This is a rather long video of me babbling and explaining some of the problems I ran into using the www.MyDipKit.com hydro graphic kit. I hope that through some of it all you get some insight as to how to do your project and what products to use. I had a very hard time getting answers before I did mine so If you have any questions I will do my best to answer them to the best of my knowledge.
This is the kit I used originally:
- Hunting Attractions Trek Camouflage Kit
- Size - Designer Elite Level
Bought it from - www.mydipkit.com

Nice! There's a lot more to plating, painting steel/metal than meets the eye. That really turned out well! ๐Ÿ‘

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Reynolds says:

Definitely appreciate the tips Eric, I was thinking about dipping my AR. Had a lot of questions myself and feel better about doing it now. ๐Ÿ‘

Iโ€™m pretty sure the toilet paper roll in the bathroom is on backwards.

Awesome video I think it came out perfect. Just wanted to ask did you topcoat the gun after it was all dry and cleaned up or just leave it. Again great video!!!

Great video! Iโ€™m about to dip my ribbed Browning BPS barrel. Most information Iโ€™ve found on this topic. Thanks for all the pointers!

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Wilson9d3Outdoors says:

Can you dip with it being blued? Smart idea with the blueing by where you put the forearm on and off!

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars hank harrison says:

what did you use to clean the synthetic parts and the barrel?

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars E954 Rr says:

    How is it holding up

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charles Harrison says:

What do you use to get the lube off the barrel and receiver b/f you dip them

Great video… not done by pros but a real person…. real comments and answers…. Thanx for sharing.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Duncan Mac says:

Pretty neat process. The company I bought my computer from does that process to custom cases. Not cheap I might add. Thanks for the video.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jonathan Miller says:

Super informative thanks a ton. I have a ribbed barrel and was worried about how it might turn out but not anymore.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Supreme Lawn Care says:

Can you dip a wood grain stock and forearm with this stuff?

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ghostlegz says:

bet you could have used brakleen on it.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roy Lane says:

Seee how the sides of the tape want to pull toward the inside when you dipped the Stock. That means NOt ENOUGH activator. It is fine for what you done but, on larger jobs like motorcycle parts it takes more activator than what you would think. I use a 1.7mm tip HVLP gun to spray Activator with.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roy Lane says:

The masking tape from DIP123 is the best I have used. It turns to paper and just falls off when you rinse it so, you don't have to wory about peeling

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roy Lane says:

OIt is easy to make those mistakes you mentioned the first time or 2. I been at it since 2014, I am still learning

Thanks for the video. You answered all of the questions I have before I dip my 870 stock. Tubes is loaded with basic "here's my dip", but your video has excellent info. FYI, baking soda and vinegar are great form cleaning tubs. Sprinkle heavy coat of soda and then spray with vinegar until you get a wet paste, work it in a little with your hand. Let soak for a while, re-soak and scrub.

Hey, thanks for the rambling…. That's exactly what happens when two buddies are doing a project and experimenting on how to do it. Ramble on brother, ramble on.

Honestly, this was exactly what I was looking for. Very helpful, informative and probably the only video on dipping a ribbed barrel. Also, you don't seem like a douche bag which makes it even easier to watch for almost an hour Thanks man!

I just spent the extra 90 bucks and bought a factory camo shot gun and saved a lung.
What about painting a rifle barrel ? They get real hot at the range how does that paint hold up to the heat? Great video thank you so much.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel C. says:

Very Koool ๐Ÿ‘ Vid, nice JOB!, LOOKS very cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž, but a lot of times that's how we LEARN, either from our Mistakes, or sometimes from bad "Teachers", but now, I think you've just created an "animal ", I'm gonna start also, & see if I can do it, cuz if you can do it, ๐Ÿ‘, I can do it!!, ๐Ÿ˜ lol, but being a serious note…

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Blizs Garage says:

Looks great and good video. Question I have is when you re-dipped did you sand or paint the defective spots before re-dipping?

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jan Verschueren says:

''I think it looks good, but I don't know, what do you think?'

As a retired army reserve, I know camouflage has to look irregular (remember: you're trying to hide a regular, identifiable shape), so I think you're doing well here…

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph Day says:

    great video

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mad Max says:

Holy shit!! An hour long…..if you have a short attention span, don't even waste your time unless your willing to watch it in parts..
I'm also trying to educate myself in the arts of Hydrodipping and I will say that you do have some very good tips and clarification of them.
I was able to find some useful understanding on the pre painting rituals.
From what I understood, the project needs to be sanded in order for the primer to adhere itself to the project's surface and the primer in turn will leave a virgin surface for the color base paint coat to adhere to. Now for the color base paint, it's important that the paint just dries to the touch but does not fully cure. In average this can be achieved within 2 hours depending on conditions. They also said, not allow the color base to fully cure, this assures that the hydrographic have a good bond to the base paint. At this point fully curing the project is then needed for the clear coats for which they recommend not to be cheap on. On this particular tutorial the used a 2 part clear coat and the also said you can do multiple light coats as well as long as you're following the clear coat's instructions.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Patrick Tucker says:

I've watched a LOT of hydrographic video's and this is by far the most informative. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I'm about to dip a gun and I think this video helped more than any other I've found.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nate Best says:

LOVE the detail, thanks for the close-ups! I've been wondering how it does with checkering, details, etc.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph Burnham says:

Great video! I understand I was a USAF aircraft mechanic for 25 years and mistakes are a really bad thing. You did a really good job glad I watched it ! John3:16-17. ๐Ÿ‘

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars lucklogic99 says:

    Excellent and useful well done

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Robinson says:

I always used the crappy camo tape, and was always left with adhesive stickys because it just does not all come off. EVEN with brake cleaner and all that did was soften the finish on the wood and smear everything to hell. Lesson learned there.
This stuff i have seen before, but not seen it done – thanks for that Eric O. Will i try it ?
Not this year….maybe next on my 870. Looks almost like paint, and i'm thinkin how about a coat of satin finish spray poly to protect the the camo ?? Anyway thanks Eric O

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Douglas Thompson says:

P.S. Is that a weather proof finish? When hunting in the rain here we used to get a beater shotgun and just spray paint it! Rust was a main concern with blued guns so if we took a treasured weapon we used to use gun grease on the outside and sometimes even STP which seemed to stay on in a pouring rain. The fun waterfowling was working the dogs and calling them in close so they never got a chance to flare from the bluing. Nowadays if I could get it I would go for a matte stainless in my A-5 or side by sides. Good times. I started my oldest boy on an 1100 almost thirty years ago now. Hard to beat a mess of duck or goose gizzards fried up properly. Take care. Doug

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Douglas Thompson says:

Hello Eric, I have had good luck with cold bluing in the past (Birchwood Casey) although not hot bluing it did last quite a long time but i put several coats on. The more coats the deeper the color and the longer it lasts. Have you tried walnut or even milder baking soda medium when just blasting paint off? It is much gentler but removes all paint nicely. Nice project and 1100's are a tried and true shotgun. Is Sheba your bird dog/retriever? lol!

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jordan Dingman says:

Great video!! I am getting ready to do this to my 12 gauge pump shotgun and had one quick question…
How and what do you use to plug each end of the barrel so nothing gets in it?
    -Thanks
