2008 Cadillac DTS 4.6 L V8 Front wheeel Drive: Look at all that now in Normul Cadillac Northstar Fashion: It's leaking a little bit of oil right here. Look at all that. there's some oil on the Nater, oil on the compressor, oil on the belt system, oil on the transmission oil on the oil pan, oil on the subframe, coolant on the subframe, coolant on the exhaust coolant leaking from the water pump housing. It's got Niagara style fluids leaking everywhere.
but it's fine cuz this engine and drivetrain assembly is coming out and then we're going to reseal this entire powertrain unit.
Oil on the oil?
I like these. They drive really nice. Now the repair is a different story..also I wonder why GM decided to make it FWD.
And I thought it's rust proofing oil.
That's why they call you Rainman …you crazy
Never had a 4100?
Biggest pile of poo released by Cadillac, Northstar garbage. Repair costs are higher than car value.
What does this job cost?
Goodluck 😂
Thanks. I'll keep watching Ray, but I'll keep my Teslas, thank you very much.
I have never minded working on Cadillac Northstars. Thats a good paycheck right there and its not going to beat you up like an Audi or something like that would.
This engine has car ebola.
05+ didint have the hg issues as much as the earlier ones, but they all leak oil from the rear main seal
Junk that engine and install a 5.3 from a front wheel drive impala.
I must of been lucky I had the 4.6 in my 99 DeVille de elegance never leaked oil had to replace the water pump and thermostat so i changed the radiator to a big shiny one i that was from one of my uncle's old race cars i drove it to Colorado a few times from Michigan i was young and dumb used to jump for a reason to work on it Royal purple for oil change, new air filter and spark plugs changed every few months for no reason I remember buying additives for the gas just because I thought the bottle looked cool😂
The timing cover bolts for probably just loose in the coolant leak was probably just probably just needs a water pump and you want to take off the whole engine and transmission come on 😂
I owned mine for all of 3 weeks
Dang how much is all that going to cost 💲
my friend had one I replaced several things trying to clear a code. while talking to a real mech. he asked me if it was between these certain years I said it was he said it had a bad wiring harness that sat ON the engine block and the casing of the wire would harden and break shorting it out thus giving me a completely different code problem (I never did finish fixing that code problem) it stayed off long enough for him to pass smog
Why would anyone even think about spending the amount of money it takes to remove and reseal that terribly designed gm garbage? It’s old enough that the designed falling apart of the vehicle is happening. It can very easily turn into a disaster every month or two type car. And every one knows that the interior is anything but quality or “good wearing “ 😂😂
All domestic cars leek oil all over, old and new. It is the brand name of our American ingenuity.
The repair is going to exceed the value of the car.
I only worked in the light Auto Industry for a few yrs before switching to OTR Truck , Ag Industry then moved over to Heavy Equipment. So having experience in GM & Detroit Diesel as long as they are Leaking Fluids your good to go – it's when they Stop Leaking the problems occur 🤔🤣. I find the more recent usage of Oil Catch Cans kinda funny , as one private fleet that had an account with us . They had an older Freightliner Truck that had a 8V71 Detroit that got red tagged by Dot for excessive oil leakage . The truck came in on a hook with the undercarriage just covered with Eng oil . The owner stated a rebuild was outta the question at the time , but he needed the truck operational . Boss had me hook up hoses to the crankcase blow by tubes an run them back the length of the frame rails to back of truck . From there the hoses were connected to coffee cans that the Driver was supposed to empty out daily . When it finally reached the point they were adding nearly 2 gals of oil a day to the engine he finally shut the truck down an it went to auction.
Move along! Nothing to see here!! These were sharing BMW leak sources! If they were rwd they’d be worth keeping around!
Belongs in a junkyard, that Northstar engine is garbage.
Actually it’s a easy engine to work on like the 4100 it was job security
Those caddies are so nice to drive.. really the last of a breed, it just sucks that they had the n* otherwise they would have been a much better car..
What about the head gaskets ? Oh and please put all new chains and tensioners and guides.
To bad you couldn't swap in the LH2 version or, better yet, the LC3 version. Those ones are a lot built better I think, especially the LC3.
This thing OK for fluids?
Looks at ground, Yup. Got plenty.
Needs a 6.0 lr LS motor back in it!
Did they say 4.6 like a Ford ?
Stop don’t do it. By resealing you will lose the under body rust protection that naturally occurs on all north star engines 😂
I hope you got the payment in advance
After resealing everything, I hope you flush the cooling system and replace the antifreeze with factory Toyota coolant. Always leave it better than before.
Self lubricating parts, what is the problem then?
You are a brave soul I won't touch those engines
If you ever need to drain your pasta, this is the car to have cause it clearly can't hold liquids.
One headlight assembly costs more then an engine.
I'm getting to the point that I just want to pull every engine out rather than bust my knuckles in tight spaces.
RAYYYY!!!!!!! CADDY DEALERS DON,T RESEAL THESE!!!! THEY REPLACE THE ENGINE..PANDORAS BOX!!!!
Runsome silicon around, it'll double the value
Typical Northstar, leaking from every orifice.
People gawk about this, but honestly I'd rather spend 10-20k on a car I love than 70k on one I'll regret.
Keep up the great videos, Ray. I have learned a little from them.
The 4.6 Cadillac is not leaking. This car is cycling through an external lubrication/ anti rust process.
after it rolls out, itll be back in 60 days with the next northstar nitemare, the endless moneypit.
why would you waste all that time and their money
Oh these nightmare motors! I'm amazed customer approved engine reseal but it'll be a great video series.
That re-seal job costs more than the car is worth.
Oil leaks are just the manufacturers anti rust package. Lol
Good luck Sir
MY CONDOLENCES RAY
I believe you mean rust inhibitor…
Don't do anything, ship it to New York.
All that oil is rust proofing.
All of those leak every fluid, they are the worst engines to work on also
“If thy has a leak, thy is from gm” unreliabiliations 3:2-4
Rust preventative
Death Star Engine
I bought one of those damn things back in the day for $500 because they told me blown head gasket. That was BEFORE the shop ran it and broke the piston and bent the rod. 24 hours to remove the engine and transmission from the bottom. I found one connecting rod in town and a piston on eBay. Put the engine back together, got it all back in the car and it ran good. Saw that car 10 years later and it was STILL GOING! A high school girl was driving it and I knew it was the same one because it still had that same ps belt squeak I could never cure. Or rather I didn’t give 2 sh*ts after the battle royal I had with the car before. Advice for people contemplating buying and fixing one of those bastards; RUN AWAY!!
I had a customer that had one of these turds, we spent hours and hours looking for their oil leak and it turned out the block was porous and the oil would just seep out of it under pressure.
Turned these away at our shop.
GM quality shining brightly again. It's a good thing we bailed them out in 2008 and then gave all the union workers raises a couple of times since.
Use the stud kit
Drop an LS in it😂
I was shopping for an 1982 new Eldorado with the fancy aluminum V8 $$$$$$
Actually purchased a year old 82 Toranado brogham (top model) with under 10,000 miles. Saved over $10,000 and got an iron 5 liter V8 that was almost trouble free. Essentially no oil consumption even at 130,000 miles.
I got the same car with a better engine
Those aluminum V8s were really bad about head gasket failures. But we didn't know that in 1982.
Don’t forget to take off the main cap tray to change the gaskets that go there
ANOTHER CADILLAC FAILURE..
Does it identify as a BMW engine? That thing is wet.
Another GM master stroke. Iron duke, HT4100, Northstar…..jesus when will they ever learn
Waste of money.
I know where ther is a northstar caddy for $800 guy "claims it has 88000k
Someone will buy it
to me that car isn't worth it.. Must of been grandmas car
If it was my car, I think I would just buy pig mats by the case
Did they finally sort out the head bolt issue by 2008? 😂
I would love to see videos come out on this tear down and rebuild
Ooooh I’m excited for this!! LFG!
Why would the customer want to do this. I'm a technician and i would get a new vehicle i hate the north star 😂
I watched a friend of mine work on one of those. First thing he said was, "I hate this engine. "
Instead of the faulty gaskets use RTV on every seal location
You're right about one thing, the only way to work on those is pull them out. Can't do much of anything on them when they're in the car. Good luck, you're going to need it.
Well lubed
That is going to be a very large bill for a lot of small leaks.
That thing leaks more than a Harley !
boy… you're gonna soak this one for everything you can, right?
About whether it's worth fixing: you can't buy a big car today for the cost of repairs. If repairs keep it on the road 5 more years it'll be worth it.
Did the customer authorize the head bolt upgrade?
Its rust proofing itself lol
You had me cracking up on this one. 😂
Let's just hope it will be worth your time. Better get me some popcorn and a drink.😂
You are a glutton for punishment. Nothing good can come from these repairs.
You having fun with these shorties .I'M NOT
Not worth fixing and being married to it
Seal it in concrete!
You warranty those oil leaks? Brave man.
Ray..Isn't this engine some kind of a split crankcase design?
It leaks like a Detroit 6v or 8v diesel..😅
Easy money right there
The oil negates the coolant!
If it starts leaking at any way, I'd sell it ASAP!
Have videos now gone from repairs to minor service and diag videos?
She's a leaker. Mind you, Toyota's really are much worse.
