In this video I have a look at a customers Chevy Impala that came in with the CEL on and a P0449 and a P0455. These are both really common codes to see on this vintage GM. A couple of quick checks and we know what the issue is!

All right folks Working on a 2011 Chevrolet with no hood prop apparently so we'll use our own. Lady states that money light is on. we're going to throw a battery main container on it. We got the altel hooked up.

We'll see what we have in it for a code or codes see. got her all Ided on the Alel here. We'll go and see what code it has is. was the engine light out when you drove it in? McCoy yeah was okay.

uh we'll just say has dual zone I don't know and we're just going to go right to the ECM All right Yep. EVAP System large leak detected all right invent Control Cite So it's a couple classic GM codes uh 4 449 for open circuit or a circuit problem in the canister vent valve and then if the canister vent valve doesn't work, you know it's stuck open. Uh, the system will interpret it as a a large leak. so pretty classic stuff.

Um, we've probably done videos on these before. We'll just keep going cuz we didn't know what we were going to have until until we knew what we were going to have, right? So we just want to look at a couple things here. I Want to see fuel tank pressure on see that 1 and 1/2 volts and it is. Um, all right.

that's all I Wanted to look at here so let's go back. We'll go into active test uh you can go ah aad and start get it up on the lift there McCoy Um, we're going to go to the uh uh canister vent valve or the vent solenoids. they have it listed here I Don't hear it kicking on back there so but we can see the short ground test. It shows it fault and the open test.

it shows it fault so likely just a bad uh vent valve there. So okay, let's get up in here and check it. They're pretty easy to get to on these cars. So right back here by the left rear tire.

this is the filler neck and then the canister V valve lives up here. Usually they're pretty Rusty uh underneath the plastic? Uh well. it's kind of difficult to see here, but let me take and unplug it. Actually, we let the car down a little bit.

make a little easier to reach here Infamous Red lock in there I Can move my light up in there, get our fingers behind it. All right? So there's our connector. Sometimes these connectors are green and corroded. this case, it isn't same.

Jam Full of holes or anything. Uh, so typically uh, one of these wires usually the pink or the red with white is a full-time power from a fuse. So we're going to lightly front probe this connector and if we stick this up body ground. Yep, there we go.

So we've got power back here. Okay, And then the computer ground side switches the solenoid so we'll lightly front probe that one. now. come over the scan tool, we'll turn the valve on.

Yep, it lights up the light and we turn it off. We can go on and off with it. so that's it. I Mean that's a pretty simple simple test.

Um, the canister vent valve was simply open circuited. So uh, we need a new cancer vent valve. The control from the PCM is good cuz we can light a quarter amp test light and that's pretty much all there is to do. Uh, you could always take and stick an OM meter.
If you don't have bir directional controls, you can make make sure that you have power back here and then stick your own meter across the coil of the solenoid. and I imagine it's probably like you know, 30 to 50 ohms somewhere in there. This one I imagine would be much higher than that, be open circuited. So what we'll do is, we'll get it out of there.

It's hooked to this Rusty bracket up here. We'll take this Bol out, hopefully take the whole bracket down where we can get to it. We'll follow that hose up and see where that unhooks off from the tank. It's interesting.

It looks like it has grease on it. Oh yeah, it's actually oh, that actually came unhooked. pretty easy. It's likely been replaced before.

Yeah, there's some kind of Grease or something on here. So these are a super, uh, common failure prone item here. especially in the Rust Belt Like I say, usually corrosion is what gets them rust out under the plastic. Yank that baby out of there there.

whoops. We just slid it off the bracket instead of taking the whole bracket down. Yeah, just seeing if the solenoid here was swollen. Nope.

Doesn't really look that old to be honest with you. So just for the sake of uh, the video. I Guess we can do a quick Mm check on this. Stick that on ohage.

we'll check leads. they're good. We'll just compare it to the new one. but I Imagine this is open circuited or very high resistance.

Get on these pins here. Come on there. we go there. it settle out.

so it is Point 800 Mega Ohms So we're Way Beyond the limits of what we should be like I Said I Would expect it to be you know, maybe around 50 ohms or so. but we're up in the mega Ohm scale so it is open circuited so that's that. Nap has come through for us yet again. So there's that.

open it up. there's that extra parts. Oh comes with a new bracket I was hoping it did. other bracket's pretty Rusty And then it comes with this jumper harness here.

Um, some of the older GMS use this style connector and then you would just plug this into the vehicle to go to this style. but uh, this car is already equipped with uh, that connector there. So now we can see what the resistance value of a good solenoid is. Maybe you guys could see that there? I'll just read it to you.

20 ohms. So 19.3 So 20 Ohms. All right. So if you're checking yours, you want to know what a good uh value is.

It's 20 Ohms. Uh. me and McCoy are going to get this swapped out. We just yanked it off the bracket because this bolt wasn't looking too healthy.

So we'll see if that bolt feels like it wants to turn. If it does, we'll swap the new backing on. If it doesn't, we'll use. the old rusty bracket bolt actually came loose.

We had to use a a Twist socket on it, but it came loose pretty easily. actually. All right. So we'll get a new 6 mm bolt to stick in there.
So there's our old bracket that the old in with the new. Make sure that looks like she got line up. She does. Sweet.

All right. we'll go get a new bolt for it. I've just gone ahead and put it on the bracket before we stick it up here. which is we can take and plug it in, have it on the bracket, and then technically got the scan tool here.

sorry about the bad lighting. Let's see now. we should be able to hear it click. All right.

So that's good. Slide The whole thing up there. We got our new 6 mm bolt. takes the infamous 10 mm socket.

stick that bad boy on there, grab our torque wrench torque at the factory specs. Of course there we are. We all heard it click. hook the hose up.

So one potential issue uh, after doing a vent valve and having a large leak coat is now it has the ability to run the leak test on the tank, check for small leaks, and and uh so on. What we our habit usually is to do is we'll close the vent valve. and technically it should start building pressure in the tank. So it's just like leaving a gas can out in the sun.

You know as it heats up, it's going to feel feels volatile. it's going to start building pressure. Uh, even though this kind of cold in the shop and uh, the car itself is is pretty cold and the fuel Tank's cold. but you can see we're still building a slight amount of pressure and then so if we let it sit here for a while it it'll continue to build but build really slow.

so this is a good indicator. This tells us that we likely don't have, you know, a leak in the EVAP system. It's not a foolproof method. Um, but it works pretty good.

So now we'll turn it off and it should go back to atmospheric pressure. Yep, and you see it vent back out. So uh, so that's a good sign. Um I'm going to let the lady take it and just uh run, you know, drive, cycle on.

and if it comes back with a you know with a leak code then we'll we'll Chase it Chase it down from there. But um, the way that this builds pressure, uh, that quickly just through um, you just natural uh expansion I would say we're we're more than likely good. All right folks, that's it. So large evap, leak, canister, vent, valve circuit code on your Chevy Impala Um, sorry for the repeats.

Uh, cuz like I said. I'm sure that we've done this before. um, but it's just part of life. That's how the shop works.

We never know what we're getting in. Um, and if you're wondering who McCoy is. so he's an intern here from a local high school. Uh, they have a program for uh, kids who are likely going to have you know, a blue collar job or a job in trades and they're going out and experiencing uh, different different types of trades for each quarter of school.

Um, but they're also pursuing, uh, higher academics to at school. So therefore, they're not going to like our local trade program that they have at the school. Say that makes sense. But anyhow, so he might be in a few videos here and there and uh, that's it.
questions, comments, concerns the ins. the Facebook you guys know what to do and just remember viewers. If I can do it, you can do it. Thanks for watching! Hey.

Hi Eric! Happy to see you supporting your local trade school! I love your videos simply because 1) your electronic/electric diagnostics are the best and 2) the cars you work on are in the same shape those I work on, (I’m a pencil pusher by day, but a week-end wrench monkey and the go-to guy for my family crusted mobile heap of metal) being in the Montreal region – probably an even worst rust belt than you!

I have aquick question re. the model of theAutel scanner you are using. I remember you either did a video Or put the link on the model in previous video, but could not find it. Yours is probably out of my price point for a DYI guy, but it will be a good benchmark to compare with sub $1,000 bi-directional scan tools available on the market today, at least on the feature side… Considering that my Jeep is going on 5 years (low mileage, though – about 50k miles) and my wife’s 2018 Outlander going on 100,000 miles and the fact that we have not found any great independent mechanic in our area, being at least able to pinpoint a problem would be a great asset against some places’ part cannons. I currently use a Bluedriver OBDII reader, and it does a fairly good job, but not being bi-directional limits how deep I can pinpoint issues…

Wow, what an opportunity for the young fellow! I wonder if he realizes he is learning from the best? Ego is what happens when you stop learning, the best teachers are still learning. Much of the knowledge I still have was passed down to me and I was fortunate that i didn't have to learn all of those mistakes myself, well, except for the ego part.

Excellent vocational program you have in your local community. We need less college edgeumacated folks and more young adults who know how to repair and build….. (spelling error purposely placed within)

    I like NAPA best.
Recently I had gotten a Coil for a 5.3 GM from Auto clone .
Turned out someone switched the part in box with another cheap Chinese coil off Amaclone and returned fake part back to store which I ended up with .
Auto clone told me this is a common issue now

I also had a counterfeit NGK iridium go bad .

Beware and double check parts .

    Excellent channel πŸ‘
