Thank you Hello everybody, Good day to you and welcome back! Glad you guys are here! This is a 1981 DeLorean Starting the engine customer States Electrical Diagnosis: At 22 671.5 miles on the odometer, the time circuits have become inoperable and do not power on. uh Additionally, uh, we don't know if it's going to be related or if it's something different, but the flux capacitor has also malfunctioned and is no longer operating. So we're gonna go ahead and get this thing backed out. We're going to swing her into the shop and then we will begin to diagnose this particular.
DeLorean So stay tuned because this is gonna be a very good video opening. Z Hoods foreign. no power steering? All right. let's get this thing on into the shop.
All right, we're in a little bit. Uh, I Think too far to the right. Let's just kick her left a little bit and ease her on up. There we go.
That's good. Center of gravity looks good or good condition here. Let's go ahead and power this unit down. We'll hop out popsy hood and then go from there.
Yeah, we're trying to actuate these assemblies here and we just cannot seem to get a response. Yeah, there's definitely something going on with the electrical system in this, uh, particular vehicle. here. the switches seem to operate and they Flash and throw circuits and uh, the breakers open up.
so you definitely need to figure out what the problem is. Okay, let's go ahead and try it again. Powering on? Okay, yeah, as soon as we operating normally. interesting, you know I'll tell you what I want to do here.
I'm going to power this off and I'm going to head over to the other side. uh I've got more more circuitry on this side and I think we need to inspect that and look for anything that's a loose loose connections or things of that nature. If we don't see anything obvious, uh, sticking out to us right in our face, we're going to go ahead and switch Back to Basics and that's going to be to check for uh, proper powers and grounds and make sure our battery is in good condition and the terminals are clean and tight. So sometimes Back to Basics is just how it's got to be.
All right. Good to go here. So we've got uh, got a series of toggle switches here that power on the system. Uh, we should also take note that at this time the flux capacitor is indeed fluxing and it appears to be operating at the proper frequency.
So I don't think we have a component issue. I Think we have a power supply issue that's probably our our main uh, main situation here. Our main issue here. So let's go back and recheck all of our fuses.
We'll go with our primary to shut down our system. They all feel good, they have good detents Christmas tree, rear deck lamps, etc etc. and of course our refrigerant and again, we're good. Okay now I'm gonna do the wiggle test on all of our switches here and make sure we don't lose power just by manipulating these switches slightly.
If one of them has a bad connection, it can shut down the circuit. Uh, if agitated by wiggling and that does not appear to be the case. So I'm not really. Ooh, they're low on juice. they don't have the power shutter back down here and our warnings are gone. Okay, what's going on with this thing? What's going on here? All right. So we seem to have agitated the system slightly. Let's go ahead and power this unit down one more time.
Uh, we're gonna hop on out of the passenger seat here and let's get into the depths of this thing's electrical system and start with the basics. Uh I Think we need to check our electron containment unit and I believe that's going to be over on the other side. Got it closed up here? Let's go ahead and bust out our meter. I've just checked uh service data and found battery location to be behind the driver's cockpit area here.
So let's slide that seat forward and I believe what we're looking for is down here inside of this console. Uh, containment section? Yeah, here we go. I've got something here. Okay, kind of a tight squeeze though.
I Tell you here, let's put that over here on one of these. uh, hydrogen fuel cells so we can see what we're up to and we've gotta. Yeah, we've got a quite a bit of a lot of circuits in here. There's a lot going on.
Uh, looks like a lot of powers and grounds. Let's go ahead and check our primary uh wing nut there on our ground side that felt pretty tight I See minimal corrosion in there, if any at all. Yeah, the positive side, that's also tight that's looking good. Let's just get a a voltage reading real quick of our primary battery and then, uh, then we'll go from there.
Come here. All right. We're on the power and ground contact right there and we've got good resting battery voltage 12.42 volts. That's a that's pretty good as far as I'm concerned.
Okay, all right so we can safely assume we don't have an issue with the low voltage circuits on this unit. So let's go ahead and get a little deeper into it and see if we cannot get some test leads on some of the high voltage circuits with inside of the capacitor box. Maybe we have a resistor overload here and that's causing, uh, causing circuit breakers to trip. So let's get this, uh, this cover open here real quick exposing our high voltage circuits and we can get a meter on these guys and see, uh, see if we have an issue like a ground fault or some kind of high resistance.
Within These Actuators All right back to the meter. Again, we're going bolts and I'm going to go ahead and ground our negative lead to this alligator clip lead and we're just going to go ahead and ground this thing like straight to body ground right there. So now all we need to do is go around with our positive and we can probe uh, the feed wires on the flux capacitor and we're looking for a voltage drop all right. Meter, You go over there again, Ground lead connected to body ground and we've got our hunt right here. Let's go ahead and cycle the system. Shut it down, Power back on. Okay. came back on interesting and let's try to cycle it one more time.
Powering down. Okay. there we go. Come on.
Wake up. Start. you piece of junk. Start there.
it goes all right. So powered back on something wrong with the steering wheel seems to have a theme going on here. Anyway, we're off track on our diag. let's get back to our flux capacitor unit here and uh, make sure we have the right voltages.
We're looking for 12 volts roughly battery voltage. We don't have any other systems running except for the ignition, so let's see what we've got. Okay, let's just check each pin. you know? Meter says oh, lost it all right.
9.6 on uh on this leg of the capacitor. All right. let's test the uh, the second unit right here. Let's get on our test terminal pin and 11.72 That's a lot better.
better than 1068 one more time. Another test on our third leg right here. and yeah, look at that 1172 again. So we've got.
We've got two units at 11.72 and one at 1068, so that's uh, that's a little odd. Let's go back and recheck our 1068, our bottom unit there and make sure it's exactly the same. All right, coming in one more time on our probe. Here there we go.
and let's check our meter. Oh there we go. Look at that 968.. Oh, that's interesting.
Look, Before we had a reading of a negative 968, Now we're positive Voltage 968. there's definitely a, uh, some kind of issue here with uh with that other section of this flux capacitor unit. I Think we need to send this thing out and have that remanufactured? That's we've got a confirmed kill, that's a diagnosis on this unit. We had 1160, 1160 and then like 968 and then negative 968.
So that shouldn't be doing that on that third leg right there. and it's going to cause a huge voltage drop on our high voltage side and it can definitely be the cause of what's called shutting down all these time circuits here. Let's go ahead and close this unit up and get everything buttoned up for now. I Don't think that my parts store is going to have a remanufactured capacitor unit available to us right now, so it's probably going to be special order or I may have to end up removing this unit entirely and then sending it out for rebuild.
So here we go. Get that guy tight, click, and again, look at that time circuit. shut down when we're looking. Unbelievable.
All right. Come on, you turn back on start. Perfect. So yeah.
okay, yeah, there's something going on with that clock spring too. Okay, so seeing as how we found an issue, found a problem very quickly I don't want to get overzealous and assume that that is the problem. And we did see. we did see the system failing even while it was testing.
uh with decent voltage. we switched. We had switched back to a positive voltage on that third leg down there. and yet the system still, uh, it seems to have failed and shut down unexpectedly. So just because that is a problem, that doesn't mean that the problem. So let's go through and visually inspect the rest of these low voltage connections and circuits here. We're just going to give them all the wiggle test to make sure that each one of, uh, all the electrical connections is clean and tight and free of corrosion. These all look pretty good here.
Everything's tight there. Again, the fuel cell seems to be secured. We have a level indicator of full, so that's in good shape. There valves are open, there's no pinches in the lines.
Our Reserve plutonium seems to be in good condition here, so that's not really a concern. It's also worth noting that all system LEDs are indicating normal operation at this time. We do have minor cause for concern that could be the resistance that we were looking for earlier regarding that other circuit fault, but it seems to be a very low level and intermittent so we can touch base on that if need be at a later time. I Don't think that's a that's really a huge problem at this point.
All of our wiring looks good I don't see anything shaved, eaten by rats, bugs, or any kind of deterioration or Decay so that's all in good shape. This harness looks good. our coolant line looks good, these switches over here all had good detents, and all of our wiring here is in good condition again, along with the coolant hose. Very good.
Okay, look at all of our external circuits and just give these a quick visual inspection to make sure all this is in good shape. We can see we've got some soldered connections here and that solder that may have been reflowed at one point. It does not appear to be the original solder to this unit, but uh yeah, yeah, it's not original to the car. Uh, we can see here: this capacitor has a model year engraving of 55 Alpha so it's going to be the first half of the year 1955.
So since this is a 1981 model, these could not have been the original units that went on this car. That explains the solder that we see in all these electrical connections here, but they, uh, they are secured and wired properly. So I think that's in good shape? Not really much of a concern. Moving on to our turbine exhaust fan that looks pretty good.
This actually looks like an EGR cooler for a 6.7 diesel. Let's go ahead and pop open our Mr Fusion and just make sure that the intake path is clean and free of all instructions Here that guy open here. This is the earlier Uh Plutonium model. It was the buy Fuel and we can see that the intake port on our plutonium is in good condition here, so that's not going to be cost for concern.
It's all good. and this is why they had a design change. It was hard to get the radiation lid resealed. There we go. Okay, all right. Moving around to the right rear corner. Uh, we can see our capacitors are in good shape here. All three additional fuel cells appear to be in good shape.
There's no traces of leaks anywhere from either end. Again, our circuitry is in good condition and we have another appearance of our 1955 capacitor units right here. Our heat sinks are in good shape. wires look good.
intake side of our EGR looks good. All this Plumbing is in good condition for our Mr Fusion Clamps look good. Overhead inverters look good. Okay, yeah.
I Don't think. uh. I Don't think any of this is going to be the problem here. Oh, there's a problem.
We've got a loose capacitor. that's uh, that's no bueno. Let's get that guy to tighten back up as quickly as possible. Where's my screwdriver? See what we got here? Big Phillips that's the one.
Alrighty, let's get that thing torqued back down the specs so it's safe. That could be the reason that we lost that third leg on our clutch capacitor inside the vehicle. Torque on that click. There we go.
That's good. Very nice. Alrighty, hood is popped. Let's go ahead and open up our engine compartment, revealing our internal combustion engine.
And we could go ahead, give this unit an inspection, and then check its lubrication system here. We see a lot of the original components, including our mechanical fuel injection system. You guys see that right there. Got our fuel line coming in.
Looks like we've got one feed line to this injector block, and then it's got its individual six output injection lines for the fuel injectors down in the intake manifold. You guys see those down there one way down there, one back there, one other one in the back, and this is a V6 internal combustion engine. You can see the other six, well, one of the injectors right there. Uh, two.
and one of them is buried under our intake assembly right here. Okay, all right, I Do see a few more electrical components in this general area right over here. so let's go ahead and we'll pop open this inspection panel here. Make sure everything's in good shape inside of this area.
Okay, we've got our ignition coil. two wire coil. got our output to our distributor somewhere. All these connections look good.
Those look like uh GM connectors of some sort December 4th, 1981. that's its manufacture date. No one's been in there for a while. just gonna put that back All right Where that goes.
All right. We can see our exhaust system down there. Looks like it's got a newish Nader It's a one wire alternator see radiator. Hoses look good.
top looks good. belts look good. Water pump looks good. Got a new DMC compressing unit that is new.
It must have went back to Uh 81 to pick that up. It's probably hard to find. Let's check our Uh AC Service ports while we're here. Make sure we don't have any leakers that looks good. A little bit of dye in there might recheck that later on. Okay, we'll cap those guys. Back off again. Our fuel intake line also braided.
These connections look good. Is that another ignition coil? What is that? Yeah. Fuel pressure regulator. Like big solenoid, it's on the fuel line I Think it's our oil fill.
Okay, all right, let's get this thing on the rack and take a look down underneath. All right, let's go ahead and get our rack set here. I Need to use caution. We don't want to damage the undercarriage.
Spin this down low, see what we've got for a lift? Point down here. Uh, not much. Actually, this is odd. The bottom of this is, uh, looks like it's all fiberglass and it's flat bottom.
I Don't really want to put my my raised edges on my lift on that flat bottom. There's really nothing to release it with. Um I know I know what? I'll do? There's one right there here. We'll put a put a block of wood in there that'll spread the load out there.
We go. Okay, let's get the other three. We get some wood set up and then we'll get this thing up in the air. DeLorean Moving on up.
Black subscribe button. Hit her up in the air air out. give us a shake, let's make sure she's stable. she's gonna shake the back.
We're gonna check down below looking good. Yep, it's stable all the way up. Check out her underneath carriage right about there and down on our locks for safety. Click Okay, we got an engine oil test filter wrench tool.
What we're going to do is go ahead and pull the drain plug out of this unit. We're gonna spill the engine oil. grab ourselves a sample for Laboratory Testing at Blackstone Labs Not sponsored. That's just what I use and then we'll get this thing refilled.
I Think we have some mobile one 20 W 50 weight I believe that is the specified engine oil type and and weight. Oh mosquito, Oh, you're dead stupid bio weapon trying to bite me in the leg. Anyway, let's get this thing over under our car and then uh, we'll get that drain plug pulled. ASAP All right, A-rod's gonna take care of our oil sample.
Grab our sample here. so oh too much. Ah, it's a mess Here we go. Thanks Buddy and I'll go ahead and pull this filter off all right.
This angle is a little weird because I got this plate in the way. but I think I can squeeze this guy in. give it a push here yo! Nice more speed that guy off. he's got an AC Delco GM filter on there pf53.
Cool. Let's let that drain for a while. Alrighty Engine oil filter coming in, pull off the protective layer and I'll grab some draining oil from the pan here on the thingy. we'll give a little bit of lubricant to our seal.
Here we go. spin that guy back on. click Okie Dokes We've got some spillage gravity. got some spillage going on here so let's clean this stuff off.
Shiny! Oh it's beautiful I'm even getting off old spillage we've been neglected I think I found bare aluminum emergency run for it Marty Save the rest of the pan all right? So while this thing's still draining, let's give it a full visual inspection on. the tires are looking good. Got all of our lug nuts. Undercarriage is good. We've got our transaxle assembly. A little bit of built up oil in here I Wonder if that's got a leak? Maybe it had a leak and either way that's okay. We've got some shift linkage going on that's going from up front through this tube area. getting more fuel lines and things of that nature.
Got large coolant lines right here for the time circuits. If that flows forward to the secondary radiator, you see front suspension looks good. Friction material looks good. That ball joint's a little rough looking to the boots torn right there, but the upper is okay.
Springs are good. that's our AC accumulator slash receiver dryer for climate control. horns for safety. Looks like the steering gear is fairly newish.
Very simple unit if it's got new fans, electronic fans. Okay, yeah, so it's been maintained over the years. This is good. Very good to see.
okay upper radiator hose. that one's looking good. It's visible over here that all looks good. All these connections are in good shape.
Okay, very nice. You notice the flat bottom for aerodynamic activity that allows you to reach maximum speed in order for the time circuits to engage. Okay. Brake line running back.
very clean unit. Trans mounts look good. Okay, that's our that's our speed sensor. It's this unit right here.
I Don't know what that is. Fuel filter? yeah that's a fuel filter. Yeah. CB Axle's looking good.
The control arms are good, brake rotors are good, shock absorbers, not so healthy. Look at that. is that Neoprene on this side? Yeah, how's the other side? It's in similar condition. Yeah yeah, that one's starting to film.
Part two: Okay, yeah, not a huge deal, but something that should be taking a look at uh in the future pun intended I made jokes. Alrighty, Well I think our oil is about done draining. let's fetch our uh, our plug. Where to go? Green plug? Oh you got her little beans skill.
That unit back up. Wow. look at here. It has a cork gasket for the oil pan.
Check that out, you see the little flakes in it? Yep. definitely pork. All right shiny. Round two I will leave it cleaner than when I found it.
Very nice. Okay let's clear our goodies out of here. Goody's going and up off the locks. Let's go ahead, unlock the unit and let her down all the way down.
There we go all right. let's cruise around to this side and pop open our engine oil fill. It's gonna go through the driver's side valve cover here. Oh I was wrong.
We don't have mobile one. we have the one with the B on it. 20w50 weight for racing and classic cars. The Br1 formula which pop fun. Don't stop, don't sue me. Pringles We're just gonna go full on pouring things on this one. All right. let it ride long range pouring things.
there's no spill, addition and I failed. drink it up little DeLorean Whoa. I almost spit it back out. Is that the right hole, you know? I was thinking that, um I didn't actually uh, look that up in the service manual I mean it's either the right one or I just put oil in the transmission.
We're about to swim like a cat. that's got the oil can on it. It might be it. 25th is thick and you can feel it when you pour it.
It's very, uh, that's five, six and seven and it almost looks like gear oil. Okay, that's seven. Let's start it and check it real quick. Like just plug that thing in there.
We go All right. let's hop back inside of the cabin. Here, we're going to stopping the engine. All right.
Let's hop back in this unit, clutch it in and key on neutral position. Begin engine restarting sequence now. Oh, got no puddles. Filter looks good in that area.
I'd say we're in good shape. back into the cabin, let's shut her down, and then, uh, we'll check our oil level powering down. All right. There's our dipstick.
Let's give that guy a tug, pull her out, wipe her down, dip it in, and we're about looking like a half a quart low. Okay, no problemo that dipstick back in there. Pop our cap one more time and half a quart ER 2050 coming in 0.5 quarts. Now, the filters already been primed when we started the engine so we do not need to restart it again before checking.
It is what was in the oil pan has now been displaced into the old filter. so the filters full. The old galleys are full, passages are full. We're just measuring the depth of the pan and right on the money.
I Think beautimous. All right. No. I Did not forget about my spillage.
All right. Round. Two years of spillage is about to be disappeared by oil sludge running low. Running low.
All righty. let's get our engine oil sample put away into its containment vessel. We're going to send this off for analysis later on. so our engine oil is good.
our flux, capacitor, time circuit situation uh, has a direction to move forward in again. I'm gonna have to go ahead and locate some parts or pull that unit up for Reman. We've got to call the part suppliers and see what is available for this time travel unit and what is not. so.
uh. That being said, as of right now, we are out of time and I'm going to go ahead and use that opportunity to close this video out right now. And I will do that as always by thanking each and every one of you guys to watch this video. I Know it was boring and I know it's just an oil change, but I certainly hope you enjoyed this video.

The funny part is that when you have an electrical issue on a car, you may look at a wiring diagram for circuit description and information. With after market upgrades, it gets complicated. This level of upgrades could be a nightmare. If banging on the dash helps, a loose connection is probable.

looks like you didnt clean the mating surface of oil filter before you put new filter on i always wipe it clean and dry and use new oil to lube the new gasket

This thing was the most over priced piece of junk back in the day.. I had a local customer who owned one. It only had like 35000 miles on it , and not a single thing worked on the car. The parts cost three times as much as normal, especially seeing all the drive train was nothing more than a VOLVO to start with , and not even the good VOLVO . What a shame. I remember that the AMC Eagle Premiere also used that same drive line and they also were a pile of junk…. You would think as much as the body cost to build that a better drive line would have been picked for this so called sports car! Instead of the 3.0 v6 Volvo that wasnt even turbo charged. Heck I'm not to sure the car could do the 88 mph like in the movie portrayed?
I;ve just learned from almighty Wikipedia that they first intended to use a mid placed Wankel engine sourced from Comotor, a Citroen/NSU joint venture.
That old PRV engine suddenly doesn't look so bad. If only they'd given it a little more power.

Well, if you can get the time travel working, you can have fixed all of the other issues MONTHS ago! Great video. Would have made a great April fool's video. You can still sorce parts for those cars from the DMC company that is in the US. Watched a video about the company and they were trying to set up a custom build company as they have all the stock from the original manufacturer.

Great video Ray. Loved the diagnostic session, looks like it was super fun. To clarify, this was my personal Delorean years ago. I personally converted it myself and it was later sold to a collector in Los Angeles. He owned it for a while and it was then sold via Ebay to who I believe is the current owner now located in Florida. Sadly, there have been a ton of alterations done to it since that time (some better than others, but nothing that was a part of my original personal build).
As the armchair experts have pointed out, this car is absolutely NOT a screen used car used in the original BTTF Trilogy. I totally understand how you probably heard different from the current owner. It's a real shame that some people need to overstate the history of a car that is already awesome enough as it is.
I have made a Delorean that was screen used. I built Seth Macfarlane's Delorean Time Machine which was used in A Million Ways to Die in the West, right along with Doc Brown himself. So, I'm certainly not complaining.

You know O'Reilly Auto Parts sells the Flux Capacitor. Part# 121g Line: EB. They do however state that the part is not available for purchase. It's actually a pretty funny writeup by O'Reilly. Love the video, what a great opportunity!
You need to by a flux cap checker and Mr Fusion diag machine. Does it have a hoover conversion done? And….but first, are you certified to perform work on this type of vehicle?
