In this video I have a look at a Nissan Pathfinder that has a blower motors that likes to work when it wants to. Let's see if we can find out what the heck is wrong with it. -Enjoy!

Last Vehicle I had fan control problems, with I checked the voltage dip on the fan motor with an oscilloscope, and decided that the motor was drawing too much current on start up, as it had taken out the controller/resistor by blowing the thermistor. Replaced both the motor and the controller/resistor. All good and still working after all these months.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gregory Harmon says:

Ahhh…the blower motor resistor. Ford (and others) placed the resistor pack in the air duct to "cool" it. Chipmunks packed the duct full of acorns that were roasted and ignited by the resistor coils. The blower provided plenty of air for the fire with much smoke coming out of the dash vents. Kinda reminded me of an old Cheech & Chong movie.🤣

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Kurtz says:

Interesting presentation in which a " controller " varies the ground resistance of the blower motor based an input or duty cycle.. of the VBC (variable blower control)…..also.interesting here is that the motor worked on "high"..so the controller was able to ground the circuit if the pulse width was wide enough…

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Boorman says:

The motor control is likely a N-MOSFET that is pulsed to provide a ground.

Hey sma. Today i was trying to help a friend get his 2015 explorer inspected. Came in with an evap code. Here in pa, we can run an emissions test with 1 monitor still not run so i thought it would be a simple matter of clear, fill tank, drive. Nope, and heres why im making this comment. Cat monitor went fine, and b4 either o2 heater or o2 monitor. Ive seen this happen to you in one of your videos, but you werent concerned, although you did note that it was odd, cause the repair was made and proven good (dont really remember the repair or this comment would be there). Anyway, He drove me around for over a half hour and about 40 miles trying to get the dang things to go. Friend of mine so we just chatted. His gf called, so i started looking at live data.
car was going open loop and the downstream 02 was dropping to 0 volts intermittently. No fault codes pending or otherwise. Im guessing the 02 sensor is faulty but ill visually inspect b4 repairs as well, he had to go home b4 we could get there. Anyway, though i dont remember the video or what you actually repaired on the vehicle, i was wondering if you had any insight as to whether cat going b4 o2s could indicate something like this. I believe i remember the car you were working on to be a ford explorer too.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andrew Leets says:

I once had a similar issue on a 06 Murano where the blower would take 2 minutes to turn on after starting the car. It took half a day to diagnose because it was a faulty relay mounted on the back of a fuse block. The relay is not shown in the wiring diagram and the only way I found it is because when I reached for and grabbed the fuse block it would cause the blower to turn on.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jake32401 says:

On 90s jeeps it just burns out the switch on the dash when the blower gets old and pulls too many amps

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Chiodetti says:

Ya, definitely check the blower motor for high current. Before electronic blower motor controls, when I found a blower motor pulling down 19 to 22 amps, thats a little high. SOMETIMES, removing the blower and using an compresses air to clean out the motor would lower the current consumption and prolong the motor's life. but inevitably, the motor had to be changed.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ThePerchydog420 says:

Let’s say in a perfect world with everything operating correctly, if you were to turn the ignition on, turn the blower motor on and plug your load tester (bulb) into the two wires going into the blower, would it light up? Just a little confused on the power going into the motor and power coming out. Thanks for creating such awesome content by the way. Huge fan.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars wyattoneable says:

You've become a respected teacher of automotive science and technology in a few short years (as far as YouTube and our access to you goes). I've learned so much from your videos along with others like Mike. It has really made working on cars fun again. Well, coolant leaks. I hate working on anything that leaks. Maybe owning a Jeep and a Harley has done that to me.
