In a previous video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22Ra51_X7u8&t we had a look at a Dodge Ram that came in multiple problems and low and behold it was a pretty simple diagnosis. It's to bad the customer got ripped off by the other shop. In this video I pop in the new ignition switch and verify the repair. -Enjoy!

I myself actually have a 2000 dodge ram quad cab long bed 1500 4×4 Laramie slt with the 5.9 litre 360 magnum v8. Mine does not have power mirrors, overhead compass/outside Temp display and or the nicer woodgrain type trim mine is black and don't stop anything from working so not a problem for me..I've had people before tell me well like my 94 Z71 Silverado extended cab short bed put in a custom dash trim accessory kit, maybe something like carbon fiber look. Not a big fan of the wood type trim anyway so why… mine is not leather it's dark mist gray cloth, and my truck is black I like the blue on that one, mine is probably a little cleaner truck it's got some rust starting but not completely rotted out.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars txc500 says:

How can you know if a shop can diagnose issues like this? I've called shops around me for a pw/pl electrical issue and either they don't want it or one just said "we got a guy that does that kind of stuff". Not very convincing.

Fun Fact: When I was in the Navy, I took a regular razor blade (brand new) and was going to use it to cut a line. It was really weird, the line didn't cut, and nothing happened, didn't even cut a little. I looked at the blade and had the dull end against the line. Went to doc after that one.

Those ignition switches are cool and all, until the lock cylinder or key wears out. Then both have to be replaced because you can't turn the key to remove one from the other. I learned this working at Oreilly.

Back in the 60's, an ignition switch was a simple on/off (and rarely failed). My first job was delivering auto parts and the idiot I was working with actually lost the keys to his truck. I was sent out and did the classic yank-the-three-wires-and-strip-them-with-a-knife-and-jump-the-igniton to get him back to the shop. Just like in the movies!

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stephen Gomez says:

These Dodge trucks are extremely easy to steal, that was the first thing I had to replace in our Dodge truck when it was stolen was the ignition switch they literally just use a screwdriver and break that little plastic thing and pop the lock cylinder out and start it with a screwdriver The same screwdriver that they punched the door lock with.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Arild Andersen says:

We need more honest mechanics like you Eric. Great job here in Norway as well.

I got a slightly more on-topic life lesson.
"If you can only learn one thing, learn to recognize when you don't know."
Hopefully, if you recognize that you don't know, you'll go learn, or go get someone who does know.
If you don't, well then you're a jerk and I consider it my job to find and avoid people who knowingly speak or act on something they are uninformed about.

As you can probably guess, I don't like most politicians, and our (thankfully former) president was someone that I would actively avoid hearing their voice.
Luckily our current president seems to be at least mostly a logical and reasonable person who is capable of giving the office of President the respect it deserves.

I wish the "Don't Be A Jerk" motto worked here where I live.
The local shops want $400.00 for the clockspring and another $650.00 for the labor on a 2007 Dodge Nitro – when the shop that quoted that repair, had broken the clockspring themselves when they replaced the "ball bearings" because they didn't have a grease fitting on them.
    Thieves.
They saw my wife's friend (a woman) and took her to be dry cleaned.
    Jerks & thieves!

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars rhoonah says:

I had a Z24 back in the day and something came loose in the column where the wheel would flop all over the place. So I took it to a "mechanic" and he "fixed" it. Well, the wheel didn't flop around but the horn, directionals and 4-way flashers no longer worked. He tried to claim that it had nothing to do with what he did. I was like "you took the steering column apart and now nothing in the steering column works… it isn't like my radio stopped working". Well he couldn't figure it out and he had to pay another mechanic to diagnose and repair it. So I just started taking my cars to the other mechanic that knew what he was doing just like many people appear to do when they come to South Main to get their cars fixed right.
