In this video I swap out the starter on my 2013 John Deere 5055E that has a failed solenoid. This thing has cranked over slow for a few years and now it's time to fix it right.

Of course it started at the beginning of the video. That's because you wanted to show us the problem.
Sounds much better from the beginning of the vid
Nothing runs like a deer! ………….. Or ………….. A deer doesn't run at all after it's been munching on Mr. O's corn.
Don't have children but I do have family and family friends that like to use my tools and either not put them back, leave them out in the rain, break them and not say shit or straight up take them…. No clue how much i have paid to replace the tools.
Ok, got a weird thing. I have been subscribed for a long time. Just noticed that I am not subscribed. Youtube is doing tricks again.
Anyways, great video.
That tractor is so clean.
You have children and whatever you are looking for is in the lawn. Somewhere.
Jeez hes got time to grow a whole damn corny field too?!? Fuk sake man.. and hes got what 3 littlins running around doing their stinky teenager stuff.. dont see how somebody can have the energy without a good supply of go juice.. and itd take a little bit of go juice to keep flippin that flop…
There's a dog and a tractor and it's in NY I was confused if this was a Camarata video on the wrong channel
Good to see a little variety… and some of the homestead. Good stuff!!
You're a vegetarian once removed. Steak salads FTW.
That's a well calibrated torque wrench there – available from your online store no doubt, but I'm sure they sell out fast due to their exceedingly low price point.
A couple cents of baking soda dissolved in a little water will make that battery corrosion disappear in a couple of minutes. Just rinse the thing off with clean water, and if you are fancy put some grease or patented battery terminal protector on afterward.
Hi, Mr. O. Turning corn into meat is a good trick. Don't forget to share that! Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!
This video was so useful and well done. I have a 2016 5055E and my starter finally crapped out. Sounded like yours when you started it before you changed it. Again very well done with no camera jiggle and audio was good as well. Very clear. Thanks
Can you have the same starter problem with a car?? It sounds alot like what my car is doing
Beautiful dogs Mr.O , I also had a sheperd mix named Sheba. Love em like family.
My first experience of someone jumping a starter, when I first started at a shop as a oil lube tech way back when, a tech had a truck in his bay, an early 90โs F150 and the shifter was messed up and the car was in reverse, him and a manager were doing something on the car and I remember the manger saying โhere just give me a screwdriverโ, well he jumped the starter and immediately the tires squealed and the car shot backwards out the bay, the two of them tried hanging onto the bumper with utter failure, one of the other guys chased it out of the shop and tried reaching through the window and failed, the trucked ended up smashing right into the front bumper of the tech that was working on it who had his truck parked out back. Definitely gave me an early experience of making sure you know damn well what youโre doing and donโt get sloppy lol
Have you ever found yourself making the torque wrench click, click sound on anything like the tooth paste cap.
Iโm surprised you can make a DIY repair on a John Deere without a visit from a โfactory trainedโ technician!
Mmmm corn fed venison. Finer things my friend. Finer things.
Hi ERICOFARMER, and the lovely Mrs. O. I worked on forklifts for a while and the had alot of electrical parts that were the same as GM and some Fords but I couldn't believe how much more expensive (mark up) they are (rip off).
Electrolyte level low; acid concentration goes up; crusties form to lower the concentration. I'd check the electrolyte levels in the cells before a plate gets exposed and the battery's junk.
You are crazy aaaaaaaaaand you have children!
i have rules about being in seat before starting ford 8 n ran over both my legs
Given JD's right to repair stance, I'm surprised you can repair it. lol
Hi ERICOFARMER and the lovely Mrs. O , pretty well rounded aren't ya. They are all vehicles right! It's good to do something to make your brain change up every once in a while. I've always thought that auto mechanics are the most well rounded. It's the hands thing I believe ! Great channel Os!
mechanics cars are like contractors houses.
touchรฉ.
I see NAPA filters and battery. Bastards still not a sponsor ๐ก
I noticed that the JD battery hold down is the same dippy setup I have on my 24 year old Cub Cadet. I never liked that hold down arrangement because it always looks like it could slip and short the battery. I eventually replaced my hold down with a piece of 1×2 board and some threaded rod to pull down instead of from the side.
When you mentioned the 4 volt drop across the solenoid and the symptoms of it sometimes taking several tries before the starter would work my mind went back to my 72 Olds Cutlass. About a month after I got it I started having the old hard start issue with the starter not cranking until you tried it 2 or 3 times. When I went to take it off to fix it I saw the nightmare that was going to happen if I started taking the exhaust pipe off so I could get the starter out of the tight spot it was in. So I tried the old take the battery cable off, loosen the back nut on the battery bolt on the solenoid and rotate it half a turn, then put it back together. It worked. I never had another problem out of that starter. After the car was hit in two separate accidents and totaled, I pulled the engine and transmission to put in a 67 Ford pickup. My concern about pulling the exhaust pipe was confirmed but having the engine out made getting the broken studs out much easier. That 350 Rocket engine made that pickup a nightmare to drive. The only person who never had any problem driving it was my very petite wife. I had it turn around in the road a few times unintentionally before I got the hang of driving it and one guy at a tire shop nearly ran through the shop with it. If you didn't know what it would do it would take off like a bat out of well you know what I mean.
Wrenching in a white shirtโฆ.brave man!
Like your safety device for the loader lol
Car Repair Shop and a Farm. I've seen you slip and slide around in the vehicle but thought it was random land. Nice piece of property there Mr O. Loving that the Deer and feeding themselves and feeding you. You could do with an at Home Channel like Ray with everything you got going on at the Homestead especially with hunting season and off roading. But then again when would you get some down time just to relax or are you on the go every working hour? You have such a way of explaining and are entertaining to watch. One extra thing I get from the channel which is a biggy for me is an understanding of how and why things fail and how you replace them. This gives me a bit more knowledge when I book in for a repair. Thanks for sharing Mr O.
Outdoor Eric O, blowing dusty nuts. I want moar. How about a revival?
not quite as high as an elephant's eye
Awesome quote: "Either I'm going crazy, or I have children…!"
๐
Did you wash it afterwards. It's a bit dirty and needs a good detail and ceramic coating. Only kidding LOL. Aww we got too see your husky. Mine is snoozing as she went on a really big hike and has the biggest smile. Looks like an nice easy engine to work on.
Which Deer do you mean John Deer or Deer animal? LOL ๐ฆor๐? Nice video, I also enjoy seeing you work on the home projects. Maybe it is that you are more relaxed not sure. It must be fun to have that much land at times. I am sure having that much land has downsides also. Great show of preventative maintenance. May God bless you and your family!!! Thanks for doing all of these videos. I like your methods you take to remove rusted fasteners. I am taking notes for the day I will need to work on those suspension bolts here in the northern areas. Do you remove the brake pad pins on your Tundra once a year and wire brush them to keep them freed up? I ask because I just replaced both front calipers this year. Thank YOU very much!!!!!
Loved the video. Glad to see a little change up from the norm. How about a tour of your property? How much land do you have?
How many hours on the tractor and it needs a starter?
Yes, probably going crazy!
Yes, you have children!
That looks like the same dipstick that John Deere has been using since the early 70,s on the 20 series utility tractors like a 1520 or 2030 just to list a few
No brake cleaner? No Fluid Film? What the hell channel is this?
I love the loader safety lockout on the houseโฆ.smooth move! Nice work as always.
Wow, You have a beautiful farm. I guess the deer love you, lol. Awesome great video thanks for sharing. It was a pleasant change to watch you work on the John Deer. I always hit the like button. Sometimes I don't comment but I'm always watching your videos and hitting the like button. Stay well & safe my friend.
Either at home or in the shop,…… it would not be a South Main Auto video without an air compressor firing up in the background.
Corn fed deer! Mmmmmm
Shame shame going non-OEM! As someone that just dropped an obscene amount of money on green hay roller parts today, I completely understand. I NEVER buy JD starters for any of my green stuff. They are just too proud of those suckers. If I have to replace an aftermarket starter 4 times for every OEM starter, I am still money ahead. Now if that tractor was a mid 90โs 5400, it might be a different story. That was the only starter swap Iโve ever done that involved and air hammer. Even with all of the right tools, decades of experience and help from someone with half a century of experience, that was the worst starter job of my life! Heck, splitting the dang tractor in half to install new clutches was much easier than the starter swap. Only had to do it once in 25yrs though. I still say it was the best small tractor ever made.
Nice torque wrench
Many a time on cars, trucks, or heavy equipment you have that darn lower starter bolt or nut you can't see and it's a blind install at a strange angle. Joy when you get the threads engaged and it goes on smoothly or end of the day and your hand cramps up and you can't even withdraw for a while. Of course that never happens๐ Fun video!
I got a new starter for my JD riding mower same brand DB electric from Amazon and so far is working nicely. much less $
Where's the Red Farmall?
Eric oooo..
Love the vid.
Got my NY tags ordered.
Let me know if ya need ammo…

SALUDOS DE ECUADOR EXELENTE
When I work on my equipment in the dirt, grass etc I put a large piece of cardboard on the ground
so if (when) I drop something I dont have to go fishing….
Farmer Green Jeans…..
Clickety click all torqued up. ๐คฃ๐๐
Where's the "M". I'm sure it was a video working on it that led me to this channel.
A nice change of scenery. I try to remember to put cardboard or tarp down before I tackle something like that. Somehow I always manage to drop something small on the ground.
Enjoyed going for a "Shake" on the ole JD. Great as always.
Has it been repainted,i see the overspray everywhere or is that how it comes.
I donโt own a tractor, so FF to watch the dogs.
Glad to hear youโre keeping the old one. Youโll figure out a way to get a new solenoid or clean up the contacts and keep it as a spare.
Nice!
Kikass man. ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐บ๐ธ
I'm surprised you didn't have to take it to the Deere stealership to have the computer programmed to "recognize" the starter. That seems like something they'd do.
She wants you to play ball.
I have a 5075E and I always wondered about the engine knocking sound. It's different than my 6.7 Cummings and my 3 cylinder Kubota, but your tractor sounds just like mine so I guess I'm okay
Dog breath, crickets, green acres and the produce๐ฅฉ section.
When Iโm working on my own car on a Saturday morning, I find myself saying โcome on babyโ.
Ready for the winter now
Sweet corn to sweet venison not a bad Idea.
That Harbor Freight air ratchet is a really good buy. Iโve had mine over 5 years now with daily use and zero problems
I can't hardly wait to sit in a stand good luck to you and Mrs O
A farmer and a deer hunter and a mechanic! My word you got it going on fella! Thanks for a very good video.
Hope you got a safety bar on those lift arms Mister. Well done pal.

Thanks again when I try to explain Trouble shooting to people you are my Gold Standard.
Starters on my 57 case 310 track loader are a breeze, but I'm dreading the day I have to replace one on my 04 komatsu d20p. Thanks Mr O
South Main Tractor Repair LLC…. New series….
God bless you. Erick. En your family ๐๐
So far I like this video. I haven't seen Mrs o yet. You haven't said anything about you violating the right to a pair of rules set forth by Ford tractor company you're not supposed to do this you're supposed to hire this out to a Ford contractor of course right to repair doesn't apply to Ford tractors remember ding dong LOL much love to you from the fat guy
Turning the corn into meat! What a concept. Lol
Did a brake job on one wheel Denali Yukon holy crap that's big parts. Metal on metal pads so full replacement one and a half cans of brake clean ,is that about right??
Nice!! We will take care of them in a few months!! ah yeah!
I use Baking Soda to clean the battery contacts and battery box. A rinse to flush away an residue.
A little Lithium grease on the terminals and youโre good to go.
Nice tractor Eric
I'm disappointed, no fluid film on the mating surfaces ๐
All my food is vegan too…as in the critters only eating veggies…then me eating the critters ๐
This has got to be the cleanest install on a tractor that's in a field. He had the right tools. Even the right parts. And, he had rubber gloves. Amazing.
Was it me or did the torque wrench sound a little out of tune ?
Up here in my part of the People's Republic it isn't common to see any of these little plots. I was down in your neck of the woods flying gliders a couple years ago and it took me a couple three four looks to figure out why I kept seeing these tiny little cornfields in the woods at the top of the hills. I catch on slow. Hope you enjoy the end of summer!
Should have given ZK Mastertech a call! He does road trips.
what a relief to be able to work on something almost old school without the toys to analyze an onboard black box……..another great video but you ever let Vanessa drive it? i'm betting she thinks your tractor is sexy….
Beautiful dogโs!
I'm glad to see that Eric O is a normal guy at home and has a cheap-ass compressor like the rest of us.
Mr. O had a farm Ee i ee i o
