bank and gas station, then came home and parked it for the night. Got up this morning to go to work, and no start. Cranks fine, but it's not firing at all. I got out whacked the gas tank a few times with a plastic deadblow and it fired right up. Dead fuel pump with almost no warning.
Long story short, if you get a P0171 code and your car suddenly refuses to start, a good place to begin is at the fuel pump.
Man! No wife unit?!?!? Come on! She is the life of the videos!
Good job Dave.
Dave and the smoke machine to the rescue 👍
Thank you for the lesson. I never would have thought of that. If someone told me my brake booster was the cause, I would have thought they were lying.
Happens all the time up here in western Pennsylvania. Rust issues here are outrageous. Why can someone come up with all the high tech BS new vehicles and EV's have but it's impossible to keep metal from rusting ?
You are excellent at explaining how you arrive at your diagnosis! If I ever live near you I will have you work on my car for everything! Keep up the great work!
I'd give you two thumbs if the I could.
Well done dave 👌😎
Great analysis of a complex problem.
Rebuilt a few of them in my time I’m old school was taught how to rebuild a lot of things instead of just replacing them
Way to go Dave !
Here is a comment, for the algorithm.
I love it when you Smoke My Mind!
Can one test the brake booster with a hand-held vacuum pump, to see if it holds vacuum???
MAP sensors, more reliable than MAF sensors.
Nice
I just finished a mercedes that had a ton of codes, ecm internal fail, fuel trim, all kinds of crazy stuff! Bad Wheel bearing!!!!!
🎉Will that booster leak make the brake pedal feel mushy?
I'm convinced You are a Doctor, great diagnostic skills 🙏
I'm old school enough I've never worked on a engine with any electronics at all. Electromechanical was the thing, if even that. So no codes to guess about. Either the thing ran or it didn't, and if it ran decently that was often good enough. I have to say it's inspiring to see that the darned electronical hogwash actually helps technicians to get things working, and it even improves on "good enough" standards. Last I looked even slightly at one it was all brand specific. You needed a computer from the car brand and those were only sold to licensed technicians and only at ridiculous prices.
When I was a kid there was a neighbor who worked on some French car brand in his garage. They sent him the really sick cars that the brand garages had missed fixing at least three times, and he would diagnose and most of the time have it fixed in a couple of days. Those he couldn't repair were basically ready for the scrapyard. This was before the computer was considered cheap and reliable enough to use in ordinary cars. So it was all experience and being stubborn enough to actually find all the weird problems only by hand and feel. I know technicians still has this ability, but modern cars are more advanced, has a lot of tech added that no one had thought of back then. Things such as catalysators or the fuel tank evap that keeps gasses from the tank in check. So having a computer tell you all these details really helps.
Finally, a video less than 30 minutes long (or 1 hour.. or… whatever it was these days…)
Ray, the length of your videos is getting out of control!! I grew a beard watching this one!
Been having the same codes in my 4th-Gen TL. It’s been driving my crazy for months.
Proof positive that you must test the entire system. Good catch by you and Dave.
You’re a generous!!
Usually there's a check valve on the booster and they have been known to fail. They are used so you have at least ONE assisted stop if the engine dies, after that you will be pushing a lot harder on the pedal to stop-so plan ahead
I have used my smoke machine many times and have never even thought of using it on a brake booster. Good job and thank you
Dave’s diag for the win👍👍nice work fella.
( Reckon he’s a keeper Ray👍👍)
Way to go Dave 👍👏👍👏
Good info to know! Never would have guessed the leak was in there !! Keep up the good videos
Why did it have to be removed to smoke test ?
This is the first time I've seen 549,000 subs. I'm spreading word, working to reach 550.
Always wise give the MAF sensor a rinse for good measure
The old fashioned way to check that is by clamping off the hose to the booster with pinching jaws vice grip with the engine running. You can also pull the hose off at the booster and block off the hose with your thumb. Often you can smell the burning brake fluid in the exhaust.
Dave for the win! 👍👏💯
Way to go Dave
Your right I would never guess brake booster cause lean code, but your wrong about one thing, the proof wasn't in the pudding, it was in the smoke, Reeeeeeeeeeee……..
The only thing lacking in this video is Dave telling us his story. Come on, buddy, you can do it!
Why not weld around the stud like the manifold.🤣
Well, he did say he wanted to trim the video times.
Mission accomplished.
As a vaper I'm offended about the think of the children vaping comment. I know you realize that's a Democratic talking point. They want kids smoking cigarettes to keep the tobacco industry alive. God I hope Desantis veto that bill if it makes it to his desk.
But Dave's not there : )
Brilliant to learn. Thank you.
NICE….how log did it take to come to this diagnostic resolution.
Ray I consider this an extra video for weekend viewing nice. Make the video long medium or short we ll watch them all
Excellent information!!
Had this issue on my Aunt's Audi. Couldn't find the problem until I cleared the code and took it for a drive, code would come back as soon as I used the brakes!
That there Dave guy is a pretty smart feller!!👍👍😁
I think this is the shortest video you put out in a while
Ray interesting Dave gave you a nice video and you gave him credit (a short weekend video) Ha e a good weekend
You have inspired me to work on my own vehicles again. Thanks for the great videos like this and the long videos as well. Learning a lot.
spraying carb cleaner on that bolt would probably change the RPM too
Happy Sunday Ray.
Crazy! That's what good diagnostics skills can do.
That’s why I go though intake 🇦🇺
I’ve been fighting intermittent Po171 code on a 05 Accord for a long time. I never can find a vacuum leak but I haven’t checked the brake booster, hmmmm, going to call the owner and see if he can bring it by.
Vacuum lines are a terrible system on engines.
Key it on? That's not a Florida thing. Where are you from?
Wow never seen it before amazing
First car I ever drove was a 1961 Valiant. No power assist anything. Always used right foot to press on the accelerator pedal, and both on the brake pedal to stop. Plan your stops in advance.
Awesome!
hay Ray it does not matter the length, it is always great content and you always learn some thing
new and interesting during you fine videos! just keep up the wonderful work.just wish you were near by!
That was one of the first things my instructor told us in brakes class. Pretty neat stuff though
I've encountered many faulty brake vacuum boosters where they are usually filled with brake fluid or oil affected on older cars. They can be rebuilt.
Props to Dave – he wasn't here man 🙂
What’s happened I never thought it will be a short video man(I am sad)😔😔😔😔😔….you never do that for us….we need a long video…
In Scottish borders mercedes sprinter are bad for this and there oil lubricated vaqum brake pumps had 4 to do in a week very expensive parts and the vaqum brake pump is so much fun to change over . your videos are brilliant.
I have a Ford CMax that had the P0171 too lean code after my wife put the 85% ethanol in the tank. It cleared itself after using it then putting the regular fuel in it. Just a diagnostic tip if you hadn't found a leak with the smoke.
Excellent explanation of P0171 code. and great trouble shooting on finding leak.
had alot of issues with my car shutting off whenever i apply the brake in traffic on my 98 nissan b14, turns out it was a faulty booster and the vacuum line running to it as the valve in the line was also damaged
Ray old buddy, your the best.
Pudding….
Why do Hondas always have such tiny battery?
Sunnyboy Daves Fixes- sorry, couldnt help myself…
Good catch, who would have thought it.
Wow! Great work, Dave……Most Dealers would have replaced $3,000.00 of perfect stuff, and then announce that they can't find the problem!
Incredible!!! Who da thunk!
I had a brake booster fail on a 1977 Monte Carlo years ago. It caused a lean condition. Before I could repair it my brother-in-law borrowed the car. The engine went into my dad's yard truck after that.
I need help People. Im from chile. South a América. I want to buy a chevy colorado 2011 3.7 at. But got a problem. The first gear dont shift until You get to 3000 rpm. Could be an expensive repair? The price is 5000. Something like that.. got 170.000 km but i tested and beside that its really Good…. one Withe no problem the price is like 11.000 something like that
That's amazing! Thanks for the video
now now my vape is no cherry flavored it is fruit loops flavored 😝
I once worked on a Jeep, where the brake booster was so bad, you could hear a sucking sound that changed as you applied brakes. As you might expect, the vacuum leak was bad enough to make the engine run really badly.
I need me a smoke machine. Commercial products, too much moolah. Gonna make my own.
Soft brakes with MIL light on, the first road test should be the tell tail sign you have a fuel system lean problem
Did the owner notice a braking issue???
Good to know (I have a 2008 Honda CRV. Bet it would apply to other cars as well)…would never have thought to look there.
Ray, you do you with regard to the length of your videos, and I think we'll keep watching. No REEEEEEEEE in the comments from me.
You're amazing…
I have a ‘07 CRV . I really appreciate you showing them.
Just changed brakes and rotors, you inspired me to diy it.
Great Work as always.
Good set up Dave, made Ray's job easier ,great teamwork 😅 keep the videos coming 😅
I did a throttle body clean recently on my civic because it was idling low and occasionally killing, did the idle re learn procedure and while air box was apart i decided to clean the map sensor with CRC map sensor cleaner, ever since then i would occasionally get a P0171, i re-checked my airbox/fittings hoses and everything looks good, could cleaning the map sensor be going bad after cleaning?
75th! Good Sunday afternoon Ray and the wife unit. And the new employees as well! Roger in Pierre South Dakota
And Ray does it again. 😊
Thanks….. I am trying to solve/troubleshot this P0171 on our 2010 CRV too……. I cleaned the MAF and replaced Purge Valve. I have not found any Vacuum Leaks.. I was going try Adjusting the Valves next…… I will recheck for Vac Leaks especially around the Brake Booster. The other part(s) to check for this code is the Fuel Pump/Fuel Regulator and Fuel Injectors.
Hey ray ,hope ur not mad at me anymore😅
Nice catch!, 👍🏻
The shortest video that you have ever produced. Did the baby oil smoke make you ill?
Puddin'? I want puddin'
