Wonder if the fuel pump has a Intermediate Problem were it's working then it's not Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC

The service manual for the Hyundai Santa Fe talks about a PCV value intermittent issue causing vacuum issue, maybe just enough to cause vacuum issues on one bank.

Hey, as with my a8 the gas is running back into the tank and it is not starting, but only if tank is half and more empty.Perhaps in this case it is similar (I don't know how the pump and it's sump is engineered with the Sonata).Just fueled it up and now it's ok? Just see what will be happening if the tank gets more and more empty

Thank you for the video, I actually have the same year of sonata but mine is 4 cylinder the check engine light came on and after diagnosis it say o2 censor I went to change but front and back but the light came back on again I checked it says lean fuel bank one I did a smoke test I didn't see no leak. Please can you help me on what next to do am actually getting frustrated right now because I have spend a lot of money on it

With the miles on the odometer, I'd check with the customer to see if the fuel pump's been changed. If not or not sure, do a pressure/volume test, engine hot, then scope it for dropouts, running current and possible brush/commutator wear. Check the relay plug in for what looks like very hot or burned contacts and pins. Does this have an Inertia switch? Had the harness side of a switch connector get hot and INTERMITTENT lose connection, causing a stalling condition while driving it. Finally, leave pressure tester connected overnight, verify pressure comes right up to spec the next morning. Hope This Helps.

I had a Ford contour years ago that it would dump excessive amounts of fuel into the cylinders when it was really cold out when it was started for the first time that day. I never did figure out why that would happen. And it didn't do it all the time just ever now and then but I had to take the plugs out when it would do it and use a torch to get all that blame gas out of them. After I did that it would start every time. Crazy stuff that can happen lol

Does this car have injectors?I think its one of those giving more/less fuel while running, and cold weather will affect them especially 8 or 9 below.Rip em out and test them at that temp..

Hi, My 09 sonata ESC & check engine light come on and car dies while driving. No codes. Pull over and it restarts. May do this several times and then not again for days. Dealer has no clue 3.3 V6. Thanks

Eric, Sometimes we make a mountain out of a mole hill and try to fix things that aren't broke! LOL! Nice set of vids!

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alex Brophy says:

Great series of videos good job! As for the long crank time i would agree and suspect either fuel leak or check valve in pump. An effective test is put your fuel pressure gauge in series and crimp off the side going to fuel rail and watch pressure over a few hours.

    Keep up the good work

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Emt Scythe says:

We go through a lot of O2 sensors here down south, I have had lots of problems out of the Bosch sensors bring bad out of the box or that won't jive with the computer for whatever reason.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ray Jenkins says:

there is a valve built into the pump the only way i have found to test them is to break down and buy the 12mm adapter from mac or who ever comes to your shop

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars rmk825 says:

theres always  that guy hanging around out there called Murphy Law, usually long cranks are a combination of probs, cold weather and plastic parts, not a good combo, hang in there

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Terry Beharry says:

Well! I looked at it this way… Whenever you buy yourself a Hyundai…. You just bought yourself a disposable car…. Even though I am the owner of one .. got it dog cheap…. was an offer you can't refuse…..

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars m ph says:

I think you have it fixed. The 02 off causes the fuel trim to "set'" to the crap part throwing everything off. You mentioned you checked the coolant temp in comparison to the IAT cold, so you can rule that out.

What I would do is pull the plugs for a visual, see how badly they are worn and see if there is any lean or rich "look" to them.

I just worked on a simmilar case, 2007 Impala. Very hard to start when cold and blew black/rich smelling smoke for the first couple seconds. The Previous owner (a county sheriffs department) dumped a TON of new parts into it (fuel pump assembly, plugs-wires, cam sensor, bank 1 02 sensor) in an attempt to fix the problem. I purchased the car with their diagnosis of needing a new engine wiring harness/new pcm. Not sure on how they came up with that but???

Ruled out fuel pressure (left the gauge on overnight and it held pressure), no codes, IAT was reading 40F when it was 0 f out. Pulled the plugs and they were all black carboned up along with the new 02 sensor being the same way. New plugs, 02 sensor, and a new IAT sensor and its running/starting perfectly. I want to drive the thing to make sure it doesnt foul the plugs out over time though. We will see.

In my ramble, plugs make a huge difference with cold starts. Wear/deposits will cause extended crank times

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom O'Connor says:

Bad o2 sensor can cause a lot of unrelated problems and a lot of weird codes

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Paul Grottel says:

first, good job. secondly  maybe the no start problem is related whether the car is level or up- or downhill. i have seen fuel pumps with cracks either in a plastic part  or in a hose and when the fuel level did cover  the crack there was no problem and vice versa. i know it is a wild guess. if you have access to the fuel line on the engine you could wait (after running) for one or two hours and then loosen the line (alps yeti style:-)). if fuel is squirting than the pressure is ok.  or maybe the MAF is dirty. ok enough is enough;). PS. please ignore my english.

I have an 2000 Elantra that has the check engine light on. It's got a bad O2 sensor which I have to replace when it gets warmer outside. We just had some sub-zero temps earlier this week and I had a hard time starting it. I'm guessing the same issue as you had. It starts fine any other time.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nick Nicu says:

You've done your best Eric, don't worry. You didn't mention the mileage but I saw it in the video-116K. At that mileage any Hyundai is dead anyway and it's going to end up where you've picked that fuse box for the Jeep. LOL!

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Monte Hyler says:

Great video series! The hardest thing to repair is something that will not "stay broken"! Keep up the good work!

Hey there I have a similar slow start on my 97 avalon xls its cold out here in pa sometimes below zero but it also happens in summer but my battery was completly dead a couple of times this winter could it just be the battery after it runs for a few it starts right up tnx . you make awesome vids by the way

    Yea, What Steve said .

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phil H says:

maybe check for a tsb?? might be one. but im thinking the same thing that lean o2 sensor caused them rich numbers and most likely flooded it during the long crank times it had, or fuel bleed back

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars STEVE ROB REVIEWS says:

I just love the phone ringing and the door chimes going off – you operate a real shop, not a film studio:) my two cents worth- O2 operating in a interment state causing high fuel trims at times flooding the engine so on a cold start the ecm is keeping the injector dwell time way too high at times. I think the car is fixed. Hey just a youtube Yahoo guess. 👍

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics says:

Not being able to reproduce the customer's complaint is one of the toughest things to deal with in this field. Should we get paid for spending time chasing a problem and finding nothing? Well at least you found some problem and took care of that! Who knows, maybe that lazy O2 fouled the plugs on the rear bank and caused a hard start in the cold, but now everything is cleaned up and back to normal.
