In this video I show one of the very strong points of the OTC Evolve and the way they handle their Mode 6 data. Especially on older Fords when you are trying to track down a misfire. Really nice feature in my opinion.

Will this give me the enhanced mode 6 in layman's terms on a Honda? I can feel a nagging misfire at cruising speed that goes away above 70 miles per hour. Have been learning much about Diagnostics from your channel and others. Looking to buy a capable scan tool very soon. Also is there such a thing as a scanner and scope all-in-one?
How does otc evolve compare to the bosch 625?
Nice video. Would you recommend the Evolve to a mid-level tech trying to get promoted and earn more money? Our shop has a Snap On scanner running on Windows XP, which is a joke in 2020. Looking at the manual and bidirectional control list for the Evolve, it looks like a very powerful tool. My only concern is hardware performance. Some reviews say it takes forever to boot up and flip through menus, like the Bravo 3.0 software is demanding too much from the processor and RAM.
Eric, ds 708 and maxisys 908 both show power balance, at least they do on my 03 and 05 f250 6.0 diesel.
Excellent info!
The snap o. Has the best power Balance test for Fords cause numbers are easier easier then looking at a graph
3k uk no way keep it.
Great info sir. Thanks Dr. O!
says plugs plugs plugs, plugs plugs plugs. probably needed them by 50K if that, even with the magical long life things. go figure
My guess is people won’t be wanting to purchase multiple scanners but are looking for what’s going to give the most Snap ,AUTEL , OTC etc. can’t expect out or anyone to endorse one though .
"More accommodating", is the term you are looking for
Can you loan me a J 22635 tool and tell me how to use it on my steering column pin removal 1991 corvette. THANKs
TOOLS!
I have an OTC Genisys touch that was cleaned out and has the most current update and I love it probably one of my favorite scanners. I know everyone says The Encore and evolve is a whole lot better but I really like the way they're laid out, it is simplified easy to read and understand.
I saw an article about you in a magazine at work Friday all the way down in Alabama!
I'm sure you get tons of questions, but I have an electrical issue that neither I nor the transmission shop can figure out. Any chance I can email you? Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.
never heard of the term fishbite misfire but i can understand what you mean.
Is that OTC powered by Bosch?
Could you do more Toyota 4Runner repair 4th generation and 5th generation
A little dear for DIY work, $3,000. For a pro, it's another tool for the box.
This is very cool though it's all relative to me since I didn't any diagnostic at the shop i used to work and they one had one scanner it was an OTC Genesis
I can't comment on the accuracy or the V10 but I can say that even my entry level Autel will do power balance test on my Ford 5.4 3v. As always thanks for the insight.
So, every day I get home after working on vehicles all day. I watch South Main Auto on youtube! I have learned so much about proving an auto repair; it's fantastic! Thank you, Eric. I think you give mechanics a good education in how automotive repairs should be completed. I've never seen anyone as good with diagnostic equipment than you. I truly think you have one of the best channels on youtube. I hope you continue to teach a lot of mechanics out there who want to learn. I'm learning to provide better information to customers and, my boss. You don't "need" ASE or all of these certifications in the industry. You "want" people like Eric who is teaching or showing his technique to repair a vehicle. Well done, SMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A+++!
My autel maxisys elite works good for misfire data and power balance for Ford..
Good video Eric O
Is it possible that this truck's problem is being caused by that thing hanging out of the cigarette lighter? That's a tuning device, right?
For $99, Blue Driver gives you codes, clear codes, live data, smog check/IM Readiness, and interpreted Mode 6. Not bidirectional but at that price you wouldn't expect that.
Does the E450 V10 still have Mode 6 Data?
Fair and balanced like some good news reporting company why thank you!
ford has a training video for ids mode6 because it is confusing lol
Fish bites and lots of abbreviations. Please try to avoid too much jargon. This is the first time I have had to complain. All your other videos are so down to earth and totally enjoyable.
Thanks for the video.
Nice. Mode 6 is under used so much. Great points you made, and nice that you mentioned the values that need to be met before a failure shows up. I am curious if the Encore has the same software or not.
Here is some un-useful information. This video was recorded on January 8, 2019.
V10 Ford engines hairline cracked coils causing intermittent misfires extremely common. You gotta really inspect the coils sometimes to find the hairline cracks, until they crack bigger of course causing more misfires.
It often surprises me how infrequently IT coding professionals take the time to understand their customers' work flow. If they did, they would design software to be much more intuitive. Ultimately this means a better product that will quickly rise to the top, and stay there for years.
Eric great informative video but would you say it performs as well say on Hondas or did you use Ford because of thats the vehicle you had available? Also, AESwave has a great book that you recommended a while back that explains all the different modes in detail. I personally find it very helpful. Eric do you still have SMA decals to purchase? Thanks for your time and dedication.❤️️
Power balance is not that great on the Launch either… depending on the year of the vehicle though.
Same goes with the relative compression test… so far 99 and earlier, these features don't work
Eric,
Great video – very good explanations. I always learn from you!
SMA#1
God bless
Paul
Ah, yes. Pete Meier at Motor Age (The Trainer) is right up at the top of my list of favorites.
good stuff as usual…..what is ur recommendation on a j2534 interface 🙂
So many scan tools, so little money. If one includes the cost of updates, having multiple scan tools is very expensive.
V10 and 6 speed manual, bet that pulls nice
It's Technical and it's Boring.
Thank you for the video!
Meanwhile the same losers keep giving a "thumbs down" on great videos….
Thanks for the links to Pete's trainer series. I missed those.
Thanks Eric!!
Also…if I remember from my Ford stealership days…otc makes rotunda tools…which are the Ford factory special tools…so maybe otc has their mits in the IDS software too which would explain the similarities
