As you said, Ray. this was an old vehicle and the panel you cut away to access that one bolt was brittle and non structural anyway. I noticed it cracked when you cut a piece away, so it would likely crack going over a bump. I would be happy if I were that vehicle's owner, knowing you saved me a substantial amount of money. Otherwise, I can see why this repair is seldom done. Ford priced the customer out of it.
I always suspect that the people who complain the loudest about doing that to a customer's car wouldn't hesitate to do it to their own, if it would save a few bucks.

I don't think the zip tie mod was necessary. The teeth/tabs in the top piece slot into the bottom piece and the key guide that you put on last helps keep it in place. I don't think any of those tabs were broken.
That being said, I 100% agree with cutting the plastic on top to get to the bolts.

Ray, you’re a brilliant mechanic and saving the customer money is never a bad thing. Aside from that, if you get away with it it’s always a good thing.

We use shortened bits and ratcheting wrenches all the time and you wouldn’t have to cut the plastic
2nd time I’ve watched this and I have to say that you worry me doing this to someone’s vehicle – how is it that you became such a sensible, brilliant mechanic. It upsets me to think that anyone would go the whole hog and charge an owner hundreds of pounds just to change those bushings

I have to add this why don't you mechanics and anyone else with a business have a plaque made up that says the Golden Rule and under that Do one to others as you would have them do unto you. I bet you get compliments and respect from your customers if you do. 🇺🇲

Well done Ray. Plastic trims that serve no purpose like that are a pain to deal with. I have resorted to a multi tool with a fine tooth blade or as suggested a Dremel. Great that you look after your customers.👍👏

I would have done that to save 3 minutes.
Unhook the shift indicator string and remove the 4 column support bolts. Drop column down, now you can get the 2 straps out. Not a single part of the dash has to come out. This is a 1 hour job including replacing the shift cable and PRNDL switch which are always bad once the shift sleeve components go bad.

The answer is if you don't know what holds it together, and it's not science, it's obviously magic.
Also you need to start saying that something will happen "theoretically."
You have to do what needs to be done, and after it all said and done, it will never been seen by the customer unless they watch this video. In the grand scheme of the construction of that truck, removing that bit of plastic does not effect it in any way!
Given that van is worth about $200, cutting the plastic to save them $500 is ok.

Nothing like a good pair of nippers! the hacking will never been seen by the customer, it will save the customer tons of cash, the problem will be solved and the customer will be as happy as a pig in a blanket. As for breaking the plastic, in a place like that.
Its saving work and money but I think the customer should be informed about it and have a choice. But that's just, my opinion. You are allowed to make some on the call decisions as a mechanic or while working on something that's necessary. But knowing this job and the fitting, I would have opted to ask the customer.
