Customer Customer States Mechanic Fails Engine Transmission Gas Diesel off road race 4x4 street car daily driver scam dealership dealer technician how to

Hello everybody, Good day to you and welcome back! Glad you guys are here I know I'm super glad to be here. Uh, we are about to engage in the F-150 swapping game I have to pull out this F-150 supercharged lightning and swap it out with a non- lightning F-150 that's outside in the parking lot stoping Z engine. Now the lightning outside. This is, uh, kind of going to be a bit of a Troublesome situation.

Uh, I've made a video about this particular F-150 actually I think I made two. Uh, I'll go ahead and leave links to those videos down in this video's description if you would like to visit them later on after this video. but uh, this truck is coming back. Uh, for what I'm going to call an invasive diagnostic? Uh, what has happened is the uh the F-150 in question Outside it's got I believe the 54 uh, three valve Triton engine which is a known engine blower upper.

They they didn't live too long if you didn't maintain the uh, the engine oil on them. Uh, regardless. Uh, that particular engine or the original one in that particular truck has been replaced with what they called a premium level remanufactured unit. which I find that to be funny because there are not a lot of Rebuilders that will rebuild those 54s.

Uh, they have an oiling system issue and what happens with those things is uh as the it's got a a crankshaft priority oiling system. So what'll happen is when the oil pump picks up oil, it runs it through the crank first. Then there's oil that's run up to the driver side cylinder head from the front side. Oil runs from the front of that head, around to the back of that head, then over to the other head and then over to the front of the passenger side cylinder head.

I Think that is my understanding of the uh, the oil flow on that particular engine. Uh. Regardless, uh, what has happened is I Think think that they rebuilt that engine with one that had a damaged core. meaning it's uh, probably got some scoring in the cam shaft journals and the thing bleeds down oil pressure over time.

Uh, right now. the customer complaint on this new engine that they have is that it makes a loud rattle noise on Startup And then once the thing builds oil pressure, the uh, the rattle goes away. It's got a trouble code I Think it's a P3 P0320 memory res serves and uh, that states that the cam shaft on I believe it's the driver's side cylinder head does not correlate properly with the crankshaft. meaning the engine's out of time.

Whether that's permanently or temporarily, it has the trouble code. So what we need to do in order to collect on warranty on this engine is the warranty company or the company that sold the engine. Uh, would like, uh, some kind of proof that it makes this noise on Startup Uh, What they have requested is that we take the engine. Bring it.

uh uh, prep it inside the shop, pull the valve covers off of it, and then start the engine with the valve covers removed. That's uh, that's the plan and we're going to observe and uh and document and probably take a video of uh, this engine making the noise on Startup Um, it's going to be gross. It's going to be messy I Don't want to do it like this, but the people that sold the engine insist that that's what they need for proof that there's an issue with it. So what we're going to do today powering down is, we're going to go and fetch I think it's an 05 the F-150 with the other 54 and we're going to get that thing prepped into the shop or get it into the shop.
We're going to prep it. I'm going to pull the valve covers off of it. We're going to suspend all the wiring and whatnot. Uh, that way I'll be able to start the engine uh with the covers removed, and then uh, we can observe for a nasty rattle on cold start.

So as I I had mentioned, we've done previous work to this and what we ended up having to do was go back in and fix all of the incorrectly routed wiring harnesses. There's a noise. Yeah, I heard the Rattle and there's an exhaust noise and check in light. Anyway, last time around number one, we didn't have that exhaust noise.

Uh, but I fixed a uh, a very poor wiring job. Uh, basically when they hook the harness is up after they installed this new engine, they uh uh, they didn't do a very good job of putting the harness away and wires were being pulled on the fuel injectors. There was linkage on the intake manifold that was binding up. It was a very shoddy job at best and it was causing a lot of problems and multiple trouble codes were caused by the wiring harness not being properly installed.

So last time we had this truck I had to go through fix all the trouble codes I re re rerouted the the wiring harness and we managed to get rid of all the Dtc's except for a P uh P0320 which was the the cam shaft crankshaft correlation code. Then we'll get everything pulled down and we'll try to capture that noise on Startup with the camera. So stay tuned because this is going to be a very very good video uping. Z Hood Oh look who that guyy is.

Look out Shop Dog All right. I Think we're good right about here. Parking the auto firing down here before we get too deep into this. let's just double check those.

uh Dtc's real quick powering on scan tool beep. Let's get her plugged into our DLC that's a data link connector and we'll do a read only real fast and see. Just confirm that we only have that P 0320 I believe that's what the code is attempting. Automatic ID Come on with it please.

Here we go: 2005 Ford F-150 543 valve V8 single overhead cam It's a soak, not a dop. it's a soak going into engine trouble Code: Me: please What do we have here? Memory codes key on engine off blah blah blah yes, we are doing that and CMP sensor A Bank 2 CMP sensor A Intermittent Bank two uh, power Steering pressure pressure sensor We know about that and there's a fault in noock sensor circuit too. Okay I don't know if that 330 was there last time we were worked on this or not I believe those knock sensors are down in the valley and but oh, here we go. Yeah, p 0 345 and the 349 so it was not a 320 I was mistaken.
But we do have a uh a circuit issue with CMP sensor a that could be wiring but we also have a base engine noise and that's that's kind of the issue here. So what I'm going to do is we're going to prep this for later since the engine's been running I'm probably going to have to let it cold soak uh for a few hours, maybe overnight, but we'll see how far along in the process we get today. Hello 54 Triton Oh, this is going to be. this is going to be a mess.

Well I Suppose the best place to start is the beginning so we should probably remove this uh, air intake ducting right here. Looks like we've got a 1 110 mm bolt right there. We're going to need a tray for our Fasteners and not there. So I leave it there then.

Uh well. it's going to fall over. Pull this guy out of the fender right there. Good to go.

Oh, hang on a second folks. We're a little ahead of ourselves here. I I Just reviewed a moment ago the uh, the warranty claim paperwork and they're uh, they're asking for an oil pressure reading uh at idle. So uh, we're going to revise what we're going to do here.

This truck's going up in the air green subscribe button I've already set up the rack. We're going to run this thing up some. I'm going to find a plug or something, or maybe even pull the oil pressure switch out and we're going to connect the gauge, restart the engine, and get a pressure at idle first before we do anything to the engine. So I have uh I just do what I'm told that's what they want so we're going to do that next.

You see? this is why I Operate on the non plan plan cuz if you don't have a plan then if your plan gets disrupted, you won't end up with a disrupted plan the benefit of being on the non plan plan. Moving up, we're going all the way up here to the top good and we'll set her down on the locks real slow like on down down for safety locks Engaged Little weey wobbly. Yep, we're good to go. All righty Down below here.

let's take a look at our oil filter housing right in front of us here and behind this wire harness. It's dangling down, no connector there. There is our oil pressure sending unit right here. So what we're going to do? Disconnect that guy.

We're going to pull that oil pressure switch out of there and we're going to install a gauge into that Port right there. So we got a 21 mil coming in. Let's crack this guy loose, pull this unit on, right on out of here, and then. uh, get that gauge and its adapters threaded in.

Wonder how much oil we're about to spill out of this thing. Oil drains in place, roll that over and let it ride. Let's see what comes out. Still pretty good looking oil.

not much spill, it's action. There's our sending unit, set that aside and I'll go fetch the filter adapter plug set or not. filter adapter the uh, fillow pressure gauge. We're going to get that.
That's what I need. Engine oil pressure testing Kit: Yep, there's all of our adapters that we're looking for and the gauge. and then the gauge will screw into whatever adapter is necessary. We can make that determination by comparing I Think this is the one I'm looking for.

Maybe possibly yeah, let's see if this one screws in. Let's see what we get here. Put you right there. If that threads in, we're good to go, and if not, then well, we're not good to go.

and that's too large. that one does not fit. but this one that one might fit I think that's the one. Let's try the next one down, see if she threads and we have.

that's Victory Okie does all right. Let's tighten that guy up, screw it in, let's get the gauge and hook that up next. All righty gauge coming in. we'll set that down right there in the oil and go ahead and thread this unit in to its adapter right up top.

We just turn that in until it bottoms out. Now that hose does not swivel very well. So what I'll do is I'll just come over here and just twist it and twist it and twist it until it threads in all the way up here. See it, it's turning There we go.

little tighter. clicks. That should be good. Okay, so now what we'll do is we'll take the gauge, pull that back over, and I'm going to feed that up through one of these holes here so we can see it from the top side.

All right, let's go ahead and let this thing back down. Green Subscribe button. That's what we do here. Lock release and come coming down slowly.

There we go. So what we do next is we let this thing down. Pull that gauge up to where it's not going to run into the belt or the fan or any other moving or hot pieces. Then we'll reach inside, hit the key, and restart the engine while we observe the gauge.

I Believe we're looking for around 14 to 15 psi of oil pressure at idle. Let's see, there's our gauge. Let's pull that on up. See, it's right down there next to the Belt by the oil filter so we can just pull that right there.

It looks good. and let's go ahead and hit the key. restart the engine. Dave's going to help us out.

He's going to key it on. Yeah, go ahead and fire it up. Sir Let's see what we get here. All right.

We got plenty of oil pressure. That's not the noise in question, that's the exhaust leak. We have o pressure y. Go ahead and shut her down.

Dave Where were we? about? 55? PSI 5, 10, 15, 20 No. 10 20, 30, 40 H I Can't tell. Well, that's 50 right in the middle. So yeah, about 50 psi.

55 somewhere in that zone. Okay, that's plenty of oil pressure. All right folks. We returned multiple days later.

This thing has been parked over the holiday weekend. The oil pressure gauge is still on it. Uh, what my guys want us to do? Uh, and those are the people that built this engine that offer the warranty on it. What they would like to do, like we talked about earlier, is they want me to pull these valve covers off and restart the engine with no valve covers on it to verify that the noise is in fact coming from under the valve cover.
Now I know it is and you know it is, but they don't believe either one of us so we just have to prove it. which is silly I don't see why I should have to prove something that I already know uh to a person who is not knowledgeable in such things. I am I'm literally talking to a person that's behind a desk and they don't know about these things but they're telling me that, uh, that what I said is not accurate I've been uh, working on the bottom bolt for this power steering bracket right here where we need to get this out of the way. It's kind of a peach cuz it comes up from the bottom of the cylinder head very slowly, quarter turn at a time.

get this last bolt out, then this bracket comes free and then we can start to, uh, get to the coils and uh, the bolts for the valve cover. I Don't know if they want me to do one cover or both covers. uh, it's going to be an oily mess when we start this engine cuz cuz it's going to fling oil everywhere from the valve train since I do believe it is this side and this is the side that is coating. I think I'll start with just uh, the driver side and if we have to I'll pull the other side off.

Come on! Fastener All speed. I Switched out to the flang ratchet so I can get more horsepower out of this. It's the short little ratcheting Ren head thing socket that I have like a I call it a ratcheting Crow's foot switched out to that from the 1/4 in size 38 Drive shallow 18 socket because this is not fun. Did I get it yet? No, yes, Got it.

Okay, there we go Now we're cooking. I've got the bolt loose enough for the little groove thing right here to come out. so I'll take my tool, put that back where it goes and looks like we need to get rid of some of this plumbing and wiring connectors and all this other good stuff. PCV System This hose needs to go away for now.

I'll have to plug it into something or plug the fitting in on the intake to make this run. Oh, let's see what else do we do. Yeah, Electrical connectors. Then we've got the perimeter 8 mil bolts that go around this valve cover here.

Begin electrical disassembly procedure. Now start getting sensors and whatnot disconnected. Lose this harness. Get this thing pulled aside.

What else do we have here. Injectors: I Guess we'll pull those out I Think I'm just going to pull the all the connectors for everything first and then we'll reconnect the harness as we need to get rid of that one. Oh, that's nice. Look at that from the uh, the the installers.

I Must have missed this when I had the intake off this a few weeks ago. Look at that right there. Our installation professionals did a, uh, less than Professional installation job. Did we strip out this valve cover? Yeah, yeah, we did.
What is this? Come out? Ignition Coil Man this. This is one of those things where situations where everything like the deeper you go, the more you find. yeah, look at here. see that that's a JB Weld Repair on a strip thread bolt from a broken valve cover.

That's great I wonder how many more of those we're going to find in here. Multiple I'm assuming let's get that one disconnected, one in the back. All right, that's that's all the coils. Second, injector, third, injector, oh, Fourth injector I can leave that fourth one attached.

That one's fine. Okay, pull the harness off of the studs coming out of the valve cover. What else may I do I Need to disconnect this little guy right here. We're going to pull that through just so it's up, up and out of the way and then there's this, uh, that one in the back there going to the throttle body I Remember that from last time there we go.

Okay, so what we have is, let's check on. Oh, look another one. Look at that. Look at what they did.

Come on guys, look at this thing right here. Broken off right there there. I can't see it's broken off right right there at the mount. Look at that.

Let's pull this thing out. Put the uh, the coil on I Think that's cylinder six 7 Cylinder 7 broken coil. Okay, yeah, it's supposed to look like this with the metal insert inside. This one's just flat out broken and the bolt is missing.

There is no fastener for that coil, it's not even there. and this piece of the valve cover is also busted off. Super here. let's get I think that's a seven? Is that a seven? I don't remember.

it is. Yes, that's 7 7 mm. I Set it down and then it fell down and then I I Ripped through the space time continuum, defeated the physics of the Matrix and then caught it in mid-flight That was great. Anyway, there's our Fener.

Here's a non-broken coil. Come out. it's stuck there. We go now.

Some of these Fords used to Auto eject their ignition coils. What would happen on the I Think it was the two valves that did it. The earlier ones, the Uh spark plug threads would fall out of them and it would fire the spark plug out of the cylinder head like a cannon. Naturally, that would break the Uh ignition coil and damage a few things.

Then the engine would misfire real bad. but it was. It was a super common. Thing Once Upon A Time Let's get rid of that coil coming out.

Okay, so I think I've got enough space to kind of maneuver around a little bit and remove this. uh, this cover here. Come out there. That's that hose there.

that's the hose that runs back for the vacuum source for the Braak booster. We just kind of Tuck this up and back over here. I Think stay, stay all righty. 8mm swivel socket coming in.
We're going to get all these perimeter bolts disconnected and we'll pull this cover off that was tighter than I thought it should have been. Let's get that bottom one down there. Got it all right? Three down, many more to go. I've done a tool change.

we're going with the electron ratchet uh and the extension and a swivel again. So that quarter inch gun is going to have a harder time fitting down in that hole. unclick going paint just flying off this thing next. the ones out back going to be fun.

That was stupid tight. tight enough to break my ratchet. Now we're getting to the harder, farther away ones need to lose that extension. We'll go in with just the socket.

missed it, kicked it here. there. Now you can see Now I can see we all can see the neutral drop tactic is not working on this. Those are too overtightened now I don't know.

Is there one right in the middle? Sure is why of course there is. It' be silly for there not to be one right right in the middle there. All right. climbing up I'm sitting on top of the radiator shroud now or radiator support.

rather trying to get two hands in here. Wow, that one's stupid tight as well. That's it's fun. Ah, it came off.

come on loose. More there it goes. Okay, that's the back one. that's the hardest one.

I think now we'll go the next farthest away one or the next closest or one. You know what I meant the next one I Canot the beach. Oh man, it's rat nest in here and I'm sliding off my radiator. Well, it's not my radiator, it's the customer's radiator.

You know what I meant it's not going to work I Need an extension? Yeah. I just need that little bit of extra Swap this guy in there and we'll extend our extension socket. Then maybe it'll reach a little better. It's this.

There's an EVAP line in the way. That's my malfunction here. Unclick. There we go.

We're cooking now last now. This cover should be Loosey Goosey if for she coming right out of there. hopefully I'd like to Not Disturb This Uh, vacuum hose as much as possible it it plugs into the back of the intake manifold with like a t- fitting or some kind of plastic nipple and if it comes off of that manifold, it's a real bear to put back on. So I hope I don't yank it out there we go.

That was bright. Got the cover oo new blue gasket. Oh look at that. look at all that sludge in there man.

All right. so we've got the cover off of it I Cleaned up a little bit around the spark plug holes cuz there was some dirt hanging out there and I didn't want it to fall inside of this nice shiny, clean, brand new engine. Brand new looking Dis engine. uh we can see it's got a new uh cam phaser actuator.

It does have a new cam shaft phaser sprocket and if we look oh how do I don't know if I can see it? Let me try right here. If we take a peek right down down there, we can see FCO right there. FCO Ford Motor Company Fomo. So those are not Chinesium aftermarket phasers.
those are Ford phasers unless they're counterfeit. so it's I Can assume that this was a a quality build with good parts in it, but it's making noise somewhere. Um I'm not seeing really anything here that's kind of going to be a dead giveaway. I I think I'm going to go ahead and pull the other valve cover off this thing also and then we'll take a look under that side.

What is that? What is that? What is that? Look at. Look at this. look right here. A piece of paper in the cylinder head.

Look. there's the there's the mark where the valve cover gasket goes and this piece of paper was sitting right there. This is not supposed to be in the engine. Okay, Uh.

I Don't know if this is the cause of the noise or not, but it's definitely not supposed to be in there and there's pieces of it missing. So there was more paper than just that. Where's the rest of it? Is it in the engine? Uhoh here. I'll tell you what.

let's go ahead and start sticking these ignition coils back in cuz we are going to run this vehicle so we can recoil everything. Put these guys back where they go. There's the fourth one. We'll reconnect the harness and all that good stuff, get everybody reconnected, and I'll probably have to secure this harness with a bungee cord so it doesn't uh, touch the valve train components because that would, uh, not be okay.

You don't want to put your harness inside of your valve train. It's never a good day. Okay, that's our. uh.

injectors. Those are all connected. DPFE Get that connected? No, No, no, that's A that's a F FRP fuel rail pressure sensor. Let's see that one goes back to the throttle body.

so we're good on that connector. All right. Everybody's plugged back in so it's capable of running again. All right.

Same as the other side. I Guess we'll go ahead and start with the the connectors. We'll do injectors. We'll do uh.

coils. We'll pull the coils out, check for broken bolts and missing bolts again, and then. uh. we'll get this cover pulled out of here and extracted.

Oh, flashlights are all coming down. It's like a flashlight. Avalanche two at the same time that one there, one injector in the back. Number four.

These heater hoses are going to be fun to contend with. I Can tell you that right now. Not excited. This is not my favorite engine platform to work on.

especially one that's been molested, molested by others. Um, I'm going back for that rear coil. That's a doozy H a doo dooy. When was the last time we heard somebody call something a doozy? That's great.

All right. 7 mil coming in. Let's get the Fasteners on the coils. I Imagine half of them are loose and stripped and broken off.

Let's find out next. that felt kind of rough. Hey, all the bolts are there. We have all four of them.
That's twice as many as the other side. Come on coil. it's going to be a two-handed operation. Double flang assist.

Pop that one in the back's going to be fun. I Might have to pull this ECM out of here just to reach the rear bolts on the cover. come out coil got her. That's all four coils removed.

See the harness. We'll take that stick that aside, disconnect our cam phaser, disconnect down below us the cam sensor in the front. that'll just give us extra wiring, harness wiggle room here. I Don't know what that is.

Just tuck that over there. There's an electronic interference Muffler device right here. come unconnected. Nope.

We need to get it with a pocket driver. There we go. All right. I Guess we're ready to roll with the 8 Ms on the swivel again.

Let's get the perimeter Bolts from the cover removed with a quickness I Don't want to dilly d too long cuz I Want to start this engine? and you guys want me to start this engine so we had better get on with it getting deeper. Oh, that one's going to be fun I'm maneuvering the socket around a bunch of wires. Got to get it just at the right angle for our dangle here. Got it? Unclick You? Oh no.

I don't have enough I don't have enough. throw now. what do I do I miscalculated that. oh that's in there too.

Come on. unclick. No that thing's in there I'll tell you what. we push it down, angle our swivel and maybe that might have did it.

y okay now those ones in the back. those are going to be super fun cuz we can barely see them. I think I'm going to have to probably pull this ECM out of here. That's how this is going to have to go I just cannot get the access that I think I need back in there with this uh ECM in the way.

So let's get this guy unbolted and removed. Maybe we'll have some more working space here. So right down there there's one of these 10 ms and it's semic captured by this battery box now I don't feel like pulling the battery out too. so we're going to sneak this one out of here first while the Uh ECM is secured to the bracket.

Pull that guy out and then we can zip the other three out with a a quickness you know I say with a quickness. Nothing about this job is going to be quick like we don't even have authorization to repair it yet. See, this is why technicians do not like dealing with warranty work. uh, in and out of the dealership because it is not cost effective when you are a flat rate guy and it's actually not cost effective kind of at all because you have to waste time I Already know this engine's got a problem.

so why don't we take the steps to rectify the problem? instead of forcing me to prove that there is in fact a problem. you would think that the customer and their satisfaction level is enough to prove or disprove. Whether there's a problem. I mean take a video about the thing.
It doesn't matter, there's It's easy to prove that stuff. but we have to make it hard. It's like when you call customer service for anything, got to make it hard. All right.

Well, Ecm's out. We've got one more bracket. I Think that's just a one or two, maybe three. Fasteners We're going to pull this off too.

And then I get to drop that down in the spark plug hole. That was cool magnet on a stick. Let's fatch that. Fastener There it is.

Good thing the spark plug was still in, otherwise that might have been harder to fetch. So anyway, uh now I think I can reach some some more Fasteners back there. looks like this is all going to happen by hand I don't know if I can fit power tools down in that hole. It's kind of a tight squeeze.

You know folks ask me. They're like dude, how come you're always kind of in a good mood while you're at work or while you're wrenching on stuff and people will comment. you know I'd have been throwing R wrenches across the building and cussing people out. Well the reality is, there was another another ray, an evil Ray and uh, I killed him.

See, the problem is, is that kind of mentality? There we go. That mentality is cancerous. Meaning once you adopt that mentality where you you whine about all the stuff that is not right, you got to learn that the problem is nobody else cares. So you're whining and whining and whining all day and nothing's going to get done about it.

cuz again, nobody cares. So then that'll make you more frustrated and then you're whining more and complaining more and again. we're still nobody cares. So it just compounds and then you're an evil technician who's constantly complaining and upset and in a bad mood.

Because number one, the job's already hard and number two, the customers are already hard. and then number three, you got all these systems that make it even harder and all you're trying to do is do the right thing. But nobody wants to do the right thing. That's the it's the problem, this whole business, and gravity.

That's another problem. So here this is a clear illustration about how frustrating this whole business can be. I'm over here spending 15 minutes sitting on top of that bend over trying to get that bolt on and then as soon as I get it on I drop it to the ground and then hopefully it's yeah. there it is.

So now I've got to climb down Ra I can't even reach now I got to climb down off the truck, come around over here, fetch my tool. Which means all that time that I just spent trying to set this up has become wasted. We're going to go through the wheel well and then I got to come over here and do it again. So I'm going to switch tactics.

That's not going to really work I don't think I've got to get these other from the other couple from the wheel well here but that one in the back I have to get that one from the back. So here, check it out. Yeah, sitting up here making sure I don't scratch the guys paint on the bumper trying to reach down in this hole thing to put this Fastener back on or socket back on rather. And then you got in other shops, the stupid phones ringing, then you got a an advisor coming out asking you to do a quick oil change and you're over here buried in something like this.
and then somebody needs a a quick code scan or something. or you know here, check my tire pressure. This is. This is why we're always mad 15 minutes later.

Got it? I'm stupid. All righty. So I have fast forwarded Through Time some I've pulled out the right front inner wheel. well it's over here.

That's the the fender liner and I need to get access to 1, 2, 3, four, five remaining. Fasteners Uh, one of the problems here I found is this dipstick tube and this tube is bolted on to the rear of the cylinder head right back here. You guys see that right there. That's our that big bowl is for the dipstick tube.

So we're going to sneak a uh half in Impact in here and we're going to bust that not loose, uncooked. Pull that guy out. It's a very large bolt for just a dipstick tube. whatever.

Anyway, so now that's kind of flopping around Freel Like we'll set the Fastener aside and we can go in and get a hold of the remaining 5 8 mm Fasteners that are going to go to uh oh, what's it call? ah the cover right here. see if I can't get the the tool on there next one and I don't even know if I can use a tool on these these other ones here. kind of still a very very very tight squeeze. I think I got this one, that one's going in.

Get on there. Oh nope. Need the extension? Come on Angry Technician come on. Nope nothing's tight enough.

I Guess the installers didn't want this thing to leak so they made made the valve cover. Gu gets really tight. that'll probably that'll probably fix it. See here.

Oh come out, there is zero space to play with. Turn there it goes. Yeah, come on. killing me.

Smalls Okay I think that's all of them. Let's go back to the top side and try to extract this valve cover. Okay, back up top. let's uh, fish these wires out of here as best we can.

Tuck those aside and oh man, come on. I forgot one bolt right here in the front of course I forgot the one in the front there. All right cover. Let's do this without a fuss.

We've already had a fight going on here just to get this to just to come this far and we're hung up out back on something probably the wiring harness. That's great. Yeah, see I'm not always in a good mood. this has me not in a good mood.

Number one: I can feel the sludge under this cover. Number two: Nobody wants to take responsibility for this engine which is annoying. I just went down there and pulled the dipstick tube all the way out to give me some more clearance to kind of sneak this head out of here. It moved a little bit, but not a lot of bit.
Oh, you know what? I see what the problem is I need to discharge the AC system and disconnect that AC hose right there. Look, we're uh, I'm running into that hose with this cover. Oh I try to pull this cover out. so I need to discharge the system real quick going.

Go fetch the AC machine. We'll pull the refrigerant out of this thing and get the refrigerant out and then I can disconnect this line. Yeah, I could have had the motor pulled out by now. This is It's nonsense I don't like nonsense.

this is see I'm mad I'm mad today angry technician. Everyone's fired Dave You're fired. Not really. He's like no I'm not can't fire me I quit so no I don't quit Dave I do that I don't want to get a new Dave cuz you can't replace Dave Dave's that's original.

Can't get a new one? Not possible. We're all unique little creatures. All right. Machine powering on.

Wake up AC machine. It's a little out of season for this device, but you got to do what you got to do. That thing disconnected. see high side.

throw that on there opening. get the low side. O Ring stayed got a hole in my glove. There we go and recover.

Begin recovering. Now here we go. All right, let's let this thing recover real fast. I Can pull this hose off and and then we can pull this cover out.

8 minutes later we are all out of pressure. got ready to rock and roll. Let's go ahead and get, uh, get this hose disconnected here. Unclick is I Knew this side was going to be harder than the other front side or the right side.

You know what I'm talking about. Okay, we do not need need this connector anymore. Let's go and pull that off. Disconnected let cause the machine cuz that's done.

this connector can go away as well y you're done. Power down. Shut that off now. Maybe maybe just maybe we can get this stupid cover out of here Wile Slowly find what's getting stuck and move it.

See that there's a wire stuck. Get that unstuck. Pull this thing right on out. Yeah, look at that.

Super easy and also very sludged up. Hooray! All right. Well now I Guess we can drop these coils back in and get them back into position. Let's go ahead and connect all the ignition stuff and then, uh, we'll hook that ECM back up that last one back there I should have done that one first, but whatever I didn't.

So there. Let's see here injectors getting connected and then coils. I've made an Aor. The coils are pointed the wrong way and because of that the connectors don't want to reach.

Let me flip these guys around. Spin them 180 there. Let's try this again. Let's get all these guys reconnected injector coil in ejector coil.

boring right? So exciting. There we go. See that one goes up top to the intake. this one camshaft phaser.

this one goes to that. uh oh. that one can stay off. We don't need that one.
Okay, injectors and coils are on. Let's take the ECM plug this guy back in cuz we need this so it can run. It will not run without a computer. Where's that third connector that I used to have once upon a time? There it is over there hanging out.

plug that guy in and then this one goes back near the throttle body on the intake. Put that one on. Okay so now I just need to plug up that vacuum hose and then the one on the other side And I suppose after we hook the battery back up, we can fire this engine up and see what it's going to do. Not sure what they expect to achieve out of this the manufacturer people.

but I Just do what? I'm told. Yay! Let's reconnect the battery. Couple thicks on that here we go. Battery's back.

Okay. Final inspection: Everything is plugged in four injectors, four coils, no valve cover. We've got a plug on that vacuum line. There's a plug in that vacuum line right there.

This vacuum Line's been reattached to the booster. Uh, again. everything's plugged in on this side, no cover, and the ECM is connected. So let's uh.

well. let's fire this thing up and see what happens. All right. Moment of Truth: Dave Do the honors for us.

Fired up. Clean oil every everywhere. Ridiculous. All right.

Shut her down. Dave Okay, it was this side making noise. Are you happy? Warranty Company people. Are you happy with what you've done here? This is what you made me do.

Y When you guys ask us to do stupid things, this is the stupid result that you get. Now can we fix this engine? Please Here, let's try it again through the wheel. Well, why not? We already made an Xon Vald's mess. Go ahead.

Dave Fire it up A shut it out leaking all right. So it's not? the passenger side, that's just the exhaust leak that it was making. Let's go check the driver's side. Yay! All right! Dave One more time we'll do it on the passenger side stocking.

Z Engine driver, side driver. Yeah, All right. H saw a bunch of oil flinging out right there I wonder if that was normal or not normal? See that right there dripping? H look at that other side. thank you Dave Let's see if this side over here.

Yeah, it pulls up and drips right there as well. See that right? right right in there? Yep. Okay, real quick. let's do one more.

and I'm going to watch this side of the cylinder head behind the cam gear and see if oil starts to pour out here like it did on the other side. All right. Dave Go ahead, buddy. shut her down.

yeah, pours out in the same spot. Okay, inconclusive results except for exhaust noise, phaser, rattle noise over here right over there. All right everybody. I've done what I'm told I found what I was supposed to find I guess I confirmed that uh, the rattle was on the driver's side I I Already knew that, but you know we had to.

We had to prove it to ourselves. Um. I Also found some some engine paper. I'm pretty sure there's more engine paper somewhere, so who knows what they're going to have us do next.
Uh, at this point, I'm at the mercy of the people that built this engine and their warranty protocol. so I need to submit my fin ings my findings to them and then they're going to tell me what they want me to do on this engine next because I just do what I'm told. So having said all that guys, I have nothing more to offer you on this particular 54 at this time other than an oil splashed Exxon Vald pointless waste of time mess which uh I don't think we had to do any of this, but um, you know it's not my call so let me know what you guys think about this situation in the comment section down below. Do not forget to tap that like And subscribe button while you're down there and most importantly, have yourselves a fantastic day! See you guys later in video into Ford into 543 valve into of warranty job for now end of transmission.

I will be very shocked if they agree to warranty anything, next they'll say that removing the valve covers voids all warranties even though they requested you to do so. I can see this going to court if your customer wants to go that far to make them take responsibility for their shabby work.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @geoffreysmith3196 says:

I agree with several other commenters here. It's pretty obvious that the engine builder is trying to dodge a warranty claim by demanding needless, time consuming, "diagnostic" work that they hope will either be physically impossible to do with the engine still in the truck, or will be disapproved by the customer, so that the claim will just go away. Kudos to both you and your customer for holding the builder to account for their work. Why was there foreign material found trapped under the driver's side valve cover, next to the cam phaser? Why were all the valve cover bolts over torqued? Why was the old sludge never cleaned out from the undersides of the valve covers, before they were reinstalled? That engine builder has a lot to answer for.

I just finished replacing the timing chain assembly on my Ford E-350. The hardest part of the job was removing the valve covers. Part of the job was easier because the rear of the engine is accessible by removing the rear engine cover, however on the E series the engine sits way further down into the chassis and wheel wells. It took me about 4 hours to remove each valve cover. Even though this is a difficult job, the van is much worse to work on. Great job keeping your temper working on somebody's screw up.

    You named your dog wrong.
He should be called "Dog Unit" instead of "Shop Dog".
Also, put a camera on his neck and see the garage from his point of view.

The cam phasers seem to be an ongoing issue with Ford.. My 18 3.5 Ecoboost had to have them replaced at around 10k miles. They would leak down and lose oil pressure and rattle like crazy at start-up. Ford had to do a recall to fix them. Very invasive procedure as well.. It's a cab off job on my truck! FordBossMe helped me with IDing the problem and kept me up to date on the pending recall before it happened… He's an awesome dude who took his time to chat to me a few times about it. Then at around 20k my TCM took a crap.. out of warranty..That cost me 850 bucks. I'm about done with Ford…

I've heard of people using cut down valve covers to make this sort of thing less messy. In the past, the top of the cylinder heads were flat, oil ran right off.

So next, pat your head and rub your tummy. Viola! Valid warranty claim after ridiculous procedures 😜

Good thing all that oil will keep the frame from rodding out, my 08 4.2 lasted 90 k before the midwest winters ate the middle frame, Otherwise a good truck.

The installer needs to sued for everything they have destroyed. Obviously, they didn't clean the valve covers before switching them over. Then proceeding to destroy the drivers valve cover by using an impact on the coil hold down bolts. Much like when they destroyed the O2 sensor, and left it broken to pieces. I saw a k&n filter oil filter, which does not have anti drain back valve. Only ford filters can be used, due to the horizontal position of the filter. If it's not that, then a cam chain tensioner blew out. Lets not forget the elephant in the room, the plastic bag sitting behind the cam phaser, that once contained said phaser!

Whoever was the final assembler obviously did not care about cleanliness with the valve covers. Someone I would never use again.

If I were a ford guy, at this point I believe I would say "no fomoco fo me."

The exhaust leak should have been repaired because the warranty company may come back and say the noise is the exhaust.

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @billziegmond4943 says:

I would have suggested 1/4 pound of C 4 to effect repair.

I had a 454 chevy rebuilt by Carolina engines. It would lose oil pressure when warmed up. same scenario, had to do mechanical tests sent it back, they sais nothing wrong, but need to run strait 50 weight oil in it. They found no problem, but say they put the thousandth shims in the mains and pressure was good. I miss a good machine shop!

  95. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @ChrisD4335 says:

Who is capable enough to actually get the engine in there and firing but also not capable of screwing down a valve cover without stripping it out and also can't see the paper they left in the engine? I feel like heavy drinking was involved

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @wallyg.2409 says:

They should have taken Ray's word for it. Now everyone can further see the horrendous engines they put out. Paint flying off the valve cover and PAPER in the engine !

I love that Twister reference 😊

  98. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @Mike88GT says:

You voided the warranty by removing the valve covers and running the engine…. Joke's on you!
