Stupid question maybe but hoping to get any feedback I can
Bought a 2002 Jeep Liberty (202K for basically (Free)) because person doesn't want to deal with it.
3.7L 4X4 Sport – Owner described oil burn, Valve cover clearly leaking… Pools on the ground where it was always parked, already easy warning sign but I like a challenge.
On Idle fairly rough… and starting was pretty rough… said starter was replaced. Charged battery while cleaning car, did not improve start.

My thoughts and what I plan to do:
(Air) – engine and Interior (for smell, this vehicle was a bit dank as would be from the molded on scum on the driver seat (still don't know what that is, other than coagulated farts)) …. Air filter was plenty new so I didn't bother replacing (Will soon), cabin filter may have been original, and it was absolutely caked in dirt needed to be replaced ages ago…. surprised it didn't break anything (replaced). This is what I intend to do below (with info from previous owner) with info:
(Oil) – just using regular oil it requires for now and filter
    (Spark) – New NGK Nitro V-Power – 6, – New Ignition coils OEM grade…
(Ignition) – Battery new within 4 months – Charged fully, and battery tested = Pass
(Engine) – PCV because of oil loss first and because its cheap…., crank, cam, and throttle position sensor as well.. because $100 to save thousands on and engine. I intend to replace the valve cover gaskets on the both sides.
(Suspension) – Apparently all front end work has been done (CV, Boot, bearings, shaft, tie rods, at least upper control arms) will look at back if it become a problem to replace lower control arms, why he didn't do both… beyond me… and will look into whatever it needs otherwise.
(Exhaust) – clear leak that I can hear… havn't look'd under car and don't want to. Exhaust problem can be kids problem not mine (our state has no checks and you can run straight pipes at over 90db if you kiss the mayor and sheriff's ass or get away with it no matter what depends who you are in the city.
(Body) – all cosmetic but would like to fix some of them eventually. Just the front bumper and the back safety bumper.
Tires need replaced regardless.. two of the back tires are showing threads and one tire is a different size from all the others… this whole vehicle screams save me…
(If you have any suggestions please pm me or write hear I would truly appreciate it.) Especially specific 02 jeep liberty answers please!!

edit : 3 tires are 225/70/16 one is 235/70/16… the 235 is on the front passenger (literally makes me shudder who put that on and was okay with that…) then again it is just wider but whyyyyy…..

    Thank you!

PLEASE HELP ME, I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty sport 4×4 3.7L v6. I was driving down the road and when it came to a stop at a stoplight the jeep shut off i tried cranking it and no crank, then i cranked it whiling giving it gas and i got it started but it ran extremely rough but i managed to get it into a gas station parking lot and shut it off. I had it towed home and i started doing research. First thing i did was replace the cam sensor and crank sensor along with cleaned the throttle body and IACV. I got finished and tried to start it and got nothing at all. It simply turns over but will not start, I cannot even get it to start when giving it gas or anything. I tried to test to see if it was getting spark and it appears i am not getting spark at coil. I checked the ASD relay and its fine. I checked pressure at fuel rail and it appears i have fuel pressure. Any suggestions please would be greatly appreciated. I understand its hard to help someone without actually seeing the vehicle or anything but i am in desperate need of help its my only vehicle. Anything please. Thanks

I don't get why everyone craps on chrysler vehicles. I had chevy silverado 2500 trucks for business fleet vehicles. They were in the shop so often that I had to hire a full time mechanic to fix them. Switched to Ram 2500 and had to lay off my mechanic as they never have problems. I personally have a 2011 Challenger a 2002 Ram 1500 and had a 1999 Intrepid and a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I also have a 2007 Suburban that I got 12/2007. The maintenance log for my Suburban has 140 entries from when I started keeping good records in 2013. My Challenger, Ram 1500, Intrepid and Grand Cherokee have a combined total of only 60 entries, almost all oil changes and new tires. I have friends who had honda and toyota vehicles when they were younger because their parents insisted they were the best quality. They all had nothing but problems from them and now drive dodge and jeep vehicles and never have any issues. My parent's have had fords and chevys and have had numerous issues with them. Switched to Dodge and have had 0 issues. The crappy chryslers of the 70s and 80s are long gone…Get over it!

I have a 08 Jeep Liberty , for the last month the vehicle starts at the beginning of the day but then later it hesitates , i can hear the engine cranking , all lights on dash board, after several attempts will start, I took it to the local Jeep dealer the mechanic just ask me to pick up because they could not replicate issue, however the fist day i got it back same problem happens, any reasons why this is happening?

I know its a few years since this video has been put out, but I have a theory on the burn coil. Does the crank shaft position sensor is send the signal to the PCM on when to spark the ignitor? If it did, key on and a bad sensor, could it have been sending a signal for that one coil to fire and since it was already going bad, (shorting to ground) it just took all that voltage and release the smoke demons! 🙂 just thinking out loud. great video leaning a lot! Thanks!

My wife had a 2004 jeep grande cherokee and I vowed to never by another jeep/chrysler ever again. That was the biggest pos i've ever worked on. From oil leaks, electrical wiring and then over heating. 2014 rolls around and sales man assured me the quality has improved over the years, we now own a town and country… Its another pos. Its had o2 check engine codes. Oil leak from the oil cooler housing that was prone to that year. It left my wife stranded another time but then it ran fine when I showed up to pick them up. 2 faulty mopar batteries within 4 years. All this under 70k miles. My advice, stay away from chrysler/jeeps

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tanks critters and urban homesteading says:

Hooking up a set of cables in reverse will fry the igniting system in those jeeps.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tanks critters and urban homesteading says:

My commander uses ngk from the factory. However, if you get the wrong ones with too low of a resistor it will melt coils.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Big Bear Venom says:

The coil was powered possibly because it was in position to fire in it's cycle and the others weren't but apparently the coil was bad and you were the lucky one to discover it.

Wow! That sounds like another short happening! While you were saving the waveform to me it sounded like the engine was slowly losing RPMs. I don't know if it's true but that's what it seemed like to me

I'm just starting this video, but I'm going to guess bad PCM? Annnnnnd it is a Chrysler product. Lol

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mudmanrv says:

I know this is an older video but a thought on the key on coil fire – if the crank sensor was shorted and not working – to where the engine died, maybe – that happened when coil 4 was on the fire trigger in the ecm. That could possibly explain why the coil appeared energized when you were doing the key on charging. just a thought.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jon Teesdale says:

Dodge, mopar, Jeep crap… go figure.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nite Flyer says:

so you are saying that there is no real explanation for the coil melt down… ECU has been proved control and the ASD relay has been proved… is it possible that there was a stray audio or backup cam install that faulted the ECU? just curious… what in the "finer"… Eric… you Sir are a professional Tech…

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Rodriguez says:

I have a 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee with codes P0480 and P0481 just started today. What do you think is wrong ?

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matt Maryan says:

Interesting that the same circuits – injectors, coils, CPS work in the same circuits or inline with the wire diagrams that the coil shorting could have taken out the Crankshaft position sensor? All those ignition components are working simultaneously together.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars earthstewardude says:

you should include what year the vehicle is in your title… sucks doing a search on my 2005 jeep liberty and getting other years.

I run NGK PLUGS in my 4.0 when I could find them, if not champion copper. Had the NAPA GUY SAY THE SAME THING YOU DID, NGK'S IN A JEEP ? Yes they run better & no need for anti seize.
