Foreign guys, she's toast. Another blown up engine. This is a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 lifted. It's a two-wheel drive model.

It came in on a tow truck and it's making some horrendous engine noises. I am Raymond and this is Ray's repairs opening. Z Hood Oh look who that guy is. All right, let's get this knocking blown up.

Chevrolet Silverado 5.3 Restarted and backed into our service stall. She's got 136 104 miles on the odometer and a horrendous engine noise. Yeah yeah, it's pretty gnarly. This thing into the shop.

It has all pressure. We had checked it out a little bit earlier. Something let go, maybe a bearing. Maybe a fuel injector blew out of it.

Maybe the top end is coming apart. So our plan here is going to be to get this thing backed into the service stall. We're gonna pop the hood I'm going to pull the intake manifold off, maybe the valve covers and we need to take a look at the top end and see if our problem is up high or down low. Man, this thing has the turning radius of a cruise ship all the way back right there.

All right, let's shut her down. Sounded good, didn't it all right? Hood release, pop and Z Hood Okay, so we are looking at a 5.3 liter. I think it's an LT1 V8 This is a direct injection variable valve timing, single camshaft, overhead valve push rod. V8 and I Understand it's been camed.

We can hear it. We heard the canvas in there I Heard that's like a like a stage four or something something kind of. Cam I Forget the specs on it, but it's a very aggressive cam. You guys heard the noise and that's actually making this a little harder for us to figure out.

Uh, where that sound is coming from. So I would like to begin with a uh, a top end inspection. I Was considering pulling this intake manifold off, but I think I can get to our uh, our valve covers without pulling off that intake manifold. So we're going to try that method.

First, pull this guy apart, pop the covers off and see if we have a bent push rod situation or uh, something that nature. maybe the valve train exploded under one of the valve covers. Yeah, come here. Clip.

now. you guys can't see back there. but hopefully I'll get this apart fast enough where you don't get bored and click away. What do you say to that? So right now I'm pulling the ignition coil wires.

There's a four coils on each cylinder bank and they're located underneath of this uh, little cover here. So let's get this guy off. That's good. and I should just be able to pop this uh, plastic cover off the other cover.

Come here all the way. Come here There we go. Performance: Ignition coils hold these uh, coil or spark plug wires off. Words: Let's get the uh, the MSD ignition components removed.

Get that back one. Also, this truck's a little lifted so I'm up on a stool right now trying to get some Reach action in here. So now we can hit all these 10 mil bolts for this valve cover. Pull this thing off.

We can leave the coils attached because we can still reach the bolts up with the coils in place. Okay, let's reach. Let's try to get the back ones first. the farthest away ones.
Those are the hardest to get those guys out. I'm gonna need a Torx for that dipstick tube right there I Just saw that it's been a little while since I've had one of these apart I Don't think I've been into one very deep since. uh, the dealership and that was many moons ago. That one.

there's another one way way back. You guys can't see it from your point of view, but it's back there. Missed it. Got it.

Pull that guy out and then a little farther back there's I think there's one more down there. I Might need to get a more aggressive wobble to get to that one. Let me try squeeze that in. Yep, Nope.

Can't make the turn. Need a more wobbly bit action? Give your snap on Ultra Shallow wobble 10. it hasn't been lost yet. It's not going to I covet this socket.

well. I Don't know if I covet it. you shouldn't be coveting things. but I uh I hold up a lot of value to that or it holds value to me.

You know what? I'm saying I Think you do? Come on. get on there. um so close and yet dropping the ball I might need it. That sucks.

It's not gonna do it. I need the Deep one? No way. let's try the Deep one that's a another 10. uh, not a shallow.

that's a deeper one so that might be able to make the turn on that nut bolt. whatever it is, with the appropriate amount of extension and phangy articulation and that stupid ground straps. really really making this not fun. Send it reverse sending.

Almost got her look at that. Got it? Okay, we are now back on schedule. Let's pull off these. uh, these front bolts here.

get these guys buzzed out. Um I see it? it tried to escape but it will fail. which I have like seven 10 millimeter sockets here. the whole collection.

Oh no. oh this job is killer on the ABS I'm like laying on a radiator support. Okay, she's unbolted. Let's see if I can maneuver this thing out.

Oh Torx bit for the dipstick tube. we got to get that thing. looks like a T25 all right torque spec coming in. Let's Buzz that little nut off of there.

it's looking. free up the dipstick tube. Got it? Let's pull the rest of the tube out. Oh camera, grab it there you go.

All right valve cover. let's see what we've got here. Um out there she is. Hmm I don't know what I can see in here? Just yeah.

Okay, let's check these rockers. That one's good. That valve is closed so that's probably pretty good. That's good.

What I'm looking for is total Destruction which I have not located under this valve cover. Let's uh, go over to the other side and pull that other cover off and see what's going on with that one. Okay, we're on the passenger side. Let's do the uh, similar procedure here.

We'll pull the coils, pop the cover, and then unbolt the Uh The Rocker cover here. Come here. coil. get that one off.
This is the harder side because these, uh, what you call them heater core hoses. These guys right here. those are in the way. Get that guy out in the back.

Oh, the dipstick tube is not bolted on. That's an indicator of someone else's presence. There we go. All right.

those are all disconnected. Let's get the plastic decorative shiny cover off of here. Come here. Black shiny cover.

I'd Leave these off just to show off my uh, my ignition components and MSD wires. I wouldn't put those back on. That's just me. Plus that can serve as like a weight reduction model or uh, practice or weight reduction mod.

There we go. Modification for more horsepower performances. Oh man, you guys just got hit in the Noggin with a flashlight. Are you okay? My hat knocked it off.

the thing up there that was not all right. I'm dangerous people. dangerous. Okay, one more MSD wire.

Get that guy out Now we can unbolt uh this rocker cover and check for damage inside of this uh, cylinder. Head here. a 10 mil bolts coming out. I'm gonna go as far back as possible and get the harder to reach units and then we'll work our way forward and get the easier ones because that one next I can't even see these things there it is.

Another got a bracket right here for these hoses. It'll give us more slack as well to reach around these hoses. Let's get these nuts bolts out of here. so I don't lose them.

Okay, these are our. that's the last of the bottom. Fasteners I Think foreign back to the top and all the way out back. I'm gonna try to just, uh squeeze my flanges back there and get a hold of that last one.

It's a mini obstacles here. gotta fish the tools in kind of feel around I know y'all can't see. sorry I can't see coming out. Ah, that one's out okay now I just need to recover it.

There she is. Got it? Okay, the back one Now it should be smooth sailing from here on out if I can see where that next guy went. Yep, way down there. another ten I think I'm down to two more.

There you go. Okay, it's loose. cover is loose and falling off. Let's Wiggle this unit out of here and take a look underneath and see what's going down.

What do we got? Um, what are we stuck on here? What's the deal? Something's hanging me up I Don't understand why the cover won't come out stuck on something? What the heck? Oh I'm silly I forgot one of the spark plug wires I don't know how I missed that dirt to dirt. Don't worry guys, it's my first day. It's gonna be okay I can unwring this Bell looked right over top of that. How did I do such things? All right? Well, there's our valve train on the passenger side.

Let's see what. Uh, we've got any total Destruction in here checking the Rockers I Think this is okay. Yeah, it's not good. yeah.
I Believe our issue is, uh, gonna end up being in the bottom end. Um, let's continue our disassembly here. I'm going to pull this intake manifold off because even though we've got a bottom end problem, this motor is coming out. which it probably will be, this intake manifold has to go just to get the motor extracted.

Okay, let's start with this K N Intake tubing. here. We're going to un unclamp this from our throttle body okay and then one more down over here at the filter. I'm gonna clamp U right here.

These wobbles are great, but they're super wobbly. Do that. And then we've got a mass airflow sensor co-neck door. Set that aside.

I Think this thing's good to go to? Uh to come out of here? Yep. pull that guy right on out. All right. A couple more connectors to fiddle with on this uh intake.

Got that one there and then get this. Evap Solenoid: These are always a tough one. You gotta squeeze both sides. I Think I'm better off with just taking the solenoid out of the manifold.

You know? let's just do that bracket is in the way. Pull that nut out of there and that's going to release this bracket. holds on to that harness. We'll give the harness some more stretch and room, a couple more connectors to disconnect, and then I can sneak this socket in down and get to the bolt on that Purge cylinder.

We'll just pull that off the manifold rather than trying to leave it on and disconnect that Troublesome connector right there. Is that thing going to come out? Yep. And then our electron connection snap that guy loose, give it a pinch right there, and then a tug that's loose, but this guy and set that up over there. It's out of the way and we're now free to access all the 10 mil bolts on this uh, upper intake.

Foreign. I Believe that's all of the bolts for the intake. See if she's loose. Sure is okay.

let's back up some and uh, start to wiggle this unit off the top of this engine. Gonna be a two-handed operation here I Think let's see how I'm gonna maneuver myself. hold back. There we go.

Okay, all right, all right, let's move in a little closer here and take a peek down inside. runners seeing like noises. All right. try.

excuse me sir. Could I trouble you to not make that noise for just a moment. Complete I Know very nice. Well don't worry about that cover because I'm going to put a new one on.

Okay, but we want to descale. Don't worry about this stuff over here because we're putting new stuff on I Just want to descale like all this crusty business right here so we can paint that in the housing. Yep, yeah, just get the just get all the rust off the housing. um and strip off all this Hardware stuff like see that and this cable? yeah, that hose right there.

all the solid Hardware strip that stuff off like that brake line. Okay, because we're going to use the stuff that's on the truck because that's new in this. Okay, anyway, let's go down. take a peek in these.
uh, these intake Runners here and just see if we can't identify any kind of carnage. I mean there's some Carbon on those valves on that one there that looks okay. These are going to get harder to see as we go back. so if I get you guys in position and we don't see what's going on because I'm running out of a the proper direction here.

how's that one looking? That's not too bad. Okay I'm looking for Carnage Not not dirt or debris, anything of that nature. and I think yeah, that valves. maybe a valve fell out of it.

That's kind of what. I'm checking on here I Hope that one's good and we're good there on that one. Let's check our very back cylinder. Can we see me? Not really.

Kinda. nope. Yep, there it is. Okay, All right.

so all the valves are looking good here so we didn't lose a valve on it. it's not in the top end. I Don't think it blew an injector out because those are all still there. so it must be uh, down below okey-dokes So at this point I'm pretty sure that we have a bottom end failure.

Let's run this. uh whoa. gravity. Let's run this truck up into the air zone and we can can't get that oil pan off of there with some relative ease.

What has failed here? If I'm gonna pull it off or not, but if it's going to come out in 20 minutes, no problem. If it's gonna take forever to get it out, then, uh. well. I don't know about to reevaluate.

Moving on up all the way up, All right, let us roll our oil drain down here. We're gonna pull an oil sample out of this engine and maybe see if there's some metal chunks in there or any other kind of evidence that can help us out to determine the nature of this, uh, of this failure here. Get this guy cracked loose on kick it and I've grabbed a uh, a styrofoam coffee cup. Where do I want to do with it? I Have a coffee cup here and we're going to collect some of that oil just to give it a closer examination if need be there.

What we can do: Go ahead and back this drain plug out. Yeah, it really won't. It's too tight for my flanges here. We need some kind of mechanical advantage.

there's some a little bit of Leverage Now let's see what we get there. We go nice and easy peasy. like. pull this plug out, see if the pan is full of metal which it may be, it may not be and if it's not, then uh, we'll pull that filter off and check that too.

I Where's my cup right here below me? Did I do this quickly? like Drop It See what we get out of this? I Don't see sparklies in there just yet. Let's go ahead and let it ride. Gotta tell you that all does not look great. Doesn't smell that great either.

Check that out in a minute. Let's take a look at our stream here. Yeah, look at there. There's metal in it.

See all that. Oh yeah, see the all the swirls of the sparklies coming down. Yeah, this thing's loaded full of metal. It lost a bearing somewhere, so that is enough evidence for me.
Yep, see the the discoloration right there in the Stream a little white part coming out that's metal chunks or metal shavings or metal pieces. Let's uh, let's pull the filter off and cut it open. Why not see what's inside of the filter? Maybe there's chunks in there? I Don't know if I can get it by hand? Ah, negative. Let's see here.

a filter wrenches. Not that one one of these two. Okay, let's go. let's try this one here.

first. filter broken loose. Yeah, that's good. Also, nasty.

Come on. Filter there too. Look at that. Yeah, she's done okay.

Let's get this over onto a bench. undo some towels and we'll cut it open. see what's inside? I Feel this label off because I'm gonna be cutting right through here. where the paper is here.

label. Yeah! So I have an oil filter cutting device right here. It's this little flat guy, a couple uh, roller bearings bolted to it and then we have this adjustable block threaded assembly with the knurled knob and that will run this little cutter into the metal on the filter and as we rotate the thing around, it will cut into the filter and then cut it in half. Kind of like a sideways can opener kind of.

screw that guy in the blade is going to start to push in on the metal and all we need to do is rotate it and it'll spin around and cut the thing open. Hang on! I'm getting a phone call it's from A-Rod Power Stroke Tech Talk with A-Rod Let's see what he wants. Well, you might be on the internet I don't know I might leave this in I might take it out. What's up man, what can I do for you? Well he brought news of tools.

Let's get back to it. I'm going to put a filter wrench on this so I can get a good grip and then what we can do is just give her a turn foreign, the tool on the end of the filter and it's cutting a hole through the filter. You guys see how that's working, rotate and cut and we are through and inside of this oil filter. Let's take our tool back off the cutter.

see what's in here? Look at that right there. There's a bunch of debris not looking good. We have more contaminants real close into that oil. You can see that there is little pieces of metal.

fill out a little little shiny flakes in there. see that right there at the edge end. Edge And there's more metal coming through. Not okay, not looking good.

Let's see if you can't see what's inside the pleats here and a bunch of metal in there in between. The Fleets The whole thing is sparkly. Yeah, this. uh, this engine is full of something.

Something let go some kind of a bearing baby. I Don't know what that is, but it's it. might be part of the filter. Actually, it's kind of crusty and baked on.

and there's more metal right here. You guys see all that. a whole bunch more Sparkle pieces inside of the soil. So all right, the engine has to come out.
There's uh, there's not much more I can do. Now we know it is internal failure. uh and it's going to be not serviceable in chassis. So whatever happened.

Whether it's a cam bearing, a main crankshaft bearing, um, wrist pin, maybe it's got a broken piston. uh, could have just a worn out cam. That's possible. So all we got connecting rod bearings, it could be connected rod bearing.

Um, either way, it's internal to the engine. So what's going to have to happen here is we need to pull this engine out of this truck, get it on a stand, and pull it down, take it apart, and see if it can even be saved, or if we need to just bite the bullet and order a replacement. Uh, long block. So uh I guess at this point I've got to balance all this stuff off.

The owner of this here, particularly Silverado I am afraid I Have nothing more to offer you on this video except a thank you for watching this video As all always I Hope you enjoyed this video. Stay tuned for the next one because if I do any more work we will be pulling this engine out. and I will at least at the bare minimum, do an autopsy on this engine once it's out of chassis so we can find out what happened inside. So let me know if you would like to see the autopsy video of this 5.3 liter.

V8 in this. Chevrolet Again, let me know what you thought about this video down in the comment section below. Do not forget to tap that like button while you're down there and most importantly, have yourselves a fantastic day! See you guys later in the Silverado into 5-3 and of high performance V8 into engine into transmission.

I can’t believe people would be interested in your videos but not have the patience to watch them through. I have to think they must have ADHD or some other issue with that to be clicking away from your videos. You’re doing step by step video on how to repair various problems with vehicles and I think it’s important that you show each step. If too many people are clicking off the videos maybe try to create 2 videos one short and sweet the other in detail. Just cut a bunch out of the detailed video to make the short one then when they are confused they can watch the entire video to figure out what they missed 😂

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RMH says:

When you lifted the back valve cover up it sparked against the screw on the back of the alternator where the red wire runs. I was just wondering if for some reason there was a reason not to disconnect the battery whether it be a radio code or something. My concern was having a battery connected during service is that I might accidentally trigger an airbag to go off.

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brody Greer says:

Just had to engine swap my dad's truck for him this year. Same thing. But he took it a step further and included the milk shake. But the down side was. We couldn't find a decent l59 to replace his. But I found a lm7 with only 80,000 and pushing 130+ on all 8.

These ls engine are decent. But don't be racing them on stock form. Don't do a cam without building the motor to it

Hey Ray, Word up about your filter cutter. It wont last long cutting like you did. Make a few lighter cuts, not one puncture cut. It's like a tubing cutter, make all the cuts light and the cutting wheel lasts a long time. It's brittle, so if it isn't squared up it can snap.

To tell the truth, as an owner, I do not want to pay labor to find out what failed. It's toasted. I need to know the out-the-door-price for another engine so I can determine if it's worth the $$ to buy another engine, or just junk the whole thing, move on and know better for next time.
