Done 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe with a 5.3 liter V8 and a 6l80 transmission over on the bench. Customer stated vibration confirmed after a test drive I think it was a torque converted Vibe I Went to pull it out to put a new torque converter in it. decided to go beyond the Comfort level and inspect the pump. Went to take it apart.
Ended up pulling the drums out by accident because I did not follow the proper order of operations. Spent about an hour finagling this thing back together. My error that I made was this turbine shaft seal right here I Did not realize I had to pull that O-ring off in order to get the bell housing off when I pulled that O-ring or when I pulled the bell housing, it took the first drum and this input shaft out with it and I spent some time scratching my head trying to figure out what to do next. Got it back together, but it was a quite stressful and definitely a learning experience.
I work on Transmissions but I did not know….. okay
Ford’s GM Chrysler Jeep Dodge are garbage you might as well buy a Toyota or Honda or a Kia at least their vehicles are much better made with better quality
Lesson learned. You gain that much more knowledge. Largest club ever 😂
The real answer is a trans retune. They're tuned to demand PWM converter lockup in all gears (with even worse tables in DoD). Freeing up the trans in 1st-4th and a firmer ramp rate in 5th 6th is the fix.
(Obviously if hard parts are hurt, replace. but this tune fix is difference between a repair and solution)
Best way to learn, IMO!
tay hoe
that was one tough o-ring
And NEVER BUY the first few gens of any CTV trans 😢give them a few more years .
There not as complex as they look , I’ve built plenty of GM trans nothing that new I’m retired I was good with the 700r4 and newer 4l60 ,E and 4l80 and 85,E . I did loads of dodge too there all similar but different , step by step assembly .
Skilled mechanics are not cheap and cheap mechanics are not skilled. Leave it alone if you don't know what you're doing
Careful installing those 6l80 and 6l90 converters they get cocked really easily and will destroy the seal or worse the pump when you install it, and the worst part about it is the converter will be free but you won’t know it’s ducked up until you fill it and nothing sucks down
Looks like you had tranny problems I hope you didn’t misgender it
Thank god you don’t work on my cars.
This is how every unit goes the first time. We have all been there
Not going to this shop
Tay ho?
if you have tear down questions go watch any video on precision transmission's page
OMG Been there done that.
Luv ya Ray keep on keepen on.
That is the most expensive tranny to rebuild, twice the price of my 3x Cummins 48re ram 2500, this Chevy models if the torque converter goes it usually takes the front pump w it, minimum fix amount for this was 2400 for me. The front pump torque converter and new clutches and plates. Just Oem basics that is
Tans guy ✊✊✊
I wonder if he can comfortably say he did put it back together accurately. Being, that he didn't know what he was doing in the first place. Well, I guess we will find out in the future. You better vlog it if you did infact screw it all up pal. Good luck.
Hope you didn't charge the customer for your mistake 🤔
Imaging knowing what you are doing and being qualified for the repair you are charging the customer for. Another fine example of Ray's customers paying for his training!
Read the instructions
And of course the customer got charged for the extra time and parts….
Trial n error is what makes a Master Automotive Technician..but it's only because u just need more experience working on Transmissions…After Graduation, AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN 💪 i went str8 to work for a transmission shop n learned the rest so don't worry because ur on ur way
That background music is trash
If this video was filmed a oittle differently the comment section would be filled with "This is why I do my own work"
Let the transmission guy do it.
Chevrolet tay ho? Jaja 😂
Those trans are garbage
But you charged the customer for labor didn't you……
So, did you charge the customer for your mistakes and ignorance???? Or are you part of the 0.000001% of honest mechanics?
You're a gimp for experimenting with other people's cars! If you don't know what you're doing, SAY SO! Let them take the car to a transmission expert!
GM keeps mechanics busy
Tay-ho😂
i would be very surprised if that pump is not worn out
That’s how you learn sometimes
Just wondering how much your learning experience cost your valued customer 😂😂😂
As an Suburban owner, ill tell you that transmission is absolutely shit.
You want to use it then have it actually built.
Monster Transmission in Florida is the go to.
Warranty and all.
Don't touch that thing?
Tay-ho😂
I can see the wear on the PR Valve from here….
I'd leve tranies tu tha specialists-save yorslf tha headakes & tha stress😰
Do the rear main seal while your in there. They will thank youn
We took plenty apart in school, I never did one outside school, the instructor said don't concern yourself with the complexity, just put it together correctly and it will work.
felt this way about the 4t65e that was in my GranPrix..
Dam O-Ring, Sure F___ED your day for awhile. 😮 😊
6l80 torque converter like dumping windings and filling unit with metal
And then charged the customer for the extra time to fix his own mistake.
I don’t understand how Auto Trans work
Ray can fixit, eventually, not the guy you want doing diags.
Shit happens. It's not if but when. At least you fixed it!
Dropping clutch packs without the right Orientaion clocking tool and body mount sure can be a pain some people just aren't capable of even doing it.
All other shops in this situation: You need a whole new transmission! Honest mechanics are white unicorns. God bless this man.
Cah-No or ta-hoo? Can't have both.
WE are always learning.
If I never rebuild a transmission that's fine with me, ill take em out and replace em but thats as far as I wanna go. I'll do valve bodies and tc's but that's it
Did the 2016 Tahoe transmission (6l80)work??
Thanks for the tip bro. I'm sure it will help me someday as I'm always working on vehicles from time to time.
Good job Becky
Richard from the old Precision Transmission in Amarillo TX would have showed you that one. He's now at "Richard &Theresa Educational Transmission Videos"…I think the old videos are still over at the defunct "Precision Transmission" channel
Those torque converter ALL fail. Only recourse is the upgraded billet one. DO NOT OUT A FACTORY CONVERTER BACK IN. Also, I would be Leary to reuse that case with all that crap in the pump now.
It's always the torque converter shudder with these turds.
Tae hoe? Don't be dumb
Exact reason I talk to and vet whoever works on my truck.
Tehhoe😂
I bet it was stressful
Dis you call it a Tae hoe? 😂
Pulled a LC9 out of an avalanche that had blow, the motor grenaded and sheared the bellhousing.
I replaced the bell housing and reassembled everything in the truck on the floor.
Talk about getting in over my head and stress to the max 🙃
“Taihoe”
Tay ho?
Ta-Ho
Ta’h’oe ta’y’hoe.
TAYHOE?
Honestly somedays i wish werent a learning experience and to just go right
That music is screwing up your thinking process . Get some real music .
Dang you saved that Tayhoe
No wonder this guy got fired, he doesn't know what he is doing.
Why the stupid monkey 🐒 music?
Tay- hoe 😂😂😂
If the pan had debris in it, it needs a pump assembly, valve bodies, and could need the 456 hub.
Jesus Christ my man, there are peices in them things that require replacing once opened…poor customer
Glad you got it back together without and costs to you other than time. It could have been worst! Now go make some money!
Making mistakes has been one of the greatest learning tools in my life. Making mistakes caused me to have to walk paths, dig deeper than I would have if I did things properly. Now I have greater understanding of many things in life due to being an idiot.
Cool those darn tacos are junk. Just get another one.
My mom just recently got ripped off on a 2017 tahoe from the chevy dealership. Out of 8-9 months of ownership its been broke down or in the shop for 5-6 months total so far. Shes paying for extended warranties but they are giving her a hard time and wont fix the fuel pump and transmission. It has been one thing after another, battery within first week, the alternator, the lifters, I think the rear diff, sensors for the lane assist if I'm not mistaken, and now the fuel pump and transmission. They tried telling her they would take it back and give her something else, had her drive almost an hour to them and once she got there said they needed 10k for the trade in. So now shes paying 600$ a month for something she cant drive.
I was jet engine specialist and we had to be able to teardown and rebuild them. CFM56'S. Couldn't believe what I was seeing first time I had to do maintenance on. Huge pieces of insane engineering.
Could be worse, could be a 4L60 😂
It’s French Swiss trash, what you expect….American? And yeah, Chevy is French Swiss.
Tayhoe
They have whole trans shops that work on only these. Theres a reason and nice work figuring it out.
Bowtie junk
I used to re cut those shafts your find just buy a new shaft. I can send you to my old job they sell parts of the line. You can repolish and spot you scratched
I would avoid transmission work from now on.
Lol white people and there American garbage company vehicles lol
so I don't like mouthing mechanics but what are you doing messing with a transmission if you have no idea about that O ring like wow hope you don't charge them for how long you took that was all on you
Didn't have that issue with the 5-speed manual transmission when I did my clutch on my Fozzie a few weeks ago.
I don't like automatic transmissions.
Who paid for the extra lab😢r Ray?
Still want to rip one apart? I'm down to show you if you got one laying around
