Hey there Mr. O! Thanks for this video. I know I'm a little late to this party (like 4 years), but it appears I'll be doing this with my son on his NB. I was glad to see you had done one of these cars. I hope we don't have the seized bolt issue you got to enjoy, as we live down South, and we don't have the salt stuff to have to deal with.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Bentley says:

You really earned your money on this one Mr O. I'd have taken it out and put it in a crusher well before now. But that is why you are an expert mechanic and I'm not. Kudos to you and thanks for sharing.

One guy said he doubles the time rate, I think that is in order and add 20% for aggravation. That is a nightmare to do.

For a little car what a pain this clutch job is. I have done 5.0 Mustang jobs so much faster. and I'm totally not impressed with how the starter is bolted on.

Remember, did a clutch on a corolla in the 70,s 100 miles from home, at night, in a parking lot, with 1/10th of the tools. No alinement tool, one jack, one flashlight, but none of these problems. It work however 😌

I've been watching this Miata new clutch video series, as a 2003 Miata owner I think I have learned that there is no way I want to do this in my driveway. Next time I'm in NY I'll give Eric some work…….LOL…

One of the more difficult clutch jobs and the car isn’t even crusty. Got to thank all those wonderful engineers for coming up with that design.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Gary says:

I think the original nuts are nylocs. As they get hot they seize onto the bolt. I think Mazda assumes you'll just snap them off and replace them.

The problem with my dad was I understood mech a little better. One day we had put a pump on the old hand pump well. The motor was turning the pump backwards. I said "hey dad just put a figure 8 in the v belt and it will turn the right way". He says "are you sure"? I was 9 and he was 45 and I said do it it will work. He did and it did. He always asked me after that if he got stuck putting something back together and he learned to trust me. He stopped beating me after that. Back in the 50's.

I remember Mazda was in partnership with Ford before or during the design of the Miata. My 84 Mazda B2000 was the twin of the Ford Courier PU with Ford offering the 2300/2600? Pinto engine option.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MetalTeamster says:

" Braaaa "….. I am nowhere near as experienced as any career mechanic… but as an amateur I do have 30 some odd clutch jobs under my belt. a 1972 Peterbilt , several 2 ton trucks , a Chev 1 ton dually , a 66 F -100 4×4 , 2 early Broncos , a 99 Porsche 911 , a 74 Fiat X 1/9 , numerous Toyota and Datsun pickups , a couple Tercels , my latest just last week was a 1996 Tacoma 4×4 I did by myself with just a floor jack. If I can offer one thought… I never , ever , ever leave the transmission in neutral… If you do that, you cannot move the tail shaft and if you move the engine to line the splines up, the input shaft can turn more easily… put f -er in a gear . Great work here non the less… fun to watch …

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars OLD SCHOOL says:

My lesson was the oil pan drain plug- did my first engine as an apprentice- drained the oil when disassembling and then screwed the drain plug back in finger tight- got the motor all together and it ran perfect- customer took it and a day later it came back on the hook- drain plug had fallen out and spun a bearing. Hard lesson learned well- same philosophy- never EVER stop in the middle of a process for lunch or anything else. Served me well for many decades.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Assessor 12 says:

Yeah…the wonderful Mazda nuts and bolts. I’d guess that the fasteners are all made by the same supplier for all of the Japanese OEMs but perhaps Mazda uses some sort of compound on them that causes the seizing after they’ve been heated and cooled a few times. The Miata is built in Hiroshima – maybe it’s a radiation issue….;)

I always lube the splines. Keeps them from rusting up for a while. Like you said, just don't over do it to where it slings. Also a trick I use is to put the transmission in any gear and spin the output shaft a bit to help with lining up the splines and input into the pilot.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steven Mays says:

Better watch putting grease from surgical gloves on your clutch you get some nice shinny glaze on you pressure plate LOL
