In this video I bring you along as I help Josh with an all to common issue. The rear lower control arm bolt has a tendency to get rusted in place on these Subaru's. I use the torch method because I have access to one. You can use a sawzall too it just takes a little longer.
-Enjoy!

Why do I hear my own voice in the background saying: "Come to Southern New Mexico Eric O and family……..NO Rust, Only Dirt"……..
Best fire wrencher under the sun
Eric O. is number one
โInstallation is the reverse of removal.โ
Itโs never as easy as you make it look. That should be the disclaimer at the end of your videos haha
๐
EO is that subframe still ok to ship?
Great info. Keepem comin. Thanks sir
The engine cradle or whatever is in front of the bolt bracket doesn't look too healthy like it is on its way out.
No oxyacetylene and only one one pair hands means I use the saws all and new bolt method. Often the amount of room to do the cut is limited but is compensated by the amount of swearing being unlimited.
looks like a two hour bolt for the home mechanic.
Do you use that same fire extinguisher to tone down the flames when barbecuing?
So glad to see that Josh is letting his apprentice get his hands dirty a bit more around the shop!
I'd be more concerned about that rusted out swing arm that it's attached to!๐
Between this channel, and project farm, i stay pretty informed.
shout out to PROJECT FARM i always buy the good stuff thanks to his testing videos
Diablo, isn't that what cat thieves use?
Love your videos and excellent information. We've had problems hearing you sometimes (microphone issue maybe)?? Don't want to miss anything.. We love you and beautiful Mrs. O… Always look forward to her smiling face and sweet talk between you.. โคโค
That subframe isnt in good shape either lol
Easy peasy lemon squeezy
Terry the Torch
Thereโs 2 smells in the automotive world that make me want to puke:
1) burnt transmission fluid (and I mean burnt to the point of failure)
2) flaming rubber bushings. It smells different (and way worse) than tire rubber from a burn-out.
Wouldnโt it be easier to come in just on top of the bushing with a saws all and cut the bolt and the the same on the bottom side and the whole price should come out ? Without having to screw around with all the other stuff
When your in the weeds with a project like that the last thing you want to regret is the $5 extra for a really good saw blade. My pop's always told me always buy the best tool you can afford, used to be Stanley – don't know what the best is now because all my Stanley tools i bought still work fine after 40 years.
I just bought a Toyota that came out of New York and had to do a clutch on it. Subframe looked about like that Subaru's. Needless to say I did not touch any bolt that I did not specifically have to to remove that transmission
Did the same job without a torch. I used a cutoff wheel instead of a reciprocating saw (I couldn't find mine). Super sketchy…I don't recommend it! I REALLY wish I had a torch!
I always use diamond blades for cutting those bolts. They're slower at first but they dont get dull so they end up taking less time altogether.
I had a bolt stuck and didnโt have fire man I beat the thing down to nothing and after 30 mins roughly it came out. What a pain
Can't be stuck if it's liquid.
You boys are amazing thats all I got to say, not to rag on rainmaker ray but them boys that don't deal with rust have no idea how to tangle with it. And your guys just gave it the two piece with a side of Slaw and the fight was over before she started. Great work !
I was waiting for the fire truck to run out of water (:
Defenitly samurai rubber. It fights till the end.๐
What's up with the sound on all your recent videos? I gotta crank it up to hear ya then the damn ads bout blow my speakers out ๐ซ
My comment is Eric O never disappoints us with these videos!
I cut 4" cast iron waste pipe with the sawz all . I bought the right blades . But that cast iron is hard metal .
Olโ Vic
Freakin team work, Love it!
Yeah baby! My kind of rust belt video!
Gotta give a thumbs up to Diablo saw blades. Work great!
Anyone that's used a torch around rubber bushings can smell this video.
Wait … we just cut the bolt inside the pocket on both sides pull the arm out and the rest falls out ?
That hole in the subframe though ๐ ๐๐๐
I can smell this video
Good ole Victor. A tool box in itself!
That subframe definitely needed repair/replacing.
Good show Mr. O!
outstanding again Mr. O
Cant be seized up if its liquid….
the fire extinguisher is NOT sponsored by Napper, nor is is an ABC.. its a WTF'er.
I'm a plumber and the Diablo carbide is my go to for cutting out cast iron, itll eat threw those bolts
Yes! Carnage!
They deff dont do this kind of work down in Florida.
The torch fix is the best fix next to the real fix.
Thank gosh I live in Florida …wish you did too could always use an person…
Good job
Amazing! I can do it Eric O. Don't have a good lift.
Easy peasy! ๐๐
Hita Eric
Project Farm ! He sure does a lot of testing methods.
Sad all of this heavy duty torch work has to happen on passenger cars. At least its done.
Kind of you to have remembered PF. good vid, thanks. Do the Subies rot so badly because they are the go to car in a household when the slop is in the road?
It's like watching a couple of surgeons hacking off a limb. However, unlike a surgeon, you're going to put it back together again.
Awesome you mentioned Project Farm, love that channel as well.
It shocks me how popular these Subaru s are
My Subaru was always a nightmare to work on. Had so many problems with it and nothing ever wanted to come apart.
hilarious!! you dang near licking thev flams and Josh got a spray water bottle gloved up in case the bottle heats up!! nice surgery
Ahh, the ole Victor master key, very useful tool indeed!
Couldn't replace bolt so we replaced the car. But seriously, when all else fails use thermite.
Hi Eric, The picture quality on this job was absolutely phenomenal. Did you change something to make it so crisp?
This is one of those videos you can smell. You never forget the smell of burnt rubber bushings. ๐
As a shade tree mechanic, I've worked on a few of my friends' Subies, and they all seem to have rust issues underneath with stuck nuts, bolts, etc. Seems to me they're a bit worse than most other vehicles, but maybe that was just my luck.
"You always thought that the pinch bolt that held the ball joint in was the worst on a subaru, well, it is…"
Team work!
Eric, youโre just fearless.
Free fireworks show before bed!!! Thanks Eric (and Josh).
Looks like that thing will need a subframe sooner or later
Eric, do you know why Autel stopped using intelligent diagnostics on the ultra?
Thought it would be easier to through the bolt & air chisel the remnants out ?
Weld all day on completed cars in a car factory. I use the same type fire extinguisher. Only let me down once in all the years.
Project farm is awesome for product reviews.
I'm sure this will go un-seen but bushing rubber will burn in oxy-acet cutting flames pretty well, you can burn out just the bushing in the event you need to save the arm or part you're working on. I've had to do this a couple times and it's really not that bad, the rubber burns away fairly cleanly with a lot of oxygen well a lot cleaner than it burns with a neutral flame. I like to come in with an oxidizing flame and get a hot spot then hit the O2 and just cut/burn the bushing like it was steel. I perfected my skill on this when I replaced bushings on a personal vehicle and needed to retain the parts since I was swapping to poly on the fun car. When you gotta do it yourself you learn how to do it better.
2010 Forster ball joint pinch bolt flashbacksโฆ.. the ciesing and rusting and anger. Aaah salt. How we all hate you.
Good stuff as always. Keep fighting that good rust belt fight
A little wd40 and some candle wax and that bolt would have fell out lol
Funny, I can literally smell the acrid odor of hot metal and burning rubber, amazing how just the sight of some things can trigger actual smells!! LOL !!
I use my plasma cuter
I really enjoy this videos, but all of Ericโs because heโs always walking us though the problems and how to actually do repairs when things arenโt working
Eric one, rust zero. Fine job guys!
" Fire in the hole!"
Nice work
Nice to see some of Josh… Have him say 'hey' next time.
Nice shout out to PF. Consumer Reports could take some lessons from him on testing. ๐๐๐ป
Straight up surgical procedure right there boys! Good shout out to Project Farm there at the end. Next to SMA he's one of my favorite channels ๐
Project Farm got a shout out from Eric O.
Yes sir need there do that !
It won't hold if it's liquid metal.
I love the smell of burnt bushing on a Monday morning
Love the work done by Project Farm!!
diablo blades are like a hot knife through butter.
I had a 03 Alero I had the same issue with only hand tools took me hours to get it out
used a big ass air impact on my 2010 3.6r r/f until it came off
I can smell that in Michigan
I love the smell of burning bushings in the morning!
That looked like a good time. We enjoyed your struggle.
Sorry about the noise in the back ground but we had the exhaust fan on because burning rubber stinks ๐๐ผ
