In this video we have a look at an '07 Hyundai Tucson that came in with the check engine light on with a code P0102 Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Low. I also have a little rant about the local "lick'em and stick'em" shops we have in the area handing out inspections stickers. -Enjoy!

Great video Eric. Your absolutely right about cya. I’m living with one now with an old 79 Scout that I put a an engine in that he had another machine shop build. His shop that pulled the engine out went out of business and he couldn’t find anyone to install it. So I decided to be a nice guy and install it for him. Now I’m living with every little hiccup on it and going to have to deal with a possible bad rebuild. I knew I should have said NO.

I am always shocked to see how far some people will take their car down the road in near complete state of disrepair. For the sake of your own and other's lives, just because it still drives doesn't mean you should.

My dad replaced a bad alternator in one and three weeks later they came back accusing him of 'doing something' to their a/c. The compressor had smoked or something.

I wonder why the unplugged MAF signal didn't have any bias voltage on it, Usu there is something like 0.5 v??!

Respectable well informed mechanics should operate like this ,

While no one really likes to hear: "your car needs $500 – $1000 in repairs" I think you do a good job letting people know there are other obvious issues that need to be addressed as well as other potential issues that may arise. And it seems like you inform them not solely in hopes of retaining / obtaining business but because they are repairs or things that require attention. Thank you for your videos!!

Great video, as sappy as it sounds it truly warms my heart to see a guy who knows his abc's
forwards and backwards and cares about the honesty problems mechanics have to deal with.
I'm sure there are many mechanics out there that pull the trigger on the parts cannon too often
not because they are not honest people, they just may not have the scan tools and skills required
to figure out some problems .

You Don't Spray some maf sensor cleaner on the wires inside first to see if you can clean it up?

It's hilarious to see the people in the comment section saying that she should park the car and find "other" modes of transportation til she can afford to fix it. I would like to see one of them find "other" means of transportation and utilize that for a just a week. Ya'll would lose your minds I bet. It's easy to pull out the soapbox and preach to other people without knowing sh!t about this customer's situation. A LOT of people, men and women both, are not mechanically inclined. She probably drives this car every day and things like breaks, struts, ect. tend to wear out gradually. It's not like a blowout where it is in your face. She may not realize how dangerous her vehicle is. Might try telling her first, and MAYBE she can trust eric to fix what is the most dangerous and slowly repair the vehicle. Maybe a church could help her or such. But people shouldn't belittle her and criticize her w/o knowing more. I personally take care of several elderly people's cars for simple things like brakes, water pumps, alternators. Etc. No, I don't own my own shop or anything, but most garages around here are crooked as hell. Only 1 garage around here similar to SMA. I wish that there were more.

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RON OBRIEN says:

Eric. How about you tell the customer that they might have some bad food in the fridge, but they won't know until they open the fridge door. You can't "open the fridge door" on the car until the drive cycles are completed.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RON OBRIEN says:

This is a tough situation with a customer not knowing what going on. My sister in law had a 6 cyl car running on 4 cyl. I happen to hear the car and asked "how long has it been running like that?" She said "running like what????"

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Charlie Crown says:

Third time lucky for her so, now just wheel bearings and rear struts to go. Hope she got them done 👌

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Harrell says:

    You have proved the fix!
The rest is up to the customer.
I am 72. I know enough, watching you, to trust or not trust a mechanic.
    Thank you!

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Doe says:

I love that 'pull-up resistor' you used on the signal pin of the MAF to test the integrity of the harness hahaha!

The ole West Auckland W.O.F. aka Lick & Stick… dammed car could be on fire with collapsed suspension and it would still pass.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Manuel Santiago says:

What if I've replaced the mas and it's idling between 550 and 625 and than shuts off when stopped?

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jay Eff says:

I'm having that issue now. 2006 Hyundai Tucson, just changed out the MAS and now I'm getting multiple faults. I guess that since that's the first sensor from the air filter, once that's fixed, the system just moves down the line nitpicking everything else.
Does anybody know of an online forum where perhaps I could get some advice on my issues?
Great video! Subscriber +1 today, at least. Thanks man!

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Will's Hella Heat says:

Ive had a p0102 code on my acaida every since i did the timing chains and vvt vales on it replaced mass air like a dummy newp same code pops up almost instantly figured maybe bad ground checked all grounds seemed to be good but guess im going to try hat test light ideal guessing its just a headlight bulb and wiring cut off a junk vehicle

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Andrews says:

I can say you are the man I wish my wife could have gone to while I was gone to sea. In 94 I moved ashore for various reasons. But two interactions with garages certainly concerned her. I think we should always consider our customers to be our friends and family. They are some ones.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars sir lancelot says:

Dude, watch a ton of videos, like the channel and everything , but you know . . . drama queen much ? You're a mechanic . Every mechanic I know drives a complete crap box. She's an old lady on a fixed budget . Obviously doesn't put a ton of miles on that vehicle and you want her to dump thousands of dollars into it ? Is there public transportation ? Without a vehicle it's basically a death sentence for seniors. Were you scared because you had to drive a stick shift ? Good grief.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars holly anne says:

Do you use electric grease on the electric connection's. Mas Air

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars richard champey says:

Question: is this lady "elderlyish", a widow woman or younger? If she has gone to three shops before yours, have they all been for repairs or just annual inspections? Just wondering.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Van Wolosoff says:

    Tops
