In this video I take you along as I replace the rear brake cables on a 2004 Toyota Tacoma with a manual transmission. Please refer to your factory service manual for proper repair procedures.

Yah drum brakes always seem intimidating..

Just found the channel, as I may need to do this--or have it done. IDK how you do the job so eloquently— Normally very second word is usually profane, when trying to fix my vehicles.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scott Clukey says:

I really appreciate your channel, when I was removing the bolts on top of frame, it was seized, so I figured out where it was from the top, drilled a 1-1/2" just above the bolt on the frame an placed a rubber body plug back in the hole, so "if" this repair needs to be done again it won't be a PIA.
HOPE This helps someone down the line.

I am currently doing this job. My 13 year old Tacoma living in Canada did not release the bolts as easily. I broke 5 bolts, and had to drill out those top frame ones. Now I have a question that I didn't see how you did. I also hooked up the cables before hooking them into the equalizer, but have now unhooked again but still can't get the cables onto the equalizer. It's a tomorrow problem now before I start throwing tools. Beer time!

Eric, in the video previous to this one where you started this job you talked about owning your own business and some customers telling you what to do as you are a poor businessman. You mentioned you own your own home, shop, cars etc. I feel for you as we own a small business too and never fails that somebody else is trying to tell you how to run your business. Just ignore those idiots. Keep doing what you do my friend and everything will be fine.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars gregroy rizzuto says:

They're not that bad most of them you got to take the center console out

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Wheeler says:

The thing I remember about drum brakes is when you got them wet you were in for an exciting ride.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Controllerpleb says:

I wouldn't feel bad about using a zip tie instead of that blind bolt. You can get zip ties that are 3/8in wide and they won't rust in place either.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars andrewkiwi1 says:

The earlier hiluxes had rear brakes that were a lot easier to take apart and put together. Its a bit of an asshole to get those shoe retainers to locate and turn to lock sometimes. They are popular in New Zealand so you see them on a regular basis.

Black and forever sticky undercoat… Could be Hammerite Waxoyl maybe?

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Highly Polished Turd says:

I love your advice about drum brakes.. Only do one side at a time.. Yeah, I made that mistake.

    ONCE!!!

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars CTSCAPER says:

I've been using a slotted screwdriver to get to the bottom of the anti-seize, I never thought of cutting the container, I will next time. That shows I'm not a pro.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gail Galusky says:

Hi! Oh my god, thank you for putting this up. Now I don't feel like such a shlub for having this done at the dealership, and not doing it myself. It's winter here in Indiana, it's cold, wet, I'm sick with a chest cold, I don't have a lift and would have to do this on my back in my garage, and I'm a 59 year old scrawny broad. I've done lots of auto maintenance in my time, including a VW overhaul or two, so I'm no stranger to the dirt, grease, and busted knuckles. I bought this 2006 Tacoma stick at the end of Sept. 2018, and when I went to pick it up at the dealership, it took 3 guys to get the e-brake released. That should have set off a mental alarm at that time. Watching you work on this thing restored my faith in the fact that there are at least some mechanics out there that raise their work to the level of an art form. It was a thing of beauty, and therefore, a joy forever. Keep on keepin' on.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GNX157 says:

Thank god you got to do this on shoes and drum that were bedded in. New drums and shoes would likely not have held the truck in place with the emergency brake, and would of needed bedding in first.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GNX157 says:

Omg I can't believe you put the brakes back together with the cables not connected inside. You had a good idea leaving the drums off, but a little too late lol. Better to have left the cables off back there and the brakes all apart too while you hooked it up inside, then put the brakes back together like a normal brake job would go.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Sutphen says:

I appreciate watching and learning…educating oneself to understand what it takes in effort and treasure to maintain a vehicle and particularly in this case, the parking cable replacement, …the bitter medicine ( repair bill estimate ) is easier to take !

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Chiodetti says:

Maybe the bottom has fluid film!
I never knew about that product till I saw you use it, and we have it here in Palmdale Ca at Lowe's! WOW! Who knew! We don't have the weather like you, but I know there's places that I can use it similar to WD-40 use. Great Video!

The last inch of grease means it's time to buy more. It's like a dipstick that doesn't go all the way down to the bottom of the pan….I guess.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jack Jacke says:

Wow you got break clean hooked up with a hose now? lol

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nicholas Brown says:

    Use ratcheting wrenches
