In this quick tip Tuesday I show you the process I use to open a hood on a Toyota 4Runner that is stuck shut! This is not to common but it is a huge pain in the butt when it happens. -Enjoy!

This tip saved us real $$$$. Our 2006 Tundra was in the garage with a broken cable and dead battery after we were gone several weeks. We drilled out the hole to access the cable. One tip we needed was to have someone lifting the unlocking piece while another opened the safety latch. THANKS!

I'm looking at this video because at around 1-3am someone broke into my neighbors toyota car so I wonder how they do it

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phil VH says:

I always thought that the hood didn't open because it was engineered that way. That being they're so damn reliable, you don't ever have to open it!

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Worton says:

You are the fucking man!!!! Worked great … thanks so much

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Edward W Benes Jr. says:

What he meant to say was, "don't wait till it's stuck, oil it now" LONG DRILL BIT FOR SALE! GET EM WHILE THEY'RE HOT!

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mistermatsuda says:

Thieves just break the glass, no drilling required.

Thanks for the tip, the dude doing my safety check unhooked my latch, now I have to do surgery. I'll clean up the latch and relube so it doesn't stick open anymore but the hole will be covered up with black gorilla tape just in case. Thanks!!

Thanks for the video. I am having an issue with my wifes Lexus RX 300. The latch is new and doing the same crap as the old one. It has to be poked to reset the locking mechanism. It is a pain in the ass. Is it the cable hanging up? Thanks again and have a great day.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MIKE RUSBY VR says:

well just opened mine. managed to open it the first time then forgot to put the bonnet latch on as I was so excited and it slammed shut again 🙂
so the cable was doing nothing and the bonnet tightly shut, so I leaned on it a few times, popped my flat screwdrive underneath
and it suddenly popped up to the postion where you can put your fingers in to release the catch. saved myslef a few quid, although QUICKFIT saud they couldn't fix
it as they don't do body work WTF

i still have to get the cable back in the housing underneath the drivers side, PITA really (Mine is a 2006 yaris)

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Final Theory Games says:

I have a 1998 Toyota Camry and the hood latch cable broke. I don't know if my locking mechanism is the same, but yeah this is a bitch.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Darrell Lindsay says:

Thanks for this. Got me started in the right direction. I was also able to monkey a pick in from the right side of the latch assembly. A shorter pick is best as there's not a lot of room to work…but there's quite a bit of space in the latch mechanism to slip the pick in from the right (and towards the front of the vehicle). Small patience test as its all blind. This was for a 2000 tacoma…not sure how much space there is in some of the other years…

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rafael Osorio says:

    But.. how to drill?

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brandon Rivard says:

Great vid thank you!! Spent hours trying to remove grill, bumper etc to get to the hood latch. FYI this works on 04-09 Prius as well.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steven Leblond says:

I have a 96 Toyota Corolla and the past 2 day ive been smelling a burning that smells lile a hot glue gun. Is this why or is there melted plastic causing it to not open?

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greenleaph says:

I am sure there is another way as oppose to drilling the hood latch.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gold Wolf says:

Now I know how to steal car batteries 😂

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars AnAxeToGrind says:

Just did this on a 2001 4Runner. It worked like a charm. I used a DeWalt bit after seeing that the HyperStep comes in a set that costs $300.

Could you maybe do a video on how to rewire the cable through the latch? That’s where I’m stuck and can’t locate any instruction. Thanks a million for this upload by the way.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Parker says:

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Al Newell says:

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mj Banken says:

This isn’t helping me get my hood open

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fue Kue says:

Thanks for the post. I had use your method to get the latch to open. But I still don't understand why the puller inside doesn't pull the latch and it is so hard to pull.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Albitre says:

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Samantha Midgley says:

Watching this because I’m fixing my starter, closed the hood to go inside for the night, with the battery out of the car, and now can’t get into my car to open the hood.
    I’m a dumbass.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Doublages De Lanaudière says:

Some people maybe drilled thru the radiator

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg West says:

Mine unlatched when I went to center punch it, so I just took it out, oiled the living tar out of it, reinstalled (sans anti-theft cover. I then cut some chunks of rubber about 3/4×3/8×3/8 and stuff it into the now compressed rubber springs on each side of the engine bay frame. Mine was stuck because of two things, 1) the extruded rubber 'push up' springs that help pop the hood open were flowed and tired.
    2) the latch mechanism was pretty corroded.
Now it works better as new and that pesky cover is out of the way for the future.
    Great vid, Thanks

Excellent videos!! This one was super also. Can you please share – where did you get that 1/2" "hyper-stepped" drill bit??? I have looked all over, and can't seem to locate anyone selling them. I looks like it would come in handy for a number of different jobs. Thanks in advance!
